Fryeburg Fair 2013

"Go to the fair, Templeton. You will find that the conditions at a fair will surpass your wildest dreams. Buckets with sour mash sticking to them, tin cans containing particles of tuna fish, greasy paper bags stuffed with rotten..."

"That's enough!" cried Templeton. "Don't tell me anymore. I'm going."

~John sidles up to the first of many food stands~

When they pulled into the Fair Grounds, they could hear music and see the Ferris wheel turning in the sky. They could smell the dust of the race track where the sprinkling cart had moistened it; and they could smell the hamburgers frying and see balloons aloft.

"...These autumn days will shorten and grow cold. The leaves will shake loose from the trees and fall. Christmas will come, then the snows of winter...
All these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur — this lovely world, these precious days..."

~watching the oxen being escorted to the pulling ring~
(The little girl says, "Holy Smokies, those things are huge!")

Hope that you enjoyed a taste of the fair! Hope that I've shown you something new. There's always something new at the fair. Thanks for stopping by and do have the most precious of days.

*All quotes taken from Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. (Edited to Add: Did you know that the book's fair is based upon the Fryeburg Fair? It is. When I was a girl attending the fair, I may have seen Mr. White hanging out in the animal barns as he loved to do. I like that thought.)

  1. Vee, I love fairs and haven't been to one in more years than I care to think about. I hope you had as much fun as I had looking at your photos and videos. Love the alpaca. In my next life, I want to raise alpaca!

  2. Oh that was fun Vee! Love the quotes and pictures. So glad you zoomed in on the embroidery piece - it's so beautiful - the strawberry pie on a fancy hanky. Loved those oxen - wow!

  3. Love the bits from a favorite book, and the pictures are just wonderful...speak of fall, fun ... and, oh dear, a hint of Christmas coming sooner than we think! Loved the quilts!

  4. Good Morning, Vee. Your pictures are so clear, I feel like I am there! I love the quotes and it was fun to watch and hear the young girl excited about the oxen.
Hope you two enjoy your day.

  5. Now that's a fair! I haven't been to one for a while but used to love perusing the baking and preserves. Our county is hosting the international ploughing match next year which should be fun.

  6. Looks like an all around great time at the fair. I loved reading Charlotte's Web, but had no idea this was the same fair. Must go back and re-read as it's been many years.
The displays of mums, pumpkins and cornstalks are gorgeous and your photos are so good.
I'm glad you showed a close-up of that adorable quilt with the slice of pie on it.

  7. What a perfect fair; I'm in love with those alpacas! There are a few around our area, but I have to prepare for another trip next week. One day, I'm coming up to go to this one for sure, XOXO

  8. I love fairs held in the fall. I got a chuckle at the "Holy Smokies, those things are huge!" comment. She's right tho, they are huge.

  9. That looks like so much fun. Our big county wide drive and festival starts today. All the rain we needed all summer is also starting today. We decided to stay home after seeing the radar. Dangit! That little girl is right...those things are huge. Looks like you had a lot to entertain you. Glad it didn't rain.

  10. Thank you, thank you for taking me to the fair! As I read this post and soaked up the atmosphere through your lens, I longed to be there. I have not attended a fair in years (all of the fairs in our area are in summer...and you know how I feel about heat and humidity), but an autumn fair seems so delightful. And oh, the lines from Charlotte's Web...am I the only one who thinks that Charlotte is not just a children's book. E.B. White had a masterful way with words, and those you selected today are perfect.

I totally love the idea that you may have seen Mr. White at the fair when you were a girl!

  12. I adore it all! Fall fairs are the BEST! Your photos really tell the story well, and their colors are so vibrant! Whatever you are doing on the editing, keep doing it. (P.S. Photos of John eating food would be great for the food photo challenge, LOL.)

  16. Oh Vee, thanks for the treat! I love to go to the fair, any fair! Our's are always in the summer or around Labor Day out here in the Northwest. I wish we had a fall fair. I especially liked the quilt and fiber pictures.

  17. I did not know that the fair in Charlotte's Web was based on the Fryeburg Fair, what fun. My friends (sisters) used to attend the fair every year as their grandparents lived in Fryeburg. They loved it. Thanks for the pictures Vee, I felt like I was there. ~ Abby

  20. How wonderful this all looks! But Christmas trees. Already? And we don't put ours up until just before Christmas although this year Andy and I are going to my daughter Em's in Maryland for Christmas!

And Charlotte's Web. I love E.B. White's writings, fiction and non.

Looks like fun! I love the oxen - and I have to agree, they are huge! I just love Autumn with all of the familiar colors, sights, smells and sounds! I could have taken that quilt with the pie on it home with me...in a flash...and one of those cute little Alpaca babies too... :0)

  30. Love scrolling through this post of lovely photos and happy times at the fair. I really enjoyed the Charlotte's Wed quotes and did not know the relationship to Fryeburg fair. So neat!

  31. I loved going to the fair with you two! I remember when y'all went last year - has it been a YEAR already? As I recall you went toward the last of the fair days. Yes, those horses were HUGE!!! What a perfect autumn post!

PS.....the latest from Louis Dean today: he outfitted a squirrel cage with some corn on the cob hoping to catch some of the more than 2 dozen that have taken over our pecan crop. 'Mr. McGregor' was not in his garden last year and MY, oh, MY, the squirrels have moved in and are tearing up so MUCH! The novelty of this bit of news is WHERE he put the cage!!! On TOP of the house!! Go figure. Just WHAT will the neighbors say when they see a cage full of squirrels sitting up there on our roof?

    1. Omigosh...that is hilarious! Maybe he's been watching too much Duck Dynasty and is aiming to make some squirrel stew.

On the other hand, John and I are a little concerned about you... You see horses? LOL
