A Reader's Favorite

Note the year...

I had a delightful email from a reader named Peggy yesterday. She said: Since 2007 I have always gone back to one of your Christmas vignettes and used it during the Christmas season as a background on the computer. It's the picture of the peppermints in a jar - sitting by a basket lamp that holds pinecones, with the December 2007 calendar behind it. This year I decided to let you know!

Thank you, Peggy. Much appreciated and glad I am that you enjoy that photo even if it was taken with an old point and shoot.

I had forgotten all about that photo so had to go see it again for myself and I smiled to note the sweet little tree that we (my sister and I) used to set in the bowl somewhere in the kitchen...no room for it anymore. There's the pink depression glass containing the starlight mints, a bottle of liqueur so that we could serve it to anyone who enjoyed a special something at Christmastime. It's a pretty bottle and, if I still had it, I'd be tempted to display it again.

I am not opposed to an occasional drink, but when I married a man who had given up alcohol years ago, I gave it up, too, as a way to honor him. I didn't want him to ever smell it on my breath.

And there's my wonky lamp that now pays service in the sewing room. I was a bit more of a prim person in those days than I am now.

So this whole photography thing has me thinking about photos. There are many blogs where one photo stands out in my memory. I always see Mt. Cheam when I think of Judy's Front Porch. I think of King's Landing when I think of Pam's Playing With My Camera. Eagles and bears come immediately to mind when I think of Donna at Cottage Days and Journeys. Name a blog and I can name a photo I have loved there. I'll name one more...Jill's work with snowflake photography has been exceptional.

Oh, if anyone was wondering, my word for 2013 is DARE.

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!

  5. RE: Your question in my blog entry... "Do I name Dragons?" -sigh- I don't HAVE a Dragon. So I have none, to name. Therein lies my problem.

All I have, is Fantasy. -sigh-

  7. It was so thoughtful of Peggy to let you know how much she loved your photo. It warms the heart to learn such things, doesn't it? It is a charming vignette! (I absolutely love the tree in a bowl!)

My guess was wrong. But "dare" is an exciting word for the new year. Do let us know when you implement it...we're all ears! (I must add that I am the least daring person I know. Maybe that should be my word. But it probably will not be. Ever.)

  9. What a sweet comment from your reader! I need to change my wallpaper on my computer too. It's still a fall scene. Thanks so much for the nod to my blog. You are a sweetheart. When I think of you I think of your kitchen which is so cozy and full of great vintage things. Love your choice of "dare" as your word of the year. I wonder what you are daring to do. I hope you have a wonderful weekend Vee.

  12. Thanks for the shout out on the snowflakes photos Vee. I should share that after so many hours of shooting them their images are burned into my eyes; when I close my eyes I see snowflakes now.

I DARE you to go someplace new, as an adventure, alone!

  14. What a great post Vee. That photo reminds me of my grandmother. She kept peppermints all year long. DARE is a great word. Mine is NONJUDGMENTAL. Have a gay nephew who, and his partner, are planning to adopt a child. I am learning to understand so much better, many things I never did before. Blessings dear friend.

  15. And wouldn't you know it...there is no picture of Mt. Cheam to be seen at My Front Porch today. The mountain is obscured in the clouds this morning.

Dare. Good word. I'm looking forward to seeing what you all dare to try in 2013. And your theme song? 'Dare to be a Daniel...dare to stand alone...'?

Thank heaven for the internet, so we can read what people are thinking deep in their hearts and see what pleases and thrills them and how they pad their nests. I am daily amazed at the beauty of people and their words and worlds. What a heaven on earth. :)

  34. I love photos and get inspired by them, too. My favorite ones, just like my favorite vignettes, are ones that tell a little story in the picture. That one does.

And your word for the year is very, very close to mine! I even considered it, but went just slightly different. I take it as a sign of affirmation that I'm thinking like you.

Because I really do like the way you think.

  35. OH..and won't we enjoy seeing you take courage in so many ways this coming year. I'll not dare you ....too often.
