To Scallop or Not to Scallop

Ahhh, that is the question!

Turns out we have extra scallop that we could place above the transoms to mimic the front of the house. I think it could be too busy with the transom windows; John thinks it would be great to use the scallop since we learned that we are not allowed to return it.

A little reminder of what will be going on one day soon...

The windows upstairs will be replaced with this one and the doors are going to be trimmed out somehow. John is saying that he is cutting the doors square. I don't know. He's doing something to bring it more in line. As you may remember, we have this wonky asymmetrical garage front because of property constraints and the need for stairs to the side entry. (Before, the stairs came out into the driveway. Since there was a different garage then, it didn't matter. [A single garage door was to the left.] )

So, if you have an opinion this fine Saturday, please share. No, it will not cause an argument. I promise!

Have a lovely weekend...

Edited to Add: For further clarification, the scallop is a similar color to the siding, but not the same color. It is almond and the siding is pale green sage. We won't be painting. That's the whole point behind siding. =D

Edited to Add Again: Oh my! My communication skills are slipping. The garage will have the same siding as the house. It will be light sage green. See yesterday's post about one garage side already having been done.  So the brown is going away as the light sage green siding will go over the top. The scallop trim is a complementary color (almond—also the same color as the scallop on the house), while the siding color is as you see on the house. Same color, same batch, same everything. That siding has been waiting in the garage for a year and it's going on over the next two weeks. Just in case that makes a difference for anyone trying to decide.

Thanks for your input. This has been fun!

  1. I say bring on the scalloping - then go to Red Lobster for scallops!

    Big hugs.

  2. You know me, more is never too much when it comes to detail. I personally vote for the scallops, I think they will add visual interest and charming detail as well as tie into the house nicely. It will look great either way you go.

  3. Scallop here and over your garage doors :)

  4. I think the scallops would look nice above the transoms and would give uniformity with both building fronts.
I say we all go to Red Lobster to discuss this further!

  5. As much as I love the scallop on your house, my vote is to leave it off the garage, so as not to compete with those dreamy transom windows. (I ♥ transom windows!)

John's reason to scallop makes me smile, as it reminds me of someone I live with.

Either way, though, it's going to look great!

  6. I love the scallops on the house, but I think it might be too much on the garage. I like the transom windows there. But I am finding it too difficult to come to a real decision here! Have a nice weekend, pondering this question!

  7. Now I'm heading out to have another look at my garage as I don't think our (double) door is centered either. I assumed it was to allow for tool storage on the indside, which we use it for. I would not have noticed on yours if you hadn't said something, assuming the same reason.

So as far as the scallops, I'm wondering if they would look ok if they were stained the same color as the garage. Oops, just read yesterday's post. Maybe the garage is being painted. then I would say yes go ahead with the scallops --unles you want to sell them on craigs list or something like that.

I am so decisive! :-) Pathetic.

  8. Mmmm...my first thought is that I think the scallops would be a nice detail and tie the house and garage together. But I guess it really depends on how the doors are going to be trimmed out. I would wait to see how the garage looks with all your planned changes before adding that one more detail.

    P.S. - I was thinking yellow shutters too :)

  9. Perhaps you can use it, but not paint it white... Stain it to match the garage... Thereby cutting down on the possible "too busy look" factor.

The house scallop is the same color, as the house... It is not painted, like the white trim color.

  10. I'm the since we've got it and are stuck with it let's use it kind of gal. Since it's on the house already and you see the garage behind it with the same shape as that side of the house it would tie in the two nicely...

  11. Nix the scallops on the garage, have him build a potting shed & use the trim on that!! LOL!! I'm a " keep it simple" kinda girl!!! Besides, I think it takes away from your home.

  12. So many opinions! What to do?
My first thought is to use the scallops. I love them anywhere.
They add such charm, I think.
However, I would want to see how the garage doors are trimmed out before I made a final decision too.
So, in conclusion, I haven't helped you at all with your decision!

  13. Well, now I'm probably as confused about this decision as you are after reading all the comments. I love the scallops but wonder if they will stand out too much as they will be a different colour from the new siding going on the garage. I do think the angled corners on the garage doors should be removed as they take away from the transoms horizontal look. I like the suggestion of building a garden shed and using the scallops on it. :) Oh dear. Another kettle of fish, or scallops! Keep us updated on 'your' decision! :)

  14. I think I'd save the scallops for your next project (is there one?) and leave them off the garage just to keep simple lines. I like the squared off look on the garage...and the 'wonky' front really is hardly noticeable.

  15. I like the scallops on the house and think they would be great on the garage too.
I like the one window in the garage better than the two.
You have a lovely weekend too. : )

  16. I would use it! I think it would look great! Enjoy your weekend! It's a working one for us, too!

  17. Boy this is a tough one as I honestly think either way would look good. HOWEVER since this is just what MY opinion (or vote) would be I'd leave them off so as to keep the lines simple and not take away from the window. Looking forward to what you decide!

  18. I love those transom windows. You have lots of advice here and I'm not going to offer any more because I can see positives to both sides. So I'll just wait until you show us what you ended up doing.

All the Red Lobster talk has me on a rant. We get the RL ads on several national stations, but there is no RL west of Winnipeg. Either build a RL in western Canada or quit tantalizing us here.

  19. Vee if you add the scallop and line it up evenly over the doors it is going to emphasize the fact that the doors are aligned on the structure. Valerie

  20. I'm going to fall on the side of scalloping. I like the idea of bringing that detail from the house to the garage as well.

If we are all headed for Red Lobster do finish the discussion I'll have chicken. No scallops or lobster for me....

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oops! That was "to finish the discussion".

  22. I say no. The garage siding is completely different from the house. It will take away from the transom feature.
If anything a small piece above the window and below the vent. Paint it the same color as the garage or the trim. Or scallop that whole peak above the window.
Good Luck, have a great weekend.

  23. My first thought was to go with the scallop to provide continuity with the house. On second thought, since you're not painting, I'd leave it as is because you're right. It would be too busy and compete with the transoms.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think not...love the transoms on the house but on garage...too busy :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Go for it!!! :P
I mean.. where else would you use it up? :)

  26. I'm voting for the scallop trim 100%. Bring it on!

  27. I say incorporate the scallops! I love gingerbread type trim on a cottage style house and the scallops are perfect even if they will be a different color than the siding. There are many Victorian cottgae home sin Denver, CO that have scallop trim in front in lines of different colors, and they all look so charming. If you search on my blog for the subject "Denver Cottages and Homes" on my blog you can see a post I wrote about them.

  28. I'm with John on this one, Vee! Definitely do the scallops! I don't think it will be too busy at all! It will be charming just like the front of the house!

    Hugs!

    Have a great day, Vee.

  31. For whatever it's worth.... I love the scallops and I also vote for going to Red Lobster..... I'm hungry for those delicious biscuits.

On your previous post......the apples are so beautiful!!! We never see any like that in our Texas grocery store....

  32. I am new to your blog. Those transom windows are too beautiful to take away from. I wouldn't use the scallops unless they were the same color as the garage. Either way, I'm sure it'll be pretty.

  34. Ha ha-- hey I thought the scalloping is the same color as your house siding, but apparently not. I think it will look nice on the garage. And came back to say I like your new header and "fallish" look to your blog and quite a good job there of putting that new window up on your garage before it's really up!

I think you would enjoy A.C.s books --like little readings, not a novel. Just nuggets to chew on. :-)

  35. I say YES!!! I love the interest it gives and it would look so beautiful with the house as well...just my 2 cents sweet friend ~ btw, have you seen those mini pergola type things folks build over their garage doors to grow a gorgeous vine on? This would be beautiful too! Sorry, John...that would be more work, wouldn't it? hugs and love, Dawn

  36. Came back to see what all your readers are saying about the scallops...and now I want to go to Red Lobster too!
And I do love your new blog look. So autumnal! :)

  37. First and most importantly: I'm in for the Red Lobster.

Second: staying in the seafood vein, I say SCALLOP! ha!

  38. Rather than being too much, I think it will make it all come together. I always have to look things over and ponder for days before I know what I want. You'll have a feeling about what you want and that's what counts.
