Something Lovely

I need to think about something lovely today. Something right. Something pure. Something noble and admirable (a poor paraphrase of Philippians 4:8). This has nothing whatsoever to do with Friday the 13th, though if I were a superstitious person I'd think so.

Back along, I told you that I had had a sweet offer of perennials from my sister's garden. At that time, I couldn't fetch them, but while Nan was in the hospital last weekend, I did go dig up three boxes full. I have lots of lilies (already gone by), some bleeding hearts ( I hope one of them is white), and a number of tall phloxes. They haven't looked especially happy in their new environment hence the cropped photos. Anyone know how long it takes for them to perk up?

I may just quit and buy some mums for fall. I'm beginning to see them all over the place. The garden could so use some color!

Nan is safely in Rehab and is as content as one can be. We are so thankful for the Lord's working this all out. Thank you again for all your prayers and thoughts on our behalf. We felt them, believe me.

  1. I'm so glad to hear that your Nana is doing better. :) That is great news!

I've never transplanted flowers at this time of the year so I don't know how long they will take to perk up. It shouldn't be too long though...

I've seen the Mum's out as well! I'm SO excited because that means Fall is just around the corner! My favourite time of the year. :)

They'll be lovely next year, though.

  4. Hi Vee - SO glad to hear that Nan is in a good place and that you and John have your home to yourselves (nothing against Nan, but you both needed it). I hope she fares well and is happy there AND you can go visit anytime. That's wonderful news.

Now in my limited experience, it might take a little while for your flowers to perk up, but since they're perennials, if they don't act perky this year, maybe next year they will. Right now, they've got to establish their root systems again. Did you give them some fertilizer? Or some rooting mix? Might ask the nursery...

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. How great that Nan is in rehab and doing well! I don't know how long it takes for transplanted flowers to start looking perky again. We transplanted two arborvite this summer and they both died. We should have waited until fall...

  6. I never expect transplants to look good the first year...but you may have a "greener thumb" than I do...

So happy that your Nan is in rehab. Big sigh....

  7. Marge's phlox took about a week to revtve. They were half dead when she got them. But they are looking great now. And I too am so glad Nan is settled for now. What a relief. I am SO not ready for autumn.

  9. Hi Vee, I love that verse you paraphrased...I really try to live by it, but it sure is hard some days!

I'm glad you got the perennials, you will really enjoy them next year. They will perk up when it turns cooler, I'm thinking.

It's great news that your Nan is faring well in rehab. What a relief for you and your hubby!

Hope you find that something lovely today. And have a wonderful weekend!

  11. Didn't proof-read well enough, the first try at a Comment! So I try again...
    -------------------

I know nothing about The-Life-Of-Flowers or how to make it Happy. But you have Gardener-Readers, for that.

I'm sorry the transplanted flowers aren't as perky as you wish. But I LOVE cropped-to-just-a-few-blossom photos! Love them! Love them! Love them! How classy. How artistic. How super-dooper photos, they are here. -swooooon-

Glad the rehab is settled. But, someday rehab will "have to" decide they've done all they can for Nan, and send her 'away.'

    What then?

Maybe that question, has something to do with the opening words of this entry...

    Gentle hugs...

  13. On a lighter note...

"I need to think about something lovely today."

Lovely! It jogged my memory. To an old Audrey Hepburn film. "Funny Face" And the adorable song and dance number Audrey and her "boss" did to: "On How To Be Lovely"

    Anyone else remember that?

They picked up pink napkins [maybe?] and tied them under their chins, to make those wee little head scarves which we wore back then. :-))))

Nice memory. Thank you for jogging it. :-)

  16. So nice to hear that Nan is safely into rehab. I hope they take good care of her there.
It would have been a shame to miss out on the flower offer, so I'm glad you were able to get some while the gettin' is good.
I agree with the other comments that it may take awhile til they perk up. I would just keep them watered well in the heat. I'm sure next year they will be lovely.

  17. Some lovely thoughts for sure on this Friday the 13th. So glad your Nan is in rehab...and doing as well as could be expected.

Your phlox may not look their best this season...but you will enjoy them in years to come. I miss the tall phlox that I had on the farmyard.

  18. Glad that Nan is all settled in and doing well.

I just bought a bouquet last week and it had these lilies in it- wasn't sure what they were. Thanks for the clarification!

I could go for some mums too. I usually get some around my b-day next month!

    Have a great weekend!

  19. So glad to hear that Nan is settled for the time being. I hope that this will be a bit of respite for you and John, a time to breathe and gather yourselves together. That verse in Philippians is one of my favourites.

Transplants when flowering tend to not do so well. But they'll look beautiful next year!

  20. What I can see of the plants looks lovely! I'll bet they will look very healthy and beautiful next spring! They just need a little time to settle in!
I'm with you about those pit bulls fate! I love dogs, but I am terrified of dangerous animals! What are people thinking?!!!
So glad to hear that Nan is content where she is for now. Hope you get some much needed rest and relaxation!

  23. Hi Vee,
I think your flowers look great! I am looking forward to the weather cooling down so my plants perk up. I think the heat has gotten to them. I wilt too with the heat, I guess I'm just a delicate flower~ LOL.
At least thats what my kids say. I just don't do well in the heat.
I'm glad to read that Nan is doing well.
Have a sweet and restful weekend.
    Big hugs, Elizabeth
