At six seconds after 4:05 p.m. yesterday afternoon the numbers in the time and date could be arranged so that it read 04:05:06 07/08/09. This sequence will not be repeated in this manner again this century. (source) Pretty special timing for my first wedding anniversary and Mary's thirtieth, don't you agree?
Yes, that was neat and all, but hardly what I was looking forward to. Our little camping trip was down the tubes because of the torrents of rain and the blast of cold Canadian air (yes, we blame all blasts of cold air on the poor Canadians). We stayed home and I fell into a deep, dark funk while John went off to work as per usual. Hrrrummmphhhfffttt...
So basically he and I spent a quiet, cool, rainy day. A rainy day is nothing unusual this summer. In fact, it is the norm. The flowers are waterlogged and beaten down. The slugs are having a heyday. The basement smells. The spirits sink even as the rivers rise.
It felt all so very
The sun did not shine
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold wet day.
I sat there with John
We sat there, we two.
And I said, "How I wish
We had something to do!"
from The Cat in the Hat with liberties
Besides playing footsies that is...
But to allow an anniversary to float by without taking special note of it? Not to honor nor cherish it? We do not fool ourselves, John and I, having come to this point in our lives and marrying each other well beyond our middle age. We understand a little what it means to number our days. Oh! Did I tell you that the second great-grand was born last week so now John has one of each...a little great-grandson and a little great-granddaughter? They are some kind of cute now let me tell you.
Okay, so we set off for Portland. This was John's choice; my head was empty. (I heard that!) Of course, I'm quite certain that John didn't know the following fact when we left...
"So far this month, every day has been warmer at Fairbanks, Alaska, than at Portland, Maine. Any time that happened in the past, it was colder in both places the following winter." (source)
Were you able to follow that story? We had a very tasty sirloin at Bugaboo Creek of talking moose fame. John had sweet potato fries and I had what I thought were going to be Ree's Crash potatoes, but, noooo, they were "smash" potatoes (just mashed) instead. The tastiest part of the meal was the baby back ribs. The best part was reminiscing about our first meal together at a steak house not so long ago.
We did shop at Borders and The Christmas Tree Shop and the day ended, as all good days do, with an ice cream cone at Giffords. You'll have to take my word for it as I forgot to get a picture.
Now after all this talk of rain, I want to show you the most amazing moon shot taken just two nights ago on the one good day of summer so far...
I still need to work on the composition, but isn't that a beautiful round moon?
Happy Thursday...hope it's sunny wherever you are!
Congrats on one year! I joined your blogworld very shortly after your marriage.
ReplyDeleteI hope you always play footsies!
Sorry for your dreary weather. Ours hasn't been too bad, of late. We did get gobs of rain earlier in the season.
I'll try to send the sun up your way!
Blessings!
Becky
Congratulations on your anniversary! I discovered your blog shortly before you were married- time goes quickly!
ReplyDeleteWe just celebrated our 30th. It was a Monday- hubby golfed in his league but only asking for my OK- which I of course said OK too as I was teaching VBS that night! We decided that we celebrate our anniversary EVERY day!
Rain sure can dampen the mood! I wish we had a few of your drops- I returned from PA to find dead flowers in my containers.
Hoping you will see the sun soon!
Sue
Happy Anniversary! It can be discouraging when plans change, but don't you love the uneventful things that fall into place? It sounds like a lovely evening out, and such a beautiful moon to cap it off! =)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend,
Jennifer @ Fiddle Dee Dee
It's drizzly rain here but we need some rain. I'm glad you did something fun and hopefully you can get in the camper and go later. Love the photo of the moon! WOW! That is awesome! You two look cute together!
ReplyDeleteHAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! I am new to following your blog but do enjoy reading it very much...I certainly can sympathize with the rainy day blues, I can barely bring myself to go check my gardens anymore. The plants are in distress from too much rain and not enough sun...come to think of it that pretty much describes how I've been feeling lately. Thanks for cheering me up with your wonderful blog!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your one year anniversary! How wonderful is that ♥ Congratulations on the newest member of your family too. I love that picture of the moon. I saw that moon here and tried to get a picture to post but for some reason it didn't work out. It was sooo beautiful.
ReplyDeleteFirst off...congrats on your first anniversary. It's a milestone to be celebrated...whatever the weather!
ReplyDeleteAbout the rain...we over here would be happy to share in your rain...just for a bit! Our forecast rain for yesterday amounted to 1.6mm...and that is not even one-eighth of an inch. It has been strangely dry on the west coast for the past two months...and it is rather nice (except for the thirsty crops).
We had planned to mark 07/08/09 10:11pm...another milestone..but let that moment slip by without taking note.
Nice moon shot!
I would have invited you to return to the place where the wedding bliss began but we are almost as wet as you are! Oh my poor tomato plants. A day together is a blessing, no matter what the occasion. Happy Anniversary Vee, to you and John. I hope you will enjoy footsies until you are ancient. ~Kathy
ReplyDeleteP.S. Your moon shots improve every time!
Vee,
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary, and Happy new grand baby. Happy rain. What else can we do? Yesterday it rained so hard that I had a waterfall cascading down my garden steps. No kidding, I showed photos of it.
I love the photo of you and your hubby with your boots on, do you remember when we called these chugga boots? My beau had a pair way before it was fashionable to wear them.
I love the Maine mall. I pass it on the way to Kennebunkport, I take the long scenic route.
Stay dry, wait do I see the sun?
Karen
We have been having some wonderful sunny days in the low 80's with low humidity.
ReplyDeleteI will bring some of our weather to Maine next week. :-)
Well Hon, we both know that -- though I missed THE date, I still was the First to Wish You Two, a Happy Anniversary. Way too early but... -grin-
ReplyDeleteGlad you got somewhere, on the date, even if in the rain.
That MOON SHOT is amazing!!!!!!! Don't know what you mean about needing composition work or some 'high-falutin' words like that. ,-) To me, it's beeeeeeeutiful. So there.
This is the weirdest of summers, in the NE. Spring came and gave way to 40 days and 40 nights of rain. Even when it doesn't rain allllll day/night, it rains sometime in the 24.
Like you said, the flowers are giving up. -le sigh- I wake with sun coming through the tree tops. By the time I get downstairs, it's over-taken by clouds. -moan-
Plus, it's more like early Sept. than like July. WTF????<--Don't panic!!!! We 'Twilight' fans now say "What The FORKS." Seeee? No nastiness involved. Seeeeee? "What The Forks"
Forks WA is the setting for the 'Twilight' saga, of course. Oh, you didn't know that? Well, now you do. :-)))))))
Gentle hugs,
'Aunt Amelia'
Dearest Vee and Big Bad John...congratulations on your spectacular union! You two were made for each other and I am so glad that the finding occurred at long last...a toast to the "newlyweds"! To John and Vee
ReplyDeletelong may you dance
in each others arms
till the music fades
to a soft humming but still
dance on...dance on!
hugs
Sandi
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY VEE & JOHN!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and many, many more years of love and happiness!
I can't believe it is one year already! Time does have a way of passing more quickly when life is good..and your life together has been wonderful to read about and see in photos.
Your day may have been cold and rainy but you made the most of it and had fun. I love "Books a Million"! There aren't any here but we found one while on vacation in Virginia one year and my hubby had to drag me out of the store before I filled my shopping cart ( and house) with their million books..lol
Congrats to John for great-grand #2!
Your Moon shot is wonderful. My grandson was born the day of the fullest closest Moon we've had in centuries...in December. I'll never forget how big and bright it was! A legend for him to grow up with.
Keep the celebration going!
Hugs, Pat
The moon shot is fabulous! Sorry about the weather. My sister is in Alaska right now and we have friends there that posted about the 80 degrees they are enjoying yesterday and today :0) Who would have thought...
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary to you!
Ohhhhhhhhhh look! I signed in to read blogs, from my 'Alice's Aunt' blog addy! -grin- Instead of from my 'Aunt Amelia's Attic' blog.
ReplyDeleteWell, now you can see how cute I am, over there, as 'Alice's Aunt.' -giggles-
Guess I'm just 'AA' everywhere, these days.
'AA'

Footies on a rainy day sound very romantic to me....

Happy Anniversary Vee & John!
ReplyDeleteI can hardly believe it's been a year since you toyed with all of us :). I'm sorry you've had so much rain but footsie sounds wonderful under the circumstances :).
Have a wonderful day!
Hugs,
Kathi :)
It is sunny here, but we had a miserable rainy spring! It's also hot and humid!
ReplyDeleteGlad your spirits were lifted by your outing. Congrats on your one year anniversary and the blessings of new children added to your family!
Can I send you some 100+ degree temps and scorching sunshine? I will trade you 7 days of rain for 7 days of sunshine. We are crispy here and cookin our eggs on the hoods of our cars. The earthworms and slugs don't dare come up out of the dirt for fear of shriveling up in a nano-second. My little chihuahua thinks dry crispy worms on the sidewalk are a summer treat! Maybe I should package and sell 'em???
ReplyDeleteSorry about your dreary anniversary day. Wow, has it been a whole year already??? Well, happy anniversary to you two lovebirds anyway. All cozied up on the couch playing footsies sounds pretty good to me on a chilly, rainy day! Why don't we swap towns for awhile...
Vee,
ReplyDeleteA very happy Anniversary wish to you and John! I am glad you celebrated in spite of the weather. It looks like you had fun.
I can in no way blame a cool wind on the Canadians because we have not seen one in months!!! How about we trade places for a week or so? I will gladly send you some of my heat and humidity if you will trade me some rain and cool breezes.
Have a sweet afternoon!
Happy Anniversary Vee! I glad you didn't let the rain ruin your day. What a beautiful shot of the moon!
ReplyDeleteCongrats for your one year anniversary. . .I was excited last night at 07/08/09 10:12 pm. . I celebrated once in a lifetime at the end instead of the beginning.
ReplyDeleteYou are blessed to have someone to share you do nothing days together with. . .that's all that counts.
I did note that you had a moose in your post too. . how fun.
Happy Anniversary, Vee!
ReplyDeleteLooks like your trip was wet but wonderful. Your post about the rain, coupled with the pictures, made me want to grab a blanket and snuggle up...even though the sun is shining brighly here. LOL
And yes, that "moon shot" is spectacular!!!
Happy anniversary, Vee! Wishing you wonderful, delightful, and blessed years ahead. May God's abundant blessings be yours!

PS: All I can think of is the song --- Rain, rain, go away!
Wow, it is hard to believe it has been a year since your surprise (to me) announcement. Congratulations! We are never to old for true love. :)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter lives in New England and is calling this the spring (and now summer) that wasn't.
We have had lots of rain here, too.
Congrats on the anniversary. It was lovely seeing all the pictures of the rain. I know you are thinking I must be nuts but you see I live in San Antonio TX and we have been in an extreme drought for the last year. Our temps the last 2 days have been 104 with no relief in site. So far this July I think we have had 2 days that we did not hit 100 or better. Enjoy the rain and please send some our way. Happy Anniversary and many more
ReplyDeleteNancy
Happy Anniversary John and Vee...wow...has it been a whole year already? Time flies.
ReplyDeleteI miss Christmas Tree shops..there aren't any out west.
HUGS,
Robin
Congratulations on your anniversary and the new great-grand child.
ReplyDeleteHappy Happy!!!We just had our 35th. Hope you have a great weekend...m.
ReplyDeleteHi Vee,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you and John on this one year anniversary, I have been reading your blog for almost a year now and let me say, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. You have such a great way of putting words together so that I feel as though I have been there or am there with you. What a talent.
I so enjoyed this day with you and John. Also, as I read about yours and John's adventures I see true love in action, You are so inspiring. Now enough about this mush,
Love the moon shot, and I so much enjoy shopping at Christmas shops this time of year.
Congratulations too on the new great grand baby!
And while you are at it send some of that rain and cooler temps, our way, please!
Blessings,
Sue
Happy First Anniversary to you two. Good thing you can play footsies rain or shine. But, that is a bit of a bummer that your trip was a washout. We will gladly take some of your rain down here if you can figure out how to send it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting fact about the time and date.
Congratulations on the new addition.
I am very impressed with your gorgeous photo of the moon. I have only taken one picture of the moon and it was hard to tell what it even was. There must be a trick that I don't know about.
Hope you dry out soon.
Happy Anniversary you two! That year went by fast.
ReplyDeleteI love your blogs!!
Peggy
Oh Vee - congrats and I wish you many happy more!
ReplyDeleteWe seem to be in the same funk - rain, rain , rain. But today it's sunny and they are calling for great weather this weekend.
Thanks for stopping by today. I did see that you made a Christmas dinner. I'll bet it was great. My family has been asking for roast turkey and all the trimmings - but that'll have to wait until the weather turns cooler.
Enjoy your weekend!
Leann
Happy Anniversary dear Vee & John!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you both! I delight in your stories and the sweet kind attitudes toward life you share with us. Thank you for the refreshing wonderful posts you give us Vee. You make our grumbles and moans and sighs seem normal as we "mature"! You are the BEST in my book!!
May you be blessed with MANY sweet years together!!
Hugs, Sherry
I'm heading up to New England on Sunday...Cape Cod. I've been told I have to check out the Christmas shops. I'm hoping for good weather! I've heard Maine is wonderful and maybe I'll get there one day? Hope your A was happy. I'll have to catch up!
