A Haven for Vee

This Isn't April

Let's try the Hodge Podge today where I will be linking without participating.

1.July 15th is National Give Something Away Day.  What can you give away? Lots
Will you? Not likely

2. Do you have a mantra? Please share with the class if you feel comfortable doing so. Did anyone die, which is a way of telling myself that everything (short of death) has a way of working out.

3. Who does the grocery shopping in your house? How many times a week do you shop? Do you make a list or pray for inspiration in the produce aisle? John shops; I shop; We shop together. We both use a List. My policy is to avoid the grocery store for as long as possible.

4. Is there a TV show you're embarrassed to say you watch? Yes. You're going to tell us what it is, right? Yes.  DWTS. Sometimes, I do have to avert my eyes or busy myself with something else to be able to "watch" this program. I do not do well with lewd and this show descends to that level regularly.

5. A recent article listed fifteen words we should eliminate from our (written) vocabulary in order to sound smarter-

that, went, honestly, absolutely, very, really, amazing, always, never, literally, just, maybe, stuff, things, and irregardless

Of the fifteen, which word is your most overused?

Honestly, that is really just literally absolutely never, maybe never, the most ridiculous stuff I have ever read irregardless — wait, irregardless is always not even a word! What a tedious chore to figure out which word I use most often. I know this: I do not use irregardless. Who thinks of these things?

6. So apparently dying your hair gray (in your youth!) is a thing right now. It's called 'The Granny Hair' trend. Your thoughts? Your choice. My choice to laugh at such foolishness. That's okay. I laugh at the "Youth" often just as my elders laughed at me back in the day.

7. A while back Buzz Feed asked members to share the most beautiful sentence they've read in a piece of literature. A hard thing to narrow down, at least for me, but let's try. What's one of the most beautiful sentences you've ever read in a piece of literature?

Cheating here as I have been rather brief so far. I took note of this paragraph when I read Enchanted April last year...I loved it so.

They left the path, and clambered down the olive terraces, down and down, to where at the bottom the warm, sleepy sea heaved gently among the rocks. There a pine-tree grew close to the water, and they sat under it, and a few yards away was a fishing-boat lying motionless and green-bellied on the water. The ripples of the sea made little gurgling noises at their feet. They screwed up their eyes to be able to look into the blaze of light beyond the shade of their tree. The hot smell from the pine-needles and from the cushions of wild thyme that padded the spaces between the rocks, and sometimes a smell of pure honey from a clump of warm irises up behind them in the sun, puffed across their faces. Very soon Mrs. Wilkins took her shoes and stockings off, and let her feet hang in the water. After watching her a minute Mrs. Arbuthnot did the same. Their happiness was then complete. Their husbands would not have known them. They left off talking. They ceased to mention heaven. They were just cups of acceptance.

~from Enchanted April chapter 8

Oh to be a "cup of acceptance" more often. God has given me so much to enjoy.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I am such a creature of habit like those of you who have mentioned the same phenomena. When I looked back to see when I was last discussing Enchanted April, I looked in April archives. Makes sense, but no, I was last writing about *Enchanted April in July 2014.* Weird.

You may still be able to find this movie on Netflix. I did and will be enjoying it again today!

Thanks for reading. You can find others' posts *here.*

Stay cool now!

  1. Glad you joined in, chuckling over #2. I can no longer tolerate DWTS. Grinning

After the bunch of storms moved in yesterday, it has left it nice and cool. Weird July, but you didn't ask, LOLOL. BTW, I am still trying to figure out how to use the diffuser on Photoscape, I'll figure it out.

Have a lovely day Vee, thanks for the smiles. Blessings

  2. Number 5 had me laughing out loud. Enchanted April is my favorite movie (and perhaps book, too). When I'm asked what my favorite movie is and I respond Enchanted April, people like at me and say huh???!!! Their loss. Our gain!

  3. Granny hair? I've heard of the younger set dying their hair grey and have seen couple of them in the past year. I don't get it. It will turn grey before they know it so why dye it now. I must look for that movie and watch it. It sounds absolutely amazing and very nice. :) Have a great day! (cool and showery here)

  4. DWTS is my guilty pleasure too. Being raised in a church with no dancing, I dance in my head while I watch. It's about as close as I'm going to get at this point.

  5. Hi Vee, it's been a long time since I've done much blog visiting, never mind blogging. My nephew's death last September really knocked the stuffing out of me - more than I realized. On another note, I Love this post!!!

My new mantra, which I've been using since about January and is displayed in my classroom is - "Sometimes it's the very people who no one imagines anything of – who do the things no one can imagine." - Christopher Morcom

Have you seen the movie "Enchanted April" ~ I love the term "smoothing my feathers" ~ something I say to my husband when things get stressful! "Time to smooth my feathers." LOL!!! He thinks it's funny too!!

    Keep cool!

  6. I have been wanting to watch that, Vee. You just convinced me to do so. Loved your answers and am preparing mine now and will be joining in on the fun - thanks for the idea.

    Hugs.

  7. I am just like you, Vee, and try to avoid the grocery store for as long as possible. I love shopping, but not there with the aisles crammed full of stuff and people.....that doesn't sound very nice of me now does it....

Anyway, always a delight to pop in for a little visit. Enjoy your Wednesday! Hugs!

  8. Fun post. I say the same thing to myself through struggles...no one is dying! Aren't we all creatures of habit..nothing new under the sun.
Have a wonderful day. Fun post!

  9. I loved you Hodgepodge answers. One of these days I will join in the fun :) I do the grocery shopping and learned early on in my marriage to leave the hubby at home unless I wanted the cart full of junk and spend twice as much money! And out of all of those words we are "supposed" to leave out of our vocabulary, I use them all quite regularly with the exception of irregardless... I guess I must sound pretty dumb....oh well...

  10. I used to watch DWTS but haven't the last couple of years. I laughed at No. 5...good job! Is irregardless even a word? I haven't seen Enchanted April, I hope to see it sometime as it sounds good. The last photo makes me think of days gone by. I used to float on my back when we went swimming in the pond. One of the ways we cooled off during those hot summers on the farm and before a/c. Stay cool!

    1. Definitely "irregardless" is not a word.

  11. Hey Vee, I don't see where I can write you privately - would you be kind enough to please write me so I can ask you a question? Thanks. Heading out the door for physical therapy session, so may be a while before responding. Thanks, luv.

  12. I don't read much but I would love to see the movie Enchanted April. As for shopping, I try to leave John at home. Every few steps, he calls me back to LOOK at something and it takes forever! We had a preacher that regularly used the word irregardless! I hate the word "absolutely." The phrase I use most often is "can I ask a question" knowing that I AM going to ask it!!!!! I haven't watched DWTS in a few years. Recently I thought I would watch Celebrity Family Feud and even it is suggestive and nasty at times. Mostly I stick to home and garden tv. Hope you enjoy the day!

  13. Enchanted April sounds grand--we must watch it. I enjoyed your answers, Vee. Now I want to float in that lovely pond and cool off. We walked this morning and it is quite humid--takes a while to cool down these days.♥

  14. #5 cracking me up! I love reading your posts Vee. You always capture the attention of everyone for sure. Well, I guess I have not heard of the young wanting to go gray now. That's a new one for me. I may be going gray unless I start doing my own hair.....the price is CRAZY these days. Happy Wednesday Vee. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  15. Irregardless of the month, Enchanted April is a fine book thing - I'd love to see the movie one day. This is a fun HodgePodge!
Grocery shopping is my department. Occasionally Tim will come with me, but I can get through more quickly without him.

  17. And along comes me to ask, did you mean you are participating without linking?
So, after all the recent blog discussions about us grannies letting our hair go naturally grey I broached the subject with my 40 year old hairdresser. I'm sorry I went there but at least discovered that strawberry blondes do not grey early and she is cheesed that I do not have any yet. (she does)
Well, that's a good thing as MS would say. :-)

  18. I don't get why anyone would purposely go gray early...but I also don't get a lot of the new trends now. I find that the older I get, the more I shake my head at the youth. Which if you knew me back in the day, you would say what comes around goes around because I always thought old people had no clue. Now I am one and of course I want to be smart as the dickens. Have a lovely COOL day!

  19. I remember you talking about Enchanted April before but I can't remember if I watched the movie. I remember looking for it! LOL. I hate the time grocery shopping takes. My husband in recent years will do occasionally but usually with his own list and to quick in and quick out Aldi's.

  20. I suppose I should look down and shuffle my feet too when I admit getting enjoyment from The Simpson's (only the one's produced in the 90s) and sometimes Family Guy. I'm a bit of a cartoon addict. Just never grew up, I guess.
Enjoyed your answers. Hope your day is blessed. ~:)

  21. Loved your over used words paragraph. : ) Reminded me when I was in 4th grade we had to write a story using all our spelling words for that week.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Now that was a fun read. I see we have the same feelings about grocery shopping.
Your mantra is a good one.
    Granny Hair Trend... really??
I must put Enchanted April on my movie list.

  23. well, I did an entire post devoted to Hodge Podge and just as I was about to hit the enter key and post it.... I hit the wrong key and deleted it. Maybe next week.

  24. I am still trying to figure out what DWTS is, I guess I am living to much of a sheltered life here at the farm.I will trying to figure it out while you are sleeping tonight, I even went and read your comments hoping someone wold spell it out!~wink~ I too postpone grocery shopping, but like you and John, it is shared with dh and I.
I did here of the youth going gray, thought it another fad too, that would soon pass, also thought if they will hang on it will come soon enough!
As always such a joy to visit, enjoy your evening, glad you got a break from the heat, we are still cooking.
    Hugs,
    Sue

  25. I laughed out loud at your answer to #5!! :D

Granny hair trend? Really? What's up with that? Does that make me trendy? Or does one have to be young and gray to be trendy?

We watched Enchanted April on your recommendation, so I guess that was last July. ;)

  26. I enjoyed your answers, Vee! I saw Enchanted April as a play on Broardway for my birthday years ago. I loved it! I'll have to see the movie version.

We just got back yesterday from a two week trip to NYC--lots of family events to attend and days out with friends. I had my iPad but hardly had time to connect. Will be catching up with you tonight!

  27. Loved learning more about you and now am off to find Enchanted April. I love movies like that. I loved Prize Winner from Defiance Ohio which I ran across on Netflix. If you watch it, let me know.

  28. Vee, I enjoyed your answers AND your excerpt from Enchanted April. I need to read it. I've watched the movie a number of times, and will again, but never read the book.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I enjoyed reading your answers to the questions, Vee. I read Enchanted April last year, after your recommendation, but still haven't seen the movie. I'll try to find it on Net Flix.

  30. The young dying their hair gray, that's a new one for me. I enjoyed reading your post.

  31. The weather is barely reaching 70, so no complaints here.
I still haven't seen this movie... YOU KNOW I'm THE ONLY PERSON WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHAT DWTS represents. Want to share?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would never admit to my guilty tv pleasure in person to anyone! xx

  33. I enjoyed the movie Enchanted April! That sentence from the book is delightful, and I like what you said about learning to be a Cup of Acceptance. Good stuff. ha ha! Now I've used a word that I should stop using so I can sound more intelligent! Loved your response to that!

  34. I've never heard of DWTS on tv...what is that ? I just may want to watch it, too.....:)

  35. You are too funny with DWTS in teeny letters. I watch. too, and vote, and am disappointed when I do not recognize most of the "stars". My most over used word is really, followed by seriously. I am more than bummed to say that Maine is not happening this summer. Illness in my cousin's in-laws' family. Has been rough for them. Oh well. I have been fighting a bug since 4th of July and feeling poorly myself.

  36. Loved that movie, and that was a beautiful quote. Love the idea of being a cup of acceptance.
