My Treasure Box

Do you have as many "treasure boxes" in your home as I have in mine? There's this one holding the dominos inside and the dust topside.↓

↓And this one holding those things John wanted to save, mostly church bulletins and old copies of daily devotionals, but also things that surprised me like photos he took when I was not aware and cards and notes I wrote him. I didn't know that men did that, but this one did. He pretty much saved everything.☺

This is the box that holds the set of plated silverware.↓

↓Here's a music box where I can switch out graphics or photos. Guess I am either very late or very early.

These boxes are filled with mementos for John's girls: photos, letters, and even little drawings and old cards. ↓

↓Here's a ceramic box that my mother used for peppermint candies. I can still smell them a little, though faintly, faintly, faintly.

This may look like a jewelry box, though it is for stationery.↓

I have a favorite. Since you are visiting me today, you are sitting in it. What?! Yes, I consider this little blog my treasure box filled with all the people and things I love best. Many of my favorite scriptures and quotes are contained here. It also holds many of the lessons I have learned and thinks I have thinked. ☺ It might even contain a rant or two. Most of all, it contains the precious memories that I might forget without it.

Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.

~ Kevin Arnold

Now tell me, do you journal, keep a diary or a blog? If you don't, please consider it. If you have gotten away from recording your doings, your feelings, your failures, your joys, sorrows, too, because life is crazy, busy or complicated, plan a time for returning. You will be glad that you did.

See you soon!

  2. Vee, you are so sweetly sentimental - I just adore you and treasure the blessing of meeting you through this wonderful thing called blogging.

    Hugs! ♥

  3. Boxes can hold so many memories. I currently am attempting to get rid of so much of the clutter. I do keep my blog but I have been very slow about writing in it these days.

  4. I loved all of your treasure boxes each bringing back so many wonderful memories. A joy to see them.

  5. I love that you have treasure boxes. Things like that are special. They are a part of who we are -- a tangible memory of times gone by and a record of us for those yet to come.

I keep a blog and you are right, it is a memory. So many times I refer to it to remember just what happened when. I have tried in the past to keep journals and was never able to. But I can keep a blog. And it's me. Thank you for keeping up your blog. I'm glad I am getting to know you.

  6. I do have a few of those boxes on my closet shelf packed with cards and letters from the past. I also have many diaries that my mom kept. I don't journal or keep diaries. Oh wait, yes I do... in blog form. I like how you have given it the name of a treasure box. It must have been a bittersweet moment to look through John's box. I'm impressed that he kept them all together. I think when Brett wants to keep something he's unsure what to do with it so it ends up in his sock drawer. All kinds of "treasures" in there :).

  7. Back to say how lovely your header is. Love it!!

  8. I don't have any treasure boxes! Yes, you know I keep a blog, my original blog, www.lavenderhillstudio.blogspot.com is still there, though I don't publish on it anymore. But it is a history of most of my mosaic pieces.

  9. Such a sweet post! I love that John saved these treasures...cards and photos and devotions...a bit of his heart there for you to discover. Really, the things that we treasure do say something about us.

On a practical, non-sentimental note, containers are great for organizing and hiding stuff that wouldn't look so great sitting in piles here and there.

I totally agree with the value of gathering of "treasures" in a journal or blog. I am glad to be able to read your treasures!

    1. Oh, I loved your statement: "Really, the things that we treasure do say something about us." So very, very true.

  10. Oh Vee...I love this post. Jim and I both have some special boxes similar to yours that hold momentos and various sentimental items. Every now and then I will open one up and refresh my memory as to what all is in them. I have several journals that I have written down thoughts and prayers, etc., throughout the years but wouldn't want one soul to see what's inside some of them except me and God. I really am kind of embarrassed for even God to see some of them but hey, we both know that's not possible...He understands though, right? I keep them well hidden...I hope :) And then, as you know, I use my blog now to do most of my musings. I love how you consider your blog as your treasure box. You may have just convinced me that blog is mine as well :) Hugs!♥♥♥

  11. This is wonderful Vee! I'm so glad John was a keeper of things, and that you have them. How beautifully you have collected things for his girls too!

Sarah really likes boxes to contain things. I would love a tea box, and one with plated silverware!

I sometimes write in a scrapbook journal, but mostly I write at my blog, and I am thankful I do. I believe I am leaving a family record for my kids of who I was, what we did during these years and how I loved them!

  12. So many memories and wonderful places to keep all the treasures.
I've kept a journal for many many years, but since I've blogged my blog has become my journal.
I also still keep a bit of a journal to write down the more personal memories.

  13. Love your little treasures Vee that holds dear memories for you. I too love boxes....and yes, I journal. Not as much as I used too but let's just say that when I am gone from this old world my three daughter will be able to have a HUGE fire should they decide to burn my journals. I hope by then they will be old enough to appreciate my journals. (Well, some of them...I may need to burn now) LOL! Enjoyed this today my friend. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  14. Vee, great boxes! I love boxes (and lidded tins) and use them for everything. Funny that you wrote a bit about blogging today and I put up a post about blogging just this morning. I *never* blog about blogging!

  15. I love that John saved those things. I do blog you know, wink wink. It's amazing to me when I search the archives and see all that has gone on over the years. Being surprised when I find something from when I just started blogging reminds me that I do soon forget and it's good to be reminded sometimes. I have other treasure boxes, too. Happy November to you!

  16. Treasure boxes are wonderful secret places for special things, and they take many forms. I love lidded boxes, especially those made of wood. And yes, I have "a few." My blog has become somewhat of a journal for me too, I often look back to find something, whether it's a recipe, a book review, or whatever. Hugs to you Vee on this dreary Nov. day

  17. I love your new header! Yes, I do keep things in boxes although my boxes are usually cardboard or plain plastic boxes. Ha! I used to jot down daily happenings in a small notebook from time to time. Never consistently. But now my blog serves as a sort of online journal, I think.

"Thinks I have thinked" Funny girl. lol!

  18. Vee, this is one of my favorite posts of yours. Believe me there are many others. We have many treasure boxes in our home. Sometimes I wonder about this, but when I open a box full of my Mama's puzzle books that she used as a journal, my heart know why. I do keep a daily journal and a garden journal. Some of the thoughts in those journals need to be burned by a trusted one someday. ♥

  19. Hi Vee, I love this post and I have enjoyed reading the comments, also. Oh, to find the box your John kept with saved cards, photos etc. must have made you catch your breath. It was sweet to remember you could still faintly smell your mom's candy in the one box, too. I have a few special boxes....one contains mama and daddy's Bibles (which are rather fragile), I have an old Emeraude powder box and the scent brings back memories of mama. My John has many wooden or cigar boxes filled with little bits of the past. Like I said, this post of yours is a favorite! Have a nice evening.

  20. Well, Vee...I just had to laugh a bit! Yes indeed, I save "things" in boxes..pretty boxes...all over and in every closet I think! You never know what treasuresyou will come across! Perhaps it's a common thread among us...hugs!

  21. I am sentimental and have various boxes for different treasures. The Gardener keeps notes that are very special to him. I have not been sorry for things that I have saved, and in recent months have been so happy to find things that I can share with other family members, especially as the "passing down" stage is soon upon us. Your boxes are delightful.

  22. What fun and how satisfying are Treasure Boxes! I have many and from many sources. Many are inherited. They hold all manner of things, and now I think I need to go take another look at them....

  23. We find treasure boxes everywhere if we look :) I love the one holding your dominoes. The rest are all sweet because of what they hold or once held. Little things mean so much. My journal is my blog. I always had a hard sticking with the discipline of actually writing on paper, but using photos and typing seems to work for me. Now that I have 9 years of blog journaling behind me it is so nice to look back at the posts and memories! And yes, some of the people who have interacted with me the entire 9 years. Special friends and treasures.

  24. Oh I like your treasure boxes, Vee! I might just do a blog post on mine one day and will credit you with the idea. Unfortunately, even old cookie boxes from Sams Club look like treasure boxes to me. I know, it's pretty sad. But there are some legitimate ones. This was such a fun blog post, Vee. Okay, and now about the blog. Yes, I have a blog, which has been ill attended since June 6, but which I hope will recapture the wind in its sails pretty soon. It's getting easier for me to sit to blog, but then again it's hard to walk if I've sat too long. Back to more exercises. They're all helping.

    1. Kindred spirits we are. Didja notice the tins in the first pic? I love them, too.

So glad that you are feeling better, Judy, and getting back into the swing of blogging, though you have really done very well through your period of recuperation.

  25. Oh how I loved this post! You are such a treasure to blogdom. I have been very lax with my wee blog that started out so strong and was a way for me to journal and to stay in touch with my daughter who lived so far away at that time. I struggle to write at times but cannot deny how good it is to look back and "remember" what has been.

  26. What a sweet post, dearest Vee! I loved seeing and reading what each treasure box holds. I have a few treasure boxes here and there around the house. As for writing, I write down things about my grands and give them a letter from me on their birthday every year of different happenings in their life for that particular year. It's one way for me to connect with them and I hope maybe someday, they'll put them in a treasure box. Maybe I should buy them one?

  27. Memories of you and my other precious blogger friends are why I came back to blogging. It IS a treasure box, and I am so thankful to be able to continue to open it as often as I can. Blessings to you as you sort through your memories and move along with life.

That warms my heart. There is quite a pull to this place I call Blogdom that we love so well. It is almost a Narnia experience. The Lord has surely blessed us. Thank you for stopping in...

  28. The first box is beautiful. I love all the detail on it. I mainly have treasure drawers :) My MIL kept a diary until dementia began. One of them will be sitting in front of her photo boards at her memorial celebration this weekend.

  29. Ah, what treasures are to be found in old boxes like these. Your John was quite sentimental in keeping things for you and his girls. I keep a daily diary of sorts in an agenda book, mostly of events, weather and the like but no personal feelings written down. I do have some old journals that I kept though. My writing (pen holding) skills are gone so the computer is much easier for me. I wish I could record things on it but haven't figured out how to do that yet. I have a small wood box that was my grandmother's which contained old photos, papers etc. which are treasures to me. Fun discoveries. Lovely post Vee. I wish you a wonderful weekend.

  30. We are kindred spirits, Vee. I have all sorts of treasure boxes around the house, AND a row of journals on a shelf in the bedroom. I've journaled for many years, off and on, here and there. It's quite something to go back and read old entries to discover how much I've changed or not changed.
Your description of John's box had tears pricking at my eyes - what a sweet and loving man he was. You are blessed in knowing how well he loved you.
I like your idea of thinking of your blog as a treasure box. I'd certainly agree with you. You have such a wonderful way with words. Have a wonderful day, Vee.

  32. Oh, I have so many little treasure boxes that I can't even find some of them...and my Family Bible has to be emptied every yr or so as there's so many card from kids and grands, newspaper clippings and such...Yes, and I use my blog as a journal for mostly happy things...my unhappies go into a small journal that my daughter gave to my mama ....*don't tell anyone that when I get sad..or missing Mama, I write to her in her journal. Now, I'm sad...

  33. I will start up with my scrapbook journals as soon as all outdoor chores cease to take my time. Otherwise I just ponder out loud on the blog.

  34. Love all your treasure boxes and I have several myself but, like you, my favorite is my blog. It is such a treasure that I have printed into book form every year. Happy weekend!

  35. Hi Vee,just read back over your recent interesting posts and see you have been keeping very busy.
Your autumn is much further along than here - we've been in the 80's this week but as of today it's cooling off much to my joy and satisfaction. Many thanks for your always appreciated comments.

I love storing things in boxes too - you have good collection going there. It's a warming feeling have little things tucked away to treasure - lovely that John enjoyed doing that, and that you have come across little surprises. Bob saves everything - but is very neat and methodical - he still should start some downsizing soon though, things are getting a bit out of hand!

I no longer journal since I consider my blog my online journal. I love to go back and re-read about my travels, also posts I've done of my childhood in England etc. I do write little notes to myself when 'on the road' to jog my memory when posting - and always have stories racing about in my mind and wishing I had more time to share!

Have a lovely Maine autumn weekend Vee.
Hugs from the south - Mary

  36. What a great post. You think and share things that I walk by every day. I'm so glad you made me think of the treasure boxes I have. I must share mine with you. Your treasure boxes hold some very precious memories. It's wonderful that John saved his precious items and that you are creating treasure boxes for his daughters. I hope they will cherish what he saved and what you have done to share with them.

  37. Hard to blog during a life season that is impacting me on so many levels that share would be edited and therefore like sharing a shell on the beAch while a tidal wave was washing in.

  38. Such a beautiful post, Vee.
I loved hearing how your dear husband saved many things, even church bulletins. :)
I too have many boxes that hold, to me, some very precious treasures, including some church bulletins. :)
I love to journal even write on my daily calendar of the happenings that took place for that day. I started keeping a journal for just my blogging friends writing down important dates and such. You think you will remember things, but not always the case. :)

It was so nice to come for a visit.

Have a beautiful rest of your weekend~~
