Friends

I awoke this morning with devout thanksgiving for my friends, the old and the new. I am not so ungrateful as not to see the wise, the lovely, and the noble-minded ... as they pass my gate.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

  1. What cheerful flowers. I am not so sure that many of the wise, the lovely, and the noble-minded pass my gate, (Emerson has some very special neighbors) but I certainly find them online. I seek them out.

    1. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously - no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. ~C.S. Lewis

  2. An enchanting quote to read on this dreary morning. One thing I've found is if you're not a 'people person' socially as I am, it's easier to make friends through a blog. I hope this makes sense in that a written relationship gives one a more relaxed opportunity for conversation and response.

  3. Such a beautiful quote Vee along with your beautiful flowers...and oh so true...and I too...open my eyes every morning and I am so thankful for the friends that I have...old ones and new ones, near and far ones. Our friends no matter where they are should be treasured. Every one of them is a blessing in our lives. A great way to start the day...being thankful for those special people in our lives. 11. While we are on the subject of quotes, my brother posted this one on Facebook and I think you might appreciate it, too.
On Being Human - A quote by Albert Schweitzer
From a feeling of embarrassment, we hesitate to approach a stranger. The fear of being repulsed is the curse of a great deal of coldness in the world; when we seem indifferent we are often merely timid. The adventurous soul must break that barrier, resolving in advance not to mind a rebuff. If we dare with wisdom, always maintaining a certain reserve in our approach, we find that when we open ourselves we open doors to others.
Especially in great cities do the doors of the heart need to be opened. Love is always lonely in crowds. Country and village people know each other and realize some mutual dependence, but the inhabitants of cities are strangers who pass without salute---so isolated, so separate, often so lost and despairing. What a stupendous opportunity is waiting there for men and women who are willing to be simply human!
Begin anywhere---in office, factory, subway. There may have been smiles across a streetcar aisle that stayed the purpose of a suicide. Often a friendly glance is like a single ray of sunshine, piercing a darkness we ourselves may not dream is there.

  16. Lovely to hear from you Vee, and I have had quite a journey these last few months, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer last October and have completed chemo, surgery and more chemo, but I am still here, six weeks after chemo finished and learning my new normal living with no stomach. Thank you for leaving your lovely comment, indeed that's the grandchildren, time sure flies. Being grateful as your post suggests is an everyday requirement. Big hugs, love Margie ❤️
