Hodge Podge Wednesday

1. "Summer is like childhood. It's full of warm memories and gone too soon."~Kellie Elmore
Agree or disagree? Share something you loved about the summers of your childhood.

Whether I agree or disagree depends entirely upon the summer. This year, I think I'll be agreeing.

source

The thing I loved about summers of my childhood was the freedom, not only from school, but also from the constraints of
home. We had the freedom to roam the woods and have adventures. (Yes, there was even a stream.) It was a different time and my parents were not overly
concerned if we didn't arrive home for lunch. Supper was different; we'd better be home for supper!

2. Are you a fan of auto racing-NASCAR, Indy, Stock, Grand Prix, etc?

No I am not a fan. I don't dislike it; I just don't have an opinion about it either way. Sometimes I watch because someone else in the house does have an opinion.

Ever been to a race in person?

Yes, my hometown is next door to a race track that has hosted many events, including rock concerts. I used to attend
stock car races as a teen when my mother worked the concession stands.

Any desire to do this?

Not one

Do you know a lot about cars?

Almost nothing

Do you notice particular makes and models when you're out and about?

No, the only thing I notice is that when
a friend or family member gets a new car, suddenly, I see that model all over the place.

3. What's something you think is too serious to be joked about?

There are many things too serious to be joked about —
the death of innocents comes to mind.
Or do you think anything and everything is fair game?

No, not everything. That said, I'm not a PC kind of gal and I can find humor in many things that others might find offensive.

4. July 29th is National Lasagna Day. Are you a fan?

Yes.

Do you have a great recipe, and if so where did it come
from?

I do have a great recipe and it came from my Aunt Jan. I had never eaten lasagna before 1970 and had no idea what it was until that first delicious bite.

If given a choice would you choose a plate of lasagna or
a plate of spaghetti?

Depends, however, I think lasagna would be my first choice.

5. What's a simple pleasure you'd miss if it were not a regular part of your life?

Morning devotions with John

6. If you could be the CEO of any company, which would you choose?

Oh no. I have no desire to be a CEO of any company. If
the question is which company am I a fan of then I have a number. I am a fan of Hobby Lobby. I am a fan of Chick-fil-a. I am even a fan of Wal*Mart because their prices have made a profound difference in my budget.

7. August is just around the bend...bid farewell to July in exactly seven words.

Goodbye, July, it's been nice knowing you.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

  1. I loved the first question and you answer. It brought me right back to all of the freedom I had as a child in the summer. We lived on a lake next to state land. We spent our days walking around the lake and in the forest. We would jump in and out of the lake whenever we got hot, with out clothes on. They would dry and we would jump back in again.

  2. A very enjoyable post, Vee :) I had no idea yesterday was National Lasagna Day. . .is there a day for every food? At least the family and I had spaghetti for supper so we were kind of on the right track.

Looks like a great list for beating the blues, my friend :) And yes, I can see why you did not attempt them all! We had rain all day yesterday and I think today is going to be the same. I have been "deep cleaning" my house getting it ready for the Fall since my son and I will start school in a month so I will probably finish up some rooms today. I was also hoping to back some raspberry eclairs. . .maybe I will being with that :)

Anyway, I am rambling now. . .have a great day, Vee!

  3. Enjoyed this. Soo glad you've joined in! How much we have in common! Though it doesn't really surprise me, I know a kindred spirit when I read one! Enjoy your day Vee!

  4. Hmm, hodgepodge Wednesday is an eye opener for readers as you reveal yourself to us. It's always interesting stuff though that makes me think about some of the questions myself.
I love lasagne, especially a vegetarian one on occassion.

  5. I so enjoyed this post today Vee! Some days are "stones" aren't they! I would have done just what you did to chase the mullygrubbs away! you're up and flying high today! Great suggestions from everyone too!

  6. I don't have many fond memories of childhood summers. Fall, winter, or spring months either. Summers were hot and there was little freedom to explore beyond the confines of the household. Childhood was something endured, rather than savored.

I think your blogging friends gave you a lot of great ideas! I hope the week gets better for you.

  7. I loved walking to the library and getting a stack of books to read, on a quilt under a tree. And getting the Weekly Reader in the mail. Baseball games nearby and trips to the city pool to swim! The ice cream truck coming...oh my! I have so many wonderful childhood memories! And I like your list..I should copy it down in my journal for a 'rainy day'! Sweet hugs, Diane

  8. Lucky Diane who got the Weekly Reader in the mail! I remember the paper that thing was made of. Loved it! So glad to find you still online today, Vee, rather than at river's bottom. Those were some great ideas of ways to beat the gloom. I really did like Diane's best and will probably use it next time the bug hits me, along with planning a trip - with all the lights and candles on.

Hope you have a better day today and I am sorry about the nasty pests getting your flowers. The weeds have gotten mine this year, but since there's not a thing I can do about it this year, I'm putting it out of my mind.

  9. Didn't childhood summers seem to be long, too? It seemed as if there was an unending number of days before us when school closed for the year!

My dad is a Nascar fan. For me, it is an eye-shutter. I mean, the same cars going around in a circle time after time after time after time? Clearly, I don't get it, because there are a number of people who are passionate about it.

I rarely make lasagna (more steps than spaghetti), but we had lasagna at our friends' house on Friday night and now I remember how much I love it!

Your list of suggestions could come in handy for all of us! Hugs...

  10. Ahh summertime. My brother and his wife are crazy Nascar fans. Me, not so much. I'm glad you got some good encouragement yesterday.

  11. Several weeks ago we stopped at Hobby Lobby on a Sunday and learned that they are closed on Sundays. Why?. . .because Sundays are a day of rest and they observe it. It touched my heart.

I'm with you lasagna it is! I'm not a fan of spaghetti noodles. Probably not for the reason one would think.

  12. Hi Vee, You were given some great ways to feel better. I enjoyed the list.
I have never liked lasagna but it is one of John's favorites.
I love HL, CFA and WM too. I loved it when CFA customers stood in lines around the building showing their support for their standards a while back.
    Wishing you a good day.

  13. There are so many topics here on which I would answer exactly as you do that I'm slightly amazed! Not all, of course, but so so many.....I was also lucky enough to live in a time and place where I had amazing freedom to roam the woods with my friends. We only had to be home for meals and when it got dark. What golden memories.

  14. So glad you joined in! Loved your answers..love Chick Fil A (sadly none here), Love Hobby Lobby and Wallyworld has made a difference in my budget too. Blessings

  15. LOL, loved seeing your answers and all the advice. I copied the list and hung it on my bulletin board in my home office! Your readers are very special people!

  16. I would have answered a lot of the questions just like you. : ) Except I do know a little about cars - not much but a little.
What a great list for curing the gloomies : )

  17. Great list of ideas for beating the gloomies!

I love lasagna but never make it. I used to watch Nascar every week but we've gotten away from it for the last 6 years or so. My parents watch and are big fans.

I agree with you about when someone gets a new car and you see it every where., when previously I never saw a one!

On our way home from Florida. I'm using my hot spot and lap top on I 95! in the beautiful state of Virginia!

Home in about 5 hours or so!

  18. I liked that...nodded some, smiled some and reminisced some.

I still remember my first lasagna experience as well. It was 1968 and I was visiting my friend's sister (who was married) and she cooked up a pan of lasagna for us. So good! I like cars and notice them...but not into car racing at all.

We are in Saskatchewan on this hodge-podge Wednesday...heading westward and homeward.

  21. Such a fun post...it's great learning a little more about our blogging buddies. It sounds as though you got lots of good suggestions for your down in the dumps day. Hope they made it better! When I think of summer as a kid, one fond memory is when my dad would bring home a glass gallon jug of frothy root beer from the local "root beer stand" as we called it....you know the ones with the giant mug of root beer that rotated on top. Nothing was more of a treat on a hot summer night. Soda pop was not something we drank routinely...back then it was a special treat! Have a good evening!

  22. I'd say we have a lot in common. This was a fun post to read, I wish I had more time to blog because this would be something I'd love to do.

  23. I remember summers as going on forever with long holidays at the beach and all the family gathered together. Sleeping on beds we called camp stretchers, there were kerosene lamps and an outside loo!

That's a great list Vee - I think we should all print off a copy, as I for one often find myself feeling a little blue!

  24. Vee, I enjoyed reading your hodge podge answers.
I sure enjoyed my childhood summers. They felt long to me back then and I wonder how they have gotten so short. My favorite thing about summers as a child was going camping with my cousins. Back then, it was a tent and a big rack on the top of the car and mom had us loaded down so that as soon as dad came home from work it was a quick shower and we were on our way.

Thank you for sharing the list.. I could use those ideas myself.
