Jakeisms

Well I am off to a great start...the blog is decorated...sorta kinda. Now if I can get the tree up today or even the leaves and pumpkins down, I'll feel as if I've accomplished something.

Jake arrived to spend some time with me last Wednesday while his big brother was off to have his stitches removed. Jake's the little guy in my header with the afghan backdrop.  He announced, as he was taking off his coat and hanging it up, that his mother's grandmother had passed away. Hmmm, I thought to myself, I do believe that happened some time past, as in years and years ago. I told him that I was sorry to hear this news and asked if he knew his great-grandmother's name. He thought for a moment and said, "Her name was Bar*ck Ob*ma." Ha! What a hoot that child is. I later learned that her name was Barbara. Yes, I can see how he got a little confused...lots of "B"s and "a"s and plenty of syllables.

Later, while on the sofa, he had his pudgy little fingers poked through the holes in the afghan. I mentioned something about this activity and he looked me right in the eye and said rather accusingly, "This is a fake blanket." Yes, Jake, I have thought so a few times myself when wishing for a sofa nap and a warm blanket and while feeling a draft.

During snack time, he refused to drink the apple juice I'd purchased for him in the individual box containers. He wasn't raising a fuss; he just wasn't enjoying it as
he usually would. After a bit, I asked him why he didn't drink it. No response. Finally, I asked "What's wrong with it?"

"It tastes awful." Ahhh, so now I knew.

His mother speculates that he can taste the carton and I'd not be surprised.

I had switched to the individual cartons because a few weeks ago I had served Jake some fermented white grape juice. (Sam prefers milk.) Jake chugged two juice glasses full without saying a word. It seemed as if the bottle had only recently been opened, but no, it had gone too long. Acccckkkk! Well, Jake did have a perfectly delightful and somewhat subdued afternoon and has not, as far as I know, had any lingering affects other than thinking, you know, that his great-grandmother is Bar*ck Ob*ma.

Have you ever done anything this terrible to your grands?

  2. He is a bit of a character but I agree with him I don't like any sort of grape juice or wine.

  3. Yes, it IS decorated here! Hooray! At least we can do this, and look all set for Christmas, hu? And never mind that our Thanksgiving items are still hanging about. Sushhhhhhhh... If we don't tell, no one will know. -chuckle-

As to your question, about *doing* to 'Grands,' well I started Kate out early. At her christening party, I dipped my little finger in my Champagne and let her suck it. :-))))

    Gentle hugs,

  4. Good Morning Vee,
Some very precious memories being made, I find myself, especially at this time of year, drawing on past memories! So many times I have seen my grandchildren playing with the holes in my afghans.

Love your header, I will be working on my blog this weekend. Thanks for the memories
    Enjoy your day.
    Hugs,
    Sue

  7. Kids say it like it is, don't they? With 6 grands, we've had our adventures over the years but I can't think of anything to relate to at the moment.

  8. Your blog looks so festive and your grandson sounds so adorable. I'm wishing for some grands soon, before I'm too old to get around.

  9. Oh my! You know what I always say...if that's the worse thing I ever do! lol Enjoy your day! I'm decorating and having a fun day! If only I had some of those little boxes of juice to give me energy and keep me going! haha!

  11. The fact that it shows up as a FAQ on the Welch's site leads me to believe you're not the first to serve fermented grape juice :). Ha. I'm wondering if maybe I have done it unknowingly as white grape juice is my absolute favorite. I'll be paying more attention from now on.
Your blog looks very nice for the Christmas season. The Christmas decorating began yesterday at my house. This morning as I gaze at the pile of boxes still waiting to be unloaded, I am thankful for a long weekend and comforted to know so many others are feeling the same way.

  12. Really enjoyed your grand stories this morning! Isn't funny, also, how we decorate our blog for the seasons etc? Just like our house. Yours is very pretty. Fake blanket. Love it! "Out of the mouth of babes ..."

  14. Too funny. We have some fake blankets around here, too. No grands yet but I did do lots of things that could have damaged my younger siblings...

  15. This past summer, when Ari and Maddie were here, we took a trip to Olympia for the BIG Farmer's Market. When we were leaving, I went to open the back door to the car to get the kids in and Ari had stuck his hand in the slit between the door and I caught his little fingers. I felt like the worse grammy in the world, but he came up to me later and said, "Don't worry Mimi, accidents happen." Something I had said to him and Maddie when they have mishaps. I cried and laughed all at once. I love my grandkids:-D

  16. I love spending time with my grands and the comments they make. Love the comments Jake made, especially about the fake blanket. Thanks for sharing, you've made me smile. My 2 yr old grandson refers to "yesterday" as "lasterday". How can that be corrected, just too cute. ~ Abby

  17. hahahaha oh my goodness how hilarious

WELL I don't have grands and can't think of anything that ever happened with my children...but I am reminded of a story of when my little sister babysat - she was probably in junior high or early high school at latest - and the parents came home to find (after my sister put the children to bed) my little baby sister out hold on the sofa - drunk as a skunk.

APPARENLY the juice the had in the pitcher that looked like Kool-Aid WASN'T! It was something adult spiked from a party the evening before.

Needless to say it was not a good thing, but so innocently done.

I think, now as an adult, I feel worse for the parents then my sister, but back then I remember her not feeling well the day after, I was old enough to know.

Love the fake blanket comment, so true, they're just that, aren't they?

He is brilliant in many ways, bless his little heart.

    Big hugs, Vee.

PS - So you didn't do a card party this month or did I just miss it?

  18. Thank you for sharing the "Jakeisms". I adore the things that children say. Our oldest granddaughter is grown and in college, but we still talk about the cute things she said (the other grands, too!).

  19. Oh my word, this post is a hoot. I just love that little guy and I don't even know him. So glad he was none the worse for the tipsy juice.

  20. Jake sounds like such a neat kid!!! : )

No, not to a grandkid but when my son David was little, I told him to drink his OJ up when we didn't want to and then I took a taste and realized it had gone bad.

    Pretty blog look.

  21. Hi Vee,
    Jake is a real cutie!!
I don't recall doing anything to the grand kids ....but...I remember when my son was about 8 yrs old, I made coconut ice for his birthday and coloured it blue and white............blue for boys, right!!. No one ate it........all said it had 'gone off' and was 'yukky'.....I stuck to traditional pink and white after that.
    Have a good day

  22. Your little Jake is a cutie. Kids say the darndest things don't they? I know our oldest grandson has said some funnies too but I am too tired to think of them tonight. They are pretty special aren't they?

  23. What a delightful grandson!!! Kids do say the cutest things. We have what we call 'Levi-isms' - much like your Jakeisms!

Your blog looks beautiful. I wish I knew how to do my own.....but I just ask Amber. I pick put the headers and backgrounds and she does the rest. Takes her FIVE MINUTES!!!!
I'm going to grow up and do my own.....someday soon.

  24. Jake is such a wonderful little boy and certainly knows his own mind and isn't afraid to speak up....I love all the funny things my grandkids say and just hope that Stephen will begin talking a little more very soon!

  26. What a cutie - he and Kyle would have quite the time together, along with Sam of course!

Fake blanket! Don't you just LOVE how their minds work?! Genius!

I haven't given Kamryn any fermented juice, but she did fall off the table while I was sitting right by her! Sigh...thankfully she was just fine!

  27. Funny, I feel like doing Christmas decking early this year.
And making note of apple juicing grands.

  28. I love it! You have me laughing. I recall how I was fearful of eating at my grandmother's place near the end...as we were sometimes served things that were well beyond their expiry date. Now I'm the grandmother...so I need to be reminded to check 'expiry dates'. :)

  29. I love the Jake-isms. I haven't fed my granddaughters anything iffy yet, but I'm sure it will happen. We did have one experience that I may share on my blog, but we'll see. I'm still quite horrified.

  30. So funny! I especially love the fake blanket comment. No grandchildren yet, but last Thanksgiving I was trying out my new convection oven with the turkey. It was so delicious, we were all just eating along. But when we turned the turkey over to get the meat off the bottom, the bottom half was not cooked! Back in the oven it went -- I have not used the convection part since. Obviously I don't know how it works. Thankfully, no one got sick.
