A Haven for Vee

Jokes, Visits, Birdsong

Early this morning I was out listening to bird song. I can not, for the life of me, tell one from another. Yes, I hear the spring call from the chickadees... fee bee fee bee or, if you prefer, phoebe phoebe. There's the incessant rat-a-tap-tap from woodpeckers and the mourning doves are cooing.

When I hoped to learn some common calls, I added the Merlin ID app from Cornell. I'm still hopeless. So thank you to those who told me that the birdsong yesterday was cardinals or robins. I'll have to keep a sharper look-out for them, perhaps find the binoculars.

Yesterday, my sister came and took me out to lunch and then for a bit of grocery shopping. Oddly enough, she cannot find some items in her corner just thirty miles away so she stocks up while here. Anyone else having trouble finding what you want? I shop Wal*Mart for the savings, but many items go missing on me. It's an ongoing frustration.

April Fool's is not a big thing around here, but when I saw Lovella's post at Mennonite Girls Can Cook yesterday, I knew that I would give it a nod.

It didn't fool him too much.

He may have enjoyed being fooled.

Remember when people gathered around the radio? Television? Now they gather around the Kindle.

The grapes were so good! What are they doing here? Oh, this was our snack while gathered around the Kindle.

Enjoy this day!

  1. The jello in a cup was cute and judging by that impish look, it was considered fun.
I can't say we've ever gathered around an ereader (Kobo here) but definitely around an iPad many times.

  2. Our gathering spot is around my laptop. Times sure have changed. Have you heard a mockingbird before? Talk about not knowing what birds are singing. They are quite entertaining. Enjoy your day Vee.

  4. I'm sure everyone, but me, knew about frozen grapes. About 10 (maybe more) years ago, we were invited to lunch at the home of one of his peers. She was his peer; her husband was a chef and artist. He made the most delicious hamburgers ever. I can't remember what the side dish was, but dessert was frozen red and green grapes. It was a hot summer day and besides the hamburger being the best (he really didn't work at McDonalds, he was a real chef), the dessert was perfect. So simple and, yet, so memorable.

I think your little grand enjoyed the April Fool's joke. That's a darling picture.

What do we gather around? Sorry to admit it, but it's the TV. It comes on for the late afternoon shows of Pioneer Woman and whatever follows, the 1 1/2 hrs of evening news, and then remains on. We are constantly saying that we should be reading, but. . .

  5. Such a sweet face on your little grand who was "fooled"! Looks like a fun prank, which is the best kind!

I, too, find myself frustrated with the lack of variety in my local Wally World, but the prices are what keeps me coming back. Like your sister, now and then I must foray into other stores to find some specialty items.

  6. Wal-Mart is frustrating! Once I was looking for canned pumpkin. The space on the shelves was empty. A manager was passing by so I asked about the pumpkin. She told me "it wasn't pumpkin season" that's why there wasn't any! Crazy!

I try to shop local natural food stores, Costco, and then another local chain store for things like peanut butter, bagels, tortillas, etc.

Sounds like a fun day out with your sister though.

  7. I would rather grocery shop at Kroger than Walmart. Even though the Walmart here is very large and fairly new they don't have the selection Kroger does.

  8. I remember those days of family watching teaching; sadly that doesn't happen enough these days. I do the multi-store shopping too and wonder why store just can't have it all!! XOXO

  9. Cute April Fools joke. I grocery shop at our small town grocery store. They have most everything I need but I stock up on things when I'm in a bigger town.

  13. Too cute!! I'll bet the kids just loved that little trick. Don't have a kindle but my cat treats my IPad with Kindle app the same as if it were a book. Anyone who has a cat knows what I mean.

  14. The only birdsong I can identify is the red-winged blackbird. Perhaps that App would help me. I doubt it. No Kindle here, but we do gather around the laptop occasionally.
Sweet photo of your grand. I put that little trick into my mind for the future.

  15. My son called yesterday wondering where I bought some fat straws (don't know what else to call them) that make it easier to drink smoothies. He can't find them on his side of the mountains. Sounds like a fun outing with your sister. It's been a long time since me and my sister did something together...
    Have a great Wednesday!

  16. I'll tell you..our old Wallyworld in Alabama is so different then one here in NY. They carry alot of different items, nicer items. Out Walmart here (NY) is a small one, not a Super Center. But, it is nice. Thanks for the smiles today. Blessings

  17. I, too, am hopeless when naming bird calls. But, that's okay. I know a lot of other things. hehe

  18. Birds are so lovely to look at and more so to listen too, but identify no luck here! Only a few I can identify.
Your grandson's expression is priceless. Oh how I relate to gathering around the radio, for news. Hope your spring will soon be there for good, we are keeping our fingers crossed around here. Enjoy your day.

  19. Great pic of the "generations" gathered around the kindle! Yes I agree with you, it's getting harder to find things we are used to finding. Maybe they stop making some of them.

  20. Mama used to tell us about them gathering around the radio listening to find out where her brothers were fighting in WWII. My husband and I gather around to facetime our little grandboy. We love it. Especially since he is 6 or 7 depending on who's driving, away.

  21. I love hearing the birds singing, except on a weekend when our windows are open and then not so much! I will have to check out the April Fool's drink, missed that one. Enjoy your day!

  22. I love the birds too, it means spring to me, we listen to oldies on Sirrus radio, The Shadow, Johnny Dollar, such wonderful photos, great memories,

  23. Living 30+ miles from a "real" grocery store myself, I can understand why your sister does all her shopping trips at one time. We do that to save money on fuel. And I try to always stay out of WalMart! I can't take the Wal-Martians. It's a freak show in there. [shutter] ~:)

  25. Too smart to be fooled, was he? I was wishing that I had made up those fooler drinks yesterday morning...when little Lucy stopped by unexpectedly. Next year!

Of course I want to know what it was you were viewing on the Kindle! Do tell...

  26. You tried Vee, he's just too clever for you!
Tell your sis I think she sure has beautiful white hair.
Did she have as dark hair as you?
I hope mine is as lovely when it changes.

    1. She was a tow-head as a child and a blonde until it started going gray as early as 13 she tells me. She colored her hair for years and gave up about six years ago. I have been waiting for mine to go that color. Apparently, it's not going to happen.

  27. Oh how nice to have your sister stop by and take you out to lunch. : )
We do most of our shopping at Walmart too and have to go to other places to get all we want. I'd prefer going to the grocery store closer to home for everything but Walmart is a lot cheaper.
The one thing I miss here is not having the commissary!!

  28. Dear Vee, We ave notice that are Walmart is always out of so many items! And it is frustrating. So glad you got to have a nice day with your sister. I was able to talk my sister on the phone today. She is so funny, and has such an upbeat attitude. Happy Evening to you!!
