Autumn Decor

Days grow shorter now, the nights chillier...The trees kindle with color, a few at a time, small flashes of scarlet appear in the swamp, and the sugar maples begin to glow, as the great wave of autumn glory rises to full tide. ~ Gladys Taber

October—my favorite month for God's amazing decor; my least favorite for man's. I wonder if my neighbors ever think of how distressing it is for me to see the glowing skeleton hanging from their maple tree. Unlikely.  I changed my kitchen curtain situation so I only have to see its dangling feet, which is plenty disturbing enough.

October has a boatload of chores to get accomplished. I have never cut back hostas in autumn before, but now that I have watched Laura at Garden Answer for a couple of years, I will be, right after the color fades and before they turn to mush. I also harvested enough chives to get me through the winter.

I already pruned the rose bushes way back. The deer were ravenous even though I had covered the roses in bird netting. The deer also ate all the phlox and the bee balm. Perhaps I just need to rip out my garden. Most people here have their vegetable gardens fenced. It doesn't seem practical for a flower garden on the front lawn.

Since I was listless Thursday, I decided to do some indoor decorating. I have bought nothing new so determined to use only what I already had. I also decided to decorate for Thanksgiving. Yes, I know it is early, unless you are living in Canada. I hope that my Canadian cousins and my blogging friends have a fabulous holiday this weekend.

So with minimal commentary, here are my photo offerings.

Thanks for your visit. Happy October!

Love,

Vee

  1. You have so many pretty things, inside and out! I love the bird with the berry wreath on the book. That is perfection in my eyes!

  2. I love your opening quote! {Insert all the fall feels . . . } And your first sentence? I agree wholeheartedly! So I do my best to relish the first! I love seeing your autumn decor! I feel like peeking into someone's home is a peek at who they are, so I appreciate the invitation and the friendly welcome. Your home is so cozy and lovely and warm! Happy October as you enjoy the splendor that God has created!

  3. Oh, Vee, you have been busy! I love Gladys Taber's words, and yours about God's fall decorating. I agree with you 100% about the man-made grotesque and unwelcome decor that appears on lawns around here.
Your home is full of such pretty vignettes. It's hard to choose a favourite, but I think it might be the bird perched on the books.
I'm drinking my morning tea and reading blogs before tackling the sweet potato casserole, the turkey dressing, the ... well, you know how it goes! Happy Thanksgiving to you, since you have Canadian roots (a grandmother?), and live relatively close to the border.

  4. Very pretty Vee! I haven't even started to get my yard in order. Have a great Thanksgiving!

  5. Everything looks lovely and cozy in your haven Vee. I love the shafts of light and dapples of sunshine. Starting to prepare for the Thanksgiving dinner over here. Pie to bake, dressing to make, cranberry sauce done, turnip peeled, sourdough bread on the go ....
Yes, why oh why the grotesque and tacky halloween things? Outside work must wait till next week. Hugs ...

  6. Hi Vee~ The quote by, Gladys Taber is so perfect for this time of year when everything is just starting to change colors, at least in my area. Your fall décor is so pretty and I love that you just used what you had, that makes sense to me as well. I love oil lamps, and yours look so pretty on your shelf. I have always loved how you put those beautiful plates along the top of your fence, they are so pretty. I agree with you on the terrible Halloween decorations that people insist on putting in their yard. In a small town near us, the decorations someone had in their yard were to horrible that they were ordered by the law to remove them because they were so inappropriate. Have a wonderful week-end, Vee. Hugs, Barb

  8. I have thought about hanging my turkey platter early this year. I love it and the rest of the family roll their eyes but that is okay. Your place looks beautiful! I never cut back my hostas. Didn't know you should. Hmmm... I just heard recently that it seems like forest animals are hungrier than usual this year. Some are coming up to homes where they never have before. They were wondering if it means a bad winter or if it is due to something else. (Oh, fortunately I do not have anyone around me that decorates for Halloween but if one has Direct TV, you can't escape the commercials, even on kid's networks!)

  9. I ALWAYS love seeing your cozy home! Every nook and cranny is filled with warm cozy touches and I want to walk into the photos and look around.
No fall here in Texas yet. It is 70 degrees - or it was when I woke up - but will go back up in the 80's today! No color. We usually go from green straight to brown. I love seeing posts from up your way - that's my way of leaf-peeking!!

  10. Everything looking nice around your lovely home.
I love these nice cool crisp days.
I don't do any fall decorating, just a couple of mums out on the porch.

  11. Your home looks so welcoming! What are your rooting in a glass jar? Is that a Christmas Cactus?

    1. An Easter cactus...I don't know why I am hanging on. I checked the plant into an upstairs bedroom and neglected it for many months. This is a guilt rooting. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    2. Thanks! Maybe if I pot it up...

  12. Your home looks so welcoming, Vee. The sunbeams are so pretty. I'm totally with you on the gore that seems to be in some folks yards, etc. It certainly disturbs the peacefulness that Autumn brings.

  13. Your home is lovely. I also love the scenery in October, especially in New England. The beauty that the Lord provides is a blessing to see.

  14. Happy October Vee....I find this month glorious in every way! I love Halloween and have such fun and festive memories of this day, so seeing the skeleton would be a touch of whimsy to me.....embrace all that life has to offer! I so enjoyed your fall decor....it was subtle and rather romantic.....hope you enjoy the fall season ...the leaves are beginning to fall and we have had such cool temps it has all been delightful!

    1. There are many things in this life that I am unwilling to embrace. To each her own. ☺️ Thanks for your visit and the comment. We are entering peak week so all our leaves will soon be on the ground. My neighbor, God bless him, did all the mulching yesterday. What a big chore done.

  15. Have I ever mentioned how lovely your home is? (Oh, I am sure I have, grin). I am missing the fall season right now...fall is so different here in Florida...but I am enjoying still wearing flip flops, grin. The friends we are staying with have decorated for Halloween and by the time we get into our home it will be Thanksgiving, so no fall decorating...we haven't quite decided to decorate for Christmas...we shall see. I will just be happy to get into the house by then, just saying. grin.

  16. Hello and good morning. I'm ready early for Sunday School so I'm catching up on my blogging friends. I attended my first Women's Retreat in many years 1/2 of Friday and 1/2 of Saturday. I'm still processing my thoughts about the event. I'll leave it at that. I'm with you and have already put up my fall Thanksgiving decor so I can enjoy it for 2 solid months before I pull out Christmas. I like the vignettes you came up with. I've only used that word, vignette, since blogging. Looking at the definition I'm not sure it's really the right word to use for small areas of decor. I'm drawn to the top of that bookcase and what you did there. The combination of the books, lamps, wreath and that great window frame! We are still waiting for cooler Fall days here. The nights and mornings are crisp but we're still warming up in the afternoon and our air conditioning kicks on in the early evening. At least we won't be trudging through the corn maze in the snow this year!! I have lots of planter clearing to do. Our kids are coming in a couple weekends and I'm thinking I'll impose on them to do it for me. Sorry for my short novel. Have a wonderful Sunday!

  17. Oh, I enjoyed your photos giving us a glimpse of your autumnal decorating indoors. We've been slowly getting the garden ready for winter ("we" meaning Rick) - haha. We haven't had any frost yet this year but the night temperatures are dipping closer to freezing as the calendar days tick off. We had a lovely day celebrating our Canadian Thanksgiving with family. Just arrived back home and one of us is already off for a wee snooze. I'm right behind him. hehe.

Wishing you a pleasant week ahead. Brenda xo

  18. Hi Vee,

I totally agree with your first sentence about God's decor. Fall is SUCH a wonderful season. I like people's fall decor, but the minimal for Halloween. I loved seeing your pictures. Glad to see that pretty sunbeam you captured in your den. :) I love, love your lace curtains, and I haven't seen a rotary phone in a while. I like your turkey plates much better than mine -- I love brown transferware. About the deer, they eat everything around here. Sigh. We think they ate some of the leaves off our apple tree, and they for sure at some big pieces off our Arborvitaes (new evergreens we planted this spring). They're just like goats.

Thank you for sharing your fall beauty with us, Vee. I think fall is the coziest time of the year. Have a great week!!

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor

P.S. I can see the skeleton legs when I enlarge your picture. ;)

  19. I'm not a fan of celebrating death either!
I'm thankful that the deer in our area, stay back in our woods and don't visit my garden. The chickens were bad enough!
I have a turkey plate on display already and a turkey pillow! They are cute, so why not.
I'd love to be in Maine at peak color! Oh my, I bet it's gorgeous! Will you and Laurel get a drive in this year?

    1. I'd be very surprised, but hope springs eternal. 😁 Laurel has not been feeling so well and is just now getting back on her feet.

  20. What fun it is to see your home all decorated for the beautiful fall season. Everything looks so nice and I love the slant of the sunlight in many of your photos. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the stack of books with the birdy on top. Two of my favorite things.
That is such a shame that the deer had a smorgasbord in your front flower bed. So disappointing!! Our fall color is just getting started here. I'll bet yours has been a sight too behold.

  21. Love your Gladys Taber quote! Her descriptions of seasons are .close to perfection. And I so relate to your thoughts about man's Halloween decor! One neighborhood where we walk has lovely displays of mums, pumpkins etc. But then there are those homes with skeletons dangling from trees ... And other parts of town have skeletons taller than the homes, rows of glowing skulls, etc. Do they not know that these objects represent people who have died? There is nothing festive about them.

Loved the glimpses of autumn around your home! Your decorating is always lovely. The bird on the stack of books is sweet!

  22. I love your autumn decor, Vee; reminds me of the homey feel of Susan Branch. Those plates on the fence add a touch of whimsy.

  24. Somehow I missed this post, and I love it so much!! Your home is so warm and cozy and welcoming...and very "cabinesque", if that's a word! I love that. Your decorating is wonderful and perfect for the season, now that I am seeing it on the last day of October! LOL. But it should still be good through Thanksgiving, unless you like to decorate for Christmas early. Beautiful settings and vignettes. Love it all.

  25. P.S. Just notices the Grace Livingston Hill book, "Stranger within the Gates". I used to have a collection of many of her books, but I donated them to a church library years ago. I loved her books so much!! That brought back memories. Also, wondering, does the old black rotary phone still work? LOL. I loved all of this so much...

    1. The rotary phone works only with imagination. Every child I have ever known knows exactly how to use it. 🙂

  26. Pretty and cozy... Especially the pic with the old rotary phone!

    But!!!!

No pic of the glowing skeleton!?!?!? -sigh-sigh-sigh-
