My Scary Story

Let's see, here I am a lot like Hilda, wanting to do a thing while not quite being able to pull it all together.
Source

On Thursday I could smell the dust in "the office." That's never good. Thus began a day of intense cleaning, which involved the moving of the desk that holds the PC from in front of the picture window 90 degrees to the left. John's help was employed and we were so very careful, moving just inches at a time.

It made no difference for when the PC was booted, it didn't. An error message I had never seen or even heard of before popped up: USB device over current status detected will shut down in 15 seconds. It wasn't telling tall tales either for down she went on the dot.

I have one word for this — accckkkkk!

So I have investigated and done all that I know how to do. The USB ports have received close inspection and I see no problems. I have removed USB cords, even the keyboard, all to no avail. I hoped that a good night's rest would cure the overload problem and my jangled nerves, too. Nope.

All this to let you know that I won't be around much. Working with the iPad (beyond just visiting you) is nearly torture and I know that it's only a matter of time when that connection will be lost, too. (When the wi-fi goes I am able to use the PC to reconnect. Obviously, that isn't an option.) So until the PC heals itself, we can afford a computer geek or a new computer (ha, I do crack myself up), The Lord calls us or whatever, I am over and out.

The irony of this is not lost on me. When I wanted to be away, the computer worked fine and all was well and good, but now that I want to be more present...

Hope that all is working well at your place!

Many blessings to you...

Edited to Add: My son is a genius or else he's just a good computer geek. I'll be seeing you one day soon. Thanks so much for toughing it out with me.

  2. Noooooooooooo!!!! This is terrible news. My computer has no problems being moved, (knock on wood) but the USB ports are all rotting away which affects my printing anything or Netflix movies viewed on the TV. I know, this is such a first world problem!! Hope your computer revives and you're able to post regularly once again. We need your cheerful voice. P.S. Have you tried kicking it? ;-)

  6. The iPad is pretty much a useless device. I did carry it with me to Italy and was chronicling my trip on FB. That was fun. Most enjoyment I have received from it in one year. When this dies, and it is already acting up more so than usual, it will NOT be replaced. Need to get the PC up and running.

  7. I'm sorry to hear this Vee. I miss you. If you need a new computer, consider a laptop - I love my MacBook Pro and it totally meshes with my iPhone and iPad, and takes up no space at all! Hugs to you - it's no fun when your computer is on the fritz!

  8. Oh no, Vee! I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a post up from you, and now to find out of your computer woes. I hope it all works itself out somehow or another. Hope you're back soon.

  9. Oh Vee.....I was soo excited when I saw that you were at the top of my blog roll this morning! I have missed you so. Computer woes just drive me wild. We got rid of our BIG one when we moved here and went with just the lap top and I drag it everywhere. I am going to start praying one falls into your lap VERY soon. Hope all else is good! HUGS!

  10. I was thinking of you yesterday!

Yeah, the Blogger app is dismal. I have done a couple drafts with it and when I went to finish them with the desktop computer, I couldn't believe how bad they looked! My young friend, Lanier, posted a long article from her iPad when her computer was in the shop. She said the process "took away her religion" or something similar. I wonder what God wants you to do with this time? :)

  11. Hello Vee, what a surprise, you are not the computer that is. I've had my far share of problems with both desktop and tablets, in fact had to replace a tablet on this road trip only 3 weeks into it. I hope there isn't anything that can't be replaced on it. Anyway good to see you. I call this just one of life's challenges.

  12. Computer woes are so frustrating! I feel your pain. I remember when I spilled coffee on my laptop...and the desktop was not working well...I spent a couple of months doing text on one, photos on the other, neither one well. Uggh. I'd love to hear more from your corner, so I am going to pray for your computer. (Hmmm...is that a selfish prayer?) Maybe the Lord has more plans for your "quiet" time.
    Hugs...

  14. Computers can be such good friends when they work and absolutely the most frustrating gadgets when they have issues. Have you checked on the internet for that error message? Don't do as I did and purchase the absolute promise that will repair it ~ that led to an entire story of frustration and letters to PayPal of fraud. The money was refunded, but I had the same thing happen about a month ago with our Sirius account. I immediately knew it was a fraud and called their headquarters and reported it. Thankfully, I didn't fall for it a second time. Good luck with getting it fixed.

  16. Vee, I have missed you, and had hoped you were back. That picture of Hilda is too funny. And not. One time my computer died, the Best Buy guys said it was dead, and then all of a sudden it "woke up" six months later! These computer woes are frustrating. I was just thinking about how I met you in the middle of your Downton Abbey posts last year, and how I would love to follow along with you again during the next season. Prayers. You are missed!

  18. I'm not getting the photos at the beginning of your post. I remember when I was using son's iPad while waiting for my new computer, it would LOOK like I was uploading photos...but when I posted, they weren't there.
bummer on the computer problems...wish I could help but I am totally lost when it comes to problems with a computer. Heck...Mr. Sweet and I are still trying to figure out how our answering machine works...much less my laptop. lol
Hope it get's fixed soon...missing all your cuteness on your blog posts.

  19. Oh no vee, so sorry to hear about your computer troubles. I sure do miss your blog posts, seems like something is missing from my day. Hope things get sorted out.
A happy day to you and John. : )

  20. Ah... The much dreaded PC won't light up scariness! I know it well.
Try a complete cold boot. Unplug everything from the power and then power up again.
It sounds like one of your USB ports is shorting the thing. Try plugging all that is necessary into different USB ports. This problem usually involves the motherboard which is the point where you need an expert.
As long as you are getting an error message at least your hard drive is still intact.
Missing you lady. Hurry back!! I think of you often and hope all is well in your little corner of the world.

  21. Oh dear...bummer big time. At the farmhouse we are staying at a few miles from our son's place the internet just wasn't working but not just the internet connection was off, my cell phone had no bars either. It's really weird being totally off line and without cell service. We have become so dependent. I'm at my son's now and his wifi works just great so I'm catching up. I do hope things heal themselves and you'll be able to be on line when you want to be...

  22. Ackkk indeed! So sorry for your computer woes, Vee. I'll pray (perhaps a bit selfishly?) that God will work something out for you to be able to connect with your cyber friends who miss you a lot.

  23. Ah, I can get in now and post a comment. Blogger is a bit buggy today, I have found! Computer woes sure do make us grumpy. I've had my share of computer grumps lately too, though I got mine fixed. But I had my doubts for a while. And I felt stupid. I think that is the most aggravating thing about modern technology. When it goes wrong, we blame ourselves for not understanding how to fix it. I don't know how old your computer may be, and whether it is worth fixing at a computer place like Best Buy.

I agree that an iPad is not a good device for doing blog posts. It's fine for reading. And it is passable for commenting (without a separate keypad). You might want to consider get a laptop for Christmas. I would start dropping BIG hints to your adult kids, LOL.

Hope everything else is OK with you and John.

  24. Ok, in case the last message didn't go through.
You and I use the same strategy.... tincture of time and benign neglect.
    Works often enough.
And I agree, since my laptop broke, I use Mister's tablet.... with keyboard attached... otherwise it's torture!
    Blessings.

  27. So sorry to hear this, Vee. I think computers are wonderful when they are working properly. Quite a different story when something goes wrong and we aren't able to figure out a way to fix them. That is just plain frustrating and, of course, greatly interferes with one's ability to blog. Major Acckk!!
I have been hoping that you would choose to return to blogland as I have missed you greatly. I am thinking good thoughts for your computer situation. In the meantime I hope you and John are doing well.

  31. Computer problems are a pain where the sun doesn't shine! I've had my share lately. I finally found out that I have to move my lap top to another room in order for WiFi to work--that started a snowball effect which finally resulted in my husband deciding we should get a "partner" desk for his study. That means we will be moving his old desk upstairs to a spare room and I'll finally have a craft space! Not that we have a lot of time to do all of this as the desk will be delivered on Tuesday, and Wednesday I am having eye surgery and won't be able to do much for a couple weeks. Then it will be Thanksgiving! :) Oh well it is -- never a dull moment--that is life! Hope you get back online again soon!

  34. Hi Vee

It seems that's the way it always goes. Glad to see a post from you. I'm on a much needed break from posting. I didn't post a missing in action post, but I plan on coming back one day. For now I'll be visiting too.

Hope that you and John are well.

  35. Oh dear, the glitch doesn't sound like a cheap fix either! Sounds like possible new ports are in your future. Hope that's not the case. I pray Son The Geek will shine through and fix it with little to no costs. We'll all be anxiously awaiting your return. Meantime, enjoy your time off. I know I am enjoying mine. Stay well. ~:)

  37. hey Vee,
I was thinking about you last week and stopped by to see if you were posting.. Life has been too hectic and busy for me to resume blogging...maybe one day I will return...seems like the same story for lots of us bloggers lately..wonder what in the world is going on? Has blogging gone out of style? and we were just on the forefront of that?
    Hope you're keeping warm.
    Love, Mona
