Movie for a Rainy Day

Lift not the painted veil which those who live
Call life...
~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

The Painted Veil is a 2006 movie starring Ed Norton and Naomi Watts. It is based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham.

It was a rare rainy day this month when a movie seemed like just the thing. This one is currently on my Netflix stream, though I understand offerings vary depending on location.

The movie felt gloomy and dark, and I liked it quite well. I like movies where people wake up and become aware of their own sin. I like redemption and forgiveness stories and this was all that. It was a movie where themes can be pondered and reflected upon. Very good when one is in a certain frame of mind.

Caution: Not much language, but some nudity.

That's all I have to chatter about today. Have you seen it? What did you think? Have a better recommendation? I am ready to hang out in a freezing movie theater. ☺

Stay cool now...

  2. Glad you found a movie you like! I am not one for going to see a movie in the theater - too expensive and no way to pause the film. The only time my wife and I go to the theater is with our son to see a kid's film.

  3. Hi Vee,

I haven't seen this movie -- thank you for the tip. Lovely images, by the way, but definitely dark, as you said. I think the movie "Atonement" may be in a similar vein to this one; our son had to read the book in school, and he told me about it. I don't think it has a happy ending though.

I agree with Linda; I'm glad you took a day to relax. I love a good movie at the theater, but it's hard to find one I'm interested in lately. If you find a good one, please share!

    Hugs to you,

  4. I've not seen this one. We just went to the movies last night with my parents and my kids to see the new Star Trek movie. Most movies I'm okay with waiting to see when they come to Netflix or Amazon, but a Star Trek movie must be seen in the theater! We enjoyed it very much. Don't know if you like Sci-fi or not though.

  5. I haven't seen or heard of this movie but I'm all for redemption! Glad your area got watered with rain!

  6. Sounds like my kind of movie, Vee. I'll check it out. We are not much into going to the movies, but a freezing theater sounds good to me. It's been so hot and oppressive here with no rain. Storms all around us, but no rain. My garden is thirsty. There's nothing like the rain from the heavens unlike the water from the spigot. I like your header, so peaceful and serene. Have a cool afternoon. ♥

  9. Thank you for this recommendation, Vee! It sounds like a good movie for a very HOT day, too....

  10. It sounds familiar but I don't think I've seen it. I'll have to add it to my queue. Thanks for the recommendation. I have a hard time finding movies that interest me. Most recent ones seem to have so much foul language I can't watch. I am sick to death of the "f" bomb being dropped in what seems like every sentence. Earl and I really enjoyed Longmire, which is also on Netflix. A really good series.

  11. last night I told my husband "we should watch a movie with a lot of snow"!

  12. A good movie, with lots to think about. But definitely a darker movie, very sad. But you're right, there's redemption there.
I have taken to watching an episode or two of Andy Griffith in the evenings. Mayberry and Aunt Bee seem an antidote to the depressing news. I have to be in a certain frame of mind to handle certain movies and books. Glad you enjoyed it. xo

  14. I've not seen this movie and we no longer have Netflix but the Canadian version has much less available anyway.
For now I'm reading more but will want something of substance for fall TV viewing.

  15. Hi Vee, thanks for the recommendation. I've put it in my Queue - for a day relaxing in a cool room with a tall drink watching something romantic and far removed from ordinary life, haha!

  16. I haven't seen that movie but the photos are beautiful. I do like the PBS Masterpiece Mysteries that are broody such as Wallander and Shetland, though. For some reason, they draw me in to the characters even more than the bright sunny shows. Although, they have their time and place.

I've been using Amazon credit to slowly purchase some favorite TV shows and movies since the price is reasonable on most of them now. There is little on TV these days.

  17. It's my favorite movie. I love the scenery ~ breathtaking! It's sad, but ever so meaningful. We saw BFG recently. It's worth watching and no bad language.

  18. Haven't seen this one but will check our Cdn. Netflix for it.... As Judith said, sometimes our "offerings" are considerably less than you get...

  19. Vee, I have this movie and can't remember if I have watched it all the way thru or not. Monday and Tuesday this week, Ted and I watched a movie in the late afternoon. Circle Of Friends and Deeply. It was just too hot to be outside and we just relaxed and had a snack. It was a fun couple days. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie

  20. I love movie recommendations - never know what to pick! Must check this one out. We are trying to stay cool over here and could use some of that badly needed rain - eek!

  21. Hello, dear Vee! How are you on this fine Wednesday evening? I hope you are well...

I must say that I have not see this film though it sounds quite interesting. We don't watch many movies so I am not often aware of what's new and good. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Hugs to you!

  22. No, I haven't seen it but it sounds like a good one for a rainy day.
I think of you often and say a little prayer. : )

  23. Bernideen's comment made me smile. I just changed my desktop wallpaper from a sunny summer garden to a tree lined path in the snow with every twig ice encrusted!

  24. Thanks for the recommendation, Vee. I am hopeless with movies - never remember a name or what I've seen if I do to one!

  25. I much prefer a movie from another period of time, such as this one. And redemption is always good to see. And in this heat, staying inside and watching a movie on a sunny day is good for me!

  26. This movie looks like something I would also enjoy. I may just have to look it up and see if I can find it on my Amazon Prime. Stay cool and eat lots of popcorn :)

  27. i've viewed this film twice .. so far .. and learn something new each time. appreciated for every reason you listed, i'll be watching yet again. :) {wish it would rain here}

  28. Thanks for your recommendation. Have you seen 'Miracles From Heaven' (Jennifer Garner)? Good faith-based story. We watched that one not long ago...and so I still remember the name. :)

    Thinking of you often! hugs.

  29. I haven't seen this one. Lately I've been in the mood for cartoon movies...the pet one, and finding dori...I think as an escape from all the horrors on tv and on the news.

  30. I haven't seen it either but I'll put it on my list to watch. It's funny...I look at the TV guide sometimes and noticed that King Kong was playing and this is the same actress. (that was a pretty scary movie, King Kong!) We ordered the second season of When Calls the Heart dvds and we watch one every night. They are really good. Lots of hugs to you, Diane

  31. Vee, glad I stopped in today - I don't think I've ever heard of this movie! Going to look for it now. Thanks!

  32. Thanks for the movie recommendation. Any more, one hates to pay to rent/buy/go to the theater unless we've got a review from a trusted friend.... too much trash out there.

You wrote to me about your neighbor losing a tree. I'm so sorry for that loss. It's just been that kind of a summer, hasn't it?

  33. Hi Vee- yes we watched that one - I remember liking the great job with props and costumes - and great acting - but I remember it being very slow-paced. I think I will watch again because that's all I remember.

We had some thunder and lots of clouds and a sprinkle here and there, but so far no rain....and we need it desperately. We also need this ungodly heat and humidity to dash away, while I am dreaming of perfect weather for an outdoor tea that can never seem to happen because of stupid Ohio weather! : - )

    Hugs! ♥

  34. I saw this on Netflix menu and have been wanting to watch it, sounds like a good movie :-) Enjoy your weekend!

  35. Sounds like a good movie but tend not to watch TV in the summer as we are mainly outside or doing something. We resort to the TV in bad weather. Take care.

  36. I love that movie, although sad and for a rainy day...good choice!

  39. Hi Vee,
I haven't seen this movie but I understand the need sometimes for something a bit less than sunny and funny!

  40. I've not seen it...but love Ed Norton..and sometimes we just want a movie about life...it's not all funny, sexy and happy....and I carry a jacket in our car year 'round as movies, restaurants and lots of other places are too cold even in the summertime...

  41. I haven't seen it. I'm now adding it to the list. Wish I could suggest some, but I haven't seen a movie in ages.

  42. I just watched this movie the other night and would also recommend it for the very same reasons you mentioned.

  43. I did see that movie years ago on video and remember that I liked it.

Have you seen The Book Thief? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816442/ I also loved the book with the same title.

The last movie we saw in the theater was The Revanant. Not exactly an easy movie to watch, but I'm sure it was very true for the era it depicted. We also watched the entire 1990's Ken Burns documentary series called "The West" recently -- got it from the library. It was so meaningful to us now that we live in the west.

  44. I've never seen or heard this movie, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. A rainy day is a perfect day for a movie or a good book. Have you seen the Dr. Blake series, Vee? It is on my Boston PBS channel. I think you would like it. It's just about my favourite show now.
