Around the House

Behind the house there's a car parked on the deck railing,

and these fellows to the left of the tree...

I nearly mowed them down, but decided to get the Round-Up with those leaves of three.

Good thing I took a closer look because it was a couple of Jack-in-the-Pulpits! I haven't seen them in years.

There's Jack!

On the right side of the back yard is the luge and my cull pile. When anything healthy must be removed, I toss it over the banking. Now I have a nice little garden of daylilies and columbine on the corner of the forest.

But what is that little red bug? I hope it is not the dreaded lily beetle.

On one side of the house, my blue hosta came up. I was worried for a while.

On the other, my neighbors' lilac bush and my rhubarb patch.

The front yard is lacking color these days since the azalea shed her gown of pink. At least, there's a violet or two and a sprig of lily of the valley here and there, though I do plan to use Round-Up on that, too. (I put a box over the top of it and squirt them so the other plants are not touched. I will never ruin my health again trying to dig them out. It's impossible! And they can not be allowed to take over once more.) Some day, they'll have their own patch far away.

And, in the house, some yummy bread sticks. I've featured them before and you can find the recipe *here.*

  1. I'd be hard pressed to decide whether to be in or out at your place today. Perhaps the best solution would be to snag a bread stick and enjoy it out on your lovely deck.
The jack in the pulpit brought back memories of walking through the backyard as a child while my mom introduced me to each flower growing in her garden. "Jack" was there and I'm not sure I've seen him since. What a delightful surprise to find in your garden.
Your rhubarb plant is fabulous! They don't do that well here with the heat. I have a few stalks left from the farmer's market that I am planning to use up tonight. What will you be doing with yours?

    1. That is where John built the luge for the boys last winter. It looks so very different now.

  3. Good morning! Well I sure enjoyed my stroll around your house! The lilac bush is just gorgeous, but those bread sticks? oh my goodness....good thing I can't eat them or I'd have a hard time controlling myself that's for sure. Enjoy your week-end Vee!

  6. I enjoyed the tour. Prettiness all around. Nice to see a Jack in the Pulpit. Have a nice weekend!

  7. Beautiful photos Vee! I hate to tell you but that red bug does look like the lily beetle to me. They are not "round" like ladybugs, but more elongated. A reddish orange with black feelers. Keep an eye out and destroy them please!! They are ruining gardens everywhere, and not just lilies!

  8. I enjoyed the tour of your pretty yard, Vee. I would enjoy your view for sure. The breadsticks are making me hungry!! xo
p.s. I enjoyed reading the answers to the questions. Fun stuff!!

  9. Thanks for the tour. I would love to take an actual tour with you and then come in and have one of those delicious looking bread sticks!

  10. I have not seen a Jack in the Pulpit for years. They use to grow wild in the woods around our house. The cheese bread looks yummy.

  11. It's nice to see around your property and what you have growing. It looks very lush and green Vee. I hope that beetle isn't the bad kind. How does one know what's good and what's bad for the garden!! There are so many bugs. The breadsticks look wonderful. Enjoy the weekend.

  12. Thank you for my armchair tour! It's always fun to see little bits of friends' surroundings.
How fun to have a culling area that has produced beauty in a forgotten corner. I also love the little car on the deck railing...a sign of life and love.

  13. Love the car on the deck railing! A common sight here, too!

That Jack in the Pulpit is gorgeous!

Those breadsticks look amazing! I am going to make some in my new oven! Yum!

  14. One thought on what heaven must have: favorite flowers that are always in bloom. Seeing azalea flowers wither away or tulips, daffodils, crocus etc etc make planning for constant garden color more urgent to me. Right now in my garden the oriental poppies, peony and iris are providing color boldly. Do you have those in your garden? When do they bloom for you?

    1. Everything is several weeks behind. The irises and peonies should be much further along, but probably have a few more weeks to go. It's been a most foul spring.

  15. What a wonderful spring at your home ~ daylilies and other flowers that will surprise you with blooms of (as yet) unknown color! Oh, and the jack-in-the-pulpit that's been hiding for a while has returned. Hostas always seem to be among the last to come up. Those bread sticks look so yummy that I want to go right down to the kitchen and make a batch. That will have to wait, though, as I want to mow before it rains.

I love, love the deck and the gray color stands out with all the green around it.

  17. You have a beautiful yard! So green and vibrant, I love this time of year. My lilacs have bloomed as well, I must get some cut and bring them into the house before they are finished!!

  18. Wow, you are so lucky to have Jack-in-the-pulpit! I would love some of those to be growing in our woods. We have all the same things growing, lilacs are blooming, we have already cut the rhubarb, violets are everywhere. Isn't spring beautiful? I want those breadsticks in the worst way, but I am low carbing. Drat.

  20. I had to use some round-up this year too...it seems poison ivy has found its way into the yard.

  21. Everything is so pretty and green...all the more exciting when it seems like you'll never see it again after a long hard winter, I'm sure. Your pic of the neighbors lilacs is BREATHTAKING! I can't see rhubarb without remembering the yummy strawberry-rhubarb cobbler my mom used to make. And those bread stick look amazing. Thanks for the tour!

  22. Things are looking good and fresh and healthy around your place. I'm sure it's a wonderful change from all that white stuff! I suppose I should join the MGCC girls and many bloggy friends and try to grow my own rhubarb. Maybe next year...
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  26. I am so glad that nasty winter is over. The lilacs smell so sweet!
Might those happen to be the low calorie type bread sticks?? I'm thinking NOT.

  27. There are such wonderful treasures to be found all around your house. All are lovely, but I like the little toy car on the porch rail best.

  29. Hi Vee!

Oh I just love your forest! I have never heard of Jack in the Pulpits, they are beautiful! I think it's very interesting, the things we find when walking around the yard . . . some things not so interesting too! Your yard it beautiful! I especially love to see that children love your yard too!

Your lovely yard is way ahead of what we have here.
I like your idea for spot spraying, I'll have to remember that!

  32. I didn't recognize y'alls yard without the snow. Nice place. The flowers look lovely. I prefer heavily forested areas too. I always feel closer to God when I'm in nature (not to be confused with au naturale). *giggle* ~:)

  33. Beautiful yard. So peaceful looking. I would love to spend a few hours there wandering and looking at things.

  36. Oh what a nice walk around your yard. Pretty and interesting yard.
I just realized today that I have 4 lilac bushes in my yard!!! Just didn't realize what they were. There are just a few blooms on them now. Maybe next year they will bloom better.
I'm a big fan of bread sticks. They look delicious. Thanks for the birthday wishes and your kind words. : )

  37. Oh, my dear!!! I simply LOVED my visit with you! Everything is so pretty and sweet! Next time I wouldn't mind having a cup of tea and perhaps a little chat together! With John and Louis Dean if possible!!

  38. Vee- I LOVED the walkabout here. What fun to see everything---well, except for the Poison ivy-that is NEVER fun! Look at those lilacs! I just LOVE them. xo Diana

  39. Beautiful lilacs! We were just discussing Jack and here. I like how the truck is parked between the rocks.

  40. Our gardening guru Mark Cullen says we're about 10 days behind where we should be. How exciting to find a Jack-in-the-pulpit; is a cull pile like a compost pile except if you live you're a lucky plant? :-)
Nice to see around your garden as well, and that sure is a lily beetle - show the boys how much fun it is to squish them between your thumb and fingers.

  41. I quite enjoyed my spring tour around your yard. And as I toured...I compared notes with those I took on my tour last summer. It's all looking lush and fresh over there!

I wouldn't mind munching on a cheese bread stick right about now. Looks yummy!

  42. OH those leaves are so pretty. I'd love to take a walk around your yard and then come in to enjoy some of that bread and have a visit:)
BTW....glad you put my repurposed roaster on pinterest. Anytime!:)

  43. I am so glad you noticed the little Jack-In-The-Pulpit ! Your cull pile sounds like ours...lots of very healthy plants like Columbine, ferns, and so many others that don't play well with others in our flower beds but do fine and dandy in the outskirts of our gardens between them and the forest. And they look so lovely there.

Oh the bread looks so yummy...I think I NEED to bake some .

  44. I became very poor in my visits to you :(. Great to see your back yard tour :) My little one keeps his cars parked the same way wherever he liked :)

  45. Hi Vee! Your yard looks lush and beautiful, and those breadsticks, yum! Went on a little day trip today and took lots of photos. With the iPad! Could that bug be a lady bug with no spots! xo

  46. I was really enjoying admiring your lush green yard (and thumb - I just killed a gerbera daisy a kind lady gave to me) when I saw your breadsticks and got distracted by wishing I was eating a hot from the oven one right now:)

  47. I'd like to wander around your yard munching on one of those breadsticks. It all looks so pretty. I don't know if I've ever seen a jack-in-the-pulpit, but I'll be on the lookout.
I'd love to toss my too-orange poppy plant out your way. And you could throw back some of those pretty violets.

  48. Your pictures are wonderful Vee - I've been away from the computer and am just catching up on all the posts I've missed. I must have a look at your delicious bread recipe!!!

  49. Oh Vee, I find your yard just enchanting! I smiled at your cull area since I have one at the back of our property as well with daylilies and other things that were given one last chance.

  50. Your yard and home are so charming! I need to work in my little front garden because it is so overgrown with perennials that I'm not sure what to do with! I hate to just toss them out, but the mint is taking over and the monkey grass that I regret ever planting!

  51. I love your yard and I had to chuckle at the car, after the grands leave I am always finding little treasure left in the most unusual places. I had worried about my hostas coming up so late, but they are doing great now.

  52. Hi Vee, Your property is lovely. I adore woods! Your Jack in the pulpits are lovely. I have one and am hoping it will spread. The lilacs are pretty. Ours are long gone. It's gotten hot here over the last couple of weeks. Almost like going directly from winter to summer, skipping spring. Enjoy your day!

  53. Love the car parked on the deck!

I'm hoping that there are all kinds of toys laying everywhere next week:)
