Lost:Ten Pounds of Potatoes

Oh a drop in numbers last month. Folks may still be recuperating after the holidays. I'd worry about it, but I have enough to fret over. Thanks to all who did participate and to our newcomers, too. It's always fun to meet new bloggers.

I've lost ten pounds of potatoes. I purchased them for our December 27 family dinner. That day arrived and I couldn't find them so I used odds and ends I had about the house: five or so russets mixed with a couple of pounds of red-skins and an odd nondescript white or two tossed in. They turned out fine, whipped with creamed cheese, butter, salt and pepper and plopped into the crockpot to stay warm.

Yesterday, I went sniffing through the closets once again. I figure I'll find them eventually and I don't want it to be the hard way. It is worrisome. I'd stop looking if both John and I didn't very clearly remember them coming into the house on that last marketing day. We even remember the potatoes sitting quite cheekily on the kitchen chair for a few days. Then they wandered off. Perhaps they grew bored.

Obviously, the lady of the house tucked them somewhere and now she's forgotten. I could mash thrash her.

Lost anything lately?

  1. I have lost/misplace my mother's Christmas plates. Is that even possible? They mean a lot to mean. I've asked both of my daughters. My house is not that big! I'll pray for your potatoes to come back to you, but please pray for the restoration of my dishes! Still, I'm trying not to be too attached to material things. But I feel as if I must also have lost my mind!

    1. The good news, Kristi, is that your dishes are not going to rot. I know what you mean about feeling as if the mind is slipping. Ai yi yi!

  2. Oh sorry Vee but I found this quite funny...and your right, you will FOR SURE eventually find them. And to answer your question...YES! I have misplaced soo many things in my haste I am sure to keep things neat it is truly incredible. Right now I have 5 missing candles, and a small artificial plant that I kept on the fireplace mantle...sigh. They must have gotten stored away with the Fall décor in the bringing out of the Christmas décor, when they should have been placed in the temporary holding station for regular décor to be put back out of Christmas décor was put away, lol. Did you fall that? All I know is I NEED hubby to dig out the stored Fall décor boxes and see if these things are in there. Otherwise they are gone with the wind....and I guess will have to be replaced with new...I know that threat will get him checking, lol Enjoy your day Vee, and may you find those potatoes soon!

  3. Oh I hope you find them soon Vee. The odour of decomposing potatoes can linger...
Can't say I've lost anything lately but I did mail two cards with cheques enclosed to granddaughters yesterday and forgot to put stamps on them. Perhaps this amounts to about the same thing, we're losing our minds? LOL

  4. Mmmmm, that is quite a pile to misplace! Perhaps you can borrow a hungry dog for a hour or so, LOL. I lose my sanity on a regular basis. Does that count? Honestly, I misplaced something important the other day. And now I forget what it was. But I did eventually find it. Whatever it was!

  5. LOL! Well, I thought I was the only one that misplaced things but now I know I have company! Recently I lost a half of gallon of milk! Now you tell me how you how you loose Milk???? Found............in my pantry! Have a good day! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  6. Oh my goodness haha. Here I was thinking you'd lost 10 pounds - I always equate pounds to things as five pounds of sugar or ten pounds of potatoes. Never in a zillion years did I actually consider that you had actually and truly lost a REAL sack of potatoes, hahahaha.

Well, it happens. My children lovingly refer to me as "The Stasher Queen," always placing things out of the eye's watch - tidy - yet strange things end up in strange places when one has a habit of doing that.

Well if you garden you may have the starts of a good potato crop by the time you find them. Do keep us posted! Cheers to another Stasher Queen!! Hugs.

  7. I hope you find them soon, Vee! I am always misplaying things and spend more time looking. If I could just get organized. Once when I misplaced my cell phone (I don't have a land line) I had to run over to the neighbors and have them call me!

  8. Whenever I misplace something (usually John's favorite shirt) I blame it on our imaginary maid!!! I've never had a maid, but it is nice to blame all things bad on her!
    Hope you find those potatoes...soon!
I am hoping to join the note card party next month. In Dec., I mistakenly deleted all my blog photos from last year. That's why my blog started all over again in Jan. Live and learn!!!

  9. Oh it's happening more and more...losing anything but pounds. I tucked things away to make room for Christmas decorations and am still on the hunt for a few items...where oh where?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I know where your potatoes are...
they are off with the two teacups I put away to make way for the Christmas décor and can't find anywhere now that Christmas is past. I might add they are also joining the holiday napkins I put into a cute basket to be ready for the holiday appetizer spread. Did this early to be organized... still can't find them. So much for organization. Ha.
I do hope they all surface before your potatoes begin to rot. That smell alone will lead you to their whereabouts.
Great topic today. I am greatly relieved to know that I'm not alone in this.

  11. Hmm...we have the same problem in our house. Things seem to grow legs and move on their own. It use to be funny, now, not so much. (wink & smile)--Blessings

  12. That is so frustrating and has happened to me on more than one occasion (not potatoes but other things)..

I am laughing at myself because, when I read the title to this post, I thought you were going to tell us that you had lost 10 lbs. and I started thinking how much a ten pound bag of potatoes, removed from 'my' body would look...hahaha! xo

  13. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often here. Mostly I feel as if I have lost my mind. Working on losing something else more closely attached to my personage, if you get my meaning…

Happy Day to you and John!

  14. YES!!!! My Country Diary for 2014! I REMEMBER it arriving in the mail. I REMEMBER taking it out of the box! I REMEMBER putting the mailing box on my computer tower. I REMEMBER mailing something to a blogging friend in that very box!! I CANNOT remember where I put the Diary! The only place I haven't looked is in our camper which is down on my step son's ranch. WHY it would be there I don't know! I just hope it IS! I hate losing things!!!

  15. I have an Advent calendar that I made and really like. This past Christmas, I found the calendar, but I did not find the ornaments to hang on it. They were handmade, some with vintage jewelry pieces, etc - sentimental stuff. It so irks me that I cannot locate the box they are in. Some day, perhaps. As you said to another commentator - they won't go bad while they languish in hiding. Hope you find the potatoes soon! It is funny, but frustrating.

  16. Oh Vee, you make me giggle :) I do hope you find your potatoes - how odd! Since my husband and I are in the middle of unpacking there have been a few things disappear, but I have faith they will eventually show up.

    Hugs to you, sweet lady!

  17. I hope you find them before the start rotting! I do misplace things quite often.

  18. That is funny! I'll tell you how you might find them. Start a major cleaning and dusting project where you take everything off of every shelf in every cabinet, cupboard, and closet. I did that, and found some things I'd forgotten I had. It was a BIG project, and I'm glad it's done till next year. :)

  19. Maybe you should have ended the post with....Found anything lately? Maybe you think WE took them! I do remember mentioning I made potato soup last week. Where oh where did I get ALL of the potatoes it takes to make a big pot of soup. Quit looking.....we ate them! hahahaha! (did you put them in a crisper drawer?)

  20. Lost anything?
    Yeh, like everyday!
I'd lose my marbles if I had any to begin with...
I think your nose will eventually lead you to your potatoes, Vee.

  21. LOL!! I am forever forgetting where I put things but I have never lost potatoes. I hope you find them before you begin to smell them.

  22. Oh my. I keep a list of what I'm looking for. Currently it's something important, three days ago and I can remember carrying it up to a point and the rest is --- mystery.

  23. Vee, this reminds me of a time when I forgot about some potatoes I had put in the cabinet at our cabin. We hadn't been there for a couple of months and the minute we walked in the door we notice a horrible odor that smelled like something dead. All we had to do was follow the stench which led us to the cabinet and the rotten potatoes! Oh.My.Word! One of the worst odors I've ever smelled! I'm pretty sure if you don't find them, they'll find you! Good luck!

  24. Been there! I usually store our potatoes in a basket behind the green Lazy Boy. Well, for some reason I put them in a box instead of the basket and laid something else on top of the potatoes. We kept wondering where this odor came from and it led us to the very sprouted and rotting potatoes. We had potatoes rot on a shelf in our garage one time and that odor was worse than when there was a dead mouse out there! There must be some chemistry going on but I am not sure I want to know what it is.

Loved seeing your pics in yesterday's post. Someday if I ever get my own computer again (and thus not sharing computer time), I will be able to participate! :)

  25. I was going to say at least your nose will let you know eventually … like a hard boiled egg we found one time. Regarding numbers, I looked around yesterday and over all the years of blogging I'd say they are generally down over the past few months. It might be blogging fatigue. But I think you are still in good shape because I got the most visits and comments EVER after your card party this week, which means they all came from you, so do not be disheartened. Right, you've got those spuds to account for.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh dear, Vee. Those spuds will make themselves known one day. Please let us know. You've given me a great idea for a post, as just this morning I found something I didn't know I'd lost.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lately???!!!! Daily is more like it.
Hope you find your taters. I had some rot and take the paint of the kitchen shelf they rotted upon. When I was much younger.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh Vee, isn't that frustrating? I'm sure you'll sniff out the missing potatoes before too long! xo

    ReplyDelete
  29. You'll find them eventually. Especially when they grow leaves. And yes. I manage to loose something about every day. It's frustrating!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I always wondered if spuds where up to no good. They do have eyes, you know. Now I hear they have legs?! That's it, they all go back in the ground until I can trust them again. ~:)

  31. Oh dear me ... I do hope you find them, else it won't be pleasant. But you already know that. :(

  33. well girl, just join the club!!!
I went home at lunch to check the colors in a piece of fabric that I was looking at last evening.
I still don't know if it was the green colorway OR the red??? Can fabric hide??? or walk away???...Who knows. Maybe when I find it, it will be hob-nobbing with the potatoes :^)
    Blessings to you,
    J

  34. Oh Vee - I can sooo relate to this post! Worst of all, I find myself buying doubles of things, forgetting that I had already purchased it the week before. Right now I have 3 jars of ground cloves (which I rarely even use) in my cupboard - ugh!
Your title caught my attention though - if only I could lose 10 lbs. of the other kind!

    ReplyDelete
  35. As you can see, you have lots of company! Let us know where you find them - it might be a hint for where we can find our lost items!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh Vee, you're missing potatoes that you know are in the house? I will pray your eyes find them before your nose does. I have firsthand experience finding potatoes with my nose, and it wasn't pretty. I lose things all the time, sometimes they turn up, sometimes they don't. Hey... maybe one of your kids borrowed the bag, or put it somewhere, you should check with them and your grandsons. You never know what little boys could conjure up with a 10 lb bag of potatoes. ~ Abby

  37. Funny you should mentioned that. We have lost a box of vanilla waffers. They are no where to be found and we remember them sitting on the kitchen table when we first brought them home.
Hope you find your potatoes soon. At least a box of cookies won't smell and go bad.

  38. HOW do you do it? Keep up with us straying bloggers
and continue to write brilliant, funny posts about lost
    potatoes. You're my guru.

  39. I know they grow eyes , maybe these ones grew legs and toddled off lol ! I have had this happen with things before I swear I had brought them in from the van or picked them up from the cash and I have found things in strange places that I don't ever remember putting them there , times like this I think I am going batty lol ! Hope you find your spuds and they aren't all rotten and stinky . Thanks for sharing . Have a good weekend !

  40. You are so funny, Vee. A visit here always makes me smile. I have begun reading "A Fine Romance". It's lovely ~ just like you said. I will eventually get back to blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I can't begin to tell you how often I misplace things. I will swear that someone is moving things just to toy with me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh my gosh Vee, you are hilarious. Now where did that bag of potatoes go?? Yes, you will smell them one of these days and it won't be pleasant. Now, did I lose anything lately? Hmmm. I can't remember. Maybe my memory. It seems to go missing more often than it used to.

    ReplyDelete
  43. THAT is funny, Vee. I have lost a few things in my life- but never 10# of potatoes. Eventually you will "sniff them out". It'll be the last place you would ever think to look. Well, sounds like you are having a smashingly good time looking for them anyway- xo Diana

  44. I do hope you find them soon. I haven't lost anything yet but give it time and I'm sure I will :)

  45. If I had a dollar for every item I've lost in my lifetime, I'd be a wealthy woman. Addresses, gifts I have bought, my glasses, my car keys, books, my camera case...and the list goes on. I have never my potatoes, but I have had them rot in plain sight which is even sillier.

What you haven't lost is your ability to tell a tale!

Happy potato hunting! Do let us know when (and where) you find them?

    ReplyDelete
  46. They'll most likely have those pokey little eyes that will be reaching out to you by the time you find them. Spring is coming and you may have seed potatoes ready for planting. Keep that sniffer sniffing. You didn't put them inside a box of Christmas decorations did you? Can't say I remember loosing anything lately...although someone I live with says I'm loosing 'it' at times:) Let us know where you find the 10 pounds.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh goodness, you will certainly find them at some point, there is no mistaking the smell of rotten potatoes!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I certainly hope you give us an update on the lost potato saga...as it unfolds! :)
