A Creature of Habit

That would be me...one could almost set one's clock by me. For example, though my children were born two and a half years apart, one was born at 4:27 pm and the other at 4:29 pm.

And take last Saturday...I was baking the annual apple pie. No, I took no notice of the day I made last year's apple pie. Would you like to guess how far apart the two events were? Same day. One year apart. Weird. I am.

Baking apple pies from scratch...homemade crust and all...is such a labor intensive affair that it can't be allowed to go unnoticed. Isn't it pretty? Much prettier than last year's photo, too, I think.

I also baked that apple cake that Chocolatechic was talking about last Saturday. Mine was just as pretty as hers except a little darker. Okay, a lot darker and that's why I didn't share a photo because, oh all right, I burned it. How you ask? I was blogging. That's right...blogging. A girl can't do it all all the time. Gheesshhh. Anyway, this is just to testify that, even though it was slightly burned, it was still moist with those cinnamony pockets of apple goodness...special. If you bake one, yours will be very pretty and tasty.

Late yesterday afternoon, I went over to John's house to see how things were going as he is preparing his home to rent. So much to do and the poor man needs my help. I saw it all so clearly. He's overwhelmed with it all. So I am going to be helping him a lot more...he may live to regret this...and that means that I won't be around Blogdom as often. I'll miss being able to check in on you whenever I feel like it. I know that this is not going to be just a week's nor even a month's job, but I hope to be figure out my new schedule soon. I think I might go nuts without you all.

Leaving you with a picture of my autumn leaves in the most lovely shades of silvery sage and salmon...

Enjoy a wonderful Tuesday!

  1. Oooh, love those leaves.

Good luck with getting John's house in order (geez, that sounds like such a "strong statement", eh? lol).

You'd better come visit me - you know I can't rant and rave on my own with no feedback. LOL

  2. That pie looks delicious! Have fun helping John. With the two of you working on it together things should get done much faster than you think. Pop in when you can.

  3. Beautiful pie, and I know my pies!! That is a pretty strange coincidence. How come you only bake apple pie once a year? I know the apples are plentiful in fall.

I'm going to try chocolatechic's apple cake too. I'll try not to forget it's in the oven but I can't promise anything.

  4. Does someone get apple pie for their birthday...or why is it baked on one special day? I like baking pies...rather, I love EATING pies...so they happen quite frequently around here.

We will miss you in blogland, Vee...but sometimes life gets in the way of blogging. (I'm due for a break soon as well.) Have fun working as a team...you will accomplish much.

  6. I'm smiling Vee, we will see how long you really can be away .. but hey .. .give it a whirl.
It's so great that you are going to help John get his house ready to rent. . .and just think of all the blog material you will be collecting along the way.
I have done the same way with baking and so on and it is quite shocking.

  7. I too am a creature of habit and at times I burn ... no I prefer to say "assure doneness" because of blogging. My blogging patterns too will change now that my husband has returned from Iraq. I admit that it is the hardest transition when he returns. The photo is beautiful!

  8. Those leaves are beautiful, I have never seen leaves turn those muted tones before.

Of course you will be at your grooms side as his help mate. While we will miss you I think it will be a short time because with two of you working together the job will get done twice as fast. Enjoy the process and your time together.

Blessings on the works of your hands, expanded time, energy, and ability to sort and organize as you make way for your new life together.

  12. Oh how I would love to be able to bake a pie. Alas, I tried once about 30 years ago and failed so miserably that I never attempted it again! : )
Thanks for the picture of the Fall colors! We Arizonans have to live vicariously through our East coast friends!

  13. Hi Vee
The more one bakes the faster it goes -- it's like learning to play a piano. If you bake pies often the crust making becomes quick and easy to do. I use to make a lot of pies but I avoid making them now because of being on a constant diet.....sigh. I wish I had my 30 year old metabolism back ..lol!

Getting a house ready to rent is so labor intensive that I'm sure John will appreciate your help. Go easy on him ;-)

    Hugs, Pat

  15. Vee, that pie is gorgeous. As for being too busy to blog as much as you'd like, you don't have to convince me... I completely understand. Life has gotten so busy these days for me too. I hope that it will be a temporary thing for us both. Sounds like hubby needs you and that is definitely top priority. So, off you go with our blessings. Check in when you can... since we're BFFs, I'll be here when you come back.

  20. I hope you get that house ready in a hurry, cause I'm going to check in here every day anyway...and I'll bet that cake was just pretending to be burned so no one would eat him...doncha think?

  21. My apples are waiting for me...in a cool spot, your pie looks amazing, wonderful, mmm. Would you believe people look at me with "deer in the headlights" as I tell them I only make homemade pie crust, we are a dying breed Vee.

Have a wonderful time helping John, he should come first and we will all be waiting for your return :).

  25. Your pie looks so yummy, I want a bite. It is so kind of you to help John with his house. I would like to ask where John is going to live if he rents his home?

  27. Hi Vee,
I just got caught up on the blog posts I had missed. As always, I love hearing your "deeper thoughts", and have enjoyed the political conversations you have offered. We just had our election and I am glad the decision was not fraught with as much stress as yours is shaping up to have. These are tumultuous times indeed...

Enjoy your time puttering with John - he seems like such a sweetie, and so sensitive and thoughtful to you. You deserve it, of course...

    Looking forward to your return!
    Linda

    Many sweet blessings!

  29. I finally found it!!!! I dug and dug and dug and was about to give up and have to ask you; "What did James Carville say, which you keep saying 'frosted' you?"

    But I found it! Yes????????
    --------------------

Two weeks ago, democratic pundit James Carville delivered a verdict on the 2008 presidential election.

He said that Senator McCain could ‘…call the dogs in, wet the fire and leave the house. The hunt’s over’.
    ----------------------

Yuck! How sweet?!? NOT! According to the "Ragin' Cajun," the American people shouldn't even bother voting.

I see why this 'frosted' you!
