ChalkBoard Art and Catherine Holman Art-Framed

Oh let me see what I have in my bag of goodies. I take pictures all through the week and then, sometimes when I need inspiration, I merely have to look at my picture files and up pops a topic. Is that sometimes how it works for you, too?

~from Aunt Ruthie's Blog~

I love chalkboard art. One sees it everywhere. I have two small chalkboards to work with, though one needs not be limited to only traditional chalkboards. I also prefer a clean, scrupulously clean, chalkboard. Just my thing...all those years of teaching and chalk dust don'tcha know. One of the masters of chalkboard art is Ruthie at Sugar Pie Farmhouse. Just visiting *this post* will provide plenty of ideas. She even uses a twin bed headboard as a chalkboard — look for it!

Now I have tried to copy Ruthie and do the boards freestyle. It doesn't work, which was why I was so excited when first *Manuela* and then *Brenda* discussed Chalkboard Art providing the links to some amazing printables. (Plus you can see what each of them did.)

This is what I did...

I think we were all drawn to the same design, though there are a good number and they're all great. They are all so great that I did another last evening for John's side of the bed. Nothing like giving his great-grandparents a little break for a few weeks. ☺

Last week, my daughter was having six of her paintings framed so I went along with her to help in the frame selection taking along my Catherine Holman print. (Speaking of chalkboards, check out Cathie's Chalkboard Art in her kitchen.)

True confessions: I did terRiBle things to my print when I attempted to crop it on my own. Sigh. Catherine had signed the piece and I definitely wanted that to stay. The framer was very nice and helped tremendously in my selection and then she sold me on museum glass. Oh my! Very expensive and so worth it. I haven't had anything professionally framed for thirty plus years so I felt somewhat vindicated in my decision to just go for it.

Here it is double matted and framed with careful attention to detail. See how they preserved Cathie's signature? Phew!

~Peace be to this house~

This is not its final home. I am sitting with it for now and thinking about it often. In that way, I am hoping that it will "tell" me where it most wants to live. Yes, you will definitely see it again once it comes in for a more permanent landing.

Any splurges at your house lately?

  1. Very nice post! I saw those printables the other day...should I try them too? I'm afraid I am not a good chalkboard artist. But, I have a great chalkboard to practice on. I am so glad you went for it and had your Catherine Holman painting framed just right. Love her art!

  2. Oh what beautiful photos, Vee! Lovely and warm and Seasonal and etc. :-)

Ya' know, my first thought, concerning using templates to do chalk writing was...... "Awwww come on, make it your own and real." But then, I looked at more of your chalk board work, and it is nice. It is nice.

-chuckle- Guess I am torn, on not using one's own chalk writing... And using a template... Just like I am torn on the topic of PhotoShopping. :-) Isn't that quaint and cute of me? lol

  4. Is that your writing/printing on the chalkboards? I'm impressed. Maybe I could hire you. I painted chalkboard paint on a plate one time (the inner part, leaving the outside as framing the chalkboard part. Can write notes in the kitchen on it, when I have it out. And your daughter is very talented.

    1. NO. ☺ It is NOT my writing. Check links. Nothing here is my daughter's either. You must be flying today, Dotsie!

  5. I LOVE what you did with the printout!

I have a blackboard similar to that one that I plan to paint the wood a deep red (like Manuela's frame).

Oh, yes! Professional framing is well worth it for a real painting or print.

  6. Love the Chalk board! I want to do that but have not gotten around to it!!! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  7. Good morning! I love the whole idea and look of the chalkboard, but for some reason I have never done it...however, my daughter, the teacher has two! haha Must be the teacher in you. Enjoyed this as always...have a good day!

  8. Great artsy things going on at The Haven! I love the look of chalkboard art...and how nice that it can be printed. No spending hours getting the lettering just right, no accidental smudges after you've spent all that time getting it right. (Well, maybe not hours, although I suspect that I would spend quite a while...)

Cathie does such beautiful art. After your giveaway featuring her prints, I visited her shop for someone on my Christmas list. (Don't tell!) :)

  9. I love the chalkboard art also and have been trying to find an old frame in which to put a chalkboard...it is fun and pretty. One was made for my daughter's wedding shower. Thanks for the info...maybe I can get to that soon.
Your art is beautiful....it looks great! What talent she has

  10. Thank you for the lovely links! I love the latest addition you made to your decorations. Did you pick out the non reflective type of glass? Acrylic or real glass? UV coating? Nosey folks like me want to know, LOL. "Museum glass" is one of those terms that picture framing places like to use, but is not always consistently defined.

    1. Hmmm...it was the very best that they had to offer and there are no reflections and there was something mentioned about UV protection.

  12. Love this idea for the chalkboard art. I MUST try this. One question, does it use a great deal of ink from the printer?
I'm glad you splurged on the framing for Catherine's beautiful artwork. It should remain in good condition for many years. I have a few prints that have faded a lot despite being in indirect lighting.

    1. I don't believe so. Just make sure that you have your settings correct the first time. I forgot to click the box that says "fit to page" and so had to do another.

  13. I love chalkboard art. Our daughter painted a wall, by her kitchen door, with chalkboard paint and whenever I was there, Ari and I had a grand time decorating it for whatever season or event we wanted. I'm thinking after the new year of replacing the bi-fold doors on my pantry with solid doors that have chalkboard panels.
The framed piece is lovely and I know how special it must be from your daughter. I can't wait to see where it tells you it wants to be hung (I thought I was the only one that inanimate pieces talked to:-D)!! XOXO

    1. It is not from my daughter, though I went with my daughter. This was done by Catherine Holman. The link is provided...hope that you'll visit her and see what she does.

  14. Boy you really know the questions to ask that set me squirming. Splurges, what splurges? Both my husband and I got some splurges for Christmas. He got something that's NRA approved and I got a new camera...oye! I have a couple things that are museum quality framed and it really does make a difference and ouch it is expensive. Love the chalk art!

  15. I love the chalkboards I see in Blogland, but alas, I am not an artist so I could not draw anything on it that I would want to display. Writing, maybe, but definitely not drawing. Your print is beautiful, and I am sure it will let you know where it wants to hang out in your home. You deserve a spurge every once in a while, Vee. xo

  16. I love chalkboard art, too! I created one I'll be posting about tomorrow, hopefully. Yours looks great!

  17. Oh Vee this is such fun! I've not heard of chalk board art but we always had a large slate chalk board at home by the front door where every appointment, message, and "diddle" was displayed. I have a little one by my front door and right now it simply says "let it snow". I must get more creative and maybe even get a bigger board!

  18. The chalkboard art is really nice. I don't have anything like that.
    Love the print!!
I always have my camera and take pictures all day but mostly I take them when I'm walking.

  20. Your Catherine H. folk art print just looks gorgeous! I love her pretty scenes! And your chalkboard art. I have a really old chalkboard slate. I haven't tried to write on it...I don't know why! lol Enjoy your afternoon! Stay warm!

  22. The Catherine Holman art is beautiful! I do like the double matting. It really makes the print pop!

Glad you tried the chalkboard printable. I saw your comment at Brenda's. We all like the same one :) The other one you chose was my next choice.

Here's my tip for chalkboard art. I use white graphite paper. I print out whatever it is that I want in all the delicious fonts available and use graphite paper to transfer it to the chalkboard. Then I fill it in with chalk paint pens. Very easy and anyone can be a chalkboard artist using that technique. I guess I should do a post about it :D

  23. Thanks for the clarification. It should definitely have UV protection if it was offered to you as museum glass. Non-glare is an additional option. It's important to know whether you got acrylic or actual glass because you can not use typical window cleaning solutions on acrylic. We use acrylic for our photo frames, so I clean with plain water and a microfiber cloth. One of the advantages of acrylic (besides fragility) is that it weighs a lot less than glass.

  24. Hi Vee!

These are beauties, thanks for the links! I am getting some wonderful ideas for next year! I love all the tips that the others have left comments about - I may be able to do this!! I so love folk art and Catherine's is just beautiful!

  25. Having a print, cross stitch piece or other treasure professionally framed these days is a shock, but as you said...so worth it. They do such a great job and then you feel that the treasure is truly preserved.

I'll be back sometime this weekend to visit the links. I'm usually here early in the morning, but this day has been a busy, but productive one!

Yes, we are getting a new treasure. We've been waiting since early September for it's arrival and it made it's arrival Tuesday. I don't know that I'll blog about it, but I am excited.

  26. Oh, I forgot to tell you how great your chalkboard art is. If I created such masterpieces, they would be sprayed and preserved!

  28. I've been looking at these printable chalkboard art pages. I love them. This week has been crazy busy - teaching full time - and not much else is getting done. Maybe next week.
I love how people read and focus in on one thing rather than the entire post. Are we all too busy?

  29. I LOVE your chalkboard art! Wow. That looks hard to do but I guess the printable stencils would be easier. Fun! Your newly framed print is gorgeous. I love the double matting and the colours which makes the print just pop right out. Perfect and so worth the extra money.

  31. Morning Vee! Hey, great job on the chalkboard art! I like a clean slate, too - chalk dust on a supposed-to-be-clean board feels like someone dragging their fingernails across it!

Very nice framing on the print - very smart framer, and very smart choice on framing and museum glass.

Now, WOULD YOU PLEASE LET YOUR DAUGHTER KNOW THAT I WANT TO SEE HER PAINTINGS???? :) Have a wonderful day!

    PS - love the geese!

  32. Thanks for sharing my artwork on your post Vee! I've thought about printing out that chalk art too.
I've been trying to reply all morning. First my laptop mouse wouldn't work and then that computer froze. It would let me type two letters and then freeze. Now as I'm typing my letters are moving to different locations. I'm not sure what's going on. If you got an email from me more than once, it's because I kept hitting send and it didn't do anything. I apologize. Hopefully my time away from painting will go better than this.
    Hugs,
    Cathie

  33. I have been knee deep in packing boxes-- sorting sorting, wrapping wrapping. It is getting tiresome!

Catherine's lovely print is worth the special frame, Vee! It looks beautiful!

I loved your "anguished hinges" geese in the next post --what fun to see them flying in formation like that! The geese around here are less coordinated.

  34. I love the picture of the geese..... how can anyone not believe in God when we watch the birds....amazing.

The chalk board art is great! I love it and the art work by your daughter and the framing...... looking forward to seeing it's final resting place in your home.

  37. ((Vee)) Had to go pretty far down the blog to be able to leave a message. Knowing your tender heart I know how yesterday's evil act must have impacted you. It is good to know we can cry out to our Heavenly Father for those who are in such deep grief.

The chalkboards are very cool. I have one that had been Warren's Grandma's. I should do something special on it for Christmas. When and if I get to decorate!
