Making a Path

All boleros all the time here lately. They bloom and are spent all within about a week's time. I sure do enjoy this one special week of summer when the bolero lilies are blooming. This is a header I might usually feature except that it feels "too hot" with all the actual heat and humidity.

~Bolero Lily Love~

This is why we were off on our little trip yesterday. Something must be done about the pathways that are either packed earth or have small strips of grass between two gardens. I'm tired of mowing the grass right into the garden and the little protectors there are not working to keep the clippings out.

These stones are the remedy. Seven of them for ten dollars. What a deal! John knows all the best places. He's bringing over his square shovel when he comes home for lunch and I'll be getting to work this afternoon, if the rain holds off. We found the crushed brick, too, but didn't purchase any.

And we managed to have some fun in the middle of errand running — breakfast and supper out. We can return tonight and have this for supper.

The whole world looks a little hazy like this...humid and blah. Now we're looking at another week of rain. So weary of this wet weather we're having, though as John says, "It's better than no weather at all."

Wanna complain about the weather or praise it?

Love Vee

  1. You are offering me the chance to complain about the weather? Oh dear. I'm afraid I do that too much...but okay. It is way too hot and humid for me!!

(For the record, I try extremely hard not to complain any other time of year. No complaining about the rain or the cold or the snow. I reserve all my complaints to the heat and humidity.)

  2. Those flowers do make a brilliant show. Warm-ish-looking though. ,-)

    Ahhhhhh, path making!

Lovely when done. But isn't this awful weather, not the best time to attempt it? Oh I'd never let him do path making, in this weather. Ahemmm, and it goes without saying, I'd not be trying it myself. -grinnnnn-

Weather... Hot, humid, means I'm stuck inside, with A/C. Ugh... But I'm glad we have the A/C wall units, to use.

HOW does one make up one's mind, which side one is on, in this hot humid weather?!?!?!?!?

    -grin-

  3. Those lilies are gorgeous! I never have luck with anything from a bulb. Your pathways are going to look great. It seems all I do is complain about the weather. xo

  4. We have millions of rocks all over HT. Too bad you live so far away, I could give you all you wanted.
I could always mail them to you!! : )

Are those plants also called tiger lilies? They are so pretty and I love the water drops on them.

    1. No. But they may be a variant of tiger lilies, but they have no spots or stripes.

  5. I love stones!!! I'm sure Maine has TONS! My ex husband was a stone mason and I have a LOT of rocks around here. Louis Dean is happy the weather is DRY here as he has dug another ditch and has the deck all catty wompered!!
Your flowers are beautiful. I have to hand water ours daily in this Texas heat!

  6. Gorgeous!! So glad you shared them with us.
Great deal on your stones. I think they are going to look great on your path.
Humidity = Blech!!! There, I feel so much better now.
    Hope your rain holds off.

  8. Vee, I guess we are one week ahead of you because my boleros are on the other side already. I was deadheading yesterday afternoon and stood there and debated if they were too done to leave. I left them. They still are a spot of color and I'll leave them for my sibling dinner.
I'm going to Phoenix next week and just looked at the weather forecast. Do people actually survive that kind of heat? It's raining here again and I think I'll just enjoy it.

  9. Those lilies are gorgeous, Vee! Worth it even if it is only for a week. I'm not complaining about the heat and humidity - just glad to be out enjoying it again. :)

  10. Those are so beautiful Vee! What amazing color!

I do not like heat and humidity, Sam - I - Am! Makes it difficult to enjoy being outside!

Your John is a wise man - "Better than no weather at all!"

  11. No complaining about the weather (ha)...since it may not be raining tomorrow. (Or at least the tomorrow after that!) We made four attempts (stop/starts) at getting our massive lawns mowed this week...between showers. It is finished...and by Saturday we will have sunshine...so they say. I think your rocks were a good deal! We made our stepping stone pathway from rocks we gathered in a quarry...and spent a lot of time trying to make the step surfaces flat. Yours are flat. That's a good thing!

  12. I'll try not to complain. It's not terribly humid. I love listening to the rain fall at night. The tomatoes are under shelter so they won't suffer, and the rest of the garden likes the rain. Still...I'm counting on the weather forecasters being correct for the weekend.
I love rock paths. Yours will look great! Hope you show us the after photo. Don't work too hard in the heat.

  13. I'm just cracking up about the retort from John "Better than no weather at all!" I'm afraid I have my own inner humidity going on so I am happy not to be in a weather humid locale....
Love the rock path idea! I was looking at a few paths and thinking it would be nice to have one here.

  14. Glad you were successful in your quest, and interesting that the proposed header photo makes you feel warm. I guess it is red and what you have there now does seem cool and serene. Ah our cool, low humidity spring spoiled us as now the humidity has arrived in full swing. Our variety of bolero lilly we call tiger lillies and they are usually orange and just coming out.

The lilies are so pretty, too bad they don't last longer.
I've always liked stone work on a path. Can't wait to see
    it done.

  16. Beautiful color on those lilies! I can't complain about the weather. It is sunny in the morning, then an afternoon shower and the sun comes back out for a couple of hours early evening.

  17. Those lilies make me feel warm even if this summer we are having doesn't!
Your path is going to be grand.

  18. Your lilies are stunning, just perfect. Love the dew on them. I am glad today is less humid and cooler, but just want it to rain at night, then sunny during the day, but cool. No sweating in heaven. ~ Abby

  19. Our weather, while a tad rainy at times - is just about perfect - I can't imagine staying in a climate that makes so many people grumpy about summer. We have very mild winters, maybe one or two snows that last a few days, gloriously long springs - fabulous mild summers with sun and a few days of rain to keep things green, and long slow autumns. Spring is my most favorite - summer is next - it is my favorite - and autumn and winter are wonderful. This time of year everything is green in the PNW - and flowers are blooming so fast you can barely keep track of what is new in the gardens.

  20. Well, I'm back into my jeans, t shirt and zip sweater today Vee. That means it's chilly and damp. I'd rather have the humidity and heat and sunshine but at lease it's not raining today and there isn't another severe thunder storm watch on. How's that for standing "on the fence"! Haha. I love the bolero lilies and had no idea that's what they are called. They are just stunning! I can't wait to see your new pathway. I'm sure it will look lovely. Your header is very pretty. Did you go back for the pot pie? Sounds quite yummy when it's too hot to turn the stove on. :)

  21. My lilies are still in bud stage. With rising temps up to over 100 by Sunday I am afraid they will be a very brief garden display. I am headed for CT next week; it is forecast to be cooler there than here.

  22. Muy caliente! That's about the extent of my high school Spanish:) Love that vibrant color.

We're having thunderstorms right now - wish they would bring the heat and humidity down instead of making it more humid!

    Enjoy your pot pie!

  23. I'm ok with the weather. Scorching hot. Occasional storm. But beautiful nonetheless.
I have been looking for rocks....preferably FREE. And I found lots of them! I will post on it soon. That's where my new ride came in handy.....again.

  24. After last year's drought, I'm happy with the rain. I will complain about the straight-line winds and hail, but I have to give thanks that it wasn't a tornado.

  25. It seems as if so many of my blogging friends have had soo much rain they are practically swimming, and the rest of them are having humidity and heat. For now, here in California, it is really quite beautiful (don't hate me, the heat is coming! haha) It was about 80 today and cools off nice with ocean breezes to the mid 60's at night. June is usually pretty bearable. And July is not bad as a general rule. But come August and September and sometimes clean into Oct we sizzle. I am dreading it. And as for rain...what's that? It is soo dry here it is really quite bad. Setting things up for a bad fire season. I am thinking everywhere has it's thorns, haha. I LOVED the flower btw. Don't think I've ever seen one. The rocks will look wonderful I am thinking. Hope you had a good day Vee.

  26. Oh Vee, your words of cheer helped me so much. And, just wandering around your garden and seeing what you're up to did wonders for me.

Don't over do it out there.

My new book (the one I excerpted from) is all about Maine and won't be out for a few years. I still have LOTS of work to do on it too. The new book will be out in fall 2014.

Yes, I will and do love and enjoy the birds (and you),

    Love,
    S

  27. Chicken pot pie sounds delicious to me.
    Your flowers are pretty.
Our weather is hot (high 90's) and we have rain just about every afternoon.

  28. Loved this post and your lilies, Vee. Our lilies have come and gone...although the old fashioned roadside lilies are in full bloom.

Hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms here. I keep thinking we will finish the patio work, but it's just so hot, we can't enjoy sitting out there right now, anyway.

  29. Well....you KNOW how dry we are in West Texas...and so I guess I can complain about that....but....we did get a good rain the other day.
AND...we have NO beautiful flowers like yours....YOURS are so beautiful because...say it with me....YOU GOT RAIN !! :))

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh so pretty! I love John's comment about the weather, we're supposed to keep having rain as well. I keep thinking about last year and the bad drought we had in our area, tho I'm tired of the rain I'll take it :)

  31. I'm not a big fan of lilies but those are beautiful all clustered together like that. I think the stones will add a nice effect to the garden. Stone paths are always so inviting.

  32. Those flowers are gorgeous. And I think the weather is too hot and too humid - but apparently the flowers love it. sandie

  33. John's right though - I think I need an attitude adjustment almost daily.

It's HOT and humid and then rains, then sunny and really hot - just can't seem to stand working in the garden till end of day when the skeeters come out and eat me alive.

So I am indoors more often than I care to be - but alas, better than no weather, eh?

    Those lilies are AMAZING!

  34. Are you sure you don't have any Canadian blood in you? LOL We are famous for complaining about the weather. It sounds like you will go with the crushed red brick and the new stones.
Breakfast AND supper out! Now that's a fun day of no cooking for you.

  35. I have already complained about our weather so I guess I should praise that it wasn't quite so hot today and the storm we had wasn't quite so stormy.
Besides, I am spending my time grousing about furniture. LOL

(I love those lilies. I have begged and pleaded for mine to bloom this year, and nadda. Every time one starts to bloom, rain comes and destroys it. )

  36. I want to complain we do not handle rain well too wet.

  37. What pretty flowers, and I love the idea for your walkway. We had some pretty tiger lilies that the rain destroyed, but I also have some day lilies that I inherited from my sister when she moved to Florida. They are so pretty--I wish they would last longer! Hot and humid here, but at least I don't.
have to water as much since there has been a lot of rain too. The impatients are thriving without much work, (which is one reason I plant them!)

  38. Your bolero lilies are such a pretty color!

It has been hot here, but NO HUMIDITY! :) Not having humidity makes the heat all the more tolerable.

We could use rain..wish we could be sent soem of your rain!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh yeah, I can complain! I had to get out today in this awful heat and my car said it was 102 degrees. It eventually cooled down to a mild (haha) 99 degrees. The heat plus the humidity makes the farmer's daughter one cranky lady. Funny how I never noticed this heat so much when I was a lot younger!

(And the news lately just makes me hotter, too. Sorry, I just had to add that. Will it ever end?)

Your bolero lilies are beautiful, but I must admit they are a hot color! Hope you show us some photos of that new pathway you're going to make.

  40. Beautiful lilies, lilies are probably my favorite flower, especially the Casablanca! Love what you're doing with the walkway too. If you plant creeping thyme or other herbs between your stepping stones it will smell amazing! Can't wait to see the finished product! Have a great day!

  41. You opened up conversation about the weather? That's what everyone here talks about! But I love it and it's not nearly as hot here as say...Arkansas, where most of my family lives. And we had a nice rain shower last night and it's so green and lush! I see that it has cooled off there now. I'm off to leave a very brief comment on your new post! heehee!

  42. I've never seen lilies like these before - they are GORGEOUS!

  43. The lilies are gorgeous! And yes, I would like to complain about the rain. I wish it would give us a break too! This may be a record-breaking year for rainfall.
