A Haven for Vee

You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me, Lucille

At Christmastime, I was gifted with a lovely box of goodies that included a spiral ham. I am the only one in the family who likes ham so it was not served for Christmas dinner.

I decided to have a Christmas dinner for my sisters-in-law and a friend. I finally got around to it last Thursday. Yes, it was May 3. Pitiful.

I made a cherry glaze for the ham. It just sounded so good at Pinterest. It will go down in history as a major fail.

What was I thinking?!

After not cooking much of anything for two years, it was an ambitious dinner. My menu: ham, baked potatoes, Olive Garden style salad, green bean casserole, creamed corn, Parker House rolls, and Refrigerator Sheet cake with ice cream.

Nothing went quite as planned. The ham was dry, the baked potatoes were steamed, the rolls did not rise properly, and the ice cream was soup. That's right. Soup!

Apparently, the compressor on my fridge gave up the ghost.

Now, instead of a lovely almond color Amana with a bottom freezer, I have an old-lady white Frigidaire with an everyday top freezer. I couldn't justify having anything more.

Some days!

  2. Good morning, Vee!! I'm so sorry about your fridge! We have an Amana in our kitchen, too; it's 22 years old. Ours is the old lady kind, though, with freezer on top. ;) I seriously dread the day when it dies, because anything taller will mess up our cabinets, and they're always changing the sizes on these new appliances.

I love the title of your post; I haven't thought of that song in forever! :D I hope you have a good day, my friend.

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor

    1. Wow! Twenty-two years old! Mine was only 15 years old, but serviceman said not worth putting that kind of money in.

  3. I does sound like it would be delicious! My major fail, long before Pinterest was a "Luscious Peach Pie"...not so much, and it goes down in Schneider familly history as that awful pie Teresa made. Glad to see your blog pop up in my feed again!

  4. Oh dear! Appliances do eventually give out and it seems there is always some sort of catastrophe involved... The freezer is ALWAYS full of food when it dies, company coming for dinner when stove or fridge dies, etc. Hope you managed with what you had,and had a laugh about it besides.
SO thrilled to see you posting again. Do hope you will continue, even if only occasionally. I miss you !!

  5. With 4 hungry children and a crop in the field. I am sorry your fridge gave up the ghost! I have made some Pinterest recipes that look really good in the picture but major fails on the plate!

  6. So happy to see this post, Vee, even if it is documenting a Pinterest fail. It was indeed an ambitious menu!! Somehow, I imagine that you all enjoyed good fellowship around the table anyway and that you enjoyed the menu items which *did* cooperate.

    Have a happy day!

  7. I've had days like that, but I'm sure they enjoyed visiting with you anyway and appreciated all your hard work. Hugs!

  8. Awwww Vee, I'm so sorry that things didn't go well for your belated Christmas dinner. I just hate it when things sound so goo, and end up a major fail. Too bad about the fridge, too. I'm sure it was nice being together with your guests, though, and I'm sure that they appreciated you.

  9. I had some cooking mishaps this weekend, too. Of course, it's the thought that counts, right? (or so we are told)

  10. Well, let me just say that your intentions were certainly the best and the meal you planned sounded wonderful...sorry it didn't go according to plan. We've all been there in one degree or another. Those appliances really do pick the worst times to "leave" us. I went from "almond" to black but when we finally get our farmhouse built, I plan on going back to white...as vintage-y looking as possible. :)

  11. Awe Vee, sometimes dear lady things just don't go like we planned for them too. Most often, that's a lot for me! LOL! One year my baby girl wanted chicken and dumplings for her birthday dinner. I had bought this brand new pot so decided I would use it for my chicken and dumplings. I worked hard that morning getting my dumpling made as I have made many times before. Of course I was excited about using my new pot you know. I am sure you guess what happened right? YEP, they burnt! My whole house smelled like burnt chicken and dumplings for two days. I cried as I pour out the whole pot of food. And then I got mad! Needless to say the new pot became a beat with the hammer pot and went to the dump. NOPE I did not pray and ask God to forgive me either from my going off the deep end. I just beat the crap out that pot! Hoping this gave you a laugh today dear Vee. Good to see you back. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Don't let that stop you doing it again, though, Vee!!! But I hurt for you. You had such wonderful ambition and I say bah, boo and hiss to it not working well for you.

Big hugs and lots of love being sent to you today. xxoo

  13. We've been babying our fridge for several years now. For one, they are very expensive, and two, we had other priorities. When it can no longer be repaired, we'll get a new one, and I want one with the freezer on the bottom.

    Sorry about your meal.

  14. I feel so bad! I hope this doesn't stop you from making a grand meal again!

  15. Vee!!!!! Regardless of the mishaps, I bet it was still a goodtime, smiles. I would rather enjoy the company anyway. So happy to see you.

  16. I'm so glad to see your post today!
Appliances always leave us at the most inopportune times. Last year we had to replace our dishwasher and washing machine. Then the refrigerator started leaking! We were able to fix that, but now the ice maker doesn't work. Our's is 21 years old so I imagine it won't be long before it leaves us. ♥

  17. Is there ever a good time for your fridge to go? I don't understand why they don't live forever, they certainly cost enough! I am sure the effort was well appreciated, besides, it's not the food on the table that is important, it's the friends around it :)

  18. Dear Vee,
I have many days like you have described here where absolutely nothing I do turns out right! I have made meals that were colossal fails!!! My new rule is never to try new recipes on guests!!! Pinterest has only let me down once....at any rate I am so happy to see you here. I saw your last post as I mentioned on IG and tonight I found this post....have a good week Vee!

  19. Oh dear. I hate Pinterest fails . . . especially when company is coming. But don't let it discourage you! I am sure that your guests were honored to be invited and I'll bet that good times were enjoyed.

Hope your new fridge meets your needs and lasts a good long while! The nerve of Lucille, leaving you at an inopportune time. You don't need her in your life. ;)

  20. Hi Vee!

I have had so many, Pinterest fails! They look good, they sound good, and usually the photos are amazing, but in reality...eeekkk! I think the worst one we ever tried was something called, poor mans lobster. It included cauliflower and Old Bay seasoning...nuff said. Bob tried eating it, and even tried to be polite about the taste, but it was just too much, pretty soon, it was in the garbage and we were at Wendy's!

We had to buy a new fridge a few years ago and the salesman told us that a new fridge would only last 10 years. That old lady fridge will be perfect...my old lady fridge is just plugging along as good as a new expensive fridge.

So good to see you today!!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

  21. Delighted to see you on your blog again after all this time. We're happy to have you back. Had a wee chuckle at your old lady fridge comment. At the very least, cooking mishaps can make for good blog fodder, and sure 'nuff.

  22. My dryer died last week. I'm drying at the laundromat for awhile. I learned the hard way that spiral hams only need a warm up.

  23. Hello dear Vee.
Sorry about the failure of pinterest and the not so old fridge! Yikes. I hope ours hangs in there until we sell and move on with it remaining here. Not too selfish...eh? Happy to read a post by you again.

  24. It's never easy to give something up and get a new one. We just had to get a new microwave but it is SO much better. Our old one didn't have a turntable. lol Yes it was that old and that cheap. Hope your afternoon in nice. I'm so happy just hanging out with you for a little while. Lots and lots of hugs, Diane

  25. Assuming this isn't the "very good news indeed" previously promised :)
It is delightful to find your occasional post! My favorite color for appliances is white. We bought the GE Artistry series when we moved. Very basic, very economical with a classic look and white. No bells and whistles and I couldn't be more pleased!

  27. I had meals turn out like that the worst one was when i cooked christmas dinner and left the bag that was used to keep the chicken dry in the baking dish and didn't find it until everything was cooked.

  30. I am just delighted to be able to pop over and visit with you. I have had more Pinterest fails with cooking than good. Well actually with not just cooking...it seems Pinterest always makes things seem easier and better than real life:) Not sure why I bother with Pinterest other than eye candy browsing.
AS for the fail...gave you something good to write about that was REAL life. I am sure they forgave you.

  31. I think it's great you planned such a delicious meal. A fridge disaster in the middle of such an endeavor sounds dreadful. I don't mind melted ice cream--a bit like a milkshake !

  32. Dear Spammer,

Stop trying! Your comments are going directly to the garbage file.

  33. So I finally got around to reading blogs...and what a pleasant surprise to see a new post here. First off, my condolences about your fridge. Oh dear! My appliances are all getting to that age where I expect the same will happen to me one day. And then trying to find something that will fit into the allotted space is not easy either.

Your menu sounded fabulous! SO sorry things never turned out as you hoped...though I am suspecting it was not nearly SO bad and your guests had a wonderful and enjoyable meal at your table!

  34. I am L-ing-OL (or LOLing??) at the fact that I haven't posted a blog in months and you're back at it! I am so happy to see that, at least. I am going to post one soon, and seeing that you're back has definitely given me inspiration. Seems like things might be going well for you... well, with the exception of the dinner and need for new fridge. I continually tell my hubby that "things" don't last... cars, dishwashers, fridges, washers, plumbing, etc. You name it, and we've dealt with it over the past few years. But the Lord continues to provide for our needs (and even many of the "wants"). Happy May 19th! :)

  35. Oh dear Vee! Sorry to hear about your fridge - it always seems to happen at the worst time! I'll just bet your dinner was still very tasty and appreciated by your guests. My appliances are at their late season in life - eek! I'm so afraid that we won't find another fridge to fit into the allotted space in our 15 year old cupboards. So good to see your post today. Always so good to hear from you.

  36. I am so happy that you have begun to blog again. Somehow, I've always felt a strong connection to you. I think it is because you share a lot of yourself when you blog. You become real! Thank you for your kind comments on my blog, btw. Be well. May all your appliance troubles be swiftly resolved, and your future dinner parties be easier and more pleasing to you. I'm just going into needing a lot of work done on my car, and I can't imagine it will be too inexpensive!

  37. I am just now seeing your post. So happy to see an update. At Christmas, I saw a good ham recipe and made it for just us as a special treat.....it was horrible! We've moved a few times and now have a tiny, cheap black frig - it shows dust so bad. I wish I had white. I got tires on my car yesterday and was shocked at the price - everything is high! Have a lovely day. xo

  38. I love your honesty about the dinner! Bless your heart! Been there and done that! One Easter long ago when Amber and Mike were living in Houston, they came home for Easter dinner. Just the two of them. I don’t remember why the whole family wasn’t there but it was the the best. Our dinner was a total fail! Hame was burned. Vegetables were ruined and there was nothing - not one thing - rpthat could be salvaged from that mess! Amber and Mike went to the pantry, fridge and freezer and proceeded to cook up and serve a fairly decent meal. As far as I can remember, that’s the first, last and on,y time we have managed to completely ruin an entire meal!

  39. Refrigerator woes are the worst! We bought a new one for our basement as our old was chugging loudly, and we have been surprised that our electric bill went down, so it was well worth it! I often make spiral ham and I usually just use a honey and pineapple glaze for it in the last half hour of cooking when I take the aluminum foil off. Try that next time.
