Yakkety~Yak

Moving right along from yesterday's post, which brought an email from a psychic/mystic. Ai yi yi. Obviously, I am not making myself clear around here.☺

Oh well. As I say of Blogdom — never a dull moment! Or the other thing I say of Blogdom—the only dull moments are when no one is posting. Here's my attempt to remedy that.

So where have I been? I was ill. That took a few days (and I'm still not back up to speed). Then both John and I celebrated birthdays: the BIG ones that enter us into a new decade. John has now arrived at what he describes as "all that God has promised." For the first time, I have found myself thinking that I may not see the next big one. Now this is always true of everyone, but I had never considered it before. It could be a good thing. Maybe. Not going to spend a lot of time dwelling on it. Just a little. Hopefully. Nothing to keep me up at night or anything. YaWn...

While no pies were made, there has been some baking going on.

That's the last piece of my cake ↑. My birthday was celebrated at my son's home where he baked a delicious lasagna and homemade rolls, my daughter-in-law made a fresh salad, and where my daughter brought this yummy cake.

In a few short days, John celebrated his birthday. I made him a strawberry cake using *this recipe* from the MGCC site.↓

It was a pretty cake, but I didn't follow directions; it goes without saying that following the directions is a good idea. In the end, John got what he really wanted for his birthday cake. ↓

That's right. Just a plain old strawberry shortcake — there is a plain old biscuit under there somewhere as he doesn't even like "special" biscuits or pound cake or angel food cake or anything else that one might use to dress it up.

~Fioré finds some shade~

Let's see, what else. Oh yes, Daylight Savings Time. I have tried to be good everywhere I have visited and not mention (in response to those who are displeased with DST) that I love it. I do. Love, love, love it. We both do here. If I could, it would always be DST, except we can't have children going to school in the dark. Anyway, I'm opening the floor. Do you love it or hate it? Feel free to share. I will not hold it against thee either way.

Anything else you'd like to know? Otherwise, I'm fresh out of scoop.

  1. I'm sorry that you have been sick, but glad to hear that you are on the mend. And belated happy birthday greetings to both of you! I have the same thoughts about whether I will see the next big milestone. And if I hurt this badly now, what will it be like then? LOL... And I like Daylight Saving Time. It's a difficult adjustment in the spring, but I love having the extra light in the evening. I would be in favor of it year round too.

  2. Sorry to hear you've been ill. Ugh.
Belated Happy Birthdays to both you and John. I've never thought about not seeing the next big birthday, but when I put the Christmas decorations away, I have, on occasion, wondered where I'd be the next Christmas.
I don't mind DST. I don't mind real time. I hate the switch, especially as I get older. And I read that it's not all that great for the body and mind, either. The switch, I mean. More car accidents occur during these next few days. I say, let's stick to one or the other and forget the switching.
I did hate getting up in the dark again this morning.
    All the cakes look yummy!

  3. Sorry to hear that you were sick! Happy belated Birthday Vee! I love the longer days...

  4. I agree with Lorrie. It's not one or the other that bothers me. It's the switching!! I did enjoy the extra hour of daylight last night...especially since it was a sunny day!

I think that the older we get, the more we contemplate the brevity of our lives. Although it's sobering, I believe that it's a good thing. It is good to ponder...and it should affect how we live!

Birthday blessings to both of you with much love!!

  5. Happy birthday to you both. Your cake looks delicious, and how nice that your son made you a lasagne dinner! I don't really mind one way or another with DST, I guess I just roll with it. But I do always get confused and turned around on the days we spring forward/fall back! whenever the whole family is together and celebrating something, sometimes I think, what if this is the last time we're all together? I've always thought that, even when I was younger. But it is just a fleeting thought, just enough to make me want to appreciate and treasure every moment we have.

  6. Glad you are on mend and that you and John were celebrated! Happy birthday to both of you (belated) but if they are big ones you know my motto is to celebrate for the whole month. I don't feel strongly one way or other on the time changes we put ourselves through except for it could cause a traffic accident when I try to set my car clock on the road when I notice it's off an hour...
    Have a good week!

  7. I have been out of the blogging loop and am just now beginning the great "catch up".
I am sorry to hear that you've been under the weather. Do hope you are feeling ALL better soon.
Belated birthday greetings to you and John! Are you celebrating the same milestone?
When my mind starts thinking of what the next decade might hold, I make a sharp turn out of that thought pattern. Don't like to go there.
How lovely to have a birthday dinner prepared by your kids. The cake is so pretty!
I'm with John on the strawberry shortcake served with a plain old biscuit. No angel food or pound cake for me either. Now you've got me hankerin' for some.
As for the time change, it doesn't really bother me one way or another... except for changing all of those clocks :).

  8. Hi Vee, Happy Belated Birthday to you and your hubby! Turning 60 is not a big deal-it sure beats the alternative. I am able to collect social security this year-yippee!!!! I'm sorry you've been sick-hopefully you will be back to perfect health soon. As for not being sure that you'll see the next big birthday-girl, you must put those thoughts out of your mind-seriously! My mom and sister died in their early 60's and it scared me to pieces but the Lord has ordained my days, so I'll let fret about it. My brother is mid-70's and dad lived to 83, so I've got a 50/50 chance of living into my 70's or 80's. Sending you big hugs today.

  10. Sorry you have been sick. The cake looks(ed) delicious! I like the way your husband approaches milestone birthdays. Maybe I should look forward to my next one….

  11. Belated Birthday greetings to you both! I am having one of those big round number ones too, in 2 weeks. Why do the ones that end in zero make us think.. oh well, I keep telling myself it's just a number. 60 is just another number. If I say it enough, maybe I'll believe it...?
Sorry you've been sick, but glad you are on the mend.
I don't really care one way or the other re. DST, but I do like the longer evenings.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Happy Birthday to you both! What fun to have birthdays close together but how nice to have 2 cakes. I'm with John on wanting a plain biscuit for strawberry shortcake! I hope you feel LOTS better now. I've missed you and hoped you were ok. I love DST....but wish they would just leave it on that time all year! lol I hope you have a sunny day today! Sweet hugs, Diane

  13. Happy belated birthday to you and John! About DST, I like it and wish they would keep it and not change back and forth. I'll be back to check out the strawberry cake recipe when I have more time. :)

  14. Happy Birthday to you and your husband! So sorry you have been ill! I hope you feel chipper soon, because Spring is almost here and I know you will want to enjoy the sunshine and birds singing:>) I love DST too, but mostly because it means Spring is finally here. I get up with the sun no matter what time the clock says.

  15. Well Vee...happy birthday wishes are being sent to both you and your husband. Glad the illness was brief and the dinner probably could not have been better! Glad ya'll enjoyed your special day!

  16. What a wonderful birthday meal at your son's, Vee. Happy Birthday to both you and your sweetie. I enjoy DST, but I wish it would stay the same year 'round. I'm hoping that you'll be feeling up to par soon, my friend.
p.s. I LOVED the words on Grief and Loss...so fitting, true and poignant. xo

  17. Happy belated Birthday to and your hubs...I will be having my decade changing one in September. I am really in denial about currently. Maybe by the time it gets here, I will have wrapped my brain around it :) Seriously...I am the baby out of eight and they are all alive and still kicking...oldest is 20 years older than me, a cancer survivor and still going strong! Mom and Dad lived into their 90's...Mom almost 98...so maybe I have inherited their good genesI I have been away since last week and am trying to catch up today and post about my weekend later on. The cake looks amazing! I also recognized my kichen chairs in your photo!

  18. Happy Happy Birthday to you and John. Hope you are feeling much better. Bummer to feel bad on a birthday. I love the idea of making lemon pie (my favorite). DST ... I don't like the dark in the early morning (when I usually walk), but that will pass soon.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love it, but most of all, I just wish they would leave it one way or the other. I LOVE the extended evening hours of light and would much prefer DST all the time.

  20. So sorry you have been ill. It's against the law to be sick on your birthday! Wishing you better health this week. As far as the time change, I ok with it, but as others have said all the clocks are a pain to change. I must tell you your poem yesterday was quite touching to me. I think it somes up exactly what I feel about loss. ♥

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm glad you are feeling better. No fun to be sick. My Mom has been sick for about a week and it makes me nervous. Happy Birthday to you both....even though I am late in wishing it to you.

I wanted to do a happy dance when the sun was still relatively high in the sky at 6 pm yesterday. Other than the mind games I play with myself about that lost hour I really do like Daylight Saving Time.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Happy Happy Belated Birthday to you Vee and John!! I'm glad you were well enough to celebrate the big ones. Hubby is celebrating 62 today. I made a cake and the kids (local ones) are coming for supper. My cake wouldn't win a prize either. A DH chocolate mix and home made butter frosting. However, when spreading the frosting I always manage to get the cake crumbs mixed up in it so it looks messy. It will taste good though I'm sure. I never have a problem eating anything chocolate. As for DST I like the extra daylight in the evening but I think we change the time way too early now. It could have held off for another 2 weeks here. The mornings are too dark and make me want to sleep in. I like getting up early most of the time. I sure hope you are on the mend soon and have a lovely week.

  23. Happy, Happy Birthdays!

I love strawberry anything! Your cake looks delicious!

I don't mind DST but his year the change is harder for some reason.

  25. Glad your feeling better and hope your top notch soon.
Happy Birthday to you and John too. : )
HATE it. I'd rather have the daylight early in the morning.
Every year I want to move to Arizona where they don't change it.

  26. Vee,
Glad to know you are on the mend. The birthday cake pictures all look delectable. Especially yours, though I might choose as John did.
The milestone birthday.....Mister is 9 years and 2 weeks older than I. So we are usually in 2 different decades. Makes me feel youthful.
"All that God has promised"......sounds like something Mister would say....he and John probably have a lot in common. That's hilarious, and your post is delightful.

  27. Happy belated birthday to you and John!

As for DST you know that I don't like it. I like daylight early in the morning. It was so dark this morning when I got up.

Your cake looks so tasty and I love the photo of your kitty.

  31. I don't like it. Here it would be ridiculous with one more hour of oppressive hot sunlight in the summertime. My mother was as happy as the sun was up so she loved the extra hour anywhere. Me? I'm different. I like clouds and overcast days. However that being said, I'm sure I would be wanting sun if I lived somewhere else but here.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Happy Birthdays, to you and John. I assume they both end in a zero? I am having an ending-in-zero birthday in August. I am thinking, and hoping, and praying, that it will be the best one yet! xo

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ah yes, the birthdays are behind us now and we're moving towards a new number. I had a 'happy birthday to me' moment in Florida when Glenn took me out for dinner and an upper molar cracked in half - right down to the root. Today, I had an implant put in and wonder if that side of my face will ever stop aching. Enough about me, glad you're feeling better and with spring around the corner, it will help bring everyone out of the winter slump.
Your cake looks delicious and so does John's strawberry shortcake, one of my favourites. Right about now I could lay down beside Kitty and have a nice nap.
DST - I love it too and by 7:30 am when I walk the dog, it's light enough to get going.

  34. I have never had much of an opinion as I've lived with the time change all my life. I did read something funny on Facebook though from a college friend who was visiting AZ and didn't know they don't change time and didn't bother to look at her phone clock so they arrived for 8 am church service an hour early.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Happy belated birthdays. Praying that you get to feeling better. I have found as I have aged, that dst has really messed with my body, I just can't seem to recover from that lost hour, although imaginary...just strange..when I was young..it was so different. Blessings

  36. Happy B'Day to both you and John. You're yummy looking cakes are making me hungry.
I can't honestly say I give DST much thought. The extra hour of sunlight is nice, for sure.
You do have me wondering about not making it to your next decade B'Day...

  42. I hope you kick this bug completely, Vee. For me, Just staying in bed reading and watching TV in between dozing off is the best remedy. And drinking a ton of Diet Pepsi.

And Happy Birthday to you and John! Milestones. I always think,
Wow! 40 (or 50 or 60) isn't so old! Christmas is weird. When I am packing up the ornaments, etc., I always say a prayer that I will be the one unpacking them next year. I'm really weird.

  45. Hello Vee and John ...Happy Belated Big Birthday to you both or as my son often says…"Congratulations on making another trip around the Sun!" I love the extra hour of evening light and at 8:15 tonight I notices that although the sky was dark the tree tops were still visible across the field against the night sky. Hope you are feeling much better very soon Vee!

I love to get up early, have coffee and read your post before everyone else in the neighborhood gets started. I can sit here and listen to them going to work and think of the years I did that and wished I could stay home. I like being a homebody! All the cake looks good to me. Happy Birthday to you youngsters. Hope you recover fully very soon from your illness and stay well. The white stuff on the ground will soon go away. I hope!

  49. Happy belated birthday to both you and John! Hope you are feeling better now. I have been ill this week and still not feeling too well.
As far as DST I have a love hate relationship with it. I love the longer evenings, but hate the dark mornings. I'm not a morning person anyway so I have a hard time getting up in the morning.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh Vee - so glad you are feeling better. We've had the sickies at our house too. I'm back at work today and feeling a lot better. Happy belated birthday to you and John - look like you had some birthday love from family and some good eats too. I don't mind the time change - it seems to give me a burst of energy and ambition! You take care now, breath in some fresh Spring air, and carry on.... (60 ain't so bad really)!

  51. I honestly do not know of any other regular ole' bloggers who gets as much comments a you do! Wow, I am amazed and just a tad bit jealous. ;)

  52. So sorry that you've been under the weather! I didn't have any trouble with birthdays until the last one. It was the one where you just can't be put into any 'young' (or even 'less than old' ) category, no matter how you stretch the definition. I hate DST. We're far enough north that we'd have late sunlight in the evenings anyway. What it means is that now it's dark when we get up in the morning. Grrr.

  53. I squeaked a few minutes in-between watching the grands and sorting things out while I am back in Massachusetts. Of course I had to stop by and say hello. Happy Birthday to you and John. I am sorry that you weren't feeling well, but glad you are on the mend. Those cakes look delicious. Spring weather is being enjoyed by all here today, but a dusting is expected tomorrow. Well, I hope that you are also enjoying a peek at Spring today.

Birthdays ....pffff...don't worry about them. As you know, I just celebrated my 76th...and i am so thankful that Mr. Sweet and I are feeling so well for our advanced age. The secret, of course, to growing old gracefully is GOOD HEALTH.

  56. Well well well...happy birthday to you both! My Dad has a tradition that he says came from England - ear pulling on your birthday. You tug on the person's ear lobes the number of years that they are. At some point we started going by ten's:)

  63. It's funny, but growing up, I never thought about the time change...it just happened. Now, my body feels it. I do like it lighter in the evening, but I hate the darkness in the morning, so I just have to go with the flow as the minute of lightness adds each day. I'm feeling my age too lately and the fact that my mother passed away at the age of 67 always looms over me...is that morbid? Oh well, like you, I don't dwell since I know all too well I have no control over when my "number is up!" Happy belated Birthday, dear friend, XOXO

  69. Well first, HAPPY BIRTHDAY(S)!!
I'm sorry that you were ill, though.

I happen to be a strawberry shortcake lover from way back so I would be pleased as punch with the cake the John got for his birthday. I did laugh about not following directions though. I also laughed at the "there is no wrong way to make a pie." Apparently, they have not eaten my pie.

As to daylight savings time, I'm in the LIKE IT group. However, I am also in the DO NOT LIKE that they have moved it up and shortened the other time so much. That ticks me off. I admit it.

Now, I need to take five minutes and go read the post that brought the email from the psychic. I got a Wiccan follower one time. For the life of me, I can't figure out why in the world a Wiccan would want to read my blog.
