A Slight Delay

It appears that the 4th may happen on the 6th. Weather doesn't always cooperate, does it? Will it cooperate in your corner? Does your family go ahead with plans no matter what or do you make adjustments? I notice that many communities have already switched fireworks to either tonight or later in the weekend.

I should be apologizing for all the sameness around here, but the Boleros really are putting on the best show.

See what I mean? These are Asiatic lilies, the ones lily beetles really like. I've read that lily beetles don't like daylilies, but I've also been told, by those who would know, that lily beetles will eat anything.

The texture and color are perfection to me...

Don't get too close to them, though, or you'll look pretty messy. It was all over my pants and camera and shirt.

The culprits...I was going to look up the bits and pieces of an Asiatic lily, but never got round to it. I will today perhaps.

ETA:

(Oh dear...so much "anatomy" first thing in the morning. Well, anyway, it appears the stamen is responsible, specifically the anther.)

Let's cool it down for those who find such vivid colors jarring. I know you're out there! That tree fell while I was mowing the lawn a couple of weeks back. Very scary. It does make for a nice diagonal in a photograph, though.

Well that's it for today...the pace is slowing as the U.S. prepares for the 4th, 5th, 6th and the East Coast prepares for Arthur. Always something!

Wishing you safety and a good holiday.

  1. You don't need fireworks -- you have Boleros! Gorgeous. I'll watch the fireworks from downtown on TV and call it a night.

  2. I love the Boleros! We tend to stay close to home on holidays. Perhaps some neighbors will entertain us with fireworks! Hope you have a safe and happy weekend.

  3. I'll have to try to remember the name Bolero. I'm picturing two Russian figure skaters...okay, got it. ANYway, those are just gorgeous! I could use a little Bolero touch to my flower garden, minus the beetles. And the wooded photo is also beautiful. That diagonal would be a nice size diameter for firewood. It's sunny and in the low 70s here today, I think. Fireworks as usual, on the Fourth. On the other hand, with the kids out of the house, going to the fireworks doesn't have the same appeal. I think we'll watch a movie - and probably hear the neighbors shooting off fireworks til all hours of the night. Enjoy your weekend! I hope Arthur doesn't bring too much grief.

  4. I heard Arthur was going to mess up plans for the 4th along the east coast. I'll be watching fireworks on TV this year, but have big plans for the rest of the weekend.
Your Boleros are gorgeous! What a beautiful color! My Asiatic lilies haven't bloomed yet but it won't be long.
Have a great weekend and a Happy 4th!

  5. I always clip off the anthers, that pollen can really mess up clothing and furniture if you're bring the lilies inside.
Up in the steamy 90's here and Arthur will bring storms here later today before heading your way - stay safe. Fireworks are fun on any date.

    Hugs and a happy 4th - Mary

  6. Stay safe from Arthur! It is going by the NC coast today, but I live on the total opposite side of the state so we are having sunny skies.

  7. Vee, Your table center piece is similar to mine,.LOL. I love your lilies, such a pretty color. I bet you jumped when that tree fell. My daughter lost a tree this week, on a storm day. No damage thankfully. Blessings for a great 4th. xoxo,Susie

  10. Your lilies are just gorgeous! Your photos are so wonderful Vee! I really need to learn more on how to get those crisp and vibrant pictures. Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend and stay safe. We'll be watching Arthur's progress and thinking of you.

  11. Our neighbors are having their annual fireworks extravaganza on the 5th ... and the weatherman says southern New Hampshire will be cleared out by then ... the family party on the 4th goes on rain or shine ... the biggest and best potluck picnic of the year! My contribution this year is mixed berry pie and shrimp/corn chowder and biscuits - right out of Martha Stewart's latest mag ... I'm on a Martha jag these days. Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend, Vee! You're such a bright spot in my blogging world these days! You and your Boleros and you attitude toward life!

  12. Vee, your yard is what we dream of and have to take our RV away to find the beautiful surroundings you have in your own backyard. Our 4th is spent in just such a place to find a quiet place for us and our little Shiraz who is horribly frightened by fireworks. We, unfortunately, had to treat her to an expensive visit to the vet just to learn that she's well but so nervous already that she had signs of severe illness.

  13. The boleros are really lovely! I know I've said it before but the colour is just so vibrant! I love your yard too. I hope your celebrations are wonderful whether you celebrate on the 4th, 5th or 6th! Fireworks are always enjoyable. xo

  14. Weather is always find for the 4th here. However, fire is so prevalent that most fireworks are banned. Especially those up into the mountain areas. Arizona used to have a ban on fireworks and I just loved that because people are so crazy about lighting up on that day and it really is a dangerous thing. Kids getting their hands blown off and that sort of thing. So people living here would go to Mexico and buy fireworks for a minor fee and then smuggle them across the border to bring them back. Some got caught. My thought was that adults should really act as adults sometimes in their lives.

  15. The heat and the storms that came with the cold front have already passed here and we are experiencing a few gorgeous days. The heat is to return next week. After all, it is July... sigh.

But our 4th of July celebration at our house was moved to the 5th only because of logistics. My son texted late a couple nights ago asking if we could move it and it was fine with us. Friday is to have a high of 76-ish and Saturday 80-ish but as long as the humidity is low, wonderful weather. Usually the 4th here is "stinkin' hot".

  16. It looks like the weather will be nice here for the 4th, but we don't have any big plans except household projects, (I will be cleaning out the shed while Earl wires it for electricity). Woo hoo. Your lilies are so gorgeous, I love that deep coral color and they kind of shimmer don't they? Have a great weekend Vee!

  17. No apologies needed for sharing your beautiful boleros! I have no such thing in my yard, so I can enjoy yours vicariously!

Our 4th of July plans are, always tentative. Not only the rain, but high temps can keep me indoors, so we usually wait until the last minute to decide whether to attend the big family reunion for Ron's family. I am in favor of moving July 4th to sometime in September or October. ;)

  18. Your lilies are so striking and vivid! I AM going to buy the bulbs? or are they tubers?
I'm sure you'll enjoy the 4th whenever you can celebrate it, just being with your family is what makes it fun!
    I miss mine so much...

  19. Love the wishing well and the flowers. Tarnished silver is a favorite of mine. With the pitcher and Old Glory, it is truly a great centerpiece.

I'm not going to be with the kids so it will be a day of whatever. Will watch the Braves and the fireworks on TV.

  20. Beautiful Lilies: I just returned from visiting my sister and she had taken me to a farm that is known for it's lilies. I think the rain will bypass us here, but hit the Outer Banks pretty hard. In fact, they're calling for evacuation:-( Happy 4th (or 5th or 6th!) XOXO

  21. What gorgeous lilies! Here in ne Ohio we are finally having some cooler weather and no rain predicted for the fourth.......When I buy Easter lilies for the house I cut off the stamens so they don't stain everything. But that's not a reasonable idea for your boleros and besides, they look best as they are......Love the green relief at the end.

  22. Love your lilies. Now I haven't had a tree fall while mowing...yet. That would be scary! Our daughter and her hubby got out of dodge before that storm decided to roll through. They'll go back to dodge at the end of the weekend. Celebrating on the 4th is always dicey with the weather. Have a great weekend whenever you end up celebrating!!

  23. Thanks for the anatomy lesson Vee. I always get the name of those parts mixed up. And I probably won't remember them either. The lilies are really gorgeous. What a bright pop of colour in your garden. It's too bad that Arthur is arriving on the 4th and 5th. It will be a mess here too. Still hot today. Not complaining. Saturday will feel like fall again. :( Have a safe and happy holiday. I do hope you get to celebrate one way (day) or another. xo

  24. Your lilies are stunning! I haven't heard what's going on in OOB yet - haven't checked! LOL!!! Happy 4th of July to you too!!!

  25. Hi Vee...I saw this info on the news late last night. I hope everything is ok for all my friends up and down the east coast. We don't have this problem on my west coast. You pictures are just stunning. Nice to visit you again.Happy 4th!

  26. Wow...you are right, those lilies are stunning! Thanks for including the botany lesson too...I guess it's botany...right? Wrong? Oh well, hope you don't have much bad waether due to arthur....none here...it is supposed be glorious here after our nasty humidity leaves us this evening! Happy 4th!

  27. I haven't personally tried this, but I just read recently that 1 part vinegar to 1/4 part chili powder mixed together and sprayed on about anything will repel insects. Also, some say mixing Dawn detergent in water does the same thing. Your lilies are truly gorgeous!

I think the weather is supposed to cooperate for the 4th here. You never know in MO. Have fun whatever day you celebrate!

  28. Your lilies are really stunning! I love that color. I think we have a slight chance of rain today but none in the forecast for the next 4 days. So no cancelled or delayed holiday plans here.

  29. Your lilies are prettier than any fireworks I've ever seen! We'll be busy working on Eric's house, but hope to go see some fireworks later in the evening.

  30. I'm behind times as I haven't heard about the impending storm. Stay safe and dry. Your lilies are gorgeous, especially against that fence. The color just pops! I do love the cooler shades but I can certainly appreciate the hot ones. Gorgeous lilies! I won't tire of seeing more of them. Thanks, too, for the anatomy lesson. Will there be a test?

  31. Oh there are those GORGEOUS Lilies again that bring out the green eyed monster in me. I love them!! And your lesson and diagram on their anatomy was very interesting! Everything is soo green and pretty by you. I am so glad you share it with us! I have kept my nose so buried in my sewing machine I didn't read about Arthur's coming until this morning! Everything here should be gorgeous for tomorrow. About 85 and sunny. Doesn't get much better. Stay safe Vee, and enjoy your celebration whenever it come!

  32. I am a weather geek and I watch the Weather Channel all the time when there's a storm approaching....anywhere. I've got my eyes on Arthur although it is beautiful here in Arkansas and only 72, perfect. I am a homebody so I will splurge and have hotdogs and chips and baked beans and a nice dessert for the 4th and maybe go out in the yard and watch the fireworks or not. I have 2 grand babies who have birthdays on the 5th and the 6th so I was busy getting everything wrapped and packed up to get in the mail on time and now I'm making pickles and will probable mow tomorrow. I'm not sure where you're located but stay safe and Happy 4th!

  33. Arthur missed us in SE Georgia. The Carolina's get to have all the fun. :) Seriously, I wish it would dump some rain on us.
The flowers are stunning. Can't blame anyone for wanting to stare at those for hours. Well worth the time to look. Thanks for sharing. ~:)

  34. We are plunging a head with our celebration. Tomorrow with be cloudy in the am then sunny with a high of 83 degrees. Should be just right for grilling and enjoying fireworks!

    Happy Independence Day!

  36. Those are just gorgeous!!! Our 4th celebration is going to be on the 5th, our town never seems to do it on the 4th, and I'm not sure why :)

  37. The Lilly's are beautiful I love seeing them. Much of the outdoor activity has been cancelled here because of the weather although a few places a little inland are still *planning* to have fireworks tomorrow night, we shall see. Looks like it might be a movie day for us. We have rescheduled our grilling for Saturday

  38. Your clump of lilies is gorgeous Vee. It was in the high 80's when I got home and today, a modest 62F which of course is perfect for gardening.
Wishing you a happy 4th celebration whichever day it happens.

  39. Wow Vee, your floral display is something to behold!!! (I tried to spell out the name, but my iPad kept changing it to a lady's name!!).
I checked out your pretty lampshade, too, in your previous post, and it turned out so lovely. Yes, she certainly deserves a rose! Happy 4th, whenever it happens in your neck of the woods! Ours will happen tomorrow.

  40. The display of flowers really are beautiful!!
Nice weather tomorrow here for us. In the 70's with low humidity. Ideal.
Fireworks tomorrow in the evening too. Should be a fun day. : )
I should have type JULY not MAY for Ken's test. Silly me!

  41. Those lilies are gorgeous and deserve more than one mention/showing, so no need to apologize for showing them again! Yes the pollen from the anthers stains whatever it gets on- fingers, clothes, tablecloths..ask me how I know. I too cut off the anthers before bringing lilies in for a bouquet...
I hope Arthur isn't too harsh for us...let's hope he weakens considerably before he reaches you and I. We have certainly changed our weekend plans.. thanks Arthur!

  42. Those flowers are sooo pretty.
Rain or shine, all my family is gathering here for swimming, barbeque, hot dogs and fireworks (well, fireworks and swimming might NOT happen if it rains)...not in the forecast. We had rain today.
Have a good celebration on whatever day works for ya'll. :)

  43. Oh gosh- LOVELY flowers! No parties here...but it's a gorgeous day and I'm thankful for the rain so maybe no one will set the woods on fire! Have a happy and safe 4th!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I just checked out the weather in your area...'tropical storm conditions. 100% chance of rain. 18°C'. Hope Arthur isn't putting too much of a damper on the 4th celebrations!
