Small Bouquets

Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote I will be the gladdest thing under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers and not pick one.

~from the poem Afternoon on a Hill

~bathroom bouquet~

Edna (a Maine poet who lived from 1892–1950) and I are not in agreement these days. While I am pretty glad, I have picked quite a few flowers lately. I enjoy little bouquets and must have one on the kitchen windowsill, on the bathroom windowsill, and often on the dresser in the bedroom, too. It doesn't have to be too much. Simple is very good.

~kitchen windowsill~

When the rain comes and beats them down, I rescue them. The peonies  bouquet has lasted three days following some great tips I learned from Lovella and Michele.

I like to find a unique vase. The bathroom bouquet is in a vintage perfume bottle and the kitchen one is in a transferware mug.

It's a cool, rainy day here and I will be in my sewing room whipping up some aprons for two pretty little greatgirlies. Yes, John is a great-grandfather eight times over.

Wishing you a wonderful Monday!

  1. Even on those dark rainy days, flowers bring a smile to our face. Yours are so pretty and thanks for sharing today.

  2. It is definitely worth rescuing a peony from the rain!! It makes a beautiful arrangement! xx

  3. I love to pick fresh flowers, and yours are just right! I remember when I moved to Texas from California and the blue bonnets came in the spring. I stopped on the highway and picked the very prettiest, and later found out it is illegal to pick wildflowers in Texas! Now I just drive by and admire them. :)

  7. How I love fresh flowers in the home too....yours are soo pretty and just perfect. We had a little rain last week which was kind of shocking for us but it sure was nice even if it was muggy. We are heating up this week into the ninety's....here we go....Enjoy your week Vee!

  8. You have inspired me to get out there and cut some little bouquets. As much as I love them, I tend to forget to cut them. Yours are so pretty and sure to bring smiles to all who spot them. I particularly like the peony in the transferware mug.
Have fun in the sewing room today.

  10. Your little bouquets are so pretty, Vee. I love having fresh flowers in the house too. Like you, I like to have a mini-bouquet in my kitchen window and IF I had a bathroom window, I would surely have one there as well :) I wish we had some of your rain and cool air...it is HOT, HOT, HOT here...high 90's and about 105 degree heat index. I'll take your cool air anyday! Enjoy your sewing. Are we going to be privy to your finished creations??

  11. I also love little bouquets. Your vases are so pretty. I can't grow flowers of my own so I have to occasionally treat myself to a bouquet of something. Have a blessed week.

  12. Smal bouquets make me happy, too, Vee. I have one by my kitchen sink and a larger one by my late beloved's picture. I especially love your arrangement in the teacup! Happy Monday to you!

  13. I love this idea, Vee!! Why not use those blooms to add life and cheer to the indoors too? And your choice of vessels is lovely too!

(I'd love to enjoy your cool, rainy day today. There is condensation on my French door window already...not a good sign.)

  14. I am intrigued by your bathroom curtains. They appear to be stained glass. Lovely! ~ I also rescue flowers that have broken off from a main stem. They become little bouquets in our home. Our yard is small so I don't have many extra flowers for indoors, but enjoy them every evening we sit outdoors. I need a row of zinnias so I can have indoor bouquets all summer long.

    1. My bathroom curtain is cut work embroidery. I don't think that anyone could really see in, but because it wigged me out a little, I sewed a panel of fabric behind the cut work. It makes me feel better. ☺

  15. I grow lots of flowers so that I can cut some of them, and bring them in! I love having some by the sink in the kitchen, in the living room, in the bathrooms, etc. Often mine are little too. But sweet and they make me happy!

Will you show us your little aprons? I'd love to see them!

  16. I think you'd agree ... it's important to have fresh flowers in the house ... wherever! Loved seeing your bouquets. We have heavy rains coming (yet again) and one of my crocosmia is just starting to think about blooming. Ugh..... Happy Monday!

  17. Love that bouquet in the transferware mug! I enjoy bringing flowers in. You just gave me an idea to freshen up things to greet our overnight company with little (real little) vases of lavender in their bedrooms and the bathroom. 8 great grands! Wow! That's great... My pops is going on six.
    Have a wonderful week!

  18. I agree Vee, I pick the flowers too! That's why I have a garden. If I'm rescuing them from heavy rain or wind, I feel even better about it. There's nothing nicer in the home than fresh flowers.

  19. Clipping flowers and greenery from my garden to use in the house is one of the pleasures of summer. Love the new look here on your blog - so spare and clean. Enjoy your day in the sewing room. I'll be out in the garden, whacking and clipping and yanking out some of the exuberant partying that went on in my absence.

  20. Flower bouquets do cheer up a room. I'm so lazy these days all I use are artificials (I know, "heretic"! ha ha). Sometimes I want to replace the grass outside with artificial too. My husband would shot me for sure. *grin* Hope your day is happy and carefree. ~:)

  22. So pretty ... I love small nosegays ... in old bottles or tea cups or floating in flat bowls. Your peony bouquet is just lovely!

  23. Love the way you have the flowers displayed. It is amazing at how it truly doesn't take much to make something look so pretty. It doesn't have to be much for me either Vee. I picked some lily's recently and just had a few in a pretty pink vase and it the whole room just gleamed. Aprons for the grandgirls sounds like fun! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  24. Love the quote. Sometimes its enough to be in the presence of beauty. Sometimes you like to have a bouquet on the windowsill.

  26. Oh my, nothing like having fresh flowers around to make us happy! You must post pictures of the aprons!

  27. I love fresh flowers and am quite giddy at the moment: my daisies are blooming and I have tons coming on! This is the first year for them and I am so excited!

  28. I'm afraid I have never had Edna's constraint either. My philosophy being to leave some to enjoy when I am outdoors but by all means to bring some in so I can enjoy them there. If a flower blooms in the woods and there is no one there to see it, is it still pretty? Congrats on adding to the grands!

  29. Vee, I think we are all in agreement with your lovely arrangements today. I like to do the same thing. Small bottles are great for little beauties. Your transferware mug is just lovely.
Congratulations to John on his greats! I hope you share your handwork with us. ♥

  30. I can smell the sweet scent from those peonies from here! The rain always seems to beat mine down too and why not enjoy them indoors! Love your ideas for containers too!

  31. I do love all your little bouquets, and especially like the one in the cup on the kitchen windowsill...Or perhaps I especially like the mug. It is very delicate and the color are subtle.

  32. So beautiful ... you are so creative Vee ... and I too love little vases of any kind of flowers that are available even the wildflowers make a pretty little vase to put in a spot to brighten it up on a summer day.

  33. Oh Vee...how is something so simplistic so beautiful......lovely, soft photos! What a wonderful way to begin the week! Thank you!

  34. So pretty. I too like little bouquets around the house. : )

  35. So Vee, did you soak your peonies? I never do which explains the ants darting around on the kitchen window sill. LOL Well, I give them a good shake before bringing in which should dislodge the little hitchhikers.
I've been cutting lots of peonies, better than drooping from the rain and soon I'll be adding more flowers from the garden. Little bouquets about really are uplifting aren't they?

  37. John is truly blessed! My new granddaughter arrived last week--she is so little-7 pounds. 3 oz, but it is easy to forget how small they are at birth. We are al in love with her!

My flower garden is a bust --nothing is growing well at all, but wildflowers are making appearances all over the trails and meadows. They are so beautiful!

  38. I'm preferring my bouquets small these days too. You can spread the love around more that way. Enjoy the rain and sewing. It hit 100 here today. ugh.

  39. Oh I so agree with you on rescuing blooms from getting battered from the rain! Your bouquets are so pretty! I enjoyed stopping by your blog here today! Wishing you a lovely week! Nicole

  40. I am enjoying catching up this morning, love the previous post, your garden is looking so beautiful, a wonderful job with the bricks. I saw a few episodes of Then Call the Heart while I was working really like it.There are so few programs worth watching anymore, even the news!
    I
I have tried growing peonies, but not much luck, I think our weather is too hot and humid, ~smiling~ speaking of which we hit 101 yesterday and today 104 is predicted, I think I might just move to Maine if this continues. ~smile~
Like you I am a rescuer of blooms, recently while clipping the roses I did it with my eyes shut tight.~smile~
Hope all is well around your place!
    Much love,
    Sue

  41. That is such a good idea, Vee. I tend not to be a picker because as soon as they're picked, they start to die. On the other hand, they're going to die on the 'vine' anyway, so why not bring in a few blossoms. Yes! I'll do it this morning. Love the peony in the small vase. SO pretty!

  42. I really wish I could trade some of our sunshine for a little of your rain. We need it so desperately...and there is nothing but hot, sunny weather in the forecast. I love having fresh flowers inside as well...usually wee bouquets in a 'salt shaker' vase for the powder room and a larger one on the dining table. Right now it is red roses all around...and a lavender bouquet on the front porch. Enjoy your time at the sewing machine.

  43. I've been bringing in a few between rains that aren't too droopy! Hey, congrats on the great grands.

  44. I think flowers should be brought inside too! I love your little kitchen bowl-cup? I can't tell, but it's pretty.

  45. I do love that line of poetry, Vee, and I never knew that Edna St. Vincent Millay was from Maine. I'm with you -- picking a few is good. :) The peonies in the transferware mug are perfect, and I too, love to find unusual containers for mine. Your perfume bottle is so pretty, and I love your bathroom curtain. I especially noticed because I need new curtains for our bathrooms. ;)

Thanks for sharing, Vee, and have a great day!

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor
