A Haven for Vee

Ditto

Late in the night I was still putting the final touches on this tea cozy. I'm so happy that it is finished and that I can now send it with joy to Miss Sandy. I was up early this morning to grab enough light to take a reasonable photo. This project has been promised for over a year. Over a year. *thud*

Heading for Arkansas

ETA: 9/21/2011 You'll find Miss Sandy's sweet thank you here at Quill Cottage.

Late yesterday afternoon, I took a lot of photos to share the new kitchen window and what's going on with John's work on the house. Now you'll want to throttle me, but I'm waiting on most of it because it'll look so much better in just a few days. Here's a mere hint:

new insulation

Much of the delay is because John is reinsulating the house. It is labor intensive and time consuming. Soon, though, I can show this side completely done and that will include my new kitchen window from outside.

Let's move on to other sights around the yard, shall we?

Looking Up

First of all, here it is the middle of September already and the leaves are still green. Usually, they have begun to change. How about in your corner? This alarms me a bit and Deanna knows why. ☺

Back Yard

The sweet potato vine is a plant new to me and suggested by Deanna (Creekside Cottage). I've been quite pleased with them and am looking forward to their autumn colors.

Late Afternoon Wave Petunias

The petunias are looking their best of the entire summer; this picture just isn't the best. I repotted them when they began to look bedraggled in July. That has made a world of difference. They had been terribly root bound. I've just about decided, once and for all, that any potted plant in my possession is going to get repotted immediately upon arrival at The Haven.

Touched by Fire

This is my favorite photo of the day. A few minutes after I'd come inside to get back to work on all things tea, I glanced outside and saw that the sinking sun was now highlighting and shining through the blossoms. So pretty.

Did you see that Melissa at The Inspired Room is having her annual Fall Nesting Party tomorrow? (Check my sidebar for the link.) This year, the time sneaked up on her so it's a bit of a late notice.  Still, I'm going to try to participate and here is a preview.

To the left you see a pitcher. It belonged to my grandmother and it appears to be the size for mixing cocktails or martinis or something. Seasons and scenes are represented and I'm showing you autumn's scene with a hunting dog, an Eastern Spruce, and a hunter prepared to shoot. The photo should enlarge to see the details.
The photo on the right shows my Eastern Spruce. The only tree on my property other than bushes. I am easily charmed by such coincidences.
Join me tomorrow for The Fall Nesting Party and won't you consider participating, too?

  1. The tea cozy looks great, our leaves are changing, already! Love the glass pitcher, I have a similar one in shape, no tree engraved on it though...looking forward to seeing the reno pictures :)
    Have a lovely day

  2. What a sweet tea cozy ^& such lovely vintage touches. She'll be tickled, I am sure. Anxious to see your window & changes. Yes, autumn has taken an early visit here also ... I believe it is because we were soooo terribly dry all summer. So love the changes of each season ...

    Have a great weekend ~

  3. "Touched By Fire" Photo... Super camera catch! Love it when we see a fast-fleeting scene, and run and catch it. :-) Great feeling of accomplishment.

Not too much leaf color change yet, in "my neck of the woods." Small, yellow leaves are falling and it's good we got the pool covered. But not much COLOR.

But also, I think it's early and fine.

Still-green-leaves by now, alarms you somehow. I went over and read in Deanna's blog, 'cause you said she knows why you feel this way. But didn't find anything (in her posts) which gives me a clue. Ahhh yes, Vee is being vague again. -grin-

OK, I know the drill. I come back here tomorrow and look for an answer to my question, in your comments. ☺

Again, it's *Me*, not blogging at present, so must use link to old blog, to comment here.

  4. A lovely tea cozy you have made. Sandi is going to be thrilled.

Your flowers are lovely.....especially that one with the sun doing its artistic thing.

Hoping the leaves get on to changing in time for the road trip! Hugs. Wish I was coming in her suitcase! On second thought, that would be a bit snug.

  5. The tea cozy turned out wonderful and I am sure it was worth the wait! Your purple flowers are so pretty....

We are getting little bits of color around here. Some of my bushes out front are turning red.

  6. Oh Vee!!!!!!! I <3 that tea cozy!!!! It is so shabb-a-licious! Gorgeous and worth the wait, I'm sure. :)

Our leaves are turning colour here in Ontario. I hope that they don't go too fast! I love Autumn but, it's just so fleeting.

I'm on my way to check out the "Fall Nesting Party"....

  8. Doesn't it make you feel good to finish something? I'd like to experience that! Your house is coming along great. Your husband must be a workhorse. And your outdoor plants are so pretty. Ours burned up recently and the leaves are falling off the trees in droves due to the dry spell. I need to rake!
I didn't put out any annuals this year and I missed the color.
    I'm enjoying yours. :D

  9. Cozy turned out great - I know Miss Sandy will enjoy it. Hey, when you have to wait for something it makes it all the more fun when you get it!

Our leaves are turning - LOOSE, that is. Some are having an early fall, the trees are so stressed the leaves are falling, turning brown, lots of dead trees... so sad. I fear our autumn is going to be not so very pretty this year. So you folks up there in the north please send us lots of beautiful fall color pictures!

Off to check out the Nesting Party! Good photos today, Vee - love the sun coming through the petunias!

  10. I thought Aunt Amelia was back there for a minute - I'll bet she'll be back - she can't stand not knowing what-all's going on!
    HI AUNT AMELIA!

  11. Hello Vee...been away too long. Just catching up on blogs...sounds like everything is well in your neck of the woods. We are having a warm September too, LOVE it!!! Hope October is mild too.

  12. Good job...on the tea cozy!

Our leaves are green over here as well...for the most part. But then again...it seems summer just barely arrived. I had pumpkin pie last night for the first time this year...and I'm definitely ready for that! Slowly we switch to fall mode.

I have been using potato vines in my planters for years...lime coloured or maroon...and they always look great. I put lime potato vines with a planter of coleus...no flowers but amazing colour!

  13. Gorgeous Tea Cozy, Vee!

Can't wait to see your new window. Looks like you'll have a lovely view!

  14. Thanks for another lovely stroll about your home and garden. I too have been impressed by sweet potato vines and quite pleased to find so many varieties in our local nursery...black leaves, wine colored, stripped...seems like there is a new kind available each time I visit.

Very little color changd here too. A hint of golden hue on the leaves at sunset but otherwise all is still robust free. Hmmmm...

  15. The tea cozy is really lovely. And your flowers are still very pretty.

What does the leaves still being so green mean? Most of ours here in mid-MO are still green depending on what kind of tree it is, but I see some changes in color every day. In Branson, I noticed some of the leaves are already turning brown so I fear the color won't be very good this year.

Can I borrow John when he finishes the projects at your house? We're still waiting for the fella to do our bathroom! And, of course, I have scads more things I'd like to have done. :D

  16. Yippee for the completed tea cozy and photo! Love the petunia shot. Looking forward to seeing that window...

  17. It must be a good feeling to finish your tea cozies. They sure did turn out nice.

I am looking forward to the reveal of the new window and home renovation. John has been working hard.

Your petunia photo turned out gorgeous. Isn't it interesting how timing can be everything when taking a good photo.

A fall nesting party sounds like great fun. I'm not sure if I'll be able to participate, but I think I can do a bit of visiting.

  18. The tea cozy was worth the wait ..vee--it is very pretty and I'm sure Sandi will love it!

I can't wait to see your new kitchen window -- I bet you will have a nice view through it. My kitchen window is on the side of my house and faces my neighbors kitchen window. I feel like a voyeur every time I wash the dishes..lol!

The trees don't get color here till late October, sometimes early November. I'm going to be in warm places those dates, so I will be missing much of my favorite time of the year...boo.

  19. I adore your tea cozies! Beautiful!

I am praying those leaves start to turn this week!!!!

Your Sweet Potato vines are wonderful! They look great! Do you know I could not find even one this year around here!

Can't wait to see how your new window looks when it is all done.

I am going to join Melissa tomorrow too!

    Fun Stuff!

  20. The tea cosy is just beautiful, I don't think I'd be able to use it for its original purpose, I'd just have to show it off as a lovely ornament!

  21. Some lucky lady is going to get that beautiful tea cozy! Oh, one of these days I'll be able to get back to recreational sewing again! The petunias are quite stunning. Purple waves are one of my favorites! Speaking of the color changes, I am wondering how the fall colors are coming along up in eastern Canada where we'll be in another week.

  22. Hi Vee,

Congratulations...you won the Fabric Design Contest. I can't wait to work with you on your favorite design.

Your photos of those petunias are gorgeous. I love that pitcher, with the etching on the glass. It's chilly tonight already, so I guess you are having cooler weather too.

I have a pumpkin post, so I'll join you tomorrow A.M. My sister and her husband are visiting, so I'll see you on Monday.

I can't wait to see what you design, maybe we'll design several.

    Karen

    Love your use of *thud...:))

The flowers are so pretty. I am glad you have them...and I am determined to have a Sweet Potato plant come spring.

Oh, Shoot..I didn't know about the Fall Nesting Party. No matter how hard I try, I just can't play in all of 'em...:(

  24. Those wave petunias of yours are absolutely beautiful, picture perfect. The pitcher of your grandmother's, certainly a keepsake, meant for the china cabinet. New kitchen window? Can't wait!

  25. Green Green Green here too. I have so enjoyed our late summer and now the evenings are starting to feel a bit cool. I wore a cardigan today when I ran to town.

Oh..the work on the house is so wonderful. I love the tease and am looking forward to seeing it all done.

  26. Beautiful tea cozy, Vee, well worth the wait. your flowers are absolutely beautiful, What do you feed them? I am still thinking about your mailbox and how beautiful it is.The heat has really taken a toll on ours,. The extra insulation will certainly be worth the wait, come this winter. As always a joy to visit.

  27. Look at you with the little pine trees between paragraphs! They're soo cute!
Love the cozy and so will she.
    A new window!? How lucky! I have always wanted a kitchen window, but with one of the prior add-ons (before we bought the house) that's not possible 'cos they added a room on the back. {I'd give up that room for just one gorgeous kitchen window..}

Can't wait to see more photos:-)

  28. Sue, I feed my flowers Osmocote and rarely provide them anything further because it says it sustains them for 3 months. Soon, I'll be covering them up for the night and hoping that they won't get touched by frost. It's much too soon for them to be gone.

  29. Colleen, you need to create your own window. Frame a mirror and add a curtain. I bet that you could fake yourself out!

  30. Now that's a pretty tea cozy. I like the vintagey look it has.

We're on a little getaway and I'm spending a quiet evening at a relative's house reading a few blogs while she works on other things. When we get home later this week I am going to do a little fall decorating - this trip (out to Alberta) has inspired me - especially since we had to SCRAPE the ICE off our car windows this morning. Yikes!
