Are You Stressed?

Thank you for the great discussion yesterday! It was so much fun that I think it'll be an every Wednesday thing for the next few weeks of Downton Abbey. Next time, we'll only have Episode 5 of Season 4 to discuss so it won't be quite so involved. I promise that a notice will come first for those who are behind or don't wish to run into a discussion on a blog.

~~~
John and I had a little discussion yesterday morning that went like this:
Me: Honey, are you stressed?
John: Why do you ask?
Me: I think I have proof.
John: Like what?
~stress relievers~
Whenever the table looks like this after John's been to the store, I can pretty much bet that he's having some stress. He was. The car. It needed repairing. We didn't have an extra grand to spare. He's been working on it. It's cold.  He is pretty certain that it's fixed. Ohhh...perhaps these aren't stress relievers after all; perhaps they're for celebration!
~~~

Later in the afternoon, John took out his stress in an arm-wrestling match. (No eight-year-olds were hurt in the telling of this story.)

 ~grim determination in the face of great odds~

 ~look at this mismatch~

~an amazing finish~

I'm going to start calling them the Blurry Boys. They sure can move! We come home from the bus stop, have a snack, do homework, read, play basketball, and end with some time on the iPad. An hour and a half of rollicking good fun! (Unless it's all day of rollicking fun as it was on Martin Luther King Day.)

Both have recently celebrated their birthdays so now they are behaving like little gentlemen. True. I'm getting a lot of mileage out of those new ages. They are my favorite boys in all the world.

What do you do when stressed?

  1. O, yes, Vee....I, too, have some favorite boys in all the world. :)
    I don't get stressed too often but when I do, I sleep.

  2. I take a walk, if the weather is nice, otherwise when I am stressed, I eat comfort food. But I also eat comfort food when I am happy and when it is cold...lol

  3. I used to go for a walk, but just now, I read a book, preferably D.E. Stevenson, if I'm stressed......
    Love those blurry boys. I've got a few blurry kids in my own family! And I'm hoping your car is just fine now.

  4. I know just what you're saying about favorite boys. I told our (one and only) grandson that he was my favorite grandson. Then I realized that his other grandma has several grandsons so I shouldn't have said that. It's been quite a few years since I made that verbal mistake (but he is!).

    I'm with John! I usually eat a very healthy diet, but yesterday I wanted to eat anything and everything. It's a good thing that I didn't have all those wonderful snacks in the house. Was there a full moon?

  5. Those boys sure are adorable! Enjoy these years and keep making the memories! I hope that John got the car fixed. All those treats look like celebration indulgences.

  6. What a sweet blessing those boys are and yes, I turn to sweets when stressed.

  7. Going for a walk is a sure stress-buster for me, but getting out there and doing it sometimes takes more effort than I'm willing to put out. Reading a good book or cooking something helps, too. Or giggling with little girls.
    Rollicking laughter is the best medicine. Such winsome smiles your grandsons have.

  8. What cute fellows! I confess, I eat sweets, too. When I felt better, working in the garden was a great stress reliever.

  9. Car trouble/cash flow/cold is enough to cause some stress! My approach to stress is similar to John's...I eat. Chocolate is good.

    Handsome boys, they are! And now they're gentlemen...perfect. You are making such wonderful memories for them.

  10. Hi Vee,

    I don't get stressed nearly as much as I used to; but work is very stressful for my hubby, and he usually does what John did (chocolate!) Reading, walking, and a good dose of laughter often helps me cope with stress.

    Your boys are so handsome; they have great smiles and they look like very good-natured young men! :) Have a great day, Vee!!

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor

  11. It is so nice to see your happy family...so handsome indeed!
    When I get stressed I get busy catching up on the things that are usually the reason for the stress..helps every time. xo

  12. That's a lot for John to be stressed about especially in your weather. Looks like the blurry boys were a source of de stressing as well. I tend to start cleaning--get busy doing something maybe to take my focus off the crisis.

  13. Cute guys and I like the blurry guys nickname.

  14. Stress - Stress??? What is that??? LOL. Chocolate is the only thing to help my stress. And a good book by Miss Read or Laura Ingalls Wilder.

  15. Blurry Boys! Love that, and oh, so true! I'm happy you get time with them everyday. What a treat for them and you to have this time with you and John.

    Now stress. I don't get too stressed out but when I do, I want chocolate too!

    Now back to my day here….gotta finish up. We are going sledding this afternoon at our friends' home. Well, the kids are…it's cold outside!

  16. OK, first as to the previous discussion: I saw the first post and read it but then decided that I needed to stay away. My daughter loves that series (D.A.) in the biggest way and wants me to watch it. As yet, I have not taken the plunge, mainly because I'm a purist who would want to marathon it from the beginning.

    So until I do... I will not peek.

    On the topic of stress? Well, for my entire adult life, it was generally to eat. In recent months I have been able to get a handle on that. Now, I piddle. It helps a little. Praying and trying my best not to worry is the only thing that works. (Aside from tossing the stress into my husband's ear, which isn't very nice.)

    Your blurry boys are handsome boys once the blurry gets straight!

  17. There's nothing like boys to give a house some good energy and lots of fun. And then there are boy hugs...gotta love those. When I'm stressed....that's a good question. I wish I knew what to do. I guess I get really still and quiet but I don't get hungry. Can't wait to take part in the Downton fun. Enjoy your afternoon my friend! Hugs!

  18. I haven't watched this series yet, am I the only one on earth who hasn't?? Maybe when they start it all over again I'll get in on the ground floor.

    Your boys are darling, there is nothing like grandkids to make us laugh and lighten stress! That and the pile of sweets your hubby selected. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. When I'm stressed I want to eat chocolate. When I'm happy I want to eat chocolate. :) The boys sure are cutie patooties.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Such handsome young men, Vee. How nice that they have a place to come home to from the bus stop!
    When I'm stressed I generally want something like a burrito or other comfort food, or maybe a pastry....oye!

    ReplyDelete
  21. When I am stressed I cook and bake and eat and cook and bake and eat!

    Your grandsons are very cute. You are a very lucky grandmother!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Stress - housework! The duster can take a mean beating when I'm giving it a good workout. :-) Your grandsons are at a fun age and yes, can be very active. I like the age of our our twin granddaughters who will be 18 this year and like shopping, eating out, shopping...just like grandma.
    I'm glad John could fix the car, Glenn does most of our car and home repairs to save money too.

  23. I tend to lose a lot of sleep when I am stressed- the worst possible thing I can do to my body!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am hoping John's chocolate turned into celebration food and that the car is indeed fixed.
    I'll bet the eight year old had fun helping to lower the stress level.
    How nice that the boys have a happy place to come after school. I think their smiling faces are a good indication of the good times to be had at your haven.
    I am guilty of heading for the chocolate when stress hits. I also find a walk or time in the garden to be helpful.

  25. Unfortunately, I eat. Unless it is something so horrible, then I just get sharp pains! It is so cold and miserable here, no warm up in sight.

    ReplyDelete
  26. When I am stressed I come by here and visit with you, leave all warm and fuzzy! I truly enjoy your post! And when I can't get by, I go to the junk cabinet and indulge! The boys are really growing Vee, and what handsome young lads they are. Enjoy every moment you can because they will be fleeting moments for sure.I know, one thing for sure when they finally leave they will return for visits just as our grandson Will did the past week, he drove 4 hrs. to spent three with us and then drove back home because he had guard duty! As I always say these memories will carry all through the good times as well as the not so good times!
    warm hugs,
    Sue

  27. We share the same stress relievers. :) My Blurry Boys have fur. Yours are cuter but I'll bet they cost more. *lol* ~:)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh I bake...then I eat what I bake...and then I feel guilty since I'm supposed to be limiting my sugar and grains...or I take a hot bath. Which is a much better stress reliever as long as I can stay in as long as I want :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Take a walk and pray. : )
    The boys are getting big and look like a lot of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I hope all things stressful are soon gone. John's loot looks like something I could really dig my teeth into, and those handsome boys would put a smile on anyone's face.

    Whenever I'm feeling stressed, I tend to find strength in stillness and solitude ... with plenty to eat close by.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love the blurry boys photos. OH.. I do wish John could have popped over here with the car to work in the heated shop. =(
    Well... when I am super stressed... I don't want to eat and when I am a little stressed I like to have comfort food. I find it really helpful to chat about it. It is hard to start talking about it but once I've got it all out in the open, I feel better.

  32. Yes, I am stressed just a tiny bit..
    Laundry..
    Dishes..
    Baby feeding..
    Laundry ..
    Dishes...
    Baby pamper changing...
    and it goes on and on..
    And NO SLEEP.
    I have to stop and Thank God that without all this I would feel empty..
    so,
    BRING ON THE STRESS!! lol

  33. What beautiful boys, Vee. They are just darling. I have a couple of those blurry boys here, too-they never quit moving. You hubby sounds like he relieves stress like I do-which ultimately causes MORE stress at the scale- xo Diana

    ReplyDelete
  34. Blurry Boys! I bet they run around so much they are always that way, with or without your camera!!

    When I get stressed I have to distract myself. Read, get out of the house, blog, cook. I only turn to food when I'm bored, so again, i distract myself. Keeping the good stuff out of the house or out of sight helps! :)

    XO,
    Jane

  35. Your blurry boys are darling Vee! Yes the weather is enough to stress anyone these days and then there are the car repairs - ugh! Chocolate should help??

    ReplyDelete
  36. Cute blurry boys! When stressed, I used to twirl my hair in my fingers. Now I am trying to teach myself to crochet and make something actually useful from my stressed out episodes! Oh, and there is always shortbread cookies and chocolates!

  37. When stressed? I turn to chocolate, and sugar. It's a habit I'm trying to break, but so far they're my drug of choice in a stressful situation. It sounds like you days are full with little grandsons :>) I hoped I have some sweet grands some day!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I eat chocolate and anything salty when I'm stressed. The 'little gentlemen' are very entertaining aren't they. Keeps you and John 'young'.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I tend to hibernate when stressed. The picture of johns sweets was hilarious. Love the pictures of your grands. What a blessing to live close to them. I love living close to mine, makes the hard days joyful.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You always know how to make me laugh! Even though I am somewhat stressed...about stuff I can not change. I find that 'spending time with friends' is a good antidote for stress. Talking about issues helps...and just forgetting about them for awhile is also a good thing. Oh...and laughing!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love seeing the Grands growing up.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would eat everything on that table -I'm definitely a stress eater.

    Love that you are having daily fun with your grands. my parents spent a lot of time with our guys and they remember all of it.
