Tints of Autumn

So here I am again as promised. Just as I was about to write this post, I heard footsteps on my stairs so went in search of whomever~whatever and found my sister-in-law Mary peeking in the garage window.

That caused her to jump. She was just wondering if I was in the garage working as I have been quite often of late. One thing led to another and pretty soon we were off for lunch. We both opted for hamburgers. They were huge. I couldn't eat all of mine and she couldn't eat all of hers. Nevertheless, lunch out was a pleasant diversion.

🍁🍃🍁

Last Friday, a rainy Friday, Laurel and I took off for our annual Leaf-Peeping Day. We began by eating lunch at one of our favorite places and for the next three hours, I spent a lot of time wondering where I was. Laurel knows a lot more roads than I do.

🍁🍃🍁

...I see the sunset light flooding the river valley, the western hills stretching to the horizon, overhung with trees gorgeous and glowing with the tints of autumn--a mighty flower garden, blossoming under the spell of the enchanter, Frost...

~John Greenleaf Whittier

The softened light, the veiling haze,
The calm repose of autumn days,
Steal gently o'er the troubled breast,
Soothing life's weary cares
to rest.

~Phebe A. Holder

As long as you have a window, life is exciting.
~Gladys Taber

And all the way home again where my own view isn't so bad.

No, that is not a bottle of beer in the window. It's a pumpkin pie soda bottle...truly awful, but the bottle was too cute to leave on the shelf.

Thank you for your visit, thank you for the kind comments on yesterday's post.

🍁🍃🍁

Thus concludes October foliage posts from my corner, but don't conclude those from your own. I do love foliage reports.

Love,
Vee

  1. I hope to be in New England one fall soon. So beautiful. I think the colors stand out more on an overcast day than a sunny one.

  3. Beautiful, beautiful post, Vee! So much to be commented upon.

So happy you and Mary could go out for hamburgers! It sounds like such fun.

I am not tired of (and will never tire of) foliage photos and leaf-peeping reports. As Penny mentioned above, the colors do seem to stand out more on an overcast day. To me it's a picture of how believers are to let their light shine especially in dark times.

I think that's a view I recognize in the first 2 photos ... think I've been there with you. And all of the other photos -- just wow. I think the foliage is particularly beautiful and long-lasting this year, in spite of wind and rain. It seems God is reminding us He is still on the throne and nothing has caught Him by surprise.

Speaking of surprises, the pink hydrangeas are just lovely in the midst of all the autumn colors. And the quotes you shared are lovely too. I can see that I need to read more of Phebe A. Holder's work.

Thanks for such a glorious post! It blessed my heart today.

  4. What a beautiful day you had! So much great color!

I'm glad you had lunch out with your sister in law. That's fun.

I'll be sure to share more on my blog as our color is starting to really come in.

  6. Hi Vee~

Oh.my.goodness, those photos are just amazing! Your colors are so much more vibrant than the colors in the West! And the quotes were the perfect companions. I loved everything about this post! I'm not sure I would love pumpkin spice soda...but the bottle is cute ;0)

  8. I love every single picture of your exquisite fall foliage! None here in Texas so I doubly appreciate you sharing yours! Next year Louis Dean and I are going to do a fall foliage tour up to Arkansas! I’m going to have so much fun planning that trip. Then the next year we are planning on a train trip up the East coast!

Regarding your pumpkin soda....I try things like that and they are seldom good! But the bottles are worth keeping! Hahaha!

  9. The pictures are absolutely stunning! WOW! Those colors! God surely is the Master Painter isn't He? Sounds like a fun outing you two gals had. I've never heard of pumpkin pie soda! Sounds like something I would like. Hope you are doing well dear Vee. Always good to see a post from you. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  10. Autumn foliage is so special and you saw a lot of pretty scenes! Thanks for snapping away and sharing. I hope the colors remain after we have our Friday snow event!!

  11. Such beautiful fall color around your area of the country. Thank you for sharing. And I do love the little sailboat and other tschotchkes on your windowsills.

  12. WOW! Be still my heart! Now I remember why we like to travel North in the Fall to see the colorful trees. We'll miss that trip this year so I'm glad you are sharing your photos. How about sharing that hamburger! hahahaha! Hugs!

  13. So beautiful, Vee! Thank you for sharing the beauty of Maine with us. I miss it so much. I almost feel like I know where you were...we used to enjoy such lovely foliage rides with our kids when we would go up each October to celebrate our grandson's birthday. Everywhere we'd look it was just gorgeous!! I miss that. We had planned to go up this year, but of course covid spoiled that plan. Maine still quarantines people from Florida I think... So glad you got to get out and enjoy the view while it lasted. The view from your window isn't bad at all...very nice indeed!! Thank you!

  14. You really captured some great color photos. When I was on my cruise last fall I told myself that I just have to go back (not on the cruise) with my husband and drive up the east coast.

  15. Hi Vee,

Beautiful, beautiful foliage pictures!!! Your colors are much more vibrant than ours have been here this year. We went to the mountains Sunday, and there just wasn't much color at all. I say "2020 strikes again." At any rate, I like your picture of the pumpkins and the color of those hydrangea blossoms is gorgeous. It truly looks like a great day out for you two. :)

Thank you for sharing and have a great rest of the week!

    Hugs,

This year the colors all seem to be extra pretty.

  17. Oh what glorious photos, Vee! How nice to getaway with Laurel and do some magical leaf peeping. I also read your garage cleaning post and am impressed at your progress. I know you were wishing for more than 35 cents!!
Yes, you do have a pretty view from your window, pumpkin pie soda bottle and all!

  18. I was going to tell you with of your photos I like the best but it's absolutely impossible to narrow it down to just one. You are so blessed to have all that vibrant color in your part of the country.

As for the bottle of beer .... uh-huh. (smile)

  19. Glad to see your lovely photos of the gorgeous beauty, Vee. I love the quote by Gladys Taber--one of my favorites of hers. Sounds like you are enjoying the season very much!

  20. Glorias pictures of your beautiful country side!!! Maine is so pretty in every season but autumn is especially beautiful!

  21. Hello Vee,
Such amazing colour in your landscape these days, showing just a glimpse of the glory of our wonderful God. I never tire of seeing these kind of photos. It's cold here just now - we had a touch of frost last night and more to come over the weekend, so I don't know what that will do to the leaves left hanging on the trees.
Love the outing with hamburgers and your sister-in-law, and the other with Laurel. Such treats!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, so much beauty!! Thank you for taking us along. It was almost as good except we didn't get those ginormous hamburgers. I'll try not to think about that . . .

Really though, I'm sure you had a grand time with Laurel! Our loving Father certainly gives good gifts, and a stunning fall show is one of them!

  23. Your color is way ahead of ours Vee, and such beautiful photos of the Maine countryside.
I really miss living in New England, an earlier Fall, and longer Winter was a climate I loved, and was used to having grown up in (olde) England!
Thanks for the lovely day out with you and Laurel - glad she kept you safe and brought you home with so much beauty to share here. Never tire of autumn colors.

  24. So glad that you were able to get away from the garage and enjoy such a lovely outing. The moody skies really made the fall foliage pop. Just beautiful. Nice that Laurel is familiar with the roads and you were able to enjoy the sights from the passenger seat. Thank you for letting us tag along.

  25. I love the quotations and the photos! They remind me of the romantic aura around a bowl of clam chowder at Old Sturbridge Village one fall, the big timbers, open fire, smokey air outdoors, draft horses hitched to a wagon, etc. Thanks for the pleasant memory.

  26. Vee I am a little behind on my reading my favorites but I just want to say what beautiful scenery. I love this time of year.

  27. Wowee! What beautiful colors. And how fun that you and a friend have this annual tradition of taking a leaf peeping drive.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Those annual traditions mean a lot. It's because of the posts of the beautiful autumn colors in your area that I searched our yard and decorated the house. Thank you for the inspiration. - We still miss our tradition of making a road trip in April to look at the dogwoods and redbuds in bloom. That was in a different state and every spring we talk about how we miss it.

  29. What a wonderful tradition you and Laurel have together! So much beauty in your area to see and enjoy, and how lovely to enjoy it with lunch together too! I just loved the pictures of the old cemetery and the gorgeous trees there. So many stories lay buried there. I think your view at home is rather lovely too... and wonderful to enjoy. Winter has visited us here yesterday! So enjoy the Fall as much as you can :) It looks like an amazing year for rich colors :)

  30. Beautiful foliage, and wonderful memories being made, I have no idea what is happening to our trees this year, they are dropping without evening glowing.
I like doing things on the spare of the moment, especially these days, it seems to refresh me.
I guess true to form, 2020 is going down as a very unusual year.
I haven't blogged or even been in blogland in weeks until today, trying to finish projects outside, and still canning veggies, my fall garden is doing so well!
Your garage looks so organized, ours is a mess, I seem to postpone many things this year.

    Think of you so often,
    Love,
    Sue

  31. You are right in saying that Laurel knew the best places to see foliage. We have also been seeing so many wonderful colors on drives around our Nashua, NH, area. Cemeteries are often the best places, especially ones with lots of trees as they're not only colorful but peaceful. I spent several hours on Sunday at a nearby cemetery which has so many old trees that sadly are dying off (no pun intended). Rainy days make for great muted colors too. Thanks for sharing your day trip outing, Vee. I too will be posting more foliage pics in future posts, even though many trees are are now we still have loads of colors around, but maybe not so much after today's rain.

  32. Lovely autumn! The fall season seems to flee so quickly so it's good to take a ride to enjoy it. I think our trees never looked better than this year. Now we have much needed and much welcomed snow. I hope the snow helps the firefighters who are battling all our horrible wildfires in Colorado.

  33. Sorry for being away - been under the weather for a bit, but feeling as if I need to at least make a semblance of visiting some of my best blogging friends. Vee- how nice it is you are able to get away and enjoy lunch and leaf-peeking outings. I am so happy about that. As much as I despise and humid heat of summer and the bone-chill of winter, I wouldn't give up the colors of fall easily. It all too quickly disappears, though. We have had a pretty fall.

I laughed out loud at "no that isn't a beer bottle," as it is EXACTLY what I saw first and thought. Haha - you knew. You KNEW we would think that, haha.

    Anyway, take care. Big hugs.

  34. Just gorgeous Vee. we don't have much color in our neck of the woods yet. Temps down in the 30's tonight so maybe we'll have color soon.. Hope you are well

  35. Lovely, beautiful colors. We don't have colors here yet. Probably in two weeks. It is usually around Thanksgiving that we get our colors. Thanks so much for sharing yours. I do so love fall color on the trees.

  36. I jumped over here to let you know we are just fine! The storm woke us up in the middle of the night but the wind and rain let up and we had a nice day! WHEW! What a relief! Hope you are well and having a good week! What's new with you? Hugs...lots of HUGS!!!

  37. Oh my, what lovely photos - autumn at its best! We're under snow now, so we've definitely turned the corner towards winter.
