A Haven for Vee

Sawdust

Dear Friend,

It is official. I have become dull as sawdust. I can, of course, prove this.

First: Though I have worked for several months in John's barn toting, tugging, pushing and packing, I have wrenched my back here at my own haven trying to remove old caulk. What is the weirdest injury you've had in the past month?

Second: The grands are playing soccer again this fall and have made some spectacular plays. I have not remembered my camera once.

Third: My sisters-in-law and a friend (who might as well be a sister-in-law ☺) and I went on a long-planned excursion last Friday. Again, I forgot my camera. We are in the planning stages for a leaf-peeping tour. Must.remember.camera.

Fourth: The weather. It has cooled. The furnace is running. Up the street. My sister once told me that all my letters home back in the day were about the weather. Some things never change.

~Flannel Shirt Weather~
~Ahhhhh...much better!~

Fifth item: My big decorating choice of the early autumn required changing. Something about form and function. It looked good to my eye, but the window shades could no longer be reached. Bugger it!

~New Window in a Window~

~Back to the Same Old Same Old~

Sixth item: My local theater closed for a couple of years and when it reopened in August, it had become a luxury theater, recliners and everything! (Linda, I can't believe it!)  I may go see Sully alone. I will not eat in a restaurant alone, but I will attend a movie all by myself. Do you?

Seventh: This torture has gone on way too long...later!

  1. I've gone to movies by myself and even ate in restaurants by myself as I often went on business trips with hubby and if he had a business dinner I would dine alone. I would bring a newspaper or a magazine or travel brochure and read while I ate. I'd also slyly people watch--it was entertaining!

I've been away from my computer lately on a little blog break, Vee. We did a bit of local travel and many things with the grandchildren. Now autumn has arrived and the aspens are turning colors and the temperatures are getting cooler--it is my favorite season!

  2. Hi Vee, Sorry to hear about your back. Our weather is still warm but I sure am looking forward to cooler temps. How fun to be able to watch the grandsons play soccer. I hope you'll enjoy your "leaf tour." We, also, are looking forward to a drive thru the mountains to see fall color. Hope you feel better. Have a good Monday. xo

  3. Even though I have my camera with me, when something exciting or picture worthy happens, I don't get it in time. I have to dig in my purse and try to find the camera and by that time it's all over. It's getting much cooler here too. Time to take out the air conditioners. I have gone to movies by myself and also eaten in restaurants. Especially when I was working and no one had the same lunch that I did. Also when I went to San Francisco with my boyfriend and he had meetings all day. I wandered the whole city by myself and ate alone. I really don't mind it. I just have something to read.

  4. I eat by myself or usually a minion (young person-fellow college student tags along) everyday. It doesn't bother me to go places by myself. Sorry about your back, I hope you get to feeling better.

It is currently 45* here in western NY and I have missed you, Vee. Smiles

  6. Not a chance of you becoming dull as sawdust, Vee. It's always a pleasure to see a new post from you. I feel for you with your back injury. My back hasn't been the same since my trip to California.
I'm glad to hear that you've been able to get away with your SIL and friend. The leaf peeping trip sounds wonderful. I'm secretly hoping the camera makes it on that trip :).
Your window within a window is just as cute as can be. What a clever idea! Did you find the window during your Ponderosa clean up?
I have not been to a movie alone. I have, however, eaten out alone.

    1. I found the eight-paned window there and knew immediately that John had probably rounded it up for gifting to me. (We were always looking for charming, old windows for my decorating schemes.) Alas, it didn't work for my purpose as it was just large enough to get in the way of operating the window. I'll keep my thinking cap on. Thanks for stopping by, Kim!

    2. I can count! Twelve-paned window...

  7. Hmmm....I never thought being as boring as sawdust! That is too funny! I hope it's not true! We normally had our first snowfall by Halloween in our little New England village...too early for me! Yes, go to the movie alone, put your feet up, with a box of popcorn and enjoy this wonderful, wonderful movie! Hugs Vee!

  8. Your big hanging basket of flowers is gorgeous! And I'll be happy to get out the flannel shirts soon! Have a good week sweet friend. Hugs, Diane

  9. I forget my camera a lot too Vee. My grands got annoyed by my taking their photos so I quit on that one except for special occasions. Your window and yard look lovely. What a wonderful hanging plant.

  10. I went to a movie by myself once. The King's Speech. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Makes me want to do it again. lol That time it happened because I was waiting for a hairdresser to fit me in.
Hope your back is feeling better again soon.

  11. Not a chance of my being bored on a visit with you. In fact, it's the little things that make life what it is. I love your new picture, and I love that it is flannel shirt weather, and I love your window in a window, even if was only temporary!

Do go see Sully. You'll be glad you did.

  12. Vee
First, I like your new photo! It's feel so good to have a comfortable shirt on these Fall days.
Don't beat yourself up for not having your camera. It's just great that you are out with friends and family having a good time.
I also like you have decorated your mantel and windows.
I pray for you everyday, Vee. I'll add your back to the list now.

  14. I have also forgot my camera many a time. I do dine alone and would go to the movie alone if it was a matinee. You look cute in your flannel shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would probably go to the movies alone as hubby would rather stay home and watch Netflix and I have eaten in restaurants by myself many times - of course not a fancy one.
How about standing the window on end somewhere and if there are no panes in it, display napkins and/or doilies?
Be careful with your back, we're not spring chickens anymore and just a morning of gardening today has mine giving me grief. Yoga helps immensely.

  16. I love your window in a window idea. It looks really pretty with the scarf for privacy, and the lampshade with the doily. It certainly has cooled off here too and I'm back to wearing my winter wardrobe around the house already. No more bare feet in sandals or bare arms and legs. :( Makes me sad as I'm cold all the time. I don't like dining alone and never go to the theatre but your theatre sounds very comfy with those new seats. Interesting concept. Still no contractor here. :( I hope your tired and sore back gets some rest.

  17. You are certainly not dull as sawdust although you may feel that way. I like the window in front of the window. Is that fabric something I gave you? Can't remember. I'm loving loving loving the fall weather. Did I mention I love fall weather. I like the doily over the lamp, reminds me of the time (I was a child) I took the lampshade off and draped fabric over the lightbulb for ambiance in my room. I think I was 5 years old, and quickly learned that was not such a good idea. Thankfully our home was spared a serious outcome.

  18. Vee you are not dull as sawdust! That's just too funny. Life is full of minutia that I find very interesting. Hopefully readers of my blog feel the same.
Do take care of your back, dear Vee. All the work you've been doing probably set you up for that one.
Heat on already? Goodness. Please take your camera with you as you go leaf peeping! I would love to see your colorful beauty. ♥

  19. You aren't dull, I always look forward to hearing from you. I take a lot fewer photos than I used to, and also have had less to blog about. Sometimes that's just the way it goes. As long as you're having some fun, don't worry about the pictures. Do you know I once read that you actually remember less of an event if you take a lot of pictures? At any rate, I hope your back feels better, that is the WORST. Any time I have wrenched my back I have been completely useless until it was better. Sending hugs.

  20. I do go to movies alone and eat alone when hubby is traveling. I thought I was the dullest person on the planet and I'm sure I have you beat! I always forget my camera and rely on my daughter to take photos of the grands and share with me:-) Sending hugs my friend and enjoy your peeping!

  21. Oh Vee, I just wrote a post and exited out without clicking on "publish". How dull is that? I realized what I'd done when I left your blog. So, here I am again. For the first time in months, I have a week with only one meeting and I can't get motivated. I need to make use of this quiet time...maybe tomorrow. Your yard looks great and so do you. I love the window in front of the window. You are always very creative. I remember my camera, but forget to post the pictures. I sure hope you remember yours when you go look at fall colors. We were just talking about finding time to fly to NY city, rent a car and go up your way to see the autumn leaves. It might be next year, but it's a plan and the first thing I said was, "We've got to stop and meet Vee!"

  23. You aren't dry at all. You are just weary which is understandable! I think you should go to the cinema alone and to restaurants and do it soon! I know someone who has been alone for quite a few years now and she never goes out because she is alone and it is so sad. So don't get like that. Go out, on your own, with girlfriends or with a good book! A good book is a cheap date and you don't have to share your popcorn or your dessert with it! xx

  24. Haven't had any injuries during the last month. Knocking on wood now! : )
Not cold enough here yet for the pellet stove to be on.
Your little peeping trip sounds nice. : )
I've been to a movie once by myself and out to eat once by myself. Didn't like either one.

  25. Well we hit 107 today so NO flannel shirts over here. How I would love some real Fall weather. I love you window within a window! I have gone to the movies by myself, and I have gone to restaurants by myself as well...no problem with it at all. OH, and as for my most recent "odd' injury....I burnt my finger with hot glue, and then flung it off of me (it was a hair bow) and it landed on my foot and burnt it too. And by the time I rolled back in my chair and got down to it to pull it off, it was almost sticking to my foot! Too much glue? lol Hope your back is feeling better soon. Boring Vee? Not in ANY way. Have a good week!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Boring? Never! I'd rather go to a movie alone than to a restaurant. But I've never done the first and have done the second! Love that flannel shirt, and I hope your back soon feels better.

  27. Vee, I got such a kick out of your post. Loved the pictures too. I enjoy the movies by myself. We have a little theater in Old Town Monrovia that reminds me of the theater in the Movie "The Majestic"

You are not as dull as sawdust....sawdust can be delightful to the lumber jack. HaHa

  28. Hi Vee, I'm back from my blog hiatus. It was a short and very HOT summer. I will be so happy to see flannel shirt weather! Your hanging basket is lovely and I like your window arrangement. Now I will get back to the debate which has just started. I didn't think I'd watch...it makes me nervous...but I will try!

  29. Go see Sully. Excellent movie, loved it. I hate to dine alone. But I will go to a favorite place and get my meal to go. I forget to take photos, too. My phone is a pain and the battery dies so quickly. And I don't like lugging around the iPad.

    ReplyDelete
  30. oh i can understand your guilt dear forgetting camera specially on worthy occasions cause anxiety later ,but hey it's ok there are many precious moment to come and you will be there to capture them surely

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am terrible with the camera too missing lots of wonderful photo opportunities. I often have a meal out on my own when I have been on a shopping trip, take a magazine or a book with you it stops unwanted conversation. I love the window décor, such a neat idea.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Vee! I hope your back is feeling better by now. I once hurt mine just by making my bed! I've never gone to a movie alone, but I wouldn't mind doing so. As for eating alone in a restaurant, I have done that, but much rather ordering and bringing home. Hope you have a happy week!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh boy, I totally understand about forgetting your camera, luckily my phone takes decent photos, and you're definitely not dull.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love this post! Full of fun! I have never gone to a movie by myself but I certainly would. I haven't seen Sully. Maybe I should come up and see it with you! Wouldn't that be fun? I'm sorry about your back. I'm glad to hear of your leaf peeping trip, I love those! I have eaten in a fast food restaurant by myself a few times. I usually have something to read with me.

Maybe you and your friends would like to do a road trip to Lancaster one day! Wouldn't that be fun! You could time it for our Fall Fest! Tim gives the best hay rides!

  35. Well, don't you look delightful in your flannel shirt :) I love this time of year since I get to wear knee high boots, cardigans, and scarves. It's been quite cold here in the mornings and evening and we've even enjoyed a fire or two in our wood burning stove.

Take care, dear Vee, and I hope your back is feeling better. Hugs to you!

  36. Hi Vee,

I love seeing the picture of you! Flannel shirt weather indeed! :) Your hanging plant is GORGEOUS -- mine never look that good. I think your same old-same old in the window is still very pretty. I'm sorry you wrenched your back; I've discovered that back injuries often come from the smallest, most innocuous-seeming things -- just a slight movement the wrong way and "Ouch". I can't remember if I've ever been to a movie alone, but I have been to a restaurant alone; I take a book when I do that.

It's always good to see a post from you, dear Vee. Have a good week!

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor

  37. Hope your back feels better soon, Vee! A sore back is the worst. I would absolutely go to a movie or dinner by myself. The more often you do it, the more comfortable you will feel. Maybe you could put a large note on the door to your garage "Take Camera" :-)

  38. Bad back HURTS. Hope it gets better soon Dear Vee. Oh girl...you have on a flannel shirt? I wish I had a tad of the cooler weather though I hear it's suppose to cool up by Friday! Oh I hope so!!! Well, I won't go to eat or to the movies alone. I guess I could. But then I haven't been to the movies in so long till not even sure what the HIGH price is these days. Last time I did go was with my girls and I thought I was going to have to take out a loan to get into the movies and buy a diet coke and popcorn. Hope you have a great week Vee. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  39. Well, you may consider yourself sawdust but your great way with words makes anything you may think is boring enjoyable to read. I really like your window within a window and the cozy vignette you have set up is lovely...and I see you do that doily-on-the-lampshade thing too...love it! Yes, I would probably go to the movie alone (but I never have) and no, I wouldn't eat in restaurant alone. And speaking of Sully, I am hoping that we get a chance to see it this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  40. You are so funny... dull as a sawdust, lol... love that line! I may need to remember it and use it {smiles} Actually, I found your post very entertaining. I love your window, and it is definitely flannel weather here, especially in the mornings! Have fun leaf peeping, and whether you remember your camera or not, I hope you have a wonderful time :)

  41. I heard your voice all the way until the British expletive, and then Winston Churchill kicked in. Anyway, it's so annoying to forget ones camera. I've done it too often. I'm sorry you wrenched your back. You're working too hard. I hope it feels better soon. I wish our theater were a luxury one. I've not yet seen Sully, but intend to soon. It would be a good day to do it, rainy weather and all, but my brother and wife are here and they've already seen it. There I go, talking about the weather. Actually, doesn't everyone talk about the weather? Take care of that back.

  42. You are NOT as dull as sawdust. You look adorable in your flannel shirt, and I hope your back is feeling better. Sometimes it seems the most persistent back pain comes from the simplest things like just turning the wrong way or lifting something incorrectly.

Most recent injury (not sure how strange or weird it is, but it's something I've not done before) came from losing my balance and falling down part of the cellar stairs (about four steps, if my accident reconstruction estimate is correct). The strangest thing about it is that my left leg (which got the worst of it, though my right elbow and left arm took hits as well) was already swollen when I hit the ground, indicating that one injury occurred en route. Things are slowly healing ... this was a week and a half ago.

Love all of your decor, indoors and out -- and isn't that window a stunner? Sweet to remember that John was thinking of you all the time.

  43. Great photos from when you did remember the camera :-) We are enjoying autumn as well, still a quite hot and no rain in sight, but definitely autumn.

  44. Do remember that camera on your leafy excursion. I do go to restaurants alone when I travel with Dear when he has conferences. I don't think I've ever gone to a theater alone. I've yet to go to a luxury theater. Love your sawdust post and photos.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I LOVE going to movies and eating in restaurants alone...LOVE..IT..!
We have some really fancy theaters here in our large town..One, has little tables in front of your seats and you order dinner and eat and watch the movie..only been there a couple times and I just love it..Mr. Sweet says their expensive burgers aren't very good..ha...(ain't THAT a man for ya..)

  46. back by to say I hope your back is getting better...

  47. I love a movie and have gone to many all by myself. This started when I was separate from my now ex husband and every single Friday night after I got off work, I would go to the Dollar movie theater and see the older 'new' movies. I still remember the very first one I saw -Elf and it was in 2004 I think.
Sorry about your back! That's what happened to Summer. She was taking a nap on the sofa in her office during her lunch hour and was turning over. Who knew it would be the simple innocent moves that could hurt so much?
