Window Boxes

Thank you for all the fun with yesterday's Note Card Party. You're the best and so good at promotion and visiting each other and being encouraging, not to mention the fact that you share some awesome photos.

The whole goal of this party is to retrieve four old photos from the archives, dust them off, and give them another opportunity to be seen. It is not only fun, but we meet new bloggers along the way. Win-win!

~~~
The other evening when John and I were out for an ice cream cone, I asked him to drive me by the hardware store for a photo opportunity. There are two windowboxes; I wanted this one for the seed ad behind it.
~Plant Hart Seeds~
Once upon a time there was a window box on my house, back before the new siding. Window boxes can be messy so we opted not to include one after the new siding went on. Sometimes, when I see a pretty window box, I miss it.
~2007 Window Box~
Pardon the old photo...it is kind of fun to compare with my header photo, though. The garden has changed and grown quite a bit.
~2013 sans window box and razzle-dazzle~
All this must have something to do with looking for photos for the Note Card Party. That's when I ran into 2007. Yes, things have certainly changed.
Do you have any window boxes? I'd love to see them!
  1. I love window boxes -- romantic! I don't have any, but have thought several times about hanging something off the balcony ... still thinking! Lovely photos, Vee.
  2. I have one out on our old playhouse which is now a potting shed. It's kind of boring with just begonias. My mother has them on many windows in her house and changes them out seasonally. I love them. I will try to get a photo if this rain ever stops.
    I'm almost certain, though, that it is never going to stop. Ever. As I recall, you know that feeling.
  3. Good Morning, Vee. Thank you for hosting the Note Card Party. I enjoyed meeting new blog friends and seeing so many beautiful pictures.
    Our first home had window boxes and I loved them. They are messy, though. I rarely see window boxes but I'll certainly be on the lookout for a photo op.
    Wishing you a good day.
  4. I mentioned that in passing to Handyman the other day..that I think window boxes would be nice. He looked off down the street as if something were going on there. It was then that I knew I wouldn't be getting any of those soon. Your pics are lovely.
  5. That's a very pretty window box on the store Vee. I also like the one on your house a while back. I do have window boxes but they are on the deck rail instead. {I posted them yesterday.} I do love a window box under windows though as it makes a house look like a cottage. It would be fun to decorate them all year too with pumpkins and mums in the fall and evergreens in winter. Spring is that unfortunate season when one can't do a whole lot with them other than spring bulbs planted under the evergreens I guess. I wonder if anyone has tried that. The note card party was fun yesterday. Thanks for hosting it. I thought there was a great turnout for summertime.
  6. After seeing the window box picture at your hardware store and the one on your house in years gone by, I am reluctant to post a picture of mine, but I will soon. Your pictures are just beautiful. I think I need to be more creative with my window box.
  7. No window boxes at The Old Parsonage - you're right too messy:(
    I love looking at comparison photos from years passed.
    Enjoy your day!
  8. We don't have window boxes, though I've always admired them. I've wondered about them being messy, though, and harming the siding, as you alluded to. People who have them must decide that their beauty is worth the trouble... =)
  9. No window boxes here. I did have a couple of planters on my porch with petunias, and as the petunias filled out and got longer, the flower stuck to my newly painted porch railing when it rains and now I have to find a way to scrub them off without scratching the paint, so I know what you mean about messy!
  10. Your window box was so pretty...no wonder you miss it! The one at the hardware store is lovely too.
    We have window boxes at both kitchen windows. We always plant red geraniums and trailing vinca vine, and enjoy seeing the pops of red from inside too. This year is not one of their best years though. They are looking scraggly (too much rain?), so I have not been inclined to photograph them.
  11. Good morning! I LOVE window boxes but don't have one and never have. Soo romantic and homey looking. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your header btw. Your home just screams out welcome. Enjoy your day!
  12. I love window boxes too! At our former cottage, we had a HUGE one that hung off of our kitchen window. It was located on the other side of our sink. It was work to keep it watered during the summer, but it payed off in dividends every time I looked out while doing the dishes. We used inserts for planting, so we could easily plop them in the wooden box. But we don't have any boxes at our current cottage. The style of the house doesn't lend itself to them, and there's no way I want anybody drilling holes in the brick.
    Your cottage looks adorable, no matter the year!
  13. I lucked out...the lady across the street has a wonderful window box in direct view of my front window. I sit and enjoy hers.
    To paraphrase JFK: ask not what you can do for your neighbors; ask what your neighbors can do for you.
    Ahem.
    I used to be a "can-do!" girl; now I am a "why do?" old woman. Especially in the summertime.
  14. Just one window box here, on the kitchen window, outside the sink. It's full of pink petunias this year, and in the winter I make an arrangement of cedar and fir and berries. It's nice to look out over the sink at the colour.
  15. No window boxes for me either Vee. I featured a couple of homes in my column a few years back that had spectacular window boxes on the second floor windows but either the people moved or don't plant them any more.
    Other than them, no one around here does window boxes.
    The note card party was fun as usual, a friendly group that participates.
  16. I love the look of a well manicured window box....Mine wouldn't likely look so nice if I had them. But I pretend with hangers on my deck.
  17. No window boxes here but like you I was surprised looking back at photos to see how things have changed at this old house. The plants are significantly taller and fuller. It's fun to see the differences. Hope you have a great weekend.
  18. I have three and like to decorate them for Winter as well. You've got me thinking I should pull up some pictures to compare - maybe a future blog post? Your header is beautiful Vee and I LOVE the window box you photographed!
  19. We had window boxes in one of our other house but if not good support they can damage the house around the windows, as you know. I do love them though. Your house is so neat and comfy looking. I enjoy your blog so much.
  20. The hardware store has a very pretty window box. I love the way the flowers curve and swirl.
    No window boxes here, although I've always admired them and would love to have some one day.
    Gardens do change, don't they? Plants mature, some die, others get yanked out. Not much on this old earth stays the same.
    Have a wonderful day, Vee and thank you for hosting another fun gathering!
  21. I haven't put flowers in my window boxes for a few years now. I love them but haven't had the time to mess with them.
  22. I do, I do....but mine is pretty pitiful, compared to these. Full shade so don't have much color in mine....I have a draft ready to finish, featuring this little cutie that Mr. Sweet built a couple yrs ago.
    Now, of course....I'm hungry for an ice cream cone.......*heavy sigh
  23. I used to have window boxes in California - but none here. I do miss them, but our house is not set up to accept window boxes, so I garden on the deck instead.
  24. I have always wanted a window box, Vee, never thought about them being messy, but I guess with the watering and spraying dirt, not happening for me. I look forward to your monthly Note Card party, it is the best of blogging as far as I am concerned. And as I have told you many many times, you have such lovely followers. Each month I get to meet one or two more.
    And as another person commented, now I want an ice cream cone. xo
  25. I've never had window boxes although I do like them! I just don't have the right windows I guess. :) Isn't it fun to look through old photos and see the changes? Hope you're staying cool! xo
  26. Nope, no window boxes here. At least, not on the windows. I have 3 lined up on a concrete retaining wall. I've always loved seeing them like the one you pictured. So pretty!
    I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I love your header photo.
  27. I love window boxes too but have never had any. My sister in law has beautiful ones and it makes me want to drive to her house to photograph them.
  28. I have never had a window box but always wanted them. I have a good spot for some in the kitchen windows facing the deck - I hate seeing deck and not flowers..............keep putting it off, just not sure..........I worry about the mess, too, and whether or not I want/need or just because it is something I don't have...............trying to keep that in check as I get older. I think long and hard and then another season goes by and I haven't done it. Works like a charm, haha.
    Hugs.
  29. I love window boxes and that one at the hardware store is a dazzler!
    I don't have any window boxes, because I think I like the idea of a window box more than the work that would be required to care for a window box. I have enough trouble watering these pots on the deck....sigh. One day, when I don't have a thousand things vying for my attention, I'll be an eccentric old lady with the most beautiful window boxes on my sweet cottage. Then I'll pay my grandkids to water than for me! LOL!
    Best to John!
  30. No window boxes most of my windows open out, I would knock the tops off the plants every time I opened the window.
  31. Oh how I wish I had window boxes.. Love this Vee!!! :)
    my window are right in the sun.. and if I did that every plant would die :(
  32. I've always wanted the "window box white picket fence" house. Maybe my next life. These are so cute.
    ReplyDelete
  33. I also love pretty window boxes! I'm afraid they would become feeding troughs for the deer if I installed any here--lol! So sorry I missed another Note card party! I don't know when life will ever get less busy here again --I love being near family but the days are now too short and computer time is nill. Maybe in winter things will get better?
  34. Pretty window box with the flags.
  35. I'm smiling over here...at your reason for not having window boxes. 'They can be messy.' I suppose they can, but I love our, and they are over a garden area, so I don't mind if leaves falls and water spills. But I have opted not to have hanging baskets on 'my front porch' for precisely that same reason...that they can be messy. I figured I'd always be cleaning up water spills and leaves off the porch. Great pic's, Vee.
