Odds and Ends 3272015

It feels as if I have done that many "odds and ends" posts. Poor you!

First up, this morning's view...

and that after a night of heavy rain! I practically leapt from my bed this morning hoping to see it all gone. Guess the joke is on me.

The rain did not work nearly as well as this did a couple of weeks ago...

~and away those bankings go~

Last night as I was putting slathering my lotion on, I noticed a cricket on the windowsill. He was on his back, poor fellow, and flailing. Oh my. He seemed to have been half-eaten.

Know anything about that, Fioré? Hmmm...

Anyway, I grabbed a bit of tissue, dispatched said cricket, and tossed him into the waste basket. I climbed into bed and very soon the air seemed to be filled with the pungent aroma of cricket juice. Let's just say that I spent my night dreaming strange dreams; the story lines of which would rival any of those created for The Twilight Zone

Recently, I found a little book of James Whitcomb Riley rhymes. One perfectly reminded me of a little snowball eater I love.

Jakob has never met a chunk of snow that he didn't like. (Just look at his expression!) And, oh yes, he is often reminded of choosing wisely. ☺

The text came with its own perfectly sweet illustration, I just had one of my own.

Lastly, in the odds and ends department, is a simple envelope pillow I made for my niece's birthday from one of her old t-shirts. She had been on a tour of western Europe in high school. I thought she might find it meaningful and a map makes a great graphic!

She does like it.

Thus ends #3272015...have a happy one!

  1. Cricket juice??!!! Vee you are too funny... Good for Fiore, I'd say. I hope he ate the noisy end... Sweet photo of Jakob, and that's a great pillow, your niece will love it! It'll bring back many great memories.

    1. Fioré is a she, which makes it all so unladylike. =D

  2. That picture of Jake and the poem is so perfect! He does look very happy with the snow. Was there a time that we felt so happy about snow? I can remember playing in it for hours, but now I just wonder if driving in it will be safe. How about you? You did have a great time taking the boys skiing this winter. There must still be some kitten left in Fiore, she hasn't given up interest in moving things. :-) And what a great idea (gift) for your niece. You are so creative.

  3. Eww to the cricket juice! I would send some sunshine that way,but it is so fleeting here it is gone before I can bottle it up. Jakob is a cutie! Have a great weekend!

  4. You make me giggle! Cute picture of Jakob eating the snow and the poem is darling! Hey - I really like the T-Shirt pillow - you should do a quick tutorial on how to make these (I have a gazillion T-Shirts from when I worked at the Stratford Festival Gift Shop).

  5. Maybe I have avoided cricket juice, I really can't bear to crush bugs, the crunching noise just gives me the heebie jeebies, I didn't know it smelled. One more reason to throw them outside uncrushed. Winter is trying to return here, lets just say the precipitation today is a little fluffy. Avoidance is the name of the game, I shall simply avoid looking out the window for a while. The poem is cute, and I love how your photo of your own little snow eater resembles the illustration so closely. Wouldn't it be cute to frame the poem with the photo? Cute pillow, and a great way to let your niece keep that special tee shirt in a usable form:>)

  6. Cricket juice??!!!! No wonder you had strange dreams if you can smell cricket juice. But then, I bet Fiore can smell cricket juice, too. !!!! ;) ;) Fun picture of grandson eating snow and the perfect poem. Great pillow -- she should like it ... memories! Do you think it will ever be spring in your neck of the woods??? I'm already complaining about the heat and humidity! Happy Friday!

  7. I've been doing the same with stink bugs, but I flush them!

We had rain too, but our snow has been all gone for a week now! Jake is a cute snowball eater!

I love the pillow! What a great map!

  10. Darling!: That little snow-eating boy! And that's a great poem too!

Not-so-darling: A half-eaten cricket and the smell of cricket juice. Ick. (I can. not. squish a cricket. Not that I don't want them dead. I just can't stand to squish something that big - it gives me the willies - nor hear/feel that crunchy sound.)

    2. Yes, well, he was just half the cricket he used to be. Dispatching him seemed the kindest thing to do under the circumstances. ; >

  11. I, too, love odds-and-ends posts :) Keep them coming, Vee!

LOVE the pillow you made! I am going to have to go through my t-shirt stash. I know I don't have one as neat as your niece's, but maybe there is something that might come semi close.

Your Jakob and my son could definitely get along with one another... my son is constanty eating snow :) Happy weekend! Hugs!

The old illustrations and poems always delight me.

  15. With this mild weather the past week the first thing I do in the morning is look out and see how much snow is still there or if there is fresh on top of the old. The snow has gone down considerably though - a good sign. What a cute poem and graphic you found. And of course, Jacob looks adorable eating his snow cone. I think the pillow turned out great and is a sweet memento of her trip. I enjoy these posts Vee so don't ever think they are boring. I hope the weekend is a good one for you.

  17. You know why I love to read your odds and ends? It makes it feel as though I am sitting having a nice cuppa and actually visiting with you. And that is a very good feeling, indeed.

LOVE the pillow. Absolutely love it, Vee.

Have a great weekend,. sweet friend. Hugs.

  18. I have always liked your odds & ends posts, Vee. I think it is fun to just have a few helter-skelter posts to finish up things that aren't big enough to warrant a post all their own.
    Still snow here, too. ugh
That is a GREAT pillow- I bet she did love it!!!
Hope you have a great weekend. xo Diana

  19. Such a cute pic of Jake eating the snow. I would cry if I looked out the window and saw snow. But while you are enjoying cool temps this summer, I'll be sweltering in the heat and humidity.
Your pillow is very pretty and the new header is beautiful! Love it.

  21. Hi.
Odds and ends make for interesting posts, Vee. I always enjoy them. Love your personally illustrated poem - snow is so much fun for children! The t-shirt pillow is wonderful - lucky niece. Your new header is a great composite of your world at present.

  23. wow Vee..seeing all that snow reminds me that it is still winter in places. We are maybe getting temps in the low 30's this weekend. :-(

  25. Our snow is completely gone now and I hope it will finally stay gone. Hope yours isn't around for much longer. I like your illustration better. : )
I've been known to eat a bit of snow too. : )

  27. Just the THOUGHT of cricket juice brings on a huge 'ick'!
I like an odds and ends post - sometimes the most interesting ones!

  28. Cricket juice for real? I would have flushed him. Excessive I know. Your grass should be really green after all the snow and rain. Love your bits and pieces; it's like a catch up with friends. And the pillow, and the new header -- really nice, like a visit to your house during which we have the chat. It reminds me of a quilt!

    1. It was an earthy smell...I thought it was the cricket. Refer to my comments on stair climbing in previous post. I am not going downstairs to flush half a dead cricket. LOL!

  29. Fiore is so cute! Sorry about the cricket juice and bad dreams! lol
That is a darling idea with the t-shirt for the pillow cover.
Love the poem with the photo of your grandson.
Georgia had a cold front to come through today and the wind was wicked.
    Have a good evening. Mildred

  30. Crickets STINK!!! So do the big fat water bugs we have here in Texas!
I suck them up in my Rainbow Vacuum and it SMELLS! Thankful I it is a water basin system and I can dump it out!
Amazing the weather from the different parts of the country! We were in the 70's today and will be 80 tomorrow.

  31. Yes, love the expression on Jakob's face. He looks as if he's biting into a piece of warm apple pie. As for the cricket, I never take any chances, especially with a cricket. He would have been flushed. Have you ever had the challenge of finding a cricket in your room in the middle of the night? I have! Not pleasant. For such a tiny little thing, they seem to be the loudest of God's creatures. Love the t-shirt pillow, clever idea. Thanks for sharing your odds and ends. ~ Abby

  34. Spring is showing up a little tardy for the party, as they say! I hate when I wake up remembering a crazy dream, but poof! it disappears from my memory. Fiore is a cutie.

  35. She does like it? Too bad. I mean...it looks wonderful right there in your living room! What a great idea for a pillow.

Good job of illustrating the poem!

Your morning view would be great...in January. But I think I need to send you some tulip pic's...just so you know spring is here...somewhere! Did you know that April is just around the corner?

    Enjoy your weekend!

  36. That was a very clever idea for a gift pillow. I am sure she loves it.
The snow here is almost gone but it keeps sneaking in at night. Then it melts and then it is back. I'm scared! haha...

  37. I am glad that Jakob finds the sweetness in life! I enjoy your odds and ends posts and love the t-shirt you made. I love maps! They just set me dreaming.

  38. I have a little snowball eater, too, Vee! My granddaughter loves to eat snow. I enjoyed this sweet little poem.

We almost hit 80 degrees today so forget spring fever, I have summer fever! We can still get frost, however, and snow, so I am enjoying it while we have the nice weather.

Fiore does have a guilty look on her face--lol--poor cricket!

  39. How neat you remembered the poem that so well describes Jacob's love for snow eating, Vee.
I love that you chose a gift to make for your niece that has special meaning for her-those are the best of gifts to receive, I think!
As for looking, hoping, and desiring to see the ground again, I've given up. I'm just trying to distract myself away from the windows so I'll quit being disappoint:>(
    Take care-Kimberly

  40. Wow, if you have managed over three million oddments posts I am impressed - hee hee!! It is good to do a post like this sometimes for all the little things that don't necessarily need a whole post isn't it. xx

    ReplyDelete
  41. I can already imagine several scenarios for those dreams! Sure I don't see any crickets in my home tonight - LOL. Hope you get the warm-up that we're going to be getting this week. You need it!

  42. Odds & ends posts are some of my favorites. I always feel sort of desperate when I write them, as if I'm really scrounging for something to post about, but people seem to really enjoy them. And I always enjoy reading other people's odds & ends posts. The pillow for your niece is such a great idea and meaningful gift. That T-shirt makes a striking pillow!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well, I did enjoy these odds and ends of yours, even though I am a few days late. There's something about those weekends...I just rarely read many blogs on them...not sure why. Anyway, about those crickets...have you ever sucked one up in the vacuum? They smell HORRIBLE when you do! I love that sweet poem about eating the snow...you know how much I love my snow cream...and last but not least, the pillow is so very cool. Your niece will cherish it, I'm sure. I certainly hope you can finally get rid of that snow soon...."I'm dreaming of a white Easter....la la la" :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love the pillow you made for your niece. That's a terrific idea! Surely spring will be on it's way soon...at least I hope so! We are amazed to see that most of our snow has disappeared but it's still in the forecast for the first half of April. I enjoyed your odds and ends!
