A Haven for Vee

A Good Long Run

It was a busy Easter weekend and I am late to post.

It was busy in all the good ways that make it celebratory and meaningful. It was not my year to host all the family, though Laurel (my daughter) joined John and me and that meant doing something a little more exciting than beans and hotdogs.

We had pork tenderloin (daughter hates ham), baked potatoes, honeyed carrots, a garden salad, a fruit salad, and Laurel brought lemon chiffon pie. Now remember, I don't do tablescapes and, having seen so many lovely ones this season, I am a little lot embarrassed to show you.

My first choice would have been the pink tablecloth with my lovely green Noritake plates, but could I find the pink tablecloth? That would be no. About twenty minutes after I set the table, I found it hanging in the closet right where it belongs. This plaid springy looking one was my mother's and I always enjoyed seeing it on her table so I simply went with my everyday plates...always easier on my hands anyway.

Later in the afternoon, Laurel had planned an Easter egg hunt for the boys that culminated in finding an "X" that marked the spot where the final prize was hidden. They participated halfheartedly because they said that they were getting too old for such things. My daughter said that she might have to go home and have a good cry. She has always planned wonderful games for them and it has been a good run. They will remember them fondly, I hope.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent playing many games of Connect 4. It was a favorite when my kids were younger and I think that it still is. The grands like it, too.

This was a fun photo to get while Sam was waiting for his turn...Bible reading on Easter Sunday...excellent!

All in all it was a sweet afternoon except that my daughter-in-law was home sick with strep throat. Hope that the few hours the guys were away was helpful for her. She needs her rest. I think this is the second time this season that she has had strep and Sam had it a few weeks ago. Praying that this ends the cycle for them.

Hope to visit soon. As you probably have figured out, I no longer visit each day nor do I comment on every post. It's been a good, long run. Life is getting too short to spend so much time in Blogdom. There is much to do and everything takes three times longer to do it!

Thank you for stopping by today...

Popping in another that I had forgotten to add...

  1. Nor do I visit my blog friends every day, nor comment on every post (life continues to be quite busy here...moving after living in one place for 35 years adds its own special craziness!), but here I am this morning and today I will pop in and say hi.

I think your table is springy and cheerful and special! No need for comparisons. I am sure that the dear ones around your table felt loved and welcome and that's the main thing anyway...even without that pretty tablecloth (love it!) and the rose napkins. :)

I will join Laurel as she cries. Oh, they can't be too old for such games, can they?! (I'm not going to share that with my 13-year-old grandson who hunted at my house. That will remain our secret.) ;) Oh, but if they can still play Connect Four, then all is well!

So good to visit with you this morning and hear about your Resurrection celebration!! Less frequent visiting doesn't equal lesser friendship!

  2. What a precious photo of your grandson reading the Bible. It sounds like you had a wonderful weekend and made some new memories. Enjoy your week! Love your brown eggs...I always buy brown eggs. They are tastier! Hugs, Diane

  3. Good morning! Your celebration sounds just wonderful! I soo understand how Laurel is feeling as my almost 12 year old grandson had to be somewhat "encouraged" to participate in the hunt this year too, lol. Guess they do grow up don't they....and soo quickly too. And boy do I agree....soo much to do and 3 times longer to do it! Have a good day!

  4. Such a beautiful Easter day! Love your tablesetting especially using the tablecloth which belonged to your mother...perfect! Darling pics of the boys!!!

  5. So happy you had a nice Easter Celebration spent with family! I am finding myself wanting to spend less time on the computer too. It easily takes over so much time. So I pop in now and then and occasionally leave a comment. Will be happy to hear from you when you do post. Take care.

  6. Aww - your table look just lovely Vee! Such cute pictures of your adorable grands! I have been feeling the same way about life is getting too short for all the time I spend on my computer - eek! Blessings to you dear Vee.

  7. HI Vee. I think your table looks really pretty and I always like those pastel plaid tablecloths that I see for sale every spring but never buy. The rose napkins are pretty fancy. If you look at my blog today you'll see I used paper napkins! You'll also see that even adult kids like to have an Easter egg hunt so don't fret that your grandsons think they're too old for it....they will miss it one year and ask for one the next year! It looks like you had a great Easter with the family but I hope your daughter-in-law feels better from the strep throat, which I know from experience is horrid! I understand about not visiting and trying to get things done at home. Blogging is time consuming and we do have better things to do especially with the 'impending' spring weather. Have a great week! Hugs. Pam

  8. Vee, Your mother's table cloth would mean more than any other. :) That made me smile . I loved the photos of your family enjoying themselves. Gosh, my girls played that connect four so much. Memories. Glad you enjoyed your Easter with the family and lots of love. xoxo,Susie

  9. I love it when you do post. You are a motivator and you inspire me. How great to see Sam reading the Bible. Hope your daughter-in-law is well soon and join you in hoping this is the end of strep at their home. The boys are too old for Laurel's games?! I agree, that's sad.

  10. Your table looked wonderful and I am sure held some special memories of your Mother. Loved the rose napkins. Take care.

  11. Someone commented about my Easter Table that it looked 'real'. Yours looks real too and I I like it very much.

  12. I'm happy you enjoyed your Easter with loved ones. When my parents were living and their grands were young, they would each read from the Bible on holidays. Sweet memories. Wishing you a very nice day. xo

  13. Love your rosebud napkins and your table. I would have gone on that hunt! My adult kids love a good hunt still...
Love the photo of your grand reading the Good Book! So sorry about the strep. We have 4 snifflers and sneezers here and we all hope it goes away and doesn't come back! Happy week to you...

  14. Hello Vee, I enjoyed your lovely and simply home style table, I feel the same way, I do not go all out as some ladies do. But I did want to comment on your statement about not being on blogs as often. I also feel like the time all goes so fast, and it does take longer to get it all done. I appreciate your honesty, as sometimes I think what is my problem. But we must prioritize our days and love those who God has put in out lives. I think I have really cut back on my time on the computer and blogging.
    Blessings Always, Roxy

  15. I think your table and your home look lovely.Your meal sounds delicious. It just stinks when the kids grow up doesn't it.

  16. Everything was perfect. So glad you had a family get together; I especially love the photo of the boys leaning over the back of the chair...priceless!

  17. I agree with Susan, the boys leaning over the chair is adorable! We love Connect Four around our home--such a classic fun game for us and the grands. I like your plaid tablecloth and I know that it means a lot to you having been your mother's. ♥

  18. Aw, it is sad when the children outgrow those hunts. But it looks like everyone still had fun. May Sam always look forward to reading the Bible!
Your Mother's pastel coloured tablecloth was perfect for your Easter table. And the meal sounds delicious. Like Laurel, I was off of ham for years. I really just hated it. Now I actually have a hankering for it once or twice a year.

  19. Everything about your home seems so cozy and comfortable to me. I love it.
Glad you had a great Easter and agree with you that it is time for the rounds of strep to end.

  20. We're at an age where the important things are having family about and enough to eat, the rest is a bonus. Heck, I used paper napkins this year and look at you making roses with your cloth ones! I think using your mom's tablecloth was nice and you can't go wrong with plaid.
I hear you about the blogging, it's definitely winding down with me and more bloggers are becoming friends on FB so we stay connected that way. Don't know about you but I'm not even using Bloglovin any more, it's crazy to have to sign in every time to make a comment.
That really is a sweet photo of your Sam reading the bible, we plan to go see our Sam get his next karate belt this week.

  21. Well, I think your table was just like a family holiday meal should be...simple and homey. You should have seen mine...or the lack thereof. I was just fine to spend Easter alone after returning from church. Jim worked the weekend, my children are not close currently and it was a dreary and drizzly day. I ate leftovers on a paper plate in my night gown and Oscar and I had a quiet day watching cooking shows on PBS and cuddling...(just to you remind you that Oscar is a dachshund...lol.) Not even one egg was hidden or search for. Sometimes I just like days like that, holiday or not :) Visit when you can, it's all good!

  22. I got you beat Vee for not doing the pretty scape. I used paper plates and paper bowls for my Tomato basil soup. Yes they all ask for it even in warm weather. I admit I am running out of steam. Our family has gotten so big and with all the grands in-laws there is no time or room for all the extended family unless we can get outside. Our next get together will be at our daughter's three story home with huge TVs on each floor and on the decks. Room for each one to stretch out.

  23. Ha ha, 'x' marks the spot, that is such a great picture! Your table looks so serene, and there's always a part of boys that like serene- although they may not admit to being in touch with that! Anyway, your photos are a bright spot, thanks for sharing!

  25. Hi Vee, Your table is lovely and your rosette napkins delightful. Love that the boys found their grand prize, what fun. I bet they'd miss it if there wasn't something planned next year. Looks like a wonderful day with the family, thanks for sharing a piece of your world my friend. ~ Abby

  26. Hi Vee~

Looks like you had an awesome Easter! I don't do tablescapes either, trust me!! We had an Easter egg hunt for our little's, but I can see that our time is running out as well, they are all getting older, and . . . they know the truth about the Easter Bunny . . . :0) We still have a few little's that still believe.

I don't blog everyday either, and I don't comment on every blog that I look at . . . life is short, and I'm not as quick as I used to be. It's all good! I almost like it better when people don't blog everyday. I love to turn on my computer and see a blog post from someone I haven't seen for a while. Although I do miss some who don't blog anymore, like Aunt Amelia's Attic. Do you every hear from her? I miss her.

    Hugs,
    Barb

  28. I liked your table setting simple yet elegant and very pretty spring colours to . Lovely photos , I hope your daughter in law gets better and glad you all had a nice Easter . Thanks for sharing , have a good week !

  29. A tablecloth, like your plaid one, that evokes memories, is the very best sort for celebrations. I used an old one, too (slightly stained). Love the napkin rosettes! It's all about the people around the table. I hope your DIL feels much better very soon.
I hear you about blogging. I'm not ready to give it up, but I comment less and read less. Sometimes it goes in spurts. I do value the friendships I've made through blogging and don't want to lose touch with people (like you).

  30. I like those rose napkins! Very pretty! Glad you got time with the family. Not fun having strep or missing Easter!

My kids played ultimate frisbee and volleyball. Sarah was glad, as she says that usually all the older kids just sit around and are boring!

  31. such a delightful time with family...and i LOVE your Easter table. growing up, my mom always had a nice looking table, but never what i see all over Blogland now. i tried for years to stay up with them but then, budget didn't allow all those fancy dishes and centerpieces and when i started running out of room to store my THRIFT STORE dishes, i just gave up on it all...took most of the dishes back to Goodwill when we moved to the Summer House and it is SUCH a relief to have more cabinet space. Besides, when my large family come together, we go for paper and plastic...i have a thing about pretty paper plates and have stacks and stacks of them in my pantry...same with Solo cups..love the turquoise and lime green .....never played the game ya'll like...we always play games but different ones...two from my kids childhood are Mastermind and ....aww, can't think of the name...where you try to sink ea others ships...
i am about to post our Easter Sunday, both sick, Bill with strep and me with THE CRUD and no family around....
i am not posting quite as often, falling way behind in my visiting...and if you think life seems short and passing by too quickly NOW, just wait until you are 78 or 80....O MY....XOXO

  32. Love the table cloth.
I remember when my kids thought they were too old for the Easter Egg Hunt. I think they played along with me for years because they didn't want to hurt my feelings.
We used to have the connect 4 too. : )
What a great photo to have of Sam reading the Bible!!

  33. Sounds like you had a great Easter, Vee, with a wonderful menu, and fun with games! The plaid tablecloth of your dear Mom's is certainly perfect for Easter and a real treasure, at that. I loved seeing the pic of your grandson reading the bible.

  34. Love, love, love the photo of your grandson reading the Bible - what a precious moment!

Your home looked wonderful for Easter and it sounds like you enjoyed the day :) So sorry to hear your daughter-in-law has strep :( Hugs to you!

  35. I agree, Vee, that life is too short to spend all day on a computer! I feel as if my days have gotten busier than ever because of the grandchildren babysitting and visiting, and hubby being home now, retired, and that we have gotten involved in community volunteer groups. I relax online in the evening, now that I can see the computer screen again--lol--and sometimes I go on during early weekend mornings when I'm not babysitting. Blogging once a week is also a good pace right now.

Your Easter looked very enjoyable! I don't go too crazy with tablescaping. I only own two sets of dishes--one for holidays and one for everyday. I did buy some dessert bunny dishes a few years ago on sale that I use on Easter, and my centerpiece was an egg holder filled with plastic eggs--lol--we already ate the ones we colored. I made way too much food, as usual, but my son and daughter and neighbor friend each takes home a big tray of it to enjoy for the week, so I'm not left with too many leftovers. Thankfully my grand boys still will put on the rabbit ears and do the Easter egg hunt --I'll feel sad when they won't go along with it, but then I'll have the two grand girls who will still be young. When they grow out of it then I'll cry!

I hope your DIL is feeling better and that no one else gets strep.Spring seems to bring on more illnesses than winter!

  36. Your home looks cozy and filled with love. That's much more inviting than perfectly appointed homes with fabulous tablescapes, in my opinion. I might enjoy seeing them as they certainly are beautiful, but they are just so not my thing! We mostly use paper napkins at my house. Even paper plates on occasion. I love your table setting and the pretty plaid tablecloth!
It was fun to see all your family photos from your pretty daughter to Sam reading the Bible. I do hope your DIL gets well quickly. So much illness is going around in our neck of the woods. Our daughter has been battling a fever and chills.
I have noticed a big downturn in blogging by many lately. Myself included. Some days I feel I should just sit down and write my farewell post, but I just can't do it yet. Time is moving swiftly and more so the older I get. There are just not enough hours in the day to do all that I want to do and I admit that I'm terribly slow. For now, I'll keep doing a post a day or two a week and visit when I can. I always enjoy your posts and hope that you'll keep letting us have a glimpse of life at your haven when you can, too. Take care, my friend. ~Cheryl

  38. Hi, sweetie! I'm popping in for a rare appearance. Looks like you had a lovely Easter. Angel and I got an invite to spend Easter with a family, and it was very enjoyable. Such a contrast to last year, when I spent the day alone and with a broken foot. I've been working hard to rebuild my life, so that's why my posts are rare events now. I'm looking forward to meeting you and John in person next month!

  39. Your family Easter dinner looks like a wonderful day.
No need to be embarrassed by your table setting. To my way of thinking it looks very springy, cheerful and pretty.
I just popped over to find out about those rose napkins. I'm amazed at how easy it looks and how pretty they turn out. So glad you shared that link.
It is a sad day when the childhood traditions start falling by the wayside. I can understand Laurel's need for a good cry.
Adorable photo of Sam reading the bible.
I hope your daughter-in-law was able to rest up and will soon be feeling good as new.

  42. I agree with your daughter, I hate ham too, we had roast beef. I think your table is very pretty, we love each other for who we are not how fancy we can make everything right? Sweet photo of your grandson reading the Bible :) I have to agree with you, I get busier all the time and have less and less time to blog and comment.

  46. I'll be so sad when our grandsons reach that age too. Luckily, we have a 2 month old to keep it lasting for a while longer ;) I hear you loud and clear on the time at the computer. I keep thinking the same thing myself! When the weather is nice and gardening starts I'll be cutting way back on computer time. It takes so much time to be a blogger!

  47. I love the tablecloth and its colors. Very springy for sure. For the first time I didn't have Easter dinner and it was such a treat to go to our kids' house and see them taking over the mantle of hosting holiday gatherings. It seems things take longer and more energy than they used to, you described it so well. Which is probably why I haven't been in "blogdom" most of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It looks like a lovely Easter family gathering to me! What...your grandsons have outgrown Easter egg treasure hunts? They all grow up so quickly! I know our twins decided they would prefer to be the 'hiders' rather than the 'seekers' last year...and I was a bit sad to realize that they were beyond the Easter egg hunt years already! How precious...the photo of Sam reading the Easter story from the Bible!

  49. All we can do is the best that we can do, for sure. I have been awful - and I just think life will pass us by if we spend too much time on the internet.....tho it is mighty tempting.

Loved all your pics but the Ben-with-Holy-Bible one is my fav, that is priceless.

Glad you had an enjoyable Easter, we did too. Hugs. ♥

  50. Vee, I so enjoyed seeing your Easter celebrations. I love that rose napkin and will attempt it at some point. I had to laugh at the boys saying they were getting too old. I feel like I have seen them grow up and soon mine will be saying the same thing. We also had one miss Easter dinner because of being sick and one loving wife sitting by his side. So it goes!

I understand the feelings about not enough time to visit so many blogs. I do however always love visiting you when I finally sit down to go visiting.

  51. Looked like a wonderful day, Vee! Ours was simple and I didn't even prepare an Easter dinner. Had a bountiful Easter breakfast at church and then, in the early evening, went to our daughter's home for a simple meal of hot ham & cheese sandwiches (with their leftover Easter ham) and dessert of lemon pound cake, whipped cream and strawberries. It was scrumptious and her table was prettily set with a pastel runner and a Resurrection garden as a centerpiece. I, on the other hand, didn't even set a special table for the day as we didn't eat at home. Love your plaid tablecloth and the rose napkins!
