Filling in the Gaps

Remember to be gentle with yourself and others. We are all children of chance God and none can say why some fields will blossom while others lay brown beneath the August sun. ~Kent Nerburn

~welcome to August~

Often I do a Mosaic Dud on Monday afternoon or late morning as the case may be. Sometimes I'm so good lazy that I don't. =}

This week I have several.  The one above? Not good enough and done just this morning. The one below — rejected on the basis of being too much the same-old, same-old.

The day lilies are all but gone. I'm pleased that they made it all the way through July as that is not often the case. Since there was a large space without color, I purchased, at a deep discount, a wave petunia basket to hang there. It's not as lovely as the ditch lilies by a long shot, but pleasant all the same.

X marks the same tree

What do you add to your garden to fill the empty places?  You green thumbs gals must have some tips!

John and I both have big projects started today. He's working on the fence and I'm working on the Irish linen.

John on the line; Irish linen on the line

Guess that I have wandered around long enough... Wait! One more little project to show you that my daughter made.

she loves posing for me...see that cheeky little grin

So cute!

Stay cool now...

  1. Your pictures of your beautiful gardens are wonderful So love your model, also. That pink & white bg is cute & I love that bracelet.

What do I do to fill the empty space sin my garden??? Right now I need a bull dozer. This heat has taken a horrible toll on my 1,065 plants I put in this spring. all my impatiens are dead in 4 gardens ... that about 300+ I lost, maybe way more. Makes me sick.

    Have a beautiful week `

  2. Cute bracelet on tha clever girl!

My late summer garden fill in tip: plant nastursium seeds in early July. Their round leaf shape contrasts well with other greens, and they tend to start blooming about now. They come in lots of colors, including pinks and pale yellows so if you don't like orange, buy those. Also there is a variety with variagated leaves that look quite pretty even before they bloom.

I don't know when they grow in your area, but they have worked in late summer for me in several planting zones, the seeds are cheap so give it a try even now for late august through early fall color.
Marigolds and salvia plants can add a spark too...and they are about all the garden centers are carrying now for instant color.
Oh and my star gazer lilies are just now blooming..-remember to put a couple of those in under the annuals for color after the annuals are spent.

  4. Very cute bracelet! Sorry you'll get no tips from me because green is not the color of my thumb. I enjoyed the quote you shared...

  5. And you will do what, with the Irish linen, when it comes off the line? It must be beeeeeeeeeeutiful!

And how did your beautiful Daughter make that cool new bracelet idea?!?

I see something like this and my mind jumps to my poor "Grand E." with the broken ankle, and a lot of time on her hands. :-)

  6. Cute button bracelet! I have always wanted to have a garden that was blooming for 3 seasons. Hyacinths, daffodils and tulips in the spring, roses, lavender, lilies and daisies in the summer and mums in the fall. I just have never down that. Someday...

  8. Daughters are great at "cheeky little grins", aren't they! I love the bracelet. I'll bet my girl would love it, too! Yours is very clever!

Wish it was 90 here. We're expecting more 104's and 105's with heat indexes as high as 112 here in old EAST Texas today! Eeek! Not about to put out any more flowers to fill in! I've given up on trying to make my flowers look good this summer. The periwinkles are alive, but not really thriving. The grasshoppers are eating everything in sight including my roses. 33-34 days of 100+ temps and no relief in sight for at least 14 more days. August is the worst!!! How can it be worse than July???

  9. Oh I will take that 90 degrees...it would be wonderful...it will be near 108 today!! 90's sounds like spring.

Your daughter..that is great and love the bracelet, my 20 year old daughter would enjoy that also...mine is always posed for the camera..LOL

  11. Cute bracelet! Day lilies spent here also. I think the only thing left in bloom here is crepe myrtles and wax begonias. My pot of petunias should have been pitched long ago.
Heat index was 106 here, the last I heard, and the whole week is going to be like this. :(

  12. Love that photo of your daughter and her pretty bracelet.

I tucked some shasta daisies into some empty spots. Won't do anything for me this year but next Summer they should put on a show!

My computer tells me it is 92 degrees outside right now. I'll take its word for it.

  13. Well..Vee..we have watermelons the size of pumkpins, lol. No kidding :). I also have purple daylilies along the sidewalk of the front door entrance. Also, there is hycinth growing near the swing, azelas, and bunch more things that Mrs. Appling planted more than 40 years ago. I think she just threw them (the seeds)out and they just grew where they landed. Oh and I have 2 beautiful red Lincoln rose bushes in the back. Oh, and pear trees and crab apple trees.

    I love the bracelet. smiles

  18. Cute photos of your daughter and her bracelet!

I don't usually fill in, I even often leave the spent flowers, like coneflower, for the birds for awhile ..if you saw my front garden now at the beginning of August you would think it was a jungle! The coneflower have gone crazy! Big plants....

It was hot here today too, I need to mow but am only going out now around 6:30 this evening to do it...much cooler than earlier...

    Blessings!

  19. Retired Knitter~

I have Photoshop and for mosaics I use Photoscape (a free program). I save photos about in the mid-range for quality, which is a lot higher than some use because they don't know how to change it. I had a good buddy tell me how about a year ago. My camera is a middle of the road camera. I used to tweak colors, but don't bother anymore just using straight out of camera shots(SOOC). I like to crop, but prefer taking the shot in such a way that it is already framed. I take a lot of pictures and get lots more duds than good ones.

  25. I loved the shot of the irish linen on the line, That speaks of summer to me. My secret for a garden of flowers all summer long is impatiens. They seems to grow and flower all summer as long as I keep them watered. They do well in shade and as I've been planting them for years they even re-seed although they are annuals. I also plant a lot in flower pots so if soem die out because of an attack of snails, or what not, I can always add more later.

Your daughter looks so pretty in pink and white! She is also a vision of summer! My daughter began her new job in Colorado yesterday. She now a manager and has her own office. I'm hoping her co-workers will all be nice and thta she will be happy. So far they love it out there!

  26. You always have a project going on. Don't you every stop and give yourself a rest? Love your daughter's button bracelet! Temps here start dropping below 90 tomorrow (yippee!). We had 17 straight days of 90+degrees, enuf!

  27. Hopefully, the days of 90's are over! We seeing cooler temps on the horizon here, at least.

Very clever and cute bracelets your daughter made and I can't wait to see what you're doing with the Irish linen.
