It's a Smorgasbord

That's right! It's either a smorgasbord or a mixed metaphor. Either way, it's a busy post so just pop in where and if you're interested. (I try never to assume that one is interested in anything around here. ☺) This probably will be about as cohesive as a bottle of faulty glue.
~~~
This is the end of the marvelous morning glories. Frost came night before last. Cutting it down came yesterday at noon...I had been hoping that it would resurrect, but at noon the truth became obvious.
That the US flag is tied in knots back there may also be some metaphor. But let's skip on, shall we?
~~~
This next series of photos all fall into the category "In the Mail."

I ordered these sweet gift tags from Sharon Chapman who blogs at
*Wildflowerhouse.* Sharon included the little lighthouse watercolor note card. Fat chance that that's getting mailed off anywhere. I'll find it a frame some fine day.

I ordered this lavender sachet made from a bridal gown at Dawn's shop. Dawn blogs at *The Feathered Nest.*

In Falling Snow was a win from Luanne who blogs at *A Bookworm's World.* Luanne is a librarian so has her finger on the pulse of the latest publications. I very much enjoy visiting her blog and, when I saw a book that sounded this interesting and which she herself gave a favorable review, I tossed my name into the cap and came up the winner. Fun! No, I haven't yet read the book — I'm saving it for falling snow.
~~~
I hope that I never forget the soccer game we watched last Sunday afternoon because I learned so much. I'm going to try to share it in a way that makes some sense without feeling compelled to connect the dots. Sometimes I think "a think" that can't be shared because I have no words.
It was a beautiful day for a soccer game!
Both of the grands are playing on the same team this year, which makes it all very convenient.
The younger throwing the ball back into the game. Delighted he was to be chosen for the task, too.
Into every game a few disappointments must fall — when it's your turn to sit out.
 ~Instructions~
If we think too much about the possibilities, we can worry and wind up chewing on something.
Ahh, yes, this is the point in the game that I really want to talk about. This is when the youngest grand, who loves being on the field so much that he literally skips about like the happiest of little boys, sat down and said, "Coach, take me out. I'm just not doing a very good job."
This is what the coach said: Get up, Jake. You're doing a very good job. Go where I tell you and don't be afraid.
Last summer, Sam (of broken leg fame) had told us that he was giving up soccer. He said that it didn't feel very good to get kicked in the ankles. I saw the possibilities and nearly felt them myself. It sure was exciting sometimes!
In the end, the team lost 3 to 1; however, that one point was scored by our boy number 10 there. I was so excited that all I captured was a blur, though I did capture this look of pure joy as he heads for his coach to receive double high fives.
~Short, Loopy, and fUn~
Ahhh...the joy of the game! I told you that he skipped about. Ha!
Do you enjoy sports? If you do, do you see the life metaphors?
A lovely Tuesday to you!
  1. I like to read 'winter' books in winter too Vee. This one sounds like a wonderful story to me. You'll have to save it for the first snowfall. I don't follow any sports except perhaps a Canada/US hockey series. I don't know the rules of engagement for soccer but your little grandsons are certainly learning. (and you are too) They look so cute in the video learning where to kick the ball. Happy Tuesday to you too!
  2. It looks like you're enjoying some fabulous mail and the wonderful fall weather! That book will be perfect for snuggling on the couch as the cold winds blow:>)
  3. A lovely smorgasbord indeed, Vee, enjoyed! We enjoy all sports around here, and now that our kids and grand kids have gone we have to enjoy seeing them via internet, not quite as much fun as being there to cheer them on. Sweet videos, sounds like your grands, have a pretty good coach, I like it when coaches encourage kids, my dh was a coach for 12 years and enjoyed every minute of it, even now when he sees the kids he coached they always remember him with fondness and tell him of how much his encouragement meant to them.
    Sorry about the morning glory, our frost is due Thursday morning, and after that will probably turn warm again for a few weeks, we have been preparing today.
    You did receive some special treasures, thanks for the links, I have bookmarked them and will visit later.
I love your blog and always interested.I don't visit as much as I want to .Duty and all that. congrats to your Grand and the best way to not fear getting your ankle kicked is to kick that ball right into the net.Take care,
  11. Oh the fun of young-uns on the field. I did catch some life metaphors. Love that first photo. I'm always impressed with other people's creativity and ideas...like using old wedding dresses to make sachets. We are still foggy here at my house. It's getting to me after several days of it. I think I should drive east until I hit some sunshine. Have a wonderful day!
  12. The grands are so cute, Vee. I am not a sports person, I don't understand any of it except for baseball, a little. The sachet is lovely. xo
  13. Love it ! I am a soccer grandma too ! All 3 of my grandson's play!
  14. Your morning glories picture is delightful. The sachet from Dawn is stunning, love that it was made from a wedding dress. Congratulations on your book win. Sweet tags, I can see why you don't want to use them. Love that both grands are on the same team, loved the little videos (except for that kicking part). One of my grands had his first year of soccer. Thanks for sharing Vee. ~ Abby
  15. Sorry that the end came for the Morning Glories. They truly lived up to their name this year!
    What a good coach Jake and Sam have. I love what he said to Jake - encouraging yet gave him a challenge.
  17. Great post, Vee. I was a soccer Mom. Our youngest son played for ELEVEN years and could have taken a soccer scholarship but chose not to-long story best left untold.
    I have a pretty green thumb but I CANNOT for the life of me grow Morning glories at this house! lol xo Diana
  18. It's so sad when you have to cut the flowers down this time of year. But knowing they'll be back next year sure helps! I love getting things in the mail that I've purchased. The anticipation is half the fun! Enjoy your new treasures! Saving the name of the book to read when it's colder. It looks really good! xo
  19. What a nice post. Lots of variety.
    Like the flag metaphor.
    Also like what the coach said to Jake!
    Me - I'm not really into sports.
  20. i really enjoy your smorgesboard posts. Gee we all have so much in common, like the bound up flag. Ours does that so often, I'm thankful husby is tall and can fix it when he gets up to stretch his legs from work at his computer. I also attended a soccer game this weekend, my nieces. This coach sounds like a keeper.
  21. Looks like an interesting book, my list is growing. We watch one of the twins (who are in their last year of high school) play volleyball and basketball as often as possible. She is a natural, and excels at any sport she tries. The other twin - the bookworm brainiac. Then there's the dancing queen, begged to do her first solo last year and did a fine job.
    The fast paced sports like the soccer above are fun, we've been there too with the sitting on the ground and looking for who knows what and having the time of your life, not necessarily involved in the game at hand.
  22. That book, 'In Falling Snow' looks like a must read kind of book. I am gonna look for it for myself.
    The soccer game was fun to read about. Those younger ones need our encouragement along the way. And, they learn so much doing sports.
  23. I always enjoy sports when it involve the g'kids or when my own children played. It's a blessing you live close and can watch the boys games!
    A tangled flag-a tangled country. Yes I could find a metaphor there. I try not to get discouraged.
    Nice purchases, Vee. And congrats on your book win. It sounds like a good one!
    Blessings-Kimberly
  24. Beautiful goodies and a lovely book. I don't know much about sports but I sure love to watch the young ones play. When I first met John, he was a little league baseball ump.
  26. Ahaaa - another soul who processes things by how they "fall into a category." Well that makes me feel better. I was just "talking" about that in a post the other day...LOL. Great minds, Vee!
  27. I love all of your sunshine mail! I'll go and look at the shop for those sachets! Love getting special things along the way...makes for a happy day and a happy life. The weather does look fabulous. How nice to get to go to the games. Enjoy your week my friend!
  28. My very favorite sports are when I'm watching my grandchildren participate. Loved the pictures of yours!
  29. That novel looks really intriguing! I seldom read fiction - not sure why because I loved it so growing up! I will probably order it on Amazon!
    It is such fun to get goodies in the mail! I would frame that little painting too--it is wonderful!
  30. Very interesting post, I loved all of it. Good things in the mail? Yes! A good book waiting to be read? Yes! Sports? Not so much. I grew up in a family of girls and that was way before schools had extracurricular activities for girls like they do now. And I enjoyed my daughter's basketball games, but not so much soccer or volleyball. But of course I was there for them.
    We have been in the 40's and so far I haven't lost anything in the garden. Amazing! :)
    XO,
    Jane
  31. This book sounds like a good one to read on a snowy winter night. Fun seeking the kids playing soccer. Brought back memories of when my youngest grands were playing soccer several years ago!
  32. Smorgasbord posts are among the best. A little of this, a little of that and at the end, satisfaction. Real mail is so much fun to receive - love those tags and the card.
    I read somewhere that books with the word "snow" in the title tend to sell very well. Odd, isn't it?
    Not much sports interest around here. But you can bet your bottom dollar that if any of the Little Misses take up sports, this Nana will be there cheering like crazy! Good for your grand - exuberance all over the place.
  33. Yes. There is absolutely a connection between sports and life. You bet. For one thing when one wins you congratulate them, just like the coach did your grandson....never mind. The flag in knots says a lot. :) We'll skip it though.. :) Thank you SO much for leaving such a sweet comment and for helping bj. She wrote me a note to let me know how to find her and I was grateful!! I hope she doesn't work too hard on this move..that was stress enough without losing control of her lovely blog!
  34. I enjoy posts like this, and seeing your soccer photos and videos makes me wish that we did live closer so that we could watch our grandchildren play their sports.
  35. I got a bit of whiplash with the different topics, but never fear, I'll recover. LOL! I got to chuckling about the flag twisted, though there was some wincing involved too. Good metaphor! And the grands having such fun out on the field. Oh, to be young again! And those sachets by Dawn are just precious. Looks like you got a bit of the shopping bug here lately! And congrats on the blog prize!
  36. We are not sports fans around here. In fact, I really dislike baseball right now as it has been preempting my beloved Jeopardy on our local channel. Boo hiss. That said, I love to watch "real" little people play soccer or T-ball or almost anything. They are so cute and I do believe they learn things that have nothing to do with sports per se...like teamwork, and tenacity, and the rewards of both. Your grands are learning all of these things!
    A lovely mail day indeed. Kind of eases the loss of those morning glories?
  37. Dear Vee, I am so glad you liked the tags and the card. your comments make me blush. Love all the things in this post. Remembering my sons soccer years and one game in particular. It started snowing, the temp kept dropping, the winds were getting so bad that we could hear trees cracking. But this stupid ref wouldn't call the game. Finally the parents had enough and we all left ( with the kids who were turning blue, I might add) only to find trees down everywhere and no power when we got home. Boiling water on the bar-b-que so we could get him in a warm bath. Now that is dedication to the game I think. LOL
  38. Thru the young lives of our 10 grands, there were years that so many were playing at the same time, and NOT on the same teams, that Granddad had to go to one game and Memaw (that would be me) headed out for another. This year, only 2 grandgirls are playing basketball and they are on the same varsity team...yay...So we have their games and the football games where another grand cheers to look forward to this winter.
    Your boys look so cute here...:)
