I Beg Your Pardon Hodge Podge

1. April showers bring May flowers or so the saying goes. Has your April been filled with showers?

It began with a freak April 1 snowstorm. Not funny. There have been a lot of showers and the final week of the month will end in daily rains.

Do you carry an umbrella, wear a slicker, or make a run for it?

I wear a black raincoat with a hood,  A Little Black Riding Hood of sorts.

Besides rain, what else has filled your April?

See Saturday last's post. I can't go into it again.

2. What's something you could you give a 30-minute presentation on at a moment's notice and with zero preparation?

a. Christian Allegory b. grammar

3. Share with us a favorite food memory from childhood.

My mother was one of those who often welcomed my sister and me home from school with freshly baked cookies cooling on the rack. She was not only a Toll House mom, she was also a peanut butter, oatmeal, whoopie pie, melting moments, molasses cookie, etc., kind of mom. Bliss!

4. What's a song you thought you knew the lyrics to, but later discovered you were wrong?

Not sure that this has ever happened to me so I'll refer to my default story. My Aunt Marjorie once heard my Uncle Red belting out lyrics to Lynn Anderson's "I Beg Your Pardon, I never Promised You a Rose Garden" this way: "I beg your pardon, I never promised you a raise, Gordon." Uncle Red was obviously both hearing impaired and fiscally minded. 😊

5. According to one travel website, the most overrated tourist attractions in America are-
Niagara Falls (NY)✔️
Hollywood Walk of Fame (California)✖️
Times Square (NYC)✔️
Epcot (FL)✖️
Seattle Space Needle (WA)✖️
Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market (Boston)✔️

How many of these have you seen in person?

exactly half of them as noted by ✔️

Of those I have visited, my favorite day was spent in Boston at Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. I was with my mother, sister, and daughter...no better company. We had a blast and even took a horse drawn carriage tour of the old Boston neighborhoods. It was gray, damp, and chill, but what fun! Oh, the laughter! It rings in my ears yet.

Did you feel like a tourist? yes

Did you care? a little

Tell us about a place (not on the list) you've visited that might be considered a tourist trap, but you love it anyway.

I tend to shy away from tourist traps and visit them in off seasons when the hordes have moved on. I love the coast of Maine, but it is a tourist trap from May to October. We love our tourists, though. πŸ˜‰

6. Your signature clothing item?

jeans and a white tee shirt

7. What's an experience you've had you think everyone should experience at least once? Why?

Everyone should walk The Sawdust Trail and ask Jesus into his/her heart. I mean it! It'll change one's life and one's eternal destiny.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Funny that wardrobe should be mentioned...I have recently been given the mother lode in clothing...it adorns my dining room table even now. More on that tomorrow or Friday...

~what bounty~

  2. I have a brother in Boston, but haven't been to see him (and he's been there for about 20 years!). I definitely want to do the touristy things there...so much history! I also want to go to Maine...the pictures are just beautiful.

  3. Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog- isn't the Hodgepodge community fun? Oh my, I will definitely pray as you deal with the aftermath of the horrible break-in (and woefully negligent tenant!). I'm so sorry that happened to you!

  4. Regarding #1 - I was a 'Little Beige Riding Hood' yesterday having to go out in torrential rain which flooded much of Eastern North Carolina over the past 3 day storm. Water under the cottage, the back garden has washed to the front - a huge mess we just don't need when we're packing to leave for Italy, sigh! Nature is often cruel.

Regarding #5 - visited all and, like you, Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market is my favorite on the list. We used to go to Boston often when living in New England - Bob worked there several years. Here in NC I love visiting the fabulous Biltmore House in Asheville. An expensive tourist destination but it takes one back to a time we'll never see again when elegance and good manners reigned. The gardens are beautiful and the countryside with vineyards and mountain views delightful. In all, a little piece of heaven on earth.. . . . . . and Asheville itself is such a great small town, full of creative people and awesome restaurants!

    Happy week dear Vee.

  5. I feel like I need to visit that market now. The last time I was in MA was on our way to ME. Our son was graduating high school. That's a long time ago.

  6. Love your hodgepodge answers! And look at all those nice clothes. I went through my closet yesterday to see what I should be wearing (instead of wearing the same thing every day). Wish it would rain here! Enjoy your day!

  7. I have been to a few of those places. "a raise, Gordon", LOL!!

  8. i just love your Hodge Podge posts. I loved wearing a yellow rain slicker when taking walks in Maine along the coast...we ran into many tourists and it was lovely to think "we live here!" What lovely memories of your Mother....and the ride through Boston...bliss indeed!

  9. Hi Vee, I prefer a coat with hood to an umbrella. That is really cute about the song lyrics. Look at all those clothes you have! I pretty much wear jeans and t-shirts all the time. I think I outgrew the few "nice" clothes I did have! lol

  10. You can never go wrong with jeans and a white T-shirt...that spells comfort to me. My mom always greeted me after school each day with a big, cold glass of milk and cookies. Miss her.

  11. Your story of the mistaken song lyrics made me laugh out loud (literally)! I am going to share that with Ron later. It could have been him. He creates his own lyrics all the time (if in doubt, make it up!), and he is also quite fiscally minded. :D

Oooo . . . the mother lode of clothing sounds exciting! I love when that happens! A few years ago, my sister lost a lot of weight and I fell heir to her wardrobe. I loved it. I didn't even mind that she was way smaller than I. (Okay, I minded a wee bit.)

Your answer to #7 is perfect.

    (I also like answer #2.)

  12. Loved reading your Hodgepodge, Vee! Uncle Red's take on the lyrics was hilarious. Continuing to keep you in my prayers re: the break-in and aftermath thereof. Looking forward with interest to seeing how God answers!

  13. Great Hodgepodge! That's a hilarious version of the song. Love New England - we still have a house in Rhode Island, we keep thinking it might be our retirement home but when we moved to Washington State, we found we liked it there just a little bit more. Can't wait to go back. There really is something about living in close proximity to water.

  14. What a wonderful way to be greeted after school! I did do that for my kids... but only occasionally! lol Your uncles' lyrics were hysterical...I loved it! All those clothes look exciting. I'll be looking forward to reading all about it!

  15. Aww...love those sweet cookie memories of yours. Your Uncle Red's version of that song me literally LOL! I just looked up saw Cheryl said the exact same thing...HA! Man...you certainly did hit the mother load with all of those clothes! I don't think I have ever heard the term the Sawdust Trail...but it has to be awesome! Great answers, all. :D

    1. Mother Lode

      I'm becoming insufferable. 😳 Grammar...spelling...homonyms from hell...they're my thing. 😏

    2. "The Sawdust Trail" refers to going to the altar in today's vernacular. There was "a sawdust trail" in the evangelistic tents of old beginning with Billy Sunday.

  16. Haha! Love Uncle Red's take on that song! Your cookie memories are sweet. Love your answer to #7. Yes, and amen. You write well and I enjoy reading what you write.

  17. Ha-the song! That's great! My mother was (still is!) a wonderful baker too. Her Christmas cookies are kind of famous in our little town and I have treasured memories of the baking and sneaking into the closet where she stacked them to sneak a few : ) Happy Wednesday!

  18. Hey Vee, Hope you are doing well these days!
April showers bring May flowers or so the saying goes. Has your April been filled with showers?
No rain showers and we surely need some.
But my month has been filled with showers of blessings as each day is a gift.

Do you carry an umbrella, wear a slicker, or make a run for it?
Umbrella but most often leave it in my car!

Besides rain, what else has filled your April?
Three immediate family birthdays, ballgames and LIFE.

    2. What's something you could you give a 30-minute presentation on at a moment's notice and with zero preparation?
The Study of Ruth in the Bible. I have taken a Bible Study on Ruth several times over the years an have taught on it MANY times. Our Adult Co-Ed class just finished up Ruth and now I am about to teach it for summer! YEP, I like me some Ruth and Naomi.

    3. Share with us a favorite food memory from childhood.

This is easy because my fondest food memories would be with my grandmother. She ALWAYS had something for us kids to eat, whether it was cooked, store bought (which was very seldom) or icecream sandwiches in the freezer. But one of the times I remember with affection was my granny fixing steak and french fries for me and Papa. Steak was GOLD and I remember her so lovingly saying, "Baby, Granny can only fix steak when you come to stay with me and papa. It always made me feel so special.

    4. What's a song you thought you knew the lyrics to, but later discovered you were wrong?
Well, I just can't think about that one.

    5. According to one travel website, the most overrated tourist attractions in America are-
    Niagara Falls (NY)✔️
    Hollywood Walk of Fame (California)✖️
    Times Square (NYC)✔️
    Epcot (FL)✖️
    Seattle Space Needle (WA)✖️
Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market (Boston)✔️

How many of these have you seen in person?

    Epcot
And I didn't care for it but we took the kids and it made them happy.
Did you feel like a tourist? yes, that spent lots of money!

Tell us about a place (not on the list) you've visited that might be considered a tourist trap, but you love it anyway.
Gatlinburg, Tn but I still loved it!

    6. Your signature clothing item?
Black dress pants and a colored top is my go too for sure! But when not working (which I work 3 days a week) one can usually find me in a pair of jeans with pullover tee for goofing off or jeans with a blouse or nice top if out and about.

    7. What's an experience you've had you think everyone should experience at least once? Why?
Vee, I LOVE what you wrote! Melted my old heart that accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior and knows where my destination is! Love it.
I would say since we just visited the Ark in KY that I would highly recommend others going at least once.

    8. Insert your own random thought here.
Despite my faults, failures, and shortcomings, My Jesus still loves me! WOW! That just gave me the Holy Bumps!

Hugs and blessings to you Dear Vee.
    Cindy

  19. I can't stop laughing at your #4. I must remember that! I sure wish Mr. C. had an employee named Gordon. LOL The clothing photo reminds me of how many clothes we've cleaned out of here and still have more to go. Getting you-know-who to do his part of the project is like performing root canals without novocaine. In other words, lots worse than simply pulling teeth. I'll have to be careful around you regarding grammar. My favorites are dangling participial phrases, but I can never dredge one up on the spur of the moment.

  20. Uncle Red's version must have been met with much laughter. Ha!
Your mom sounds similar to mine in the after school snack department. Something very comforting about coming home from school to homemade cookies and milk. I'm curious about the melting moments. My mom didn't make them, but they sound like they'd be yummy.
I'll be staying tuned for the story on the mother lode of clothing. Looks like fun.

  21. Can't wait to see more on the motherlode! I smiled at your Uncle Red! Funny! I've visited Niagra (on the Canada side) and Time Square, Hollywood (big waste, but we lived in CA and visitors wanted to go there), and Epcot!

I love the Maine coast, and have only visited in the Autumn. I want to come again.

  22. I do all of the rainy day things. : )
I used to have cookies baked for my kids too after school!
My mom was always at work so I didn't see her after school.
    Amen to number 7!!

  23. I almost did the HodgePodge for today, but decided not to at the last minute. Perhaps another time.
Lots of rain here, and plenty of flowers all of a sudden, too. I hope May brings scads of them. I've only visited Niagara Falls, the Canadian side, of those attractions. I've seen the Seattle Space Needle, but not been up in it.
Hope your week is going better than the last couple.

  24. Uncle Red could have been in our family, Vee. So funny---my youngest sister would sing the funniest words to songs--I need to ask her if it was on purpose or for real. We always thought it was to irritate us! I love that your mother had cookies cooling for you when you returned home from school. What a sweet memory. ♥

  25. I love this and I love Uncle Red's version of that song. lol My kinda guy. I am going to have to try this hodgepodge one of these days because I get such a kick out of reading everyone else's answers.

Hope you have a blessed night- xo Diana

Your mom sounds like the best kind. Sounds like my grandma actually :)

  27. I keep saying I want to join in Hodgepodge one day but never seem to remember till I start reading them on other's blog.

I liked Boston and Faneuil Hall. I also loved Niagara Falls and Times Square and Epcot and the Space Needle, etc, and did not think any were overrated I guess I am a real tourist...lol
My hubby is an Uncle Red of sorts--he never seems to remember lyrics even though he loves music of all kinds.
I'm curious about all those clothes! My favorite outfit is jeans and a cotton mock turtleneck about 75% of the time! :)

  28. You have the best way with words.

And now "Rose Garden" is soooooooooo stuck in my head.

Funny my brother and I were talking about that very thing just last night. We had quite a few we botched and even funnier, other botches - funny funny funny. : - )

  29. Gosh I detest tourist traps too! We always try to stay out of any crowded events when we travel. Still, Maine is one of those places we have talked about visiting, I would hope we could avoid throngs of people and still find lots of charming places to explore if we ever go.:)

    ReplyDelete
  30. You certainly did have a lot of clothes to try. Our weather has been so dry all March that crops and gardens are suffering. However that is nothing compared what some people are facing these days.

  31. Getting caught up on last weeks Hodgepodge....
Wow, your mom was awesome baking those cookies for you. Enjoyed the lyrics change :)
