A Haven for Vee

How Are the Elves Doing?

It had been very much on my mind in the wee hours of the morning and not so much when I could do something about it. That is the Christmas arrangement for the cemetery. I used to say for my mother, but that's ridiculous. She's been happily living in glory for nearly three years. Time goes by so fast. Anyway, I would fret in my nighttime thoughts that it would snow and the gate would shut and I would not be able to get in. Sure enough! That's exactly what happened.

Yesterday morning found two figures walking bent into a stiff wind carrying the paraphernalia required for setting up a small spray. We were some kind of cold! I asked John later how far we had walked and he began with a mathematical equation, the likes of which I had never heard, and finally concluded that it was about a half a mile all told. I don't know. What I do know is that I should pay attention to those nighttime warnings.

We have both been quite busy. John has been working at his shop in this bitter cold, but did this drilling for my project right here at home.

There are a number of these to do. I will put names on many and Christmas phrases. This is a Pinterest idea. The method I used was to stamp the disk first and then retrace and fill in with a brown Sharpie.

Nothing is wasted...not the bittersweet from Thanksgiving nor the twig ends from the birch saplings. Now I must gather the greens and fast — a blizzard is coming! *This idea* from Rosella was so darling that I copied her!

Elf will be our weekend movie viewing. There is one scene that I compare to the fantastic DIYers out there who put me to shame. It makes me howl with laughter. I need a good howl.

Have a delightful weekend...

  1. Sometimes we do need to put an arrangement for our own mind to rest! I know I always feel better, even though I know my Mom isn't "there" I like to think she knows I still honor her memory and for me that's how I do it. Although, I have not gotten to her grave in awhile and probably will not now that winter has really set in. Somehow I think she's okay with that too, we both know our feelings!

I hope John has some sort of heater in his shop. Brad has a kerosene space heater he turns on. It does take the chill off while he's out working in his shop. Tell John I like all of his wooden treasures he's making. You are doing a great job on your decorations too! Love it all!

Stay warm in this wintry weather!

  2. Why is it that we think these kinds of things late at night? Oh my, that must have been a cold half of a mile. You had me smiling at John's calculations. :)

Enjoy Elf! We watched that last weekend. That movie is always good for some laughs!

  3. I have had a few of those night time warnings too....I just read about your big blizzard coming. Stay warm and safe! I love Elf. And to answer your question of the other day, do I ever watch the Christmas movies? That would be a great big yes...close to every night. We probably own every one ever made, lol. Enjoy your week-end Vee!

  4. I wish I lived closer to where my parents are buried. Oh I know I could call up a florist in that little town and they would do it.....but there's something about placing the flowers there yourself. My dad wouldn't have cared much if he had flowers or not - he was just that way. But I know my mother would know they were there and she had been thought of.

  5. I always think of things late at night! Arggg. Glad you got it done. I am making a spray for the front of the cottage here and I think I'll have enough for my grandmother's grave. She has been gone about seven years now - time does fly by.

I love what your doing with the birch disks and the birch sticks. It looks great! And hurray for using the bittersweet still. I love how things from nature look in arrangements. I like 'greening' the house, even though much of mine is artificial.

I'll have to try Elf again. Saw it once - I think it's just that I don't enjoy Will Farrell. My kids think it's hilarious!

Happy snow day to you and John!

  6. There they are again, those beautiful birch log candle holders! And now the discs of wood... I just love the whole thing Vee!! Glad you are warm and cozy, sounds like winter is heading your way again. Light your candles and stay warm!

  7. Love the basket of bittersweet and birch logs. It will be beautiful filled with greens. I hope you will show us a picture.
I heard that you are expecting a snowstorm there this weekend. Stay safe and warm and enjoy Elf!

  8. Vee, I am fretting about getting the grave blanket too. I have an hour and 1/2 ride out to Long Island, to boot. We are having a snowstorm right now, so far, not much accumulating but it may be sleeting as well. My car is dead anyway, so nothing to do but hunker down and finish decorating, the little bit I did. Gifts I ordered haven't arrived yet so can't wrap. Stay warm and comfy! Love the tags and the arrangement . xo

  9. We watched ELF last weekend. What a crazy movie! Don't you love the end? The end where he puts his baby in his dad's lap? That still makes me laugh. (I don't want to say more than that for anyone who hasn't seen the movie.)

You two have wonderful projects going. It's wonderful that you are making Christmas gifts. I'm sure you are buying, too, but it's always a special feeling to give something you've made.

  10. I learned a long time ago to heed those nighttime warnings.

You both are making some beautiful Christmas things.

  11. What he can do with a coffee table? Or is it the etch-a-sketch? LOVE that movie! All of your DIYs are looking fabulous. I may do a bit of copying myself. :)

  12. Oh brrr, that was quite a loving trek in the snow you made. Love your little pinterest ornaments! I had my night time inspiration about daughters birthday on the 27th of December.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  14. The Holy Spirit whispers in our ears often, doesn't He? God prepared me for a special conversation with my mother recently through a dream. Isn't it thrilling that God loves us so much HE communicates with US? This makes us want to talk to HIM more often as well!

    Love your ornament!

  15. What a sweet thing to honour your dear mom! My parents are buried in a very conservative Mennonite graveyard where decorating is frowned upon. We (my siblings and I) often break the rules and place flowers on their graves - I know mom would have loved that! Your birch log and tags are just beautiful and I was surprised at the mention of my name when showing that beautiful bittersweet arrangement. Doesn't everyone use birch in their outdoor arrangements - I copied that idea too - smile! I think of you everytime I see bittersweet - love it! I have yet to see Elf. Have a cozy weekend.

  16. Vee..we kinda' had the same discussion..we never did get up to the cemetary to take the things off the graves (my husbands grandparents and father)..unfort..it really is too late..the cemetary is closed..that's right..closed for the winter. We couldn't get in there if we tried, there is so much snow right now..talk about feeling bad..all kinds of thoughts have entered our minds. ANYWAYS.. sorry for yacking..I so love your ornaments..your John is a real catch. Blessings

  17. I like the rustic decorations you're making Vee. Our daughter who loves a rustic theme throughout her home would enjoy your crafts - especially John's votive holders.
Baton down the hatches for the snow that's coming. I was going to make shepherd's pie comfort food for dinner but hubby took us out for fish and chips for lunch. Large piece of halibut, chips and cole slaw for $11, not bad.

  19. Vee, I hope you got your greens cut before the snow started. Is it snowing there yet? I really like your green swag at your mother's grave. The birch rounds made into ornaments are adorable! That John is a clever birch tree decoration maker. Enjoy the movie tonight. Stay cozy and safe in the storm. Hugs, Pam

  24. You've been busy, I see. I love those "plaques'. It reminds me of the word burning projects of the past but I like the idea of using a Sharpie on it. Have fun and stay warm there- xo Diana

  26. You always cheer me up. So sorry you had to walk so far in the cold weather, and I love your comment about you mom. You still ask you husband questions? I checked your friends blog and now I'm following her too. You find the best blogs. Be Merry!

  27. Your walk must have been cold if it's anything like it is here! But your spray looks lovely. I like your arrangement with the birch logs and bittersweet. I followed the link you included and think I'll try that next year! Hope you stay warm and cosy during the storm! xo

  28. Elf is my favorite Christmas movie! I watched it a few weeks ago and it helped me get in the mood to decorate for Christmas.

Your wood disk ornaments are fun and I really like your basket display!

  29. Wow I love your Pinterest idea! Cool beans! And what a devoted husband you have to care for your mom's grave. Are you really having a blizzard?

    1. It ended at midday. Yes, I think we did technically have a blizzard...sustained winds or repeated gusts to 35 mph. Gosh...one must learn a lot blogging! =D

  31. Our family has never been much for decorating graves, but my aunt insisted on always placing a Christmas bit of greenery on my grandparent's crypt. There is no snow in San Diego of course, so folks go to town decorating graves for Christmas. Flashing Christmas lights, huge wreaths, recorded music, tinsel. It took some getting used to the first time I saw it. I avoid the baby grave area; otherwise I start crying at the way grieving parents attempt to bring Christmas joy to their little ones tucked away in their graves. It is obvious they have not considered that the baby now is happily seated on God the Father's knee.

  32. Dropping in for a quick hello. Love your mantle and outdoor bouquet. I feel silly now and even at the time when I bought a bunch of birch logs at T'J's and put them on my front stoop. I knew I just wouldn't have the time or resources to do my own. Love the birch with the berries <3 Looks like you have some new grandma duties. I am sure you are gonna pour all your love and creativity into that part of your life too. I will be checking back for some great ideas!!! Merry Christmas to you and John!!!

  34. Love your rustic Christmas ornaments...your pinterest inspired ones! Like I said before...I wish John lived next door. I'd add a few more birch log candle holders to his 'project list'! Your mother's grave looks beautiful in the snow. How sweet of you to do that...despite the weather. How was Elf?

  35. Dear Vee,
I just checked your weather and see you are dreadfully cold there! Stay warm dear one and I do hope the ice storm doesn't become an eventuality! I love your devotion to go put a swag on your Mother's place of rest. I am thinking that I might do the same. My Dad always did for her and now they are both there...side by side.

  36. I'm glad you weathered the storm well, Vee! I hope it warms up soon so you won't get ice.

I love your birch slice ornaments! I did a similar project with the boy scouts when I was a pack leader eons ago, although we wood burned instead of stamped them.

  38. The walk may have seemed long but the end result was satisfying I beat. John seems like such a helpful Elf, I have one of those also, so grateful and blessed. I'm just catching on to Pinterest not even sure I spelled it right but you will see my note card post today with the snowmen. I'm not sure of the rules if any but I hope I did it up right. Lovely post, Merry Christmas
