A Haven for Vee

The Puds

This probably goes without saying, but dental pain is the puds. So many have been asking about me and my being under the weather, hence this post.

* tooth began aching last Thursday
* jaw began swelling on Sunday
* called dentist and he said that I would need to be on antibiotics for ten days before he could help
* daughter took me to my doctor nurse practitioner Monday afternoon (Obamacare for ya)
* now on antibiotics for ten days

I know that Naproxen works well for dental pain; however, I am allergic to it. I tried all the usual remedies including Thieves, oil of cloves, peppermint, and vanilla. Sometimes they help. They did not in my case.

Riding to the dentist, I was chatting a bit with my daughter and sharing my concerns. I am so glad that she and my son have had excellent dental health benefiting from fluoride and regular dental visits. My sister and I, on the other hand, have been working hard to keep our teeth. I told Laurel that I have been feeling very self-conscious about my teeth for a long time and that it actually prevents me from smiling and being myself. She said, "But, Mom, sometimes the most beautiful smile comes from a person with no teeth."

What?! Well she made me laugh and she may have a point.

In the meantime, I look a lot like this...

and I can prove it!

Thank you so much for praying for me. I'll be glad when I can say that all this is a thing of the past.

My apologies for any strange comments you have been receiving from me. I claim this: I have not been myself. ☺

See you next week!

  1. Bless your heart!!! Dental pain is AWFUL!!! I have a long history with dental pain - early in my life! My teeth were so bad when I was a child that by the time I was 18, I had lost all but NINE teeth! Now I have only six left that are 'real!'
Amber is going to the dentist tomorrow for some fillings. I shall pray for you both!!

  6. Toothaches are not for the faint of heart. And....dental costs are through the roof....I always wonder why dental care has not improved yet the costs keep rising? Poor Vee...I do so hope you get relief asap! Hugs...your post was a good laugh however!!

  7. I am glad to see that despite the pain you are dealing with, your sense of humor is still intact.
Dental pain is awful and makes it hard to keep your mind on much else. I hope the antibiotics are beginning to do their job and the pain will soon be a thing of the past.

  8. Well you have my sympathies for sure....dental pain is just the pits that's for sure. I have been fairly fortunate in that department [one of my only departments, lol] but I did have one that needed a root canal once and I will NEVER forget the throbbing pain of the thing. I could feel it with every heart beat....boom, boom, boom.
And I had NO infection or decay. It had just broken off soo low and bad that it was right near the root. I was VERY VERY glad to finally get that done and move on let me tell you. Praying you put this all behind you soon!!

  9. Dear Vee, there is nothing I dislike more than dental pain and having work done on my teeth so I feel for you and will pray this can be relieved very soon. Every time I get a twinge in a tooth I fear the worst. I have had so much dental work all my life from fillings to root canals and crowns and my first ever extraction last fall. We have been blessed with great dental coverage over the years thankfully. It sure is expensive! Take care and I hope you will be out of the 'puds' soon! Hugs. Pam

  10. Dental pain is the worst!!! And then after all the pain, the remedy ends up costing an arm and a leg. But on that cheering note, I will pray that it all resolved soon without too much (more) pain. I've never heard of puds before.

  11. Oh Vee, that is too, too bad. I hope that you are soon pain-free and smiling again!

  12. I have also never heard of puts but it sounds like a good word for what you're feeling. So sorry and hope it all gets over with very soon.

  13. Oh, dear Vee, I hope that you are very soon on the mend! Dental pain is some of the worst! Continuing to pray for you...

  16. Oh Vee - so sorry to hear about your tooth pain - the worst kind to have! Your pictures made me laugh (love your sense of humour). Take care and get better dear!

  17. I was thinking of toothless smiles and they can be very cute on a baby, also!

But in all seriousness, I am so sorry for your pain. I agree, dental pain is the absolute worst. I have often said it's easier to have a baby than a root canal or even a crown. Can you take ibuprofen? That's what my dentist suggested after my most recent extensive (AND expensive) work was done. Many people don't know this, but you can safely take up to four of them rather than two. If you can take it, the great thing about ibuprofen is that it helps with inflammation as well as with pain. You probably know all this, but just in case ...

And, next week at this time, I will be close to actually feeling your pain -- I need to have a wisdom tooth extracted. At my age! It's a fully erupted tooth so shouldn't be too much of a job, but one never knows.

    Feel better soon, dear Vee!

  18. I had a serious sinus infection from a bad wisdom tooth and was in so much pain my entire side of my face was swollen . I went to the dentist was put on antibiotics then after they did their job I had the tooth out now I am deathly afraid of the dentist due to past bad experiences but this dentist was great fast super gentle and I did it with just freezing and didn't feel a thing in the past they had to put me out not with this dentist. To this day I am not afraid and prefer to keep tooth problems at bay at all costs never to go through that again , Our dental is covered by Papas company so we are lucky that way to . Hope you find relief and get better soon .

  19. Hi Vee~

I'm so sorry! There's nothing worse than a toothache. Dental plans on the other hand are an ache in a different area . . . oops!

I love toothless smiles. My husbands father had false teeth, but he never wore them. When he smiled it made my heart happy, he was adorable! I especially loved it when he was all decked out in his cowboy hat, old jeans and boots!

Get well soon, you will be in my prayers.

    Hugs,
    Barb

  20. Oh you poor thing!! That is no fun at all.
Toothless smiles may be cute but I'd prefer to keep all my teeth!! : )
I've been using a water pic and I tell you it makes such a big difference. It makes even cleaning time at the dentist a breeze.

  21. Oh goodness, Vee, God bless you! I'm glad you'll be on antibiotics for ten days. I've had my share of root canals, fillings, and crowns. My teeth are very a very expensive investment, and I sure hope I keep them.
Take care and prayers are with you.

  22. Oh Vee I do hope you are feeling better with all that dental pain! Oh my...I feel your heart....and have had your pain. Speaking of NO TEETH. While ministering to women in Nicaragua a young woman came in to our conference and she would barely talk and would not smile. To come to find out she had only one tooth Vee. She was 33 years old and had gotten some kind of virus that had actually rotted her teeth out and could not afford to go to the dentist. You talk about breaking my heart!!! Anyway I wanted to share. I do hope you are much, much better. I've had massive dental procedures and I can attest to the "Butt wanting to suck a lemon" just from walking in the door! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  24. Vee, You truly have my sympathy. I did not own a tooth brush till I was about ten..I do not know what our parents were thinking. God was with all us siblings growing up. I fight all the time to keep my teeth...I have enough money in them now...I should be sporting a ten thousand dollar set of dentures, instead of all the root canals, fillings and crowns. One implant even. I will pray for you even. Because I have a huge fear of the dentist chair. I can't even seem to help it. I just about become sick to my tummy when going. I sure hope and pray you get the proper help. Please, bad teeth can make you have bad health. Hugs to you, xoxo,Susie

  25. Oh my... I think a toothache is the worst pain known to man.
I've been suffering for weeks with this torn rotator cuff, therapy etc. and in no mood for blogging but I would rather have this than a toothache! Try to keep your spirits up.

  26. So sorry you are having tooth problems. I just had gum surgery 2 weeks ago and get stitches out tomorrow.Hope yours are better soon!

  27. Oh you poor thing...nothing worse in my book than tooth problems. I'm so glad it hasn't affected your sense of humor though :D I hope you get some relief soon, Vee.

  28. As one who was on Obamacare for a year, they didn't even pay for my insulin! We had great dental insurance for years but when my husband could no longer work, we lost it. He has been able to get dental work as a veteran. I now have it on my State funded insurance. I am only waiting for winter weather months to pass to make an appointment. As I type, we are under near blizzard conditions.

  33. Oh dear Vee, I am so sorry for your pain. Yikes! I hope the remedy when you finally get to the dentist is good. I will pray for you. I have a tooth that is giving me warnings. Ugh. and Pooh!

  34. My sympathies! TODAY, I called the dentist, lost a filling 2 days ago and the hole felt like the Grand Canyon. I am amazed at what they do... I got a crown, fitted and finished in 3-1/2 hours. It's called Cerac, and it is my new best friend, well... that and the dentist who is a strong christian and we had the best talks!
Even so... I pray your ordeal will soon be over.

  35. Oh Vee, how awful. I truly empathize with you. I remember all too well abscessed teeth as a child (and adult) and the pain. Days seem to go by far too fast except when you're in pain. I am praying that the antibiotics are helping the pain, too.

  36. Ouch! Dental pain is so uncomfortable and going to the dentist is an ordeal (for me, anyway). I hope the antibiotics do the trick and you'll soon be able to have whatever needed done.
    Meanwhile have a good weekend....

  37. Oh Sweet Friend....As a former dental assistant in an office that was dedicated to root canals....I feel your pain. I was a patient and I was an employee. Hoping you are back to yourself soon, but don't lose this great sense of humor. I enjoyed this post more than I should have.

  38. Oh my==dental pain is among the worse pain, Vee, so you have my sympathy and my prayers!

  39. Oh Vee, I am so, so, so sorry! Dental pain is definitely the puds {never heard that saying until now}. I've had TMJ since I was a young teen and three and a half years ago it got to the point where my jaw locked close {definitely a scary feeling when you can't open your mouth}. Anyway, I decided to bypass the surgery option and went to a special Dentist and for three and a half years he has been correcting my jaw. It's been a long and painful process, but so worth it.

I truly hope your pain subsides quickly! Praying for you, sweet Vee. Hugs!

  40. So sorry, Vee, and I will be praying for you. Toothaches and earaches both rate real high up there on my worst pain list!

  44. Oh, Vee, I hope you're feeling some comfort from the antibiotics. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this pain.

  45. I'm so sorry, sweetie! Perhaps those antibiotics have started to work by now. I had poor, nonexistent dental care as a youth, and been paying the price ever since. I have more teeth with crowns than ones without. Lost track of the number of root canals. Just got another crown last month. Ka-Ching, there's a lot of money invested in my teeth! ((((Hugs))))

  48. You definitely have my sympathy girlfriend!
I'm of the pre fluoride era too and try not to bare my teeth when I smile.
Have been going through stressful times with dental treatment and its ongoing and terribly expensive - no wonder I still need to work at 73 - no help from our government for the aged either!!!!
Take care Vee, I'll hold your hand!

  54. Oh Vee,
So sorry to read about your dental woes. I can well relate! Have an appt Thursday as a matter of fact. I too am glad that my children have had excellent dental care and no fillings. They won't have to suffer with all the dental problems we've had to deal with or the expense which is astronomical! Hope you feel better now!
