A Haven for Vee

Bacon

So I had just nicely settled into my nest on the sofa where I was finishing up some crocheted items. I had been reading TipNut on Making Bacon in the Oven and so had two trays of bacon at 350° and a timer ticking away the 23 minutes or so. I recall now that I was feeling pretty good about my levels of multi-tasking—smug and self-righteous was I. Settling into the cushions, I said, "John, if you smell anything burning, tell me."

It was not five minutes later when he began to talk about burning bacon. Truly, I heard him, but I was busy counting stitches and, besides, I thought he was teasing me. Another five minutes and he mentioned it again with a most perplexed look. I had to laugh because his look was, well, so perplexed.

Another five minutes when he said, "Are flames going to have to shoot out of the oven for you to do something?!"

The nicely done tray on the right was put in the oven just ahead of the badly burned tray on the left. That's correct. Both trays baked in the very same oven on the very same shelf. Apparently 'tis the season for sensors to give up the ghost. First the camera and now the oven. Sigh. There go all my dreams of perfectly baked cookies and cakes and breads for Christmas. Wah. I feel like Mr. Parker wailing for his turkey in The Christmas Story. If only I had listened!

Any mishaps at your place lately?

  1. Yes, Vee! I am so sorry about your mishaps. Inconvenient timing for sure! Please read my blog!

  2. I told my story of woe with my oven on Thanksgiving! I feel your pain!

I certainly hope you can get it repaired...

  3. You know, despite the photographic evidence, I don't believe you can ruin bacon by cooking it toooo much. Just close your eyes, pop it in your mouth and think of it as on the crispy side. In fact, I once had chocolate covered bacon and it was yummy! Try some chocolate on it!!

  4. Oh no, very bad timing for this to happen. I do love crisp bacon, but I think that might even be a bit to crisp for me.
No mishaps here ... yet (she says with fingers crossed :).

  5. You had me chuckling on this one... I love how you took this 'mishap' and turned it into a wonderful posting for us to enjoy, with glimpses of perplexed faces and all!

So was the non-flamed pan worth it?

  6. I love bacon! As a matter of fact I am going to try to find the maple cured bacon for our Christmas morning. We usually eat the turkey bacon which is ok.....but not nearly as good!!!

    PS....glad nothing caught fire!

  7. Oh dear. No mishaps lately but there are 4 more days of baking and cooking so time will tell.

  8. I think you must be so much fun to live with - you can turn a "mishap" into laughter!

Probably my greatest mishap is indulging in the homemade toffee my neighbor brought. It was so good and my internal brakes didn't say "stop!".

I'm about to go down and bake some sourdough muffins so I may not have the same response about mishaps later today.

  9. Oh my! This can't be good. Do you remember the scene in Christmas Vacation where the turkey looks so perfect but when he cuts into it...smoke comes out and it shrivels up? We always think of that when something goes wrong! heehee! Enjoy your day....order take out! lol ♥

  10. O, Vee...right here at Christmas time, too. Sorry, dear one.
My oven did the very exact same thing a couple months ago. Just acted so weird...one side of my cake would be done and the other...NOT..I was just beside myself but Mr. Sweet got a new element and all is well now. Hope that's all that's wrong with yours.
(altho, daughter just got a new built-in double oven and an amazing new counter cook=top and you talk about nice...if we could only afford new ones, I'd blow my ol stove up and go for the new. :))
Hope you have a Merry Christmas anyway. :) (the stores have the BEST cookies, pies and cakes already cooked for ya)
Love and hugs to you, bj

  11. You already know all about my goofed up gifts! I hope nothing else goes awry neither here nor there!

    Have a great day!

  12. Oh, and I forgot to buy tape! Who does not remember tape for wrapping gifts?

  13. Last month I had to get a new stove myself. We were planning on repairing it, but the wiring was burnt through. I'm enjoying my new stove though! How about making candy (peanut butter balls, etc.)? That doesn't use anything but the microwave for melting chocolate.

  14. Ohhhhhhhhhhh chuckles... Isn't that THE way? *Murphy's Law* "If something can go wrong, it will." And I add, and it will at the worst possible of times. -gigggggles-

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm... First your camera kicked-the-bucket. Second, your oven sensor kicked-the-bucket.

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Oh ya' know what they say, about "Things Coming In Three's".

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh. You say you really did NOT need to be reminded of that old saying??? -giggles-

  15. Thank you for your sweet comment in my blog today. Yes! I do feel that something has changed. People are sick-and-tired of Politically Correct-ness. And they are more accepting of differences.

Funny thing is --- Do those 2 things "go together"? Or are they opposites?

  16. Uggh...the smell of burnt bacon is awful. But, I am glad you got one good tray out of the deal.

  17. Oh dear. Not good. Not now.

No mishaps around here yet, but in between Christmas prep I'm packing boxes and they are starting to pile up. I'm sure to pack something I'll need for Christmas dinner.

  18. Oh dear! I still don't understand how that could happen. One side died...and the other cooked overtime? What happened to the super-crisp bacon? Maybe a dogs breakfast?

My flop of the last few days was the hazelnut log roll...from the MGCC cookbook. I mistakenly rolled it up the wrong direction...and then corrected and rolled it up the right way. But it cracked all over...and so it became a hazelnut trifle. A new recipe was born!

  19. Oh I've done that but the one I usually burn is the almonds that need a light toasting and end up being little black chips!

  20. Vee, it looks like you are in very great company according to the other commenters, or should that read that we are in pretty great company. ~smile~ Isn't it nice to know that when a boat is sinking we aren't alone.
You always amaze me with how well you take mishaps in stride. You might as well know this, you have become a great mentor to me.
Again I am wishing a very Merry Christmas, and probably will until then.
    Love,
    Sue

  21. Are John's arms broken or something?
    Men! (just kidding John-sort of)

My son makes bacon this way. Sometimes he sprinkles brown sugar on it-it's soooo good!
He watches it very closely as he had a bad experience once as well. I think that he turns the bacon a few times.

You're SUCH a good blogger! Taking pictures of the burned bacon. :P

  22. Oh Vee! I am so sorry. And at Christmas time too.

I was making something a week or so ago, can't remember what it was (probably blocked it out) and I had to saute peppers and onions. I was watching them, watching them, watching them and then I turned away for a second to answer my husbands question. Turned back and they were burnt black!

Hugs and Merry Christmas wishes to you!

  23. You know everyone comes to a post titled Bacon :)

That is so strange about your oven! I've never seen anything like that before. My condolences for not being able to bake any holiday treats but just think of all the pounds you'll save!

  24. I don't have an oven story for today, but i did wash a load of dark clothes with a tissue in it!!!

  25. Oh no! I had trouble with my oven sensor and replaced it a few years ago but then finally replaced the entire stove when it kept heating unevenly. The old stove was over 25 years old so I guess I got my $ worth out of it, but they certainly don't make new things the way they did. I hate to give up my old "workhorses." I'm still missing my old refrigerator that had so much more room than my new one, even though they are the same outside dimensions.

My only recent disaster is that I'm battling a bad cold and feel lousy. I hope to revive in time for the big day!

  26. Oh Vee, that's really weird. I can't believe those were cooked at the same time! I hope you can get it fixed so you can get your baking done. Merry Christmas! I'm off early in the morning and won't be around. Hugs, Pamela

  27. Oh, bother! Why does everything break down at once? (btw, I cook bacon in the oven quite often.) Wishing you and John and all of the family a Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Now, I have cooked bacon in the oven a lot..but net the "well done" variety..LOL

Anyway, now I'm just eating "faken bacon" anyway..

Yep, our washing mackine is screaming..Mr B says it's a belt. Gues it's belt is getting as tight as mine this season..

    Merry Merry Christmas my friend..
Give John a warm Utah hug for me OK?

  29. Wow Vee, that is just the craziest thing! Now I see what you mean when you said your oven was done for.
My only mishap was my orange/cranberry muffins didn't turn out well. Minor compared to yours.
I hope tomorrow brings a better day for you.
    Blessing-Kimberly

  30. Oh yes I burnt a batch of sugar cookies...well one less batch to frost right? So sorry about the bacon though. I love doing mine in the oven, less mess on the stove.

  31. Oh my - that does seem so odd?! I do bacon in the oven and love the ease of clean up! Sorry that you've been having a run of bad luck.

    Wishing you glad Christmas Blessings!

    no.
    !!!!!

i bake my bacon - no nice to not have the splattered grease on the stove.

it seems that things go bad at the most inopportune of times.
