Labor Day

Hope that you've enjoyed a break from all your labors today as we end the last holiday weekend of summer. Nothing like going out with a bang. In our case, it was with a splash.

We have been having a pretty quiet holiday weekend. I have been most blessed all the same. John was taking notes during the sermon Sunday and pointed one of them out to me. It said, "Lunch?" So after church, we zipped off in my car leaving John's truck in the parking lot. This is only a problem when we forget to pick it back up on our way by. We have forgotten more than a few times.

So it was a lunch, three flea markets, and an ice cream Sunday afternoon. We had been out for ice cream Saturday evening as well. That's when John announced that he'd be having a banana split. He couldn't remember the last time he'd had one, which makes it altogether too long ago. So he had his split and I had a small hot fudge sundae. Yummo!

This morning started with coffee, Bible study on tv, and breakfast at our local haunt. The parking lot was packed with cars from all over. I feel sorry for those poor people who must return to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Connecticut. It means that summertime in Vacationland is over.

~look at those drips!~

Labor Day 2013 is one that many, including my grands, had counted on to be sunny, yet has been rainy and miserable. We needed a canoe to get to the door both at the restaurant and at our own home.

We have just returned from visiting the disappointed grands. I had some Smarties to deliver and some pillowcases I had made, and some fun little workbooks, and a cake pan shaped like a baseball glove, and some cupcakes and cookies. I hope that it helps with the sorrow of missing out on a beach day and a BBQ.

~my favorite candy from Canada~

Oh and we made a lovely trade...they got Smarties from Canada and we got toffee. ☺

Enjoy the remainder of your day!

  1. Such fun! Love the local bits and pieces and a touch of family time too!
The clouds are piling up quite black outside just now but I think we will still go a bob in the lake.

  2. Your Sunday sounds wonderful, especially the visits to 3 flea markets. Sounds like you made the best out of a wet Labor Day. Toffee, yum!

    Smiles,

  3. You made the most of a wet weekend. Smarties and McIntosh toffee - Canadian treats, for sure! What about Caramilk bars? Are you a fan? I used to be but find them too sweet now. Any flea market finds that you'll share with us?

After our gloriously sunny day yesterday, rain began in the early hours and continued through the morning. Now there are patches of blue and no rain, but I'm so glad that we listened to the call yesterday afternoon.

What Bible study do you do on TV?

  4. I would love to try the toffee! I'm sure the grands enjoyed their treats very much. No rain here, but it is so hot/muggy. Probably the last big boating day of the year for our nearby lake. Hope your week ahead is filled with blessings.

  5. Love your header! That's what all our windowsills look like this time of year - a tomato or two ripening here and there. And vases of flowers. Lovely!
I've never eaten that toffee. I think you got the better deal. :-)

    1. Smarties in Canada are much different from Smarties in the U.S. Canadian Smarties are a little like our M&Ms. Our Smarties are sour.

  6. This is the first time in a long time that the whole labor day weekend has been without rain here in the Northwest. I'm sorry for your grands disappointment! Now you have me trying to decide if I really want a banana split or a hot fudge sundae! Oye! So many good memories of both those treats!
Happy Labor Day to you and John!

  7. It sounds like a cozy kind of day, Rain here on and off too. And you have me thinking about ice cream.

  8. Sounds like a great weekend, Vee, in spite of the rain! We have had very hot and humid weather. And occasional rain.
I could eat a hot fudge sundae every day of the week!

  9. Never a dull moment my friend. A note in church to go out for lunch, that is so cute, and then to have ice cream two days in a row. We've been out for lunch plenty but have not done one drive down to the country store on the highway for ice cream this summer.
I don't envy the people heading south along our routes, after a long weekend, it's usually bumper to bumper.
Macintosh's toffee was a real treat as kid, today I'm afraid it might pull my fillings out. Maybe they're from eating the toffee, or brown sugar sandwiches the babysitter fed me. LOL
Glad you had a nice Labour Day weekend, rained like the dickens here again this morning too.

  10. Such a delicious life! I love chocolate fudge sundaes and MacIntosh toffee! And now one of the most beautiful seasons of the year is beginning! One of the most colorful. And I don't even mind knowing that the days will be shorter because Advent and Christmas are there. But let me NOT get ahead of myself!

I did like your post yesterday. Ever since my sousin Susie told me that the most often repeated phrase in the Bible is some version of "Fear Not," I've been more relaxed. (Not that I don't still worry, but I think I'm moving in the right direction!)

  11. I wish you could send some of that rain our way and I know you do too. We're needing it badly now.

Sounds like you had a nice weekend in spite of the rain. I wanted to make homemade ice cream, but everyone else nixed the idea. We already had plenty to eat and they are more weight conscious than I am.

  12. It sounds like you ended August and began September in a wonderful way (well all except the rain). It has been a long time since I had a hot fudge sundae. I used to love them on top of a gooey brownie.

  13. We had a thunderstorm and downpour earlier today, then the sun came out in all its glory! I had a low key weekend, but enjoyable just the same. My fun outing was on Saturday. xo

  15. You had a fun day and I know the grands were happy to see you stop by! We forgot to take the day off and worked around the house all day. But it feels good to finally get some projects done that have been on our list since we moved here....8 years ago! heehee! Enjoy your week! Hugs!

  16. Sounds like you had a great last weekend of summer. Good for you to embrace September and start it off with lunch, ice-cream and flea markets! I'll bet those grands had a much better day after you stopped by with all your goodies! We've had some heavy downpours here too over the last two days. I LOVE your window sill header!

  17. Sermon notes eh? Loaves and fishes? Lunch? Hmmmm. Ha! It sounds like you had a wonderful Sunday afternoon. And ice cream twice! I'd go with the hot fudge sundae too. And visiting 3 flea markets? That sounds like a perfect Sunday afternoon to me. It's been raining hard here all day too and windy and cool. I loved McIntosh Toffee as a kid but after losing fillings from chewing it I gave up and stopped buying it many many years ago. I didn't even know we could still buy it here! Lucky you. It is really good stuff. Just watch your fillings! :)

  18. Sounds delightful! I haven't had a banana split in sooooo long. Was going to get one myself tonight but Bob isn't here to share it with me. He's in training for his job for the next 12 days! Thankfully I will get to join him for the weekend. Just me and the dogs...

  19. Ohhh ice cream sounds wonderful right about now. I've eaten waayy to many things that I shouldn't have and will probably pay for it.

We're getting thunderstorms right now and have been playing in the rain all day.

Have a great week my friend!

  21. Sounds like you had a great weekend even if it was raining!

  22. Why do you and John take seperate vehicles to your Sunday service, Vee? I ahaven't had a banana split in ages--I'd like one just to ahve all the whipped cream and nuts on top:)
V and I went to a Rockies baseball game today on the spur of the moment. It was fun even through they lost, and we were surrounded by Dodger fans...lol

  23. Rainy weekend here in NH ... but that's okay. We're just back from a camping trip, so doing laundry, baking bread, making a lobster dinner to celebrate Labor day and summer's end was just our speed. Your ice cream outing has got me thinking though ... perhaps tomorrow, I'll convince SB to take me for an ice cream sundae! Hope you have a peaceful week without all the tourists!

  24. Sounds like a lovely weekend, even with the downpours, although I'm sorry the little boys were disappointed. Ice cream, flea markets, toffee, lunch with your sweetheart...what's not to like? Glad the rain didn't dampen your spirits! :D

  25. Hello there, sweet friend! I'm trying to do some visiting this evening, and just a bit of catching up on some reading. I've missed my favorite blogging buddies and dear friends - and like you say - not so much the actual blogging. I'm having a bit more time to myself at home these days what with Lisa working now. I pray that she feels this good for a long, long time. The Lord has sheltered her from some of the effects of the chemo and she truly feels good right now, just a bit tired.

Sounds like y'all had a good outing on Sunday. Guess I'll have to have a banana split soon - it's been ages since I've had one, too, so can I blame John if I get one? If he can have one, then so can I! Have a great week - sorry it rained on your grands today! Hugs ~~~

  26. You have no idea how much I had wished I could have known to send Toffee along with Judy. Anyways...
I think "lunch" on the sermon note is the sweetest thing ever! He is a keeper that man.
Terry cleaned manure out all day and came in late for dinner but he is done! Nothing like that feeling after a long hard week of work.
I... cleaned out my closet! Yee Haw!

  27. Vee, your hot fudge sundae has me licking my lips!!!

Your grands must have been "over the moon" to see you with your arms full of such wonderful goodies to keep them amused!!
A shame they couldn't get outdoors on the holiday, especially as your summer is drawing to a close.

I really loved both your Saturday and Sunday posts.
Now run along Vee and have a wonderful week!!!

  28. Hi sweet Vee!! Your Labor Day weekend sounds just wonderful and relaxing. Ours was much the same, minus the rain. I hate the grandbabies were disappointed with the weather but I'm sure the candy goodies cheered them up! It's always so very good to visit you dear friend, you always make me smile ~ hugs and love, Dawn

  29. Sounds like the perfect weekend except for the rain. I saw on the news this morning that the northeast got hit pretty hard. Stay dry.

  30. We did nothing for Labor Day, well, except for Tim. He labored helping a friend from church with some trees he had taken down, and then he went to work!

It was hot here so the rest of us hung out in the a/c and just had a restful day, ate BLT's, watermelon and then ice cream and popcorn. Yum.

    Love your background! So cute!

  31. Despite the rain it sounds as if you had a most relaxing holiday weekend despite the rain. And I know those grandbabies enjoyed your spoiling despite the disappointment of rain. We labored for Labor Day ... lots and lots of yard work before the yellow jackets decided to attack. I was satisfied with what all we accomplished before running for cover. My kiddos would be jealous of your rain.

    Have a wonderful Tuesday!!

  32. Sounds good to me! We had hot sunny weather and woke to a downpour this morning. I know this sounds funny coming from a Washington state resident but I was so happy to see the rain after only 2 days of rain this summer. Everything was so dry. I can feel Fall in the air now.

    1. No, it doesn't sound funny at all. I feel the same way about the sun. I'd be happy to see it after months of so much rain. Balance would be good!

  33. Yep, we had the line up of those leaving vacationland here too! Unfortunately, my 5 grands and parents were leaving too! Summer flies. We are getting your wet weather today, yesterday was dry, but cloudy.

But there are still plenty of summer days in September, I am not rushing Fall! It will be here soon enough!
    Have a good week!

  34. So...you had breakfast where we did? How fun to picture it...packed with tourists this time...and all eating double-yolkers!

I'm wondering...why do you take two vehicles to church? I'm sure there is a good reason you can't go together (He goes early to teach Sunday School...or you go early to make coffee...etc.). Just curious!

We laboured on Labour Day...worked our way to the top of Mt. Cheam. It was a good kind of work!

  35. Oh...and I meant to day that I love your trade...Smarties for Toffee. That is a smart trade!
