September: it was the most beautiful of words... evoking orange-flowers, swallows, and regret.
~Alexander Theroux
The weather certainly feels like September. Much cooler days and blessedly cooler nights and when the breeze blows there is just the hint of change to come. Thing is, as much as I love the next season, I'm not ready to let summer go.
Reading around Blogdom yesterday, I got that same sense from many of you north of Kansas. There's the desire to hold onto what precious little summer we enjoyed and slip slowly into autumn.
One thing I am truly looking forward to is the changing light. It happens when the leaves turn golden and the house fills with liquid sunshine. From the look of my doorstep where the leaves are assembling daily, that's a work already in progress.
My sensibilities change, too, in autumn. I'm looking for warmer colors and putting away the pastels and pinks of spring and summer, but sloooooowly.
Doily Wreath Wearing Autumn Garb
Snack Mat and a Cup of Tea
When I work on new sewing projects like the snack mats I'm finding fun, I look for autumn colors and I've fished out an autumn tea cup or two.
Blogging seems more important in autumn. There used to be a commercial for sunrooms where a late middle-aged couple described their vacation travels as less than satisfactory in many ways. The gentleman would then report that he said to his wife, "That's just about enough of this." They built a sunroom and vacation year 'round right there in their own home. Well that's sort of how I'm feeling about my self-imposed exile: That's just about enough of this. I'm feeling better, exercising more, reading more, getting things accomplished in small doses. I think that I am ready to be a little more present here. If I find myself slipping down that slippery slope to a bad back, weight gain, and inactivity, I'll impose another absence.
After TS Lee left, it has been darn right refreshingly nice here. (in the 60's)--to bad that won't last. But, like you, I have started to put the summer stuff/things away and put the fall stuff out. We are also activily searching for a new place to live, although the lease isn't up till April. Def. know where/what neighborhoods we don't want to live. lol--miss you Vee. Blessings
ReplyDeleteMorning Vee,
ReplyDeleteI have been on some sort of journey myself here! Not sure what! Getting older, kids getting older, losing a parent...seems everything, not just the seasons are changing. Haven't blogged in awhile. Just getting back into that. I do visit blogs on occasion and am always happy to see a new post from you! Personally, I am ready for the hot days of summer to be over. I love fall and wouldn't mind living somewhere where it's fall all year long! Wonder what that means? Anyway, hope your day is delightful as well!
I am hanging on to summer with all my might! I do love autunm, but it seems summer raced by so fast, I didn't have time to enjoy it. hmmmmm maybe because I spent a lot of it on the computer. I think you hit the nail on the head Vee..

Thanks for the heads up. Now we'll know why you are missing. ;)
ReplyDeleteYour beautiful description of fall brought out the longing in my heart again too.. If it weren't for the illusive tomatoes I could just slip comfortably into it with you. Do you know I only just harvested 2 more this week? That makes a grand total of ... 3! There are hundreds on the plants!! Sigh.
Blessings, Debbie
Well heck, I am sick in bed and saw your blog pop up and it said, "posted four minutes ago." Ah ha, I thought, I'll be the first to post a comment with Vee. Not a chance.
ReplyDeleteVee, I know the weight gain bad back thing. I try to walk two times a day and have been racking up some mileage and feeling more fit. Otherwise, I sit at my computer or my drafting table working on my illustrations. Here in Maine I don't have my garden to keep me in shape...keep moving and feel great!
We were hit so hard by salt spray that autumn is here, but all in shades of brown. So sad.
Stay well,
Sharon-come-lately
"That's just about enough of this."
ReplyDeleteExcellent news my Dear.
You used your self-imposed *exile*, to learn different patterns. More healthy-all-round patterns. Purrrfect. :-)
And if your bod starts telling you that you're slipping backwards, you will know that a wee bit more of self-imposed *exile* will turn-everything-to-rights again.
How is that for doing a lot of accomplishing, in a pretty short time?!? "Hat's off" to you!!!
And lots and lots of gentle September hugs...
We are having a hint of fall here...but summer comes back on Friday...high 90's! Today the windows are open and I am enjoying hearing the high school band play as they prepare for football...so it truly is fall.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back and enjoy your return to exercising...I am back on an exercise routine also..YEA! enjoy blogland.
And happy September to you! It's crazy that Saturday it was a near 100 degrees here and today it is 65. I LOVE IT! I live for this time of year. =) Always something beautiful to find. Stepping back is so hard. The computer is often my only escape from reality .... kids, sports, kids, school, did I mention kids? And now we are moving to South Carolina. Well, Audley is moving. We will go in February after basketball season. Until then I get to play single mom.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to catching up with your posts!
we have even had a glimpse of fall way down
ReplyDeletehere, but it's just a tease. i think it is harder
to blog in the summer, because there is so
much more 'doing.'
your girdle comment made me smile! i
accidentally posted something a few weeks
ago that i meant to save.
September has always marked getting back on track for me. Glad to see you back...
ReplyDeleteκαλή μου φίλη το blog σου είμαι πολύ πολύ όμορφο!!!
ReplyDeleteσου εύχομαι καλό φθινόπωρο!!!
σου στέλνω τα φιλιά μου!!!!
Vee,
ReplyDeleteI was just about to send you an email! I have not been blogging as much. This weather makes me lazy. I have been reading and doing little putzy things....I need sunshine.
Carol
Our summer was so hot that I don't mind if it slips into our past quickly. We are finally experiencing cooler weather and it feels wonderful. I've aready decorated the front door with a autumn wreath. I do dread a long cold winter though.
ReplyDeleteAhhh, yes, Christine, but then you are south of Kansas. I understand completely.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quotation you put at the top of the post. September evokes all kinds of nostalgia.
ReplyDeleteWe're enjoying the warmest temperatures of the summer these days. I'm happy to enjoy a bit more summer. But the nights are cool and there is a definite slant to the sunshine.
I'm happy that you are feeling more in control of things in your life.
Good news, indeed, that you are going to be around more.
ReplyDeleteI am loving the change of season - the cooler weather is welcome!
Now, if we can get the rain out of here!!!!
Looking forward to October!
Deanna
Lovely September quote, Vee! I am writng it down in my quotation notebook..thanks!
ReplyDeleteI think we all need a blog break now and then to keep it fun! While I was away in Colorado I had very little computer time as I shuffled between my son's and my daughter's homes every day, and spent time playing with my grandsons. It was a welcome break, and now I feel much more energized on my blog.
I do love autumn...much more than summer..although both seasons seem to pass too quickly! I don't decorate for fall until late September and I absolutely refuse to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving!
There is so much to look forward to -- the holidays are always so much fun!
Good to see you back again, Vee. I must say I admire you for stepping away for a bit. I am often tempted, but so far haven't been too successful. It's amazing to me sometimes how quickly the time passes while blogging.
ReplyDeleteI love your little snack mat. What a pretty piece to set your cup of tea on.
My wish would be to live where it's fall all the time. I love it. Love the clothes, the feel of the air, the light..but then I'd probably miss the snow on a clear, cold day and the summer sounds and laundry on the line. Guess God knew exactly what He was doing with the seasons..when we get tired of one..He sends another!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see you back Vee, we have been having early fall... cool mornings and evenings with warm days sandwiched in between, so I decided to leap into fall last week, and put up my fall decorations. This has been the longest and hottest summer, for us and I am so happy to say good bye.Your summer has been short lived and I say enjoy every moment.
ReplyDeleteI have so missed you,
Hugs,
Sue
I'm so glad that you're looking forward to blogging again. I'm so glad that we had a long holiday weekend because I look forward to sharing a morning cup of coffee with you!
ReplyDeleteI love your floral dividers.
I'm a treadmill exerciser, but this morning I got on the eliptical machine and will let Keith know tonight that it's more like a torture machine. I was thinking that it would build bicycle riding strength, but I'm not sure I need to get it that way. Hope you're enjoying the type of exercise you've chosen.
It was cool and cloudy here today but it was a nice change! I love seeing your photos and hearing your news! Don't go far! ♥
ReplyDeleteHi Vee, nice to see you. I'm glad you're back on track with your health and exercise and blogging. I noticed a lot of coloured leaves on the driveway this morning. However, our flowers are so beautiful now you wouldn't know summer is almost gone! I've slacked off in walking for the past 2 weeks with our family visiting so will have to get back on track next week for sure. Take care. Blessings, Pamela
ReplyDeleteVee
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad we will be seeing more of you again.
It has been in the 40's here for the last three mornings, but nice 70's during the day. I am finally welcoming it with open arms.
Love your doily wreath!
Glad to hear that you are doing well although I do miss my daily glimpses into your life.
ReplyDeleteLeann
Welcome back, sweetie! I am so enjoying the cooler temperatures now. I'm ready to start walking around the villa circle again!
ReplyDeleteWell, as you may know, the state of Texas is burning up.
ReplyDeleteThis has been the most undesirable summer I have ever spent, in my whole entire, loooong life..so I am more than ready to let summer go.
Our weather has been much cooler and that makes Mr. Sweet and I want to get out more..walks on the park track have been unheard of during the high heat...but now, it is pleasant, in the evenings.
Glad you are feeling more like posting. Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do. :))
hugs, bj
Lovely post, Vee. You put the changing of the seasons into words so beautifully. Your snack mat is adorable, too. I've been making something similar lately, little trivets or table runners out of fabric scraps, to go with the flowers we're picking from the garden. Fun :) Do you have instructions anywhere for your snack mats? Would love to try one.
ReplyDeleteMissed you, but know that breaks are sometimes necessary. Glad you are feeling better. You are right. Blogging is more important in the autumn (and winter and wet spring) when it is unpleasant to get out and about.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're ok! And yes, there is a touch of Autumn in the air :)
ReplyDeleteAn ittty bitty touch of fall here in Texas, along with a lot of smoke from all the fires.
ReplyDeleteIts been several days now since we've had triple digit temps.... YEA!
Good to have you back.....but I sure understand about needing a break!
I'm with you. I'm not ready for the colder weather. Although cooler weather is fine. We just started to experience it for a day before TS Lee and these going on 5 days of rain stay here, floods abound, traffic a mess - for this area, that's serious. Welcome back, I've missed you. We'll push you out of Blogdom it you spend too much time here, no worries. Looking forward to seeing more of your snackmats and snappy posts!
ReplyDeleteSomehow the early-dark evening make blogging a more attractive activity than when the sun is still out at 9 pm. It sounds like you have a sensible plan - we should all follow it.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, Vee! Snack mat? I like that idea...new to me. It looks like a mini-placemat.
