A Haven for Vee

Joel 2:25

This is not a tutorial. I am showing my process minus detailed explanations. Google, if you need details, and you'll find many tutorials that do a fine job.

So I had an idea. It was a gathering of ideas from many different places including *this post* at Sweet Nothings. It was a swirling of thoughts over the past months about how to find more presence in my displays in the home, how to incorporate meaning into those displays, and how to work with what I already have.

So I had this old frame purchased at The Christmas Tree Shop in 2008. ☺ It had a garish print perfectly matching what was going on at our place. After a very short while, I grew weary of it and tossed it into a hallway corner where it's been  gathering dust for the past two years.

When I took the frame apart, I found a nice sturdy backing hard as a board. Excellent.

Going directly to the computer, I found a font I liked and a size that would work and printed off Joel 2:25. The photo above shows testing the font behind the old print. The computer screen lit it up nicely. I was looking for a font that could be traced and filled in.

Found my burlap, cut the correct size, ironed it well, placed the font beneath the burlap and centered it more or less...I had extra. Then I carefully traced the outline using a black Sharpie.

Then all I had to do was fill it in. This is for John. It's his favorite verse. He considers it his promise from the Lord. Some might consider it his "life verse." Does he like this project? The jury's still out on that...

I wrapped the burlap around the sturdy whatever.it.was. and taped the edges on the back down. That's the really ugly part. I'm not sure how such things are professionally done.

So to sum it all up:

Meaningful √
More Presence √
Used What I had √

Now I'm waiting for some light so that I can show you where it is. (I'll pop another photo in soon. Done!)

~on the beam~

What has been your latest project? I'd love to hear about it!

  1. -giggles- YOu are so cute! This is the 2nd day, that you have advised me to NOT visit your blog entry. ,-) For fear it would *upset* me.

    -chuckle-

I said, I accept all the innocent fun, which people have, via photoshopping. I'm just talking about ..... history and things which should be seen "as-is."

But oh yes, you told me of a lady who feels like I do! I will visit her! So few do. :-)

  2. Well, well....look whose getting all crafty and creative on us. I like what you did with this project. I actually also like it as it looked on your computer screen, transparent and in front of the old picture. But, the burlap is great too! Gotta love our burlap! Well done!

  3. So you have gone and created something with "presence"! (And with meaning...and it was a bargain...all good!) I am certain that John will grow to love it. I can't wait to see where you've hung it!

Alas, all of my projects of late are still in the thinking stage.

  4. That is a beautiful idea Vee. I would do this one. I love the simplicity of it but the simple Book, chapter and verse... one of God's promises is beautiful.

  7. Vee,

This is a fantastic project and so sweet and thoughtful of you to make a gift to your beloved. I think you get an "A++" for the cleverness of this!

    Have a great weekend!

  8. I tried to comment from another computer, but it said my IP address was wrong.

Okay, how many of us had to go look up Joel 2:25? I did! You are definitely giving presence, Vee.

I've always admired your displays. I'll bet it was great fun having you for an art teacher. It's apparent that you love textures, color, and shapes. You are still teaching ~ just a different set of students. I made magnets and my guess is that I'm not the only one. Now I'm thinking of what you've done with that one verse...the simplicity of a single message can make many search for the meaning. Thank you!

  11. That's very cool. This would make great pillows too. Maybe a little scratchy for a pillow, but something similar to burlap would work.

  12. I don't know if I will ever get out of the "I need to declutter I need to clean" stage to think about having displays with presence. I think your verse looks great. My latest project was making a skirt for my daughter.

  13. Well done! I like it...now I'm off to look up the verse.

  14. Well I too have framed prints gathering dust in the corner of our garage. This project could fix that situation nicely.

I've wanted to stencil scriptures above the doirways in our house. So many ideas, so little "get 'er done!" mono available at the moment.

Am finishing up a small facinator though.

  16. Beautiful project Vee! You did a wonderful job and I like the inspiration of the verse on burlap. It looks great up there! I have the tools to do a project but am searcing for something to add to it. I'm too picky.

  17. A very special project, indeed.
And I thought I was the only one who keeps unwanted art for the frames....mine are in the corner of my bedroom and in the laundry room.

Don't let him fool you....he really loves it. Especially the thought behind it. Warren despises hanging things so he'll never admit liking things for the walls on the off chance I'll ask him to put it up for me. lol

Thanks for sharing....I am going to be working on my hall bathroom in the next few weeks!

  21. Spring seems to be inspiring all kinds of great ideas - I love this one. I hope that John will grow to love it.

Now I'm off to look up the verse - I think I know what it says, but I'm not sure.

  22. That's a neat idea, and it looks great up on the beam. I'm sure John loves it too!

This was the very thing I said to one of my sons last weekend and a verse I myself have had to believe on at difficult times in my life. I honestly tear up thinking of the times the Lord truly has 'restored' to me what Satan has stolen. He is so.....good.
And you're blessed to have a husband who 'hides God's word in his heart' and believes his promises. It's sweet of you to make this for him too!
    Have a good weekend-Kimberly

  30. I like the look of this very much.I had to go look it up. Then think lots about which verses I would choose for myself. Could only narrow it down to two.
