A Haven for Vee

Where Comes the Call???

Golly, it's a good thing some of you don't mind chatty posts because that's about all I can come up with these days.

~no bricks in this photo~

Just so you'll know, I am not confused about what day of the week it is. Thursday, right? Usually, I try to post on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Tomorrow, my daughter needs a driver so I will be busy. Yes, that ulcer. Hopefully, they will get to the root of the problem and be willing to give her the medication that she needs. Healthcare these days! Don't even get me started.

(For those who have wondered about my father. He has moved from Rehab to my sister's home where he will continue to recover and hopes to move into an assisted living center when he is able.)

This morning, John and I were out in the yard early puttering with bricks.

This is the project I showed you a day or so ago. Now it's all finished with some minor adjustments to be made. These bricks came from John's cull pile at the Ponderosa. I think he secretly loves it when I have a need for something and he already has it stashed somewhere. It vindicates the saving of good things. He has always loved the Edison quote: To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.

It hasn't been all work and no play around here either. I had to document the first peony so tried to duplicate the Fotor collage of yesterday with a Photoscape one. Not quite the same, but good enough.

And to close...a Netflix recommendation from Hallmark: When Calls the Heart.

~*Abby's* Recommendation~

It is the story of Elizabeth who travels to a coal mining community out west to teach school. Just so happens that there's a handsome mountie on assignment there. This story is based on a Janette Oke book. Some of you will appreciate the irony here as I can not tolerate reading insipid love stories. However, at the end of a tiring day, I do enjoy watching a little something~something that isn't death, disease, destruction or murder. (Not that life is without its challenges out West!) Anyway, this perfectly filled the requirement.

I loved that Elizabeth journals so there are some enjoyable take-away lines. Here's one:

I've never felt so frightened in all my life, but my fear pales in comparison to how safe I felt in Jack's arms when he came to my rescue. It makes me realize that sometimes we need heroes in our lives, and sometimes, for the people we love, we actually have to become the hero.

Couldn't help tucking Jack in there again as he is not too difficult to look at. Ahem.

So do you have any fun video recommendations? Abby and I'd love to hear them!

  2. I saw that movie at Walmart. Since you like it I may buy it for my daughter's next birthday. Yes, he is easy on the eyes. I'm 60, I'm not blind. :D Nice movies that have some kind of plot are getting harder and harder to find. Did you ever see the Hallmark movie, "The Magic of Ordinary Days" ? Wonderful movie. I hope your daughter finds the help she needs. It's hard worrying about our kids! I like your brick border. We had one of those in Dallas, but one morning we got up to discover someone had stolen every one of our bricks! Go fig!

  3. I just caught up last night--the second season has been on public TV these past two months. Saturday night may be the final episode. If I miss them on TV, I watch them on the Hallmark app on my iPad. Have you ever looked for that? you may be able to see the whole season 2 that way. They don't stay there forever though so you may need a watch marathon. I'm not sure how many are there.

    1. Was so excited to download the app, despite that two-star approval rating; however, I am not allowed to watch because I do not pay for the Hallmark channel on my provider service. I have just the basic. Perhaps it will work for others so thank you for the suggestion!

  4. You gotta' love John--I wonder if he and my husband are related, lol. (N.O.T. that would mean that they share a loony bin, I didn't just say that, did I?)--ANYWAYS--no matter the posts, I love them, Vee. Blessings

  5. Oh my goodness, Vee, I'm reading that we're not alone. We can all still recognize a good-looking guy. The flower bed is lovely. Those bricks really make it pop.

  6. This series is coming to CBC in Canada this summer although I'm not sure when it starts. So, if you're a reader of Vee's blog and live in Canada you can see it on CBC Television. I'm looking forward to watching it. Your peonies are pretty now matter how you frame them Vee and I like the bricks around the flower bed. Very neat looking and so nice that John had them stashed away 'for such a time as this'. :-} We are waiting for a major thunderstorm to roll through NB this afternoon. It's mostly sunny and humid at the moment so it's nice to see the sun shining. I'm glad your father is recovering and will soon be in an assisted living facility. Have a blessed weekend.

  7. A very handsome neat brick border you have there, Vee. Men do love to save junk--although I would never refer to those lovely bricks as junk.
Pretty shades of pink in your well documented peony! My peonies are suffering from lack of sunlight. I don't know why I insist on planting sun loving plants in my shady yard. ♥

  8. I've been catching up on old movies that I miss while raising my seven children. I was too busy and too broke to go to the movies..so..this is my time. I so seldom watch TV. I know I'm probably missing a lot..but visiting folks like you I can usually get an idea of what is good watching when the time comes. The story line in the film you just spoke of reminded me of an old book from long ago "Mrs. Mike". I just recently sent it to my best friend in Arkansas. I always wonder where people are speaking of when they say "out West." Any specific state or just all of the Western states. ?? Thank so much for stopping by. My blog is nothing to scream about..that's for sure. Diana's book did keep my interest but it was extra interesting because I know her too. That part fascinated me. It was fun.

    1. Yes! I loved Mrs. Mike and this does put one in mind of that true story, though that book ended so sadly. The fictional community is set in Western Canada.

  9. Your peonies are gorgeous and the flower bed with brick border looks lovely. I need to get up off my lazies and weed mine.

  10. I have watched this on Hallmark but have never seen it as a continuing series...something else was on evidently...I like to catch things early on and not watch mid-stream...but then again, I missed most of the whole first season of Downton before I got hooked on season 2 and then went back. I wish I had done that with this series...I need to go back to the beginning on this one too I guess! Lovely brick project too... and I hope for the best concerning your daughter & dad. Oh yes....and I got on Fotor and played around a bit yesterday. Fun stuff!

  11. I sure love the peony bloom! Pretty brick work too. My John loves his pile of junk too - we have moved the same junk MANY times!!! lol I have read many of Ms. Oke's books and love them. I am one of those rare people who can't sit still to watch a movie!!!

  12. Chatty posts are fine. Better than me since my mind has been a total blank of late.
The place is looking grand Vee. It's a lot of work, isn't it. We're already having to replant the vegetable garden. It's been nice enjoying yellow squash, green beans, etc. again.
I haven't watched or heard of the show recommended. I tend to shy away from "romance" movies too. Now, anything English, I'm so there! And also any of the older American movies.
Hope your evening is fun and happy. ~:)

  13. Your peony is gorgeous! I'm enjoying all you gals who are farther north than me sharing your peonies as mine are finished now. Torrential storms hurried their season, which made me sad. I will have to see if I can find that series. Sounds like something the girls and I could watch together.

Your brick project looks good, John is likely quite pleased that he had what you needed to get this project done!

  14. No recommendations since I have not been watching anything these days.

Love your brick project...and smiled at the Edison quote. My dad lived by that quote as well! We moved onto his farm...and he left behind all his collections for us to be creative with. :)

    Lovely peonies!

  15. Vee your brickwork looks great, and that peony is gorgeous. I love peonies, but don't have any in my garden. I'm glad Pam mentioned that this series is coming to CBC, I'll have to watch for it... I watched a good movie this week on Netflix -"Boyhood". I hope all goes well for your daughter tomorrow.

  16. Edison forgot one more necessary ingredient: motivation. I have plenty of imagination and junk. I'm not an Oke fan. I've tried. I sure hope the doctors get to the bottom of this ulcer problem. Against my nature, I promise not to try to solve this problem. But I will pray for her.

  17. Put on your list to see the latest Cinderella, which will be out in video form soon I am sure - it is FABULOUS - a wonderful awesome and magical way of doing an old classic. I have seen it 6 times already- keep taking people to it, haha.

Love the brick work and saving junk and using it, yay - and your peony is amazing.

CRAZY week, not much time to read blogs - can't wait till things slow down. This past week I had my daughter's bridal shower, two days' worth of wedding florist appointments, babysat my youngest niece, and tomorrow heading to Indianapolis for the weekend for a tea party, back Sun morning for nephew's hs graduation party. Whew. I don't even want to think about next week. I miss blogging, but life goes on, yes?

Don't forget me, I will be back soon I promise. Hugs. ♥

  18. Your garden is looking very pretty and the brick border is a lovely addition.
I hope they are able to find some relief for your daughter. My dad had ulcers and though he wasn't one to complain, it was evident that he was suffering quite a bit from them.
Glad to hear an update on your dad. Hopefully all goes well at your sister's house.
Thanks for the Netflix recommendation. I wouldn't have thought I would like something like this either, but it does sound like it might be a good one. Will have to check for it on the Hallmark channel.

  19. I have this on my Netflix queue, thanks for the recommendation! I love a well defined flower bed and that Edison quote is a new favorite. With all the junk I have stashed, clearly I am about to invent something amazing ;)

  20. Great job on the bricks, to you and John! The peony is sooo pretty, too. I love When Calls the Heart and look forward to watching every Saturday evening. In July, the series Cedar Cove, starts up again. Have you watched that one? The series comes from the books by Debbie Macomber, and it's on the Hallmark channel, also.

  21. We just finished watching that series too, and also LOVED it!! Soo excited to hear there is a season 2 coming....didn't know that. YAY! Wish there were more shows like this one. Perfect entertainment in my opinion. Loving your brick work. Your John sounds like my Jeff....shouldn't be shocking considering they are married to kindred spirits, lol....as he is ALWAYS sooo happy to wisk out something he saved SURE it would be needed or wanted again. Now what he needs though is a better and bigger place to store it all, lol.. Enjoy your week-end Vee!

  22. I loved that Edison quote! I had never heard it before. Your peony is beautiful.

  23. You may have only two peonies but this one makes up for the rest - what a gorgeous specimen! Nice work on the brick edging, great team work.
We don't have the Hallmark channel here and the Canadian Netflix isn't as good as the U.S. version...no more to be said. I watch little TV in the summer but read Pam's comment so may record the series.

  24. I just finished watching this and am on the search for a new one as well. Looking forward to watching season two.

  25. I love your puttering! And, I am a big Hallmark Channel watcher; love When Calls the Heart and Signed, Sealed and Delivered! They're wholesome and remind me of the shows I watched when I was growing up--no profanity and nudity! Happy Weekend, dear friend, XOXO

  26. I like chatty posts!!! I hope that all goes well for your daughter today - or has gone well depending on when you read this. Your brick edging looks great, and is a good use for those bricks, but I understand what you mean about the annoying thing! Your peony - and mosaic - are beautiful!!! xx

  27. Like the brick edging around you garden.
I'm passing the quote on to Ken - he will LOVE it. : )
I'll put When Calls the Heart of my Netflix queue. My queue needs some more on it.

  28. Well, if we HAVE to look at Jack .... (smile). My husband and I enjoy this series, too.

Thanks for the quote by Thomas Edison. I don't think I've heard it before but am adding it to my collection of favorite quotes.

I hope your daughter's health improves.

  29. Hi Vee!

I absolutely love Peonies, and your first one was a keeper!
I didn't watch, When calls the Heart, but definitely plan on watching it on Netflix, it looks like one of those really good shows to watch on a hot day, while I'm hibernating in the house.
It always feels so good to get a job done, and your brick edging looks very nice! I love the quote, fits perfectly with my life!

    Have a great week-end!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  31. Love the brick border on that planter and of course the quote! We've got a few piles of junk around here.
The peonies are just lovely. I never tire of seeing their full blooms! Have a wonderful weekend!!

  32. Your flowers are beautiful...with the winter you had, I wondered if flowers were even left alive. I see they were.
    Haven't see the series....

  33. Okay Vee, well it looks like I started something here with "When Calls the Heart". There is so much filth on television and movies, it was a refreshing series to watch. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Love your peonies and of course the brick border. Praying for your daughter. ~ Abby

  34. I must see if it's on Netflix...I hope so!

  35. I hope that your daughter has gotten some help and the appropriate medications! Health care is quite the ...ummmm...challenge? It is so unnecessarily complicated.

Your brick border looks lovely! I am such a fan of brick. It is classic and makes everything look so tidy.

John and Ron are two peas in a pod. No wonder they had so much to talk about when we met! (I am going to share that Edison quote with Ron.)

  36. Your brick work looks lovely Vee! I love borders like that. It's always so satisfying when creating a project like that! Now you can sit back and enjoy it. I have not watched When Calls the Heart or anything else of late for that matter. I must make a note because it sounds wonderful.

  37. I like your brick border, Vee! Very nicely done. Hope your daughter is feeling better. Being sick is no fun at all. I know she's glad she can count on you to be there for her. That's what moms (and daughters, in other situations) do...family...we're there for each other.
    Blessings, Beth

  38. Hello Vee, Hope we see more of your flowers! And that quote is really a good one, as so many times a nice pile of good junk has inspired me and have saved us some money.

  39. Oh I do need to consider bricks or boulders on the borders of the beds. Yours looks very nice.
    T he Peonies are beautiful!

  40. It's so hard to find good entertainment. We've been watching out DVDs of Downton Abbey...AGAIN! And I just requested Call the Midwife season 1 from my library. I'm going to make a list of what you and others have mentioned in the comments. Sweet hugs, Diane

  41. Hi Dear Vee,

I've finally gotten over here for a visit. Whew, what a week this has been! I'm so sorry about your daughter's ulcer, and I know exactly what you mean about the healthcare thing. It's costing us more than it ever did -- so glad we could help some politicians out with their agendas. I hope your daughter (and your father) will soon be better!

Your brick border around the flower bed looks great, and your peonies are gorgeous. I've had a serious case of peony envy this spring, having seen lots of gorgeous ones all over blogland. ;) I love the Thomas Edison quote; I must share with my husband because he'll definitely appreciate it! I haven't heard of that movie, but thanks for the tip. :)

I hope you have a good day, my friend, and thanks for your visits this week.

    Warm hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor
