Welcoming February Hodge Podge

source
1. Can you believe it's the end of January? What was the best day of January 2017 for you, and why?

Yes, I can believe that yesterday was January 2017's last. And I am grateful. It hung on and on.

January 14 was a good day because I was with family enjoying a meal out.

2. What sounds make up the background noise in your life?

Ticking clocks

3. I read on the Power of Positivity website a list of ten things to drop from your life right now. They are—

anger outbursts, people who put you down, regret, negative self talk, being a people pleaser, the notion you need to be perfect, the past (but keep the lessons learned!), gossip and judgment, comparing yourself to others, and the word hate (focus on what you love instead)

Which thing on the list do you most need to drop? Are you trying or will you try?

May I just say that I hate love lists like this?! 😑 😇

I'd like to see all these things gone from my list and everyone else's for that matter. No, I will not consciously be trying to deal with them because willpower does not work. My method is to pray about these things and ask God for His intervention. He is the only One Who can take care of big, ugly issues like these.

4. What is sacred to you?

God's Word is sacred; His love for me; My relationships are sacred; My country is sacred; My home is sacred; Some favorite places feel sacred; My mother's hospice room felt sacred.

5. January is National Oatmeal month. Are you a fan, and if so how do you like it?

Yes, big fan. It's my breakfast most mornings. I prefer maple and brown sugar flavor with a bit of cream. I used to eat the very hearty varieties, but they were too hard on my delicate tummy so I switched to a generic brand.

6. What feelings does twilight stir up in you?

In the past, I might have had a sense of excitement for going out in the evening or watching a favorite program. These days, it is more an oh, I can go to bed soon feeling.

7. Something you're looking forward to next month?

I have nothing on the docket. Probably should change that so that I do. It's a choice.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Well, that was depressing. How about a joke? My friend Deborah told me this one in 1982.

Seems a godly, Christian man took some sky diving lessons and was prepared to jump solo for the first time. He said a quick prayer and leaped from the plane. At the appropriate time, he pulled his ripcord and nothing happened. He pulled the second one and still nothing. He began to pray in earnest and, when he opened his eyes, he was amazed to see a man shooting right straight up from the earth in his direction. As the man neared him, the skydiver yelled, "Hey, know anything about parachutes?" The response: "No! You know anything about furnaces?"

Please join *Joyce* for another fun Hodge Podge already in progress.

  2. I agree with that #3. God is definitely the answer. And I know he's the answer to my cranky winter attitude too. I hope you can find something fun to put on February's calendar. For being the shortest month, it sure seems like the longest!

  3. Oh I totally agree with you on number 3....no matter what it seems I have always been battling one of those things or another. Will power is NEVER enough. Our hope is only in Him.

  4. Ticking clocks strikes a chord with me! I love grandfather clocks and my late husband and I bought one many, many years ago. When I met my present husband, it was sad to discover that a ticking clock brought back memories for him and so our beautiful clock stands silent in the living room. It's still pretty and at least it is right twice a day!!

  5. Your #3 answer is excellent. One thing that has helped me is to make a page in my prayer journal for each of my character flaws, then to jot down Scripture verses that apply to each one. (Proverbs is full of helpful verses, but they may be found throughout the Bible). I pray about one of these issues each day. It really has helped me a lot to keep these things on my radar screen and ask God for help with them on a regular basis.

Loved reading all of your answers!

    1. One thing is sure...if we had the power to help ourselves, we would not need a Savior. My thought is that we respond to what He wants to accomplish in us through His strength. Thanks for your visit, Mrs. T, and your thoughtful response.

  6. Good joke!

As for your February -- I'm sure some fun things will pop up on your social calendar before the 28 days are up!

Regarding #3, you are so right. God can take care of the big, ugly issues in our lives. I'm counting on Him!

    Hugs and blessings to you!

  7. I am back! And I have to say I scare myself! I've commented about this show to you?!! How in the world? And honestly if you've talked about it I can't imagine how I missed it. I already know we think so much alike that if you like I will too no doubt. I have filed away the Victoria series you are enjoying and do plan on watching it next. Unless of course it erases from my memory again. Nudge me if I do. Lol.

I'm happy to see January move on, too.

  10. A good list of things to drop from your life, and I could take a lesson from you. Well at least spring will be here before we know it and we both get to celebrate a BD later this month. :-)

  11. Vee I'm glad that January is in the rear view mirror for you. February is here and Spring will be here before we blink. Great joke, Vee! I really love your answers to number 4. Have a nice afternoon. ♥

  12. I like to make my oatmeal with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and put a little bit of 100% organic maple syrup on it. Enjoyed reading all of your answers. Hope your week is going well.

  13. Spring seems on the way here, but I sort of am sad to see January end. February is a short month and will fly by. Enjoyed your answers.

  14. LOL- Not your usual "jumping from the airplane" story. How cute. I like your list, Vee, but you need SOMETHING to look forward to this month. It is what spurs us forward and gives us a bit of zest for life....not being bossy...just loving you!
Hope you have a good night...and I think I am ready for bed already....lol xo Diana

  15. I confess, I had to ask Dear to interpret your joke for me. I'm so dim. I enjoyed reading your answers. Hope you are having a nice twilight!

  16. Fun joke! I hope you do find something to look forward to this month. I have to say that February has always been the worst month of the year for me. Growing up in more northerly climes it seemed that winter would never end, and I longed for something new and fresh.
The wind is what I hear just now, outside, cold and chilling. I'm glad for a warm house.

  17. That was a pretty funny joke! I always look forward to hodgepodge...I'll try to join sometime! In the meantime, let's have a bowl of oatmeal together! I like cinnamon on top of mine! Hugs!

  18. Had to scratch my head on the joke but I do that all the time!
January is tough, a little anticlimactic after December and Christmas. I like February-it's my birthday month!! :-D

I'm allergic to oats. I wasn't always so I really miss a good breakfast of oatmeal with cream.

  19. I love these hodgepodge questionnaires that you share so often. They are great ways to "get to virtually know" each other. I must look for that. And you always make me laugh. I have to admit that from the list of things to eliminate, my number one would be people pleasing. It's a disease I have had for far too long and need to be rid of. I serve an audience of One and need to remember that far more often than I do. :) Happy February.

  20. Another vote for maple and brown sugar with your oatmeal. Delicious! Have a great week.

  21. Love those ten things to drop from your life. Especially trying to be a people pleaser, and comparing ourselves to others, and yes, getting rid of people who put us down. Just those three make a world of difference. I'm glad January is over, I had some fun days, but the entire month here has been one big grey cloud. I am one of those people who needs sunshine, so it's been tough. We finally got a beautiful sunny day yesterday, praise God! I felt like a million bucks instead of wondering if I should take a nap all day.

  22. Love the joke...I needed that one! I can't believe January is gone; I still have projects to finish and a birthday present for a friend that I'm quilting. That's going to be late! February is even shorter, but as long as there is chocolate, we can get through it! XOXO BTW--I'm thankful for your friendship!

  23. Ha-cute joke! We need more humor in our lives these days. January was a lot of fun here, but I've got a wicked cough now, hubs says from too much talking and not enough sleep. He is probably right. Have a great day!

  24. Oatmeal over here most mornings as well...from November until May. Then we switch to fresh fruit, yogurt and granola. We are creatures of habit.

Smiling here about your 'nothing on the docket' for February. I should likely knock a few things off of my February docket. Enjoy the month...one day at a time...as it unfolds!

  25. Oh my Vee, I so relate to your answer on #3....pray, pray, pray!
Happy month of February, my shared birthday friend! xx

  26. You and I hold essentially the same things sacred. Given the month I've had, your random thought did make me laugh out loud. Thanks for the chuckles and for visiting my blog page.

  27. An excellent response to #3, indeed, we can't change ourselves, our only hope is in the Lord's help! Oatmeal is something I enjoy to make, but we are more of an eggs and bacon family, being as I have so many chickens and eggs, lol! I hope you find something fun and exciting to do in February, hugs to you my friend :)
