The Garden is In and C-Span 2

Such wonderful days we're enjoying. The air is crisp and clear with zip humidity. (Right. We were recently sweltering and now we're back to normal.) The days are long and golden and the foliage is amazing and green. I spent all day outside yesterday planting and cleaning and putzing about.

I planted four tomato plants, two broccoli plants, rosemary, chives, marigolds, two seashells, a broken bit of a birdbath, and three plates.

I really like the colors in these marigolds.

This? Supposedly it will keep flies away. I first saw it on Pinterest so it is now pinned to my garden folder. The source is *here.* Maybe I need a penny.(I did plop a shiny penny in later.)

~~~
I watched the most riveting television last night on C-Span 2. It was the testimony of six Americans before the House Ways and Means Committee yesterday on the targeting of Conservative groups by "the agency that will remain unnamed." Right. I'm as scared as the next person. Wonder how many folks are watching C-Span 2 these days...
~~~

The next time you see me, I'll be participating in Donna's Photo Challenge. See my sidebar and click on the icon for more details. I've had fun with this month's "lesson."

A good day to you!

  1. Your flower bed is lovely! We don't have cable, but I do have the internet and I downloaded the hearings and spent yesterday afternoon and evening watching them. It is unbelievable, and how anyone can sit there and defend the IRS is stunning. To say that the so-called scrutiny was bi-lateral is a joke.

  2. As funny as it seems that bag with a penny works! I have friends who have done that around their homes. Oh CSpan...well my hubby is listening to everything right now and totally concerned.
    Your plates look great and enjoy that garden this year...we are green here for right now, and I am soooooooooo enjoying it.

  3. Hi Vee
    I have chipped plates half buried in my garden too, they make good yard art. As for the clear plastic bags, I first saw them hanging around an outdoor beach bar in Florida and they did work with all the food around. I don't think they had a penny in theirs though.
    Glad your weather is more accommodating, we're having days in the high 50's right now.

  6. Three cheers for "zip humidity". It makes it so much nicer for working outdoors.
    I like the touch of whimsy you added to your veggie garden.
    I had recently seen the plastic bag idea somewhere and forgotten all about it. So glad to be reminded here today.

  7. Good morning! Love the garden! And yay for that gorgeous "zip humidity" weather. I will be curious to hear how that bag works. Think there is any chance of that on my daughters dairy? ; ) (wonder how many bags they would need? haha) Enjoy your day Vee!

  8. I have always been told the best place to get your news is from C-Span....its pretty discouraging!
    I got my tomatoes in last weekend, they are not as big as yours but I was late getting them in...I have been late doing just about everything this spring. Love the idea of the plates

  9. We don't watch television, but that sure sounded like something we should have watched. Yikes almighty.

    Agree on marigolds - also deer hate them so I always have a couple pots of them (grown from seed usually) near my covered porch area - and hubs always has them grown out back in his vegetable garden.

    You are on your way!!

    Have a wonderful day.

  10. Love your flower bed, Vee, and I am going to check out that fly remedy right now. I don't watch C-Span, have to take ALL news agencies with a grain of salt, too. I learned to let go of things I can't really control. xo

  11. Love your garden (totally charming!!)...love your weather (ours is similar, amazingly!). Don't love government oppression, but that is nothing new. I'm so glad that His Kingdom is not of this world!

  12. I saw one of the testimonies yesterday and it brought me to tears. I was surprised by my response. I'm glad your sweating weather has passed.

    1. I had a similar response...those who testified were eloquent and then there was the dawning realization just how deeply corrupt our government has become. Yes, there has always been corruption, but this has reached unprecedented levels.

  13. Love your Marigolds and the plates and shells you have planted with them.
    I don't have C-Span, but I've been hearing all the bad reports.
    Now I have to get out in my garden.
    Have a wonderful day.

  14. I'm not surprised at all about how widespread corruption runs in our government and particularly this administration. What will surprise me if something will actually be done about it and those to blame will be held accountable. You can't tell me the man in the top spot doesn't know anything considering the number of times the "unnamed" chief paid him a visit at the WH. More times than even his most trusted cabinet members.

    You've got a nice little garden going there. I didn't know about the bag trick. Sounds like I need to try that.

  15. It is perfect weather here too! Fair and lovely June...let's demand it become a Six week month!
    Mexican restaurants often have water bags hanging about; shooing flies is still just part of the dining experience.
    The C-span coverage of the horrific IRS situation at least assures me we CAN get unfiltered news for now. How long that will last...who knows.

  16. Tomatoes and herbs and marigolds go very well together in your raised planter. I love the whimsy of the plates and shells.
    Haven't heard anything about the US news lately, but then I haven't been watching any television at all - too much going on.
    In Ecuador, store owners hung up bags of water beside the doorways, I don't know if it worked or not. Can't hurt to try!
    Have a good day and enjoy the beautiful temperature and zip humidity. It's lovely out west these days, too.

  17. Hello! I loved seeing your garden! I liked the china plates. Did you see Manuela's post on teacup bird feeders? Too cute.

    Got your comment on my blog!! Woo hoo! I finally figured out how to get google+ comments off.

    Great visiting your lovely place:)

  21. Lovely flowers...

    Cool idea. Worth a try! For getting rid of flies, that is.

    While and since being sick, I have left news alone. I am living like Tasha Tudor. No news... No tv but having the Yankee games on in the evening... Reading my books... Doing stuff around here. Baking... Living in my own little bubble. In my own little home. In my own little corner of the world.

    Yup, head firmly placed in the sand.

    For as long as it lasts...

    Just saying...

    I did notice that on the front page of a local newspaper today, it said that the unbattled IRS had another scandal. Didn't read it, but thought it interesting, that this was on a local paper, which is not a conservative paper.

    Oppps, I hear Tasha calling me... "I'm coming Tasha..." :-)

  22. Gee, it sure feels like fall to me!! I'm too cold with that old northwest wind blowing but the sunshine sure is nice. I love your tomato and marigold garden. A good combo to keep the bugs away from the tomatoes. I forgot to plant my plates. Thanks for the reminder. I've tried the water in the baggy by the back door before and it works. I've also tried the blown up paper bag to keep hornets away too. Years ago. Now I buy those fake wasp nests. I forgot about the photo challenge so may not be up to it this time around. Enjoy the cool air! I'm wearing a sweatshirt again. :(

  23. Lovely garden, Vee! I have to confess I have done absolutely NOTHING to beautify outside this year:( I need to try your fly remedy. They have started up here and we practically have to keep a fly swatter in every room.

  35. Your garden plot looks lovely! Three cheers for good weather!

    The whole federal government is spinning out of control. Am I surprised? Hardly. Elect a scoundrel and you get more scoundrels, that's the way it goes. Makes me ill.

    On a more cheerful note, I'm glad that you are ready for the upcoming photo challenge AND you had fun with the latest lesson! Woo-hoo! I can't wait to see everybody's creativity and read about any lessons learned along the way.

  42. Hi Vee,

    I LOVE your charming garden and your raised bed! I've been wanting a raised bed here for ages; we had one at our first house, and it was great. It was a pretty big one too, and I was able to plant a lot in it. Plus, you can control the soil and weeds much better in a raised bed.

    Your black dirt looks so rich and fertile!! Is Maine soil typically like that or did you amend it? We have mostly red clay in our area -- the pits to work with.

    Vee, the dishes are just darling in your garden, such a neat idea. I'm going to have to start looking at the gardening section of Pinterest and not just the recipes. :) I seem to be stuck on food for some reason.

    I haven't been watching C-Span 2, but I've been reading a lot online, as usual. It makes me furious and scares the dickens out of me. I'm so afraid the majority of citizens have become too indifferent, and that's understandable to a certain degree. But as Winston Churchill said, "All it needs for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing." Thanks for your pretty (and insightful) post, as usual. :) Have a good rest of the week.

    Hugs to you,

    Denise at Forest Manor

  44. Oh I love days like that, puttering around in the yard. I'm so happy I'll have a nice yard again to do that in. I have missed having a yard living in the townhouse.
    Great idea about the flies. I'm going to do that too.

  45. I love your garden and the marigolds remind me of my mom...she always planted them, in with her veggies...
    I had thought about doing the photo challenge party but when I went over to ck it out, I found out two things: 1. I don't have the right camera and 2. I don't have a clue what she is talking about. :((
    Sooo, I'll just enjoy YOUR photos

  47. I have been busy gardening whenever I get the chance--we never had much property in NY and we're learning how to do lawn care etc, here. My NYC friends are teasing me that I truly sound like a suburbanite now! :)

    Sadly, I don't get online or TV time these days since my granddaughter takes up my daytime hours and shopping and household chores takes up my evening hours. I fell less stress, I think, because of it!

  48. Your pictures are beautiful!

    I've been out visiting other people's gardens during the last few months, getting inspired, and it's nice to see yours. We actually have tomatoes already, big ones! Found some starts that were developed especially for our area. They grew fast, but tomatoes are still green. With the warm weather here, I'm hoping they ripen soon. We'll be picking strawberries early this year too. A first!
