Downton Abbey

Of course, you've all heard of Downton Abbey the *BBC production of which the first four episodes are available for a limited time only *here.* I have enjoyed the escape that watching an episode a day for four days has given me. Perhaps you will, too. Thank you, Aunt Amelia! (I learned about this program at Aunt Amelia's Attic on *this post.*) Season II will not be available until autumn of this year and then followed by a Christmas special. It's challenging to have to wait that long to find out what happens next. Filming hasn't yet begun so there are no spoilers anywhere to be found either. Looks as if I'll be practicing patience.

It's Not All About the House; It's All About the People

Enchanted Serenity Period Films is a lovely blog for learning more about any period piece. I see that Charley has a lot of information about The King's Speech as well as Downton Abbey. We went to see TKS over the weekend and enjoyed it very much in spite of the language.

Popping in the picture made the rest of my text go poof. I was chatting about the header and how I haven't had time to take photos. The flowers on my windowsill are remnants from the larger bouquets. I'm quite sure that I wished you a wonderful evening... If not, I do now!

Edited to Add: I stand corrected. Downton Abbey is not produced by the BBC; it's produced by Carnival Films, which is a part of the NBC corporation, for the ITV network. (Thanks, Linds!)

  1. Well here is one who has not heard of Downton Abbey prior to this moment...but it sounds worth checking out. We plan to go see The King's Speech later this week.

As for the header...I like it...especially the reminder to pray!

  2. I have not heard of this program but will have to check it out on your excellent recommendation. I want to see The Kings Speech but will wait until it comes out on video. I have a short attention span and can't sit still long enough in a movie theater, I get distracted and miss half the film. I love the "pray" message on yor window sill. I hope you have a sweet evening.

  3. Rats. I went to check out Downton Abbey and was told it wasn't available in my area. It's because I'm in Canada and the CRTC keeps a pretty tight hold on things - mostly for monetary gain. I'll see if our local library has it.

The King's Speech is one movie I'd like to see - but like Miss Sandy, I may wait until it's available on DVD.

  4. I've been watching Downton Abbey the last three weeks on PBS. It ended with a lot of question unanswered. I didn't know there was more to come. Thanks for the clarification. I rented The Kings Speech today and will watch it tomorrow.

  5. Downton Abbey looks like just my thing! I'll have to check it out while Audley is on the road traveling the next two months (because it is NOT his thing).

Your window sill is lovely, and I love the scrabble pieces. We all need a reminder. I hope you are well my friend.

  6. I LOVED Downton Abbey. I watched it on PBS. I have it all recorded onto my DVR so, providing one of my lovely children don't erase it, I can watch it again and again!

I just LOVE period pieces-my favorites hands down.
We went to see The Kings Speech last week and I thought it amazing as well.

  7. Thanks for the heads up. I had heard about this program and missed it and really had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it so I definitely will be watching it soon.

Your window sill vignette is sweet, love the Scrabble letters. Take care.

  8. I think I saw something about that on Aunt Amelia's blog. I'll have to check out that series. I've not had time for TV lately. I love things like that, but they're a little slow for my rootin-tootin, spy, sci-fi, murder mystery, war movie guy. Typical male I suppose...

  9. Oh, Vee, I didn't realize there would be more! I'm so glad to hear this! It certainly ended rather oddly but it makes more sense if there is more to come. I bought myself a set of the DVDs so far because I love this sort of drama and will lend it my daughters and friends. It is lovely to watch. The actor who did Mr. Bates played the father from the series Lark Rise to Candleford and if you have not seen that, do! I think you would enjoy it a lot.

  10. I've seen snippets of Downton Abbey here and there on PBS... I love period pieces - Lacey and I have been watching Jane Austen movies for the past year or so (Mr. Darcy is SO handsome!).
They are so well done and it's nice to have an escape from our daily routines now and again.
    Take care,
    Love,
    Liane

  11. I will check into this series. With the bad weather coming through this week I should get some extra time to just sit and enjoy them. Yay!

I want to see The King's Speech when it comes out on DVD. Too bad they had to include the language. Otherwise this movie would probably be great for use in the classroom.

  12. They had to use the language because the story could not be told otherwise. They did not use it just to "use it."

  13. Yes, that Dear sweet Auntie does give a lot of info doesn't she. Loved this series!

Love the simplistic look of your header.

    Stay warm and safe!

  15. I've watched all four episodes for the last four weeks on PBS and loved it. It will be hard to wait for the next season.
It is like Upstairs, Downstairs which I loved too.

  16. Downtown Abbey is new to me. Sounds like I've been missing out on something good so I thank you for making it so easy to check out.
First thing I noticed this morning was your header. Simply lovely!!

  17. Thanks for sharing your great find. I also love period pieces and have been watching BBC's Victorian Farm and now Edwardian Farm. Although, even though I'm busy all of the time, these video clips make me realize how very easy my life is.

  18. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh! -clapping of hands- A new blog look here! A sweet and warm new blog look!

Oh I am so happy! THIS, says much, to me. :-))))))))))))))))

And let me tell you that I was so glad to see you comment, a day or so ago, because... NATURALLY, I figured you had caught the "flu bug" which was going around in your family. And that you were down-for-the-count.

But no! You and John and your daughter were going out somewhere. I was so relieved.

*Naughty* Vee! *Naughty* *Naughty* *Naughty* You know I worry! You *know* you were *supposed* to let me know, daily, that you kept avoiding the "flu"! -ducking, running and hiding-

  23. Hello miss Vee....love the new header. You and my sister take such wonderful photos of your kitchen window sills.

My hubby loves the BBC, for me...not so much, but I hope you enjoy!!!

    Blessings!

  24. I was aware of it, but kept forgetting to watch the episodes, so thanks for the link and the review! We haven't seen TKS yet, but want to... so thanks for the warning on that, too!

  25. Hi dear Vee,

Just checking in on you and am so happy to get a tip about this series. I am bad about watching television, but this is something I would've loved. Now I can tap into it and enjoy it.

Sending love across the coooooold miles,

  26. I've have been wanting so much to see that series and every time it is on, I am out! Haven't had a chance to see if it is available "on demand" so your link is quite helpful.

This business of dribbling out a series episodes over time drives me crazy! Don't judge me...I got hooked on The Walking Dead, which only had like six epsiodes, then will resume NEXT FALL! For crying out loud people, what is up with that????

  27. Since doing a PS seems acceptable in your comments (grin) keep us updated about how the major winter storm is affecting your area.

Wouldn't it be interesting to have a Linky for everyone posting about the storms affects?

  28. Hi Vee,

Yes, it is wonderful. I love everything Jane Austen. The cast for this production is wonderful. I will check out enchanted serenity for sure. Happy snow Vee.

  29. Oh Vee, I love Downton Abbey, Irish tv is now showing the series and I have heard that the BBC will make another season too.
I hope you enjoyed your meeting with Brigid today, may her blessing extend to you and yours, across the pond, on this her feast day. Big hugs, Margie.

  30. Vee, my hubby and I just loved Downton Abby! We were both sad when the season ended. It is so well done. I love period films like that. My hubby wouldn't pick a movie like that but after the first one he was hooked! I hope you are well. I pray for you and your family daily. Thank you so much for visiting me. You are a very special bloggy friend of mine ♥

  31. I so enjoyed Downton Abbey and afterwards bought the DVD so that I can watch it all again later in the year.
Apparently 2 hours of film were taken out of the US showing.

  32. No, Barbara. We saw it in its entirety or so we are told, but the formatting was different. (Our shows were longer and without any advertising.)

  33. Vee, a first for me was to watch Downtown Abby on my computer. I really enjoy English films, so thank you very much for your recommendation. Be forewarned of homosexual kissing though.
