Staying Busy

Abby tells me that it pleases her that I am sewing. I like to please Abby.

When I saw this log cabin quilt block at Dori's The Red Feedsack, I thought: I can do that! Not like Dori. Ohhhh no, but at my level and with my fabric scrap options. (By the way the very outer green-gold color is my ironing board.)

I'm not making a quilt like Dori is. I am turning this into a pot holder for myself. Practice quilt blocks always turn into pot holders and always for myself.

💛💛💛

Tuesday, I visited my daughter taking her lunch, though she did not eat much. Sometimes it is a challenge selecting food for other people. Laurel is a cat lady as you can tell.

Who else has a sign with their pets' names on it? Probably a few...

Laurel's new desk arrived and Charlie really loves it.

I don't know how she gets any work done. Note the kitty bed on the desk to the left.

What kind of grandmother would I be to leave out Charlotte? Hi, Charlotte! Charlotte likes nothing better than to burrow under the blankets. She's not much of a people person kitty.

Later in the afternoon, I took supper to my sister-in-law. She didn't eat much either. We had a lobster roll and the first ice cream of the season. She thought that coffee ice cream with hot fudge sauce sounded good. It was. She was going to eat her leftovers today.

💛💛💛

Today's project is to finish decorating my sister Kim's dining room. Her new to her hutch has been placed and she wants to style it. I'm going to sit in a chair and nod and say, "that looks good." Perhaps next time I pop in, I'll have the finished room to share.

Kim has her grandson for the weekend and I have one of mine for an overnight this weekend so more projects coming right up. Oh and my grandsons passed along all their Thomas the Trains with all the accouterments to her grandson who is just 16 months old. I'm delivering them this morning.

Oh he's going to love those trains!

  1. It looks like I (who have dropped off the comment scene during this hectic season) will be your first commenter. :)

Potholders are a good practice. You have fun piecing, don't get tired of it, and you have a little something practical to show for it. Love Laurel's new desk as well as the fact that there is a cat bed on it. You were an ambassador of good will, delivering meals to your peeps!

Your sister's room is looking wonderful! I know that darling little guy will enjoy the trains! There's just something about Thomas . . .

    Happy April to you!!

  2. Did you know that poor Thomas has fallen highly out of favor in the years since my grandsons loved him so? Something about gender and morality—a sign of these diseased times, I suppose. Thanks for popping in, Cheryl!

    1. I did NOT know that! My grandchildren loved Thomas too. They sort of outgrew him and transferred their affections to Legos. But I had no idea that Thomas had fallen out of favor. How sad.

    2. Oh my goodness, I didn't realize that either! My grandsons adored Thomas and one of them still talks about him and his adventures. How silly he has fallen out of favor.
      Love the quilted piece, Vee.
Your sisters new hutch is really a handsome piece. Her dining room is looking lovely.

    3. I did not know that. It seems sad. All of my grandsons have loved Thomas somewhere along the way.

  3. You HAVE been staying busy indeed! Love the quilt block. I wish I had more time to quilt - it's my favourite thing to do! It's "sew" satisfying! Lots of decorating going on over there - so nice! Such a nurturing gesture to deliver meals - I'm sure they were very much appreciated.

  4. Do I get some time with the trains too? They are such fun! Sounds like you'll be busy in the days to come with family...and that's always good! We have workers here today for some home improvements...wish us luck! heehee! Hugs!

  5. I love the way the sailboat is framed by all of those pretty fabrics in your quilt square. How nice of you to share meals with your family members. Must admit that sundae does sound yummy. Charlotte look very comfy under the blankets :). One of my co-workers has 12 cats. She says she never wanted to be a crazy cat lady, but has a soft spot for the strays who seem to know where she lives :). Your sister's dining room is looking so nice. Hope you'll be sharing how the new hutch shapes up. Oh, the possibilities. Sounds like Thomas has found a wonderful new home.

  6. Indeed, you are a busy lady, my dh says "a busy person is a happy person", ~wink~.
Yesterday my daughter saw the teacup coaster you made for me, and thought it was so lovely, I think of you when I see it,and smile. The hutch i am adoring it is so lovely, you and your sister have fun decorating.
Cats are so unpredictable, we have had several, and enjoyed them so much, since losing our dog, Jack, last Aug. we haven't had the heat to look for another companion.
Those grand boys of yours are so giving, just like their grandmother, and sweet too!
    Love,
    Sue

  7. Thomas is a big deal in our area as the local historic railroad has Thomas weeks throughout the year. People fly in from around the world for these events! We still have all of Nate and Kyle's Thomas train stuff.

You were sweet to take meals to people. It can be tricky to know what they like but the fact that you made the effort to show them love means the world to them, I'm sure!
I love the size of Laurel's desk!

Your quilt square is very nice, and will make a perfect potholder. I haven't sewn in ages. I'll get back to it one day.

  8. How lovely to pop in with meals, the lobster and ice cream sound delicious. Love the pot holder, always a great addition to the kitchen. How wonderful to pass down the Thomas train set, I am sure that gorgeous little one will love it.

  9. Love your log cabin pot holder. I may have to make some for myself. I need new pot holders. All the other photos are wonderful, too. Those trains will continue to be loved, I'm sure. And I hope we see the hutch when it is finished. I had no idea Thomas was less popular. We still have the Thomas train on our Cuyahoga Valley tracks in the summer and I think it is well attended....I certainly hope so.

  11. I like the fussy cut sailboat in the centre of your block. It will make a great potholder! Thomas has been a favourite with our grandchildren, too. Who on earth could possibly object? No need to answer that rhetorical question! We live in crazy times. Have fun nodding at your sister as she styles her cabinet. Your family must love to see you coming knowing that good food and good conversation is near at hand.

  12. I'm more than happy to see you sewing again, I'm thrilled. I have a few of those potholders/mug rugs that you've made me. Love them. Like the new desk, sister's living room decor, and the nephew picture. My two grands who spend the night frequently won't come without the other. Thanks for all the newsy updates. ~ Abby

  13. You sound happily busy and a fresh new hotpad can lift the spirits! Love the small details in life.
It is challenging to take meals to people--maybe not as you were speaking, but taking them to young families is challenging with all the eating specifications these days. Have fun with that hutch styling!

  14. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate fresh, new hotpads. I can't bear to toss the ones my dear Aunt Irene made me umpteen years ago, but they're nasty!

  15. I love the ways you are staying busy! Creativity with the quilting, benevolence with the good for your sister in law, and spending precious time with your daughter and sister! Win! WIN!! It’s always a good thing to do something for ourselves as well as for others!

  16. Yes, you've been a busy girl! I am loving your choice of prints and colors for your darling hot pad. As good as that looks, I'd say you nailed it and it looks like it could certainly build a quilt around it, practice or not. :) A lump under the covers on a bed is very familiar sight around my place...only it's canine, not feline...with a long snout! There's that pretty dining room again...

  17. I don't even have an excuse to make pot holders ... I have so many brand new handmade ones that I found in my mother's linen closet stash! Many were made by my great aunt Mabel and I think next time there is a family reunion, I'll take them along and offer them to cousins.

Like Abby, I am beyond thrilled to see you sewing! Your pot holder is going to be lovely and I do love the sailboat at the center. I would love to do some small projects like that if I can ever eke out the time.

Is that a love seat Laurel is using as a desk chair? Inquiring minds need to know!

And what a wonderful blessing you are to your sister-in-law! A lobster roll and ice cream! On Sunday evening we went out to dinner with friends and my meal included a small sundae. That's just the combination I picked: coffee ice cream with hot fudge sauce.

Kim's dining room ... swoon. It is beautiful and just perfect in that room, but I am over wallpaper for my own house. Be sure and post pics of the hutch!

  18. I'm loving your quilt block, which will make a beautiful potholder. I like the idea of nodding and telling someone if something looks good! I look forward to seeing the decorated hutch. Yes, Kim's grandson will love the train. How nice of your grandsons to pass the train along. Enjoy the rest of your week, Vee!

  19. I have that same ironing board cover in green! That's a beautiful quilt block. I like her new desk. You're so sweet taking meals to them. The ice cream sounds delicious. Love the hutch. Enjoy your time with your grandson.

  20. Oh Dear, I didn't know Thomas had fallen out of favor either. I still think the trains are cute and our littlest enjoys them. Love the future hot pad and all the meals and 'decorating' you're doing ;-)

  22. Vee, I love your pretty quilted pot holder. It could be a wall hanging, it's so nice. What a sweet thing your grand passing his toys to another. My grandson passed his ninja turtles to a young neighbor once and made that boy's day. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  23. I like your quilt block. Much better than I could ever do! My Mom was a quilter. Loving the hutch.

  24. I'm glad to see you are sewing too, Vee! Potholders are useful and a great way to use up some scraps. Quick and easy and done! :)
I chuckled when I saw Charlie's "bed" on her computer desk. One of my kitties seems to be very jealous when I spend "too much time" om the computer; he jumps up and sits in front of the screen as if to say "HEY! Pay attention to ME!!"
Looking forward to the dining room new decor reveal....
A lobster roll and icecream sounds like the perfect meal to me... Coffee icecream is my favourite, but I like it topped with nuts, preferably toasted almonds. Of course a little chocolate on top wouldn't hurt either... :)
Have fun with the boys this weekend!!

  25. Hi Vee~

What a cute quilt block! I've always wanted to learn how to quilt, and Doris is so good at explaining every step...I might even be able to make one!! I love the boat in the middle of yours.

The dining room is so pretty!! I love the hutch, I'll be waiting for "after" photos! Lunch with two people you love is always a good thing, and I adore cats! Have a wonderful week-end, Vee!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

  26. I'm so behind on visiting and commenting. It looks like you are filling your days with good things. My sewing skills are very dismal. I like the idea of using scraps to make that pattern and using the square for a pot holder. The log cabin pattern is cool. How nice that Thomas can be handed down and enjoyed for a few more years. I've never had a lobster roll. I really need to visit your part of our country and gain even more weight. :) I love to have the roll of sitting and giving a thumbs up or thumbs down on decorating options. Hope you have a good weekend!

  27. Sewing is one thing that I don't do. I am impressed with your quilt block. Very Nice!
    Really like the hutch!
How nice of your grandsons to pass along their trains.

  28. My last cat liked to sit on my lap while I was on the computer. Actually, he liked to sit on my lap all the time! He was a very affectionate cat.

IT's nice your grandsons can pass on their well-loved Thomas Trains to your sister's grandson!

  29. Hi Vee,

It's nice when your pets can come to work with you. :D Our son's roommate has a cat, but the cat seems very attached to our son, and vice versa.

I would love to have a lobster roll!! A few places serve them around here, but so far, I haven't managed to snag one. I hear they're delicious!

I like your quilt block potholder; I really need to give sewing another try. It's inspiring to see what other people make. I hope you have a great weekend, Vee, and take care of yourself!!

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor
