You're Invited

To the Paper Doll wedding...

Grab your pearls and let's go!

This is the joy of paper doll weddings...even though they happened nearly 60 years ago...the copyright on this set of paper dolls is 1954...the wedding goes on and on.

My sister and her husband were clearing out the cottage. They took load after load to the transfer station. She and I had last done this about a decade ago and it desperately needed doing again. In the process, she rescued my paper doll set.

When I was a child, all I needed was a set of paper dolls like this one to keep me happy for days and days on end, perhaps even an entire summer.

Here's the bride...what's up with that pink wedding dress? I hope it's

only a matter of marketing and not morals.

Edited to Add: Thanks to Jill's comment, and she would know because she's a fashionista, I was able to find a pink wedding dress from the 50s.

Here's the bride's trousseau. It's a little worse for wear. In fact, the dolls themselves have seen far better times. A bridesmaid has lost her feet and the groom, poor man, has lost his head.

It warms my heart to see how fond of the headless groom the bride still is.;D

The more I think about it, the more I am thinking this "bridesmaid" doesn't go with this set. I got a clue when I found Sonja Henie skating through the batch.

You've waited long enough. Here are the bride and the flower girl in all their cotton candy glory.

I may have smoothed their ruffled pixels too much, though doesn't it give that misty out of time appearance?

Some other things I'd promised I'll save for another day. You have a good one!

  1. What a fun find! So glad your sister rescued them.
The pink wedding gown is a bit mysterious. As for the headless groom... with a swanky outfit like his, who needs a head?

  2. Memories... Your precious memories...

I had "coloring books" of the movie stars, which I loved, and loved, and loved. But unhappily, they got stored, where it was musty... So the bag of them, is the worse for wear.

    I still can't throw it away...... :-)

1954... The year I graduated from HS. :-)

1958... The year I graduated from college and was married. In white lace, btw. :-)

  5. Good morning! Boy did this ever bring back memories. I LOVED playing paper dolls. I could play for hours and hours. Another thing from the past....I found an old set when going through mom's things and decided to keep them and give them to my 8 and 4 year old granddaughters. They had NO idea what they were. They quickly discovered they loved them! Enjoy your day Vee!

  8. Ahhhh...my sister and I whiled away many a summer hour playing paper dolls! Such happy memories! My own girls have enjoyed playing paper dolls, although "paper dolls" these days are not only paper, but vinyl and magnetic too.

Yours are great! Love the headless groom! :D

  9. I love paper dolls; I use to make my own and design all their clothes. You just gave me a big smile seeing these and I can't wait until my granddaughters are old enough to play with them. Such a beautiful bride and the good thing is that she never has to complain about her husband's snoring:-D XOXO

  14. I knew if it kept raining we would get to play paper dolls! The bride and little flower girl are precious. Just makes me feel good all over to see the beauty of these and imagine sitting on the floor as a girl. We could still sit on the floor and play....but who's going to help us up? heehee! Sweet Southern hugs!

  15. Oh, memories Vee. I remember the clothes not always staying on when you pressed the paper tabs around the body. There was nothing this elaborate in my collection and I love the bridal set.
I wonder what our grandchildren would think of paper dolls today? I suppose with no technology attached they might not be interested!

  16. Oh boy this really takes us back to a different time. Love your commentary. We all need to stick by our grooms when they lose their heads! :)

  18. o, Paper Dolls were SUCH a huge part of my childhood. Why didn't I save them?? Bwaaaaaaaaaa..
and, at first, I thought you were going to have a Paper Doll Party and I was going to be able to attend because I have several sets of Mary Engelbreit's paper dolls. In fact...I already have my Paper Doll post buried deep in Drafts....so, see, I would have been ready. :))

  19. I loved my paper dolls and made more clothing for them from scraps of paper. What fun we had. How wonderful that you were able to play with your very own paper dolls again.

  22. Hi Vee!

What a treasure!! I love paper dolls, I still print them off of the computer for my grandchildren, and they love them too! My favorite as a child was, The Lennon Sisters, set that I had. I wish I had them now...

Such a fun post, thanks for sharing and bringing back some fun memories for me too! Pink dresses? Well, I guess that times have changed some - but it is still beautiful!

    Hugs,

  23. Oh the treasure! I am trying to remember if I had a similar set. I was big time into playing with baby dolls and so the paper doll set would have taken a back seat. Thanks for sharing!

  24. Gosh, how I used to love playing with paper dolls. They were rather fragile though, weren't they? I think I saw some in a Cracker Barrel Restaurant just recently. Not too many around anymore. Kudos to your sister for retrieving your treasures.

  27. These are great. What a fun walk down memory lane. Like you I love my paper dolls! Do you remember the color-forms? They were peel & stick clothing on paper doll like characters!

  28. Well Vee, your headless groom looks very dapper in his bermuda shorts and summer shirt. And that cotton candy bridal dress is pure fluff. How fun! I loved paper dolls too and so did our daughter. I have a vintage set from the 20's that were my mothers. I got caught up on your other posts and I see you've been busy. I'm pretty tired from the grandkids (not used to their busyness) and all the heat and humidity has drained me too. They only have one day left before they leave. :( Fun times! Take care. Pam

  29. The early 1950s brides were all about Mamie Eisenhower pink: pink bridal gowns, pink kitchen appliances and pink bathrooms!
Your bride was quite stylish...even if she has odd taste in men.

  30. Thank you for the beautiful wedding...pink wedding dress.....I hadn't hear of that!

  31. The poor headless groom!! My daughter has several boxes of paper dolls, each box a different room in the house. She had such fun setting them all up. They are carefully put away now for a future child:)

  32. I love paper dolls too. I would anxiously wait for my mother to let me cut out Betsy McCall every month!

  40. I've enjoyed this memory of my own childhood. I hate to say this, knowing that you would like for it to stop raining. How could you have ever found the time for this fantastic post if the sun was out? :-)

  41. This is the cutest post!! What memories your paper doll wedding brings back. My favorite paper doll set was the wedding one. Thanks for such sweet thoughts of the past!

    What a treat....

  43. Oh my!
Vee I would have played with these for days too way back when.....
Weren't we easily pleased as children? In my day we didn't have a car or a television and I remember the day my mother got her first washing machine and fridge! We used to have a tiny Ice Chest which was kept under the house and the "Ice Man" called every so often and added more ice - we survived!!

Now I know the reason I missed this post - I was still in France and didn't have computer access.
In the village they only have dial up, it was all too difficult so I put blogging on hold till I returned home!!
