Kid's Apron and Fairy Blog Mother Tip

Last Saturday, I don't know how Kim or I ever got a thing done because we were having fun chatting back and forth via email about aprons. She had written this Apron Inspirations post and mentioned how she would test a pattern. Well that led to my testing a pattern and pretty soon, I was back in the apron business.

I have made a kid's apron before, but *the kid didn't care for it. It didn't have an adjustable neck and it was uncomfortable to take off over his head. This apron eliminates that little problem and will hopefully grow with him for a few years. This is made from half a tea towel. I modified the front to three inches on either side of the dividing line and six inches on the sides. I used the following video tutorials from the Missouri Quilt Company.

Apron Tutorial pt 1
Apron Tutorial pt 2
(Jenny showed the process for an adult apron without mentioning the changes for a kid's apron. Wrong. She mentions it on the PDF download *here.* And I was off by an inch. It should be three inches and seven inches.)

*Oh dear. "The Kid" still doesn't care for it. "Nonni, this makes me feel like a baby. I am seven!" I took a deep breath and moved on to Plan B: some other darling will wear this apron.

~~~
My fairy blog mother Linda visited over the weekend and made a suggestion that I loved once I understood what she was saying. She mentioned that my background was not covering the width of her computer. Now I had always noticed that I couldn't see the background on my iPad, but since I could see it on my PC, I didn't think I needed to try what she was recommending. Then I changed my mind deciding that if some could and some couldn't, what difference did it make if I tried to make it better. Besides, Linda makes it so easy to understand.
Anywho, Linda has an easy solution and you'll find it in her tutorials *on her sidebar.* It's called How to Make Your Background Wider. And the side bonus for me was that I can now see my background on my iPad. I like that. Don't forget to look around at the other tutorials —— they're good ones!
Thank you, Fairy Blog Mother!
Have you ever made an apron? Do you have a favorite? Why? Tell me about it. Oh, can you see your background on your iPad?
  1. Vee,
  2. I want a kid in the family so I can make a tea towel apron. The youngest kid around here just turned 22. Of course, she is so itty bitty that a tea towel might work for her.
    For her mom? I think I would need a tablecloth- to- apron tutorial.
  3. Never made an apron. But I have a couple I've purchased at Williams Sonoma when on sale. My latest one is dark grey toiley looking with birds here and there on it. I love birds so it works for me. Your kids apron is cute, even if the kid won't wear it! Have a delightful day!
  4. First of all I love the striped end tea towel and secondly, I love the aprons. They are really sweet! I'm sure some little ones will enjoy wearing them. The only apron I've ever made was in Grade 8 Home Ec class. It was blue and white gingham waist tie and had a pocket front on it. My late MIL made a lot of different aprons over the years and I have one or two saved. They certainly have some beautiful patterns and fabrics for them today. Have a wonderful day Vee!
  6. I love aprons and have some nice ones. I've never made one due to lack of skills so would always buy child sized ones at craft shows for the granddaughters. Ahem, never tried to get either grandson to wear one. :-)
    I've always seen the butterflies along the side of my blog from the iPad, and now I see your lace, well done.
  7. Good morning! Well I don't have an I-pad so I don't know how it would look, but your blog looks beautiful from my lap top. I am going to check out the spot you suggested though to see if she has other tips. I thought I was brilliant as I have been wanting my pictures a little larger and I figured out how to do it. Now what I really need is a batter camera, a better photographer, and someone who know how to edit them etc. to really have good pictures. All I really have now is HUGE blurry ones, lol. As for aprons I have made more than I could possibly count. However I have several different patterns and I just pick one. Don't ya just love the Missouri Quilt Star tutorial gal? She is soo good. Enjoy your day Vee!
    I think little boys associate aprons with the fairer sex for some reason. The ones you made are so cute, though. I bet you'll find someone who will be happy to have it, for sure.
    I'm starting my apron sewing today with the good fabric, so wish me luck!
  9. I don't sew, but I have a couple aprons that I love. One, Kathy from Kathy's Cottage made and I have a red toile one.
    I don't have and iPad. And I don't have a smart phone - lol. I am so out of touch!
  10. Well, I do sew - but straight lines, like the curtains I made.
  11. Aren't you smart! Love the apron project. I've been procrastinating with mine, but there is nothing like having a pretty new apron. My favorite is one is one my son have me after he stopped using it at the grocery store where he worked. I need a full apron. Half aprons don't work for me. I've got a few t-shirts with olive oil spatters to prove it. Struck out with the grandkid huh? That was so cute! :-)
  12. I looked on the IPAD and saw the pretty lace. On my netbook that I'm using right now, I have view zoomed so it's easier to read and I don't see the background. Hubby looked at your blog for your background on other browers and it looks good on every one. Love your cute aprons. I wear a smock apron when I'm in the kitchen and have been searching for a pattern to make a new one. (the strap across my neck bothers me on those type aprons) The vintage apron I wear....is old! lol Sweet hugs!
  13. Hi it's me again. I just watched the tutorial and I LOVE this idea. I see me making LOTS of these, lol. You could make Christmas ones (seems like everyone uses an apron then) AND I could embroider something across the top too. Thanks for sharing this tutorial Vee! soo fun!
  17. That apron is so cute!! Thanks for sharing that tutorial. I think the very first thing I ever sewed in Home Economics class was an apron - not nearly as cute as yours! I NEED a fairy blog mother.....I'm off to check out Linda's suggestion. Thanks for sharing!
  18. I cannot see your background on my iPad. I am grateful to see anything on it! lol. Never made an apron, but when I see a pretty one in HomeGoods or craft fairs, I buy it if reasonable. I rarely wear them though. :-). xo
  19. I am having a love/hate relationship with son's ipad...but I CAN see my background....
    Love the cute aprons.
  20. I forgot to tell an amazing story from my apron swap. Rhonda, who lives in Australia, exchanged aprons with Lucy Kramer from Haarlem (quilting with the past blog) in the Netherlands and they both, without plan, made almost identical aprons for each other out of red and white gingham.
  21. Oh dear, you are doing all those things I find a bit scary, like sewing and messing with my blog. I'm really impressed with your skills, Vee! I'll head over after my first cup of coffee and see Linda's tutorials...
  22. .I've made aprons and been in an apron swap on Rhonda Hetzel's Down to Earth blog. I wear aprons! I'm too messy to do otherwise! I think it may be time to make some new aprons! I just read your blog on my pc or on the emachine I use when traveling and have never had a problem seeing all the full width of the background...
  23. Vee, I would be glad to wear that adorable apron...if it would fit me! I was bigtime into the apron making business about a year ago. We had a Mother-Daughter apron themed brunch and I made door prizes...all aprons that were made from repurposed linens that I had picked up at Goodwill....bed skirts, kitchen towels, tablecloths, etc. My first couple of posts on my blog when I started were about them. We also decorated with aprons. A very sweet woman had made MANY, MANY aprons throughout the years and I borrowed them for decorations....clothes lines and clothespins held them throughout the room and tables were decorated with them. It was so much fun! I may just have to write another post about aprons, I love them so much :)
  24. The apron is adorable, but grands have their own ideas! I make aprons, usually for others. My own are getting raggedy and stained - time to remedy that.
    I really should spend some time on Linda's blog. My blog is rarely changed, as you know! Your lace background is so pretty. Why is an IPad so different in format? (for blogging, I mean)
  25. Decided to visit you before getting on the elliptical so will be back to visit later and look at those tutorial ~ both apron and computer. I love making aprons so I just might try this one, too. I have a little granddaughter who just might wear it. I do see the difference in your background. Looks nice!
  26. I'm finishing an apron today that I made by using grandma's old worn out one as a pattern. Your border looks great and I'll be checking out her other tips.
  27. I made an apron in something like Girl Scouts. It was for our moms....It was 3 hanky's and wide gross grain ribbon. I still remember it. It was way to small for my mom.....you sewed the hanky's on by the point. So I can officially say, I made an apron. Oh, I made one for my daughter when she was little. I gave it to her for her daughter. It probably went to Goodwill!!!
  28. I really need to visit your fairy blog mother. I am hopeless when it comes to any design elements on my blog.
    Hopeless and too busy.
    Make "The Kid" an apron with cool boy stuff on it. Maybe then he will wear it.
  29. That is the perfect apron. Maybe a big tea towel for mommy sized. LOL. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
  30. I made quite a few aprons when my children were small in fact I sewed a lot. All a thing of the past now. I really like your apron idea, very neat!
  31. I've made a lot of aprons the Church Ladies pattern, I'm finding that I can't wear the kind that is around the neck anymore so I ripped out a vintage apron that I had that was in very bad shape and I've made a pattern from it. I hope it works out, I'm still working on it tho.
  32. Yes I have made an apron or two in my day. My favorite one is the very first one I made as a child. My Aunt Katie is a quilter and she had some leftover pink and white gingham fabric from one of her quilt projects. The summer I was 6 she patiently showed me how to cut and sew a simple tie apron with a little square pocket on the front. Sewing on a full sized sewing machine was a thrill for me. I still have the apron and want to pass it down, problem is I currently have 2 granddaughters and only one apron.
  33. I adore aprons and have long wanted to make one for myself. I'll be downloading the pattern to try at a later date when I'm not so busy. The ones you have pictured are adorable.
    I read Linda's tutorial, but the instructions don't work via the Blogger template, which is what I use now instead of the html link to a manufactured background. I still don't see your lace on the my iPad, but it looks delightfully beautiful here. Linda has a great point about many of the backgrounds being too small for the larger computer screens. Your background always looked dinky on my big iMac screen. The current layout fits nicely now.
  34. Nope Vee, I've never made an apron. I like to collect them though. Pretty vintage ones and some from Anthropology and I also try to wear them when I'm cooking and cleaning.
  35. I have made aprons and I was just noticing that the ones I use all the time are getting pretty faded and stained. It might be time to make some fresh ones:>)
  36. I suspect there will be a run on tea towels ! Great tutorial by Missouri Star and fun easy project! Kudos for bringing it to us, Vee!
  37. What a cute idea! I'm not very good at sewing but maybe sometime I'll try this. I don't have a fairly blog mother but thanks for including the link to yours :)
  38. The only apron I've ever made was in Home Ec in school when I was in the 7th grade. That was many years ago and I don't really remember it anymore. I made it for my mother and she threw it away not long after.
  39. Vee, I love aprons, but I've never made one. I have several, plain and fancy, but none can compete with my very first apron. It was made for me by my grandmother when I was not more than seven, and I still have it!
  40. I don't have an iPad, so I don't know. Can you see my background on the iPad?
    I've made lots of aprons, some without a pattern. I need to make some new ones, ours are looking a bit shabby. I'll have to check out the tutorial.
  41. Hi Vee, Aprons are so cute. I have never made one. I am not much of a seamstress.
    Thanks for the shout out on Blogger backgrounds. I appreciate it. I was out all day, getting a pet scan, doctor stuff.
  42. Thank you for the link to your fairy blog mother -- she has some good info, but will wait til tomorrow when I'm not too tired to figure it out. I've been wondering how to back up my blog, so I'm grateful for the info.
  43. I can see your background on the pas but it's much smaller. Guess that happened when you widened it. I have a patten I've used in the past to make a simple apron but we have done ones with tea towels too.
  44. Your little apron is adorable Vee! If only I could sew ... LOL! Your background is very pretty and I'm glad you were able to fix it.
  45. I'm going to try this. Bought some tea towels, thanks Vee.
