Let's Pretend

Former Photo Source

Ahhhh...that's lovely. A little pretending in January can be a blessing. Jill's not been pretending. She's been "away." You can see all of her pretty vacation photos *here.*

Do you travel in winter months? John and I have discussed the possibility of being snowbirds one day and spending January through April in Florida or Arizona. It's fun to pretend.

When the cold of January has seeped deep into my bones and I just can't seem to settle, those daydreams are nearly all the warmth there is.

To be honest, neither of us would enjoy skedaddling for that long.  Guess that we'll just stay where we are becoming more and more frozen to the ground.

How are you feeling about winter this year?

  1. Florida has hurricanes and alligators. Come to Arizona. :)

    (Just kidding Florida people.)

  2. Winter is my least favorite month and of course, it is nothing as severe as what you have. Don't think we could handle more than one place to keep up. It is 9 here this a.m. which is really cold for us!
Hope you both have a nice day.

  3. It is colder here in WV than it has been for years. Right now I would love to be somewhere that is warmer and the sun is shining.

  4. I actually love winter in Texas, Vee. It's the scorching summers here that I dread, and that seem to drag on forever. I guess we all have our cross to bear! xo

  5. We like to go to Florida whenever possible but only for a month, as that's long enough away from home and family for me. It's not always overly warm in February when we go but at least we're away from the cold and snow.
Dream on for now, but try a couple of weeks one year to see if you'd like the break too.

  6. I think that it is fun to travel but I wouldn't want to be gone for too long. Home is here.

  7. Well..this is our first winter here in the great north..lived in Alabama for 20 years..I agree..home is here. No matter how cold, dark, snowy, sub zero it gets. Because if we were to travel or live part time where ever, we would be complaining how hot it is, lol. My parents are in Fl and all they do is complain (they don't want to change or their afraid to try something diff.). Blessings

  8. I've thought about a nomadic life after the dh retires, but I'm not sure I could leave for that long. Right now though- I would rather be somewhere that has a temperature quite above the 17 degrees we have here. Especially since I have to get out in it today!

  9. Looks wonderful . I have my good days and my bad days about winter . The good days are when the sun is shining and the winds are calm temps aren't to bad I have been out with our Miggs for walks more this winter then past winters even though this winter has been one of the coldest in years . I find the more I get out there all bundled up the more I get used to it ! But unlike today there is a windchill warning and snow blowing all over so today is and indoor day , oh well Spring will be here soon lol ! Thanks for sharing . Have a good weekend !

  10. We had never gone to a warmer climate during the winter season until this past December, when we went to Charleston. I have to admit that it was pretty nice to have breakfast on a grand southern porch at the B&B while dressed in a short-sleeve shirt. (It was 78 degrees.) I would never live full-time in a hot climate, but I can see why there are a lot of snowbirds! We'll stay put in TN by choice. We enjoy 4 distinct seasons, yet we don't experience the brutality of most weather extremes.

  11. ahhh....dreams are what keep us going, I think. Pretending, daydreaming....whatever it's called, can produce a wonderful feeling that can get us thru cold days. OR, we can embrace the cold winter....snow, ice...sharp, bone-chilling winds, by staying inside as much as we can, light the fireplace or candles, bake up something good that makes our house smell sooo good...finish up or start a new craft....(I am about to make another quilt, I think). We haven't had the moisture a lot of you have....dry as a bone here. THAT makes a huge difference, I know.
    Stay warm...

  12. I am colder than normal and I was just saying this morning, that next January we need to find some place warm for the month!

  13. I love the quite winter days, but then I work from home.

  14. I've been reading Jill's posts from PV. I'd love to be sitting on a beach somewhere, under sunny skies, sipping a drink with an umbrella perched on the edge of the glass.......but that's not likely to happen. Gorgeous image you've teased us with!

  15. Oh Vee - we don't do this every winter but are on a wee getaway right now in Mexico. Its been so wonderful to have just a few weeks away from the bitter cold and stormy Ontario!!! I say - you and John should do it. Our philosophy is that we must do some travelling while we can still walk and enjoy our travels. Mexico is inexpensive and warm :).

  16. Very cold here today, we are not used to continual cold weather, our furnace has not cut off in 4 days, the sun is shining and that is a good thing. Leaving for a warmer climate is not an option when you have animals to feed and keep warm, our ewes are still lambing. Vacationing in a warmer climate today would be so nice, maybe these old bones would get warm!~smile~
    Enjoy your day,

  17. I'm feeling like being the winner of the HGTV dream house in Lake Taho, where you could come and go, enjoy both winter and summer whenever the mood hits. Is it wrong to pray about that??? :)

  18. Well if your looking for almost perfect weather it is hard to beat So. California. There are truly soo many gorgeous places. Of course then you would have to battle the crowds that are already here for that reason too, learn to drive the life threatening scary freeways, and lines EVERYWHERE you go. But! you could visit me, lol! Actually while the weather is soo nice right now, the lack of rain and moisture is going to be a BIG problem this summer. It's always something. Keep warm, and enjoy your week-end!

  19. It is COLD. When the temps reach 100 and above this year, I'm going to try to not complain!

  20. Absolutely lovely photos. Neighbors (at the other end of our townhouses) retired, sold their home, downsized to a townhouse (Jim calls it an expensive storage unit) and they are spending retirement years as many of us would wish to do. From the weekend after Christmas to the first of May they spend 6 weeks at a resort in Mexico and then stay until May at a resort in AZ. When they return, they stay in the townhouse long enough to get their lake home ready for the summer. About Oct 1st they return to the townhouse to stay until that weekend after Christmas. What a fantastic retirement life! If you didn't know that they are in their 70's, you would think they were in their 40's. Fun-loving and happy people ~ a joy to be around. The pictures helped me see what their time in Mexico must be like. That lifestyle won't happen to me. We will forever have pets and they couldn't do all of that traveling with us. I'm just hoping that we will be well enough to have our dream of retirement years (at least several of them) traveling with our little home right behind us.

  21. I try to think of all the bad bugs that may not be in my garden with all the lovely flowers this spring.
Cold and snow are not to bad but the hard blowing wind is to much.

  22. I am the most unadventurous person I know...so I'll be content to stay close to home and endure the winter. (I'd have not been some of the places I've been if it were not for my son moving all over the country!) Really, I am content. :)

How am I feeling about winter this year? Sigh... We have had more severely cold weather than any winter in recent memory. And, as I love to quote my friend's sister, "The older I get, the more narrow my window of acceptable temperatures." That would be it. I really hate the heat and humidity, but this deep Arctic chill is rocking my boat. Is it too much to want "perfect"? ;)

  23. I honestly don't mind the Winter - it's not my favourite season but I don't mind it. I like the quiet and the cosiness of being inside. We're both homebodies and love living where we can enjoy all four seasons.

  24. Oh, I 'mind travel' all the time in the winter, but I wouldn't trade this time of curling up and hunkering down for all the tea in China, all the wine in Provence, all the pasta in Portofino, all the beef in Brazil, or all the venison in Vermont! Getting my (snow) drift here? I love all four seasons and to me there's no place like New England ... although it COULD be just a tad warmer! Stay toasty, lovely Vee!

  25. In a word: COLD. That's how I'm feeling. We're just not equipped for this. We tend to run out even in the winter months with a jacket, no gloves... not hat. It's not usually necessary. I feel like an Eskimo in a windbreaker out there.

My aunt and uncle were snowbirds. They lived part of the year in the Berkshires and part in Florida. We used to see them en route after we moved. I always thought it sounded like fun, but I'm like you and think I wouldn't want to be away from home that long.

    Stay warm!!

  26. Baby it's cold outside!...which is why I tend to hibernate inside and just wait for my favorite season, SPRING! As much as I hate the cold I can't imagine leaving home for several months.

  27. Our winter is so mild compared to yours but I'm still feeling a bit stuck. I am not a candidate for 2-3 month vacations. 2 weeks away is about as much as I can handle.

  28. I am hating winter this year. It is being so mean to everyone!

  29. As BG has been saying lately, the older I get, the colder the winters. He is taking a blood thinner, so that is probably part of the reason he is feeling the cold more because I know he is used to working out in the elements. I am a stay-at-home gal, so being in doesn't bother me overmuch. It's just that I worry about my family traveling to and fro for work when the roads are bad. We haven't had as much snow as last winter, for which I'm grateful, but I do realize we still have plenty of winter left, so ask again later! :) I do think I'd love to spend a few weeks somewhere warm, but a few months? I don't know about that.

  30. Travel is fun but the older I get the more I want to just be home. And our winters are never too cold or snowy so nothing to get away from there. I can see how you would have enough where you live! I am enjoying another arctic episode. Love the cold weather in small spurts.

  31. I'm loving this winter up here in the snow. : )

  32. This winter has seemed particularly hard. After suffering from a fx ankle last year, I have to be so careful walking, and there is ice everywhere. Despite the hard winter, I don't have an interest to travel, however that picture of the pool you posted sure looks inviting.

  33. January doldrums seem to hit even here where the winter has been particularly mild. Jill's posts are filled with such lovely images and descriptions that make me happy to rejoice with those who rejoice but I also struggle with one of the commandments (the coveting one).
We ARE going away on a winter vacation, though. Next week. To Alberta. Not skiing. Not so much fun after all.

  34. Vee, I am experiencing a bit of cabin fever. Too cold for me! I am longing for spring. :-)

& you are cordially invited to my giveaway! Blessings, Gina

  35. Hey it was 60 out on our deck today. We are hoping all our plants don't start budding out early.
I would still rather be in Mexico, preferably having lunch on the garden balcony again.
One week in Mexico was not enough. The longest vacation I have ever taken in my whole life was three weeks back in 1973. A two week vacation has only happened maybe twice in my adult life. We usually take long weekends getaway for conserving $ and time.

  36. Vee- I feel captive to the cold. I am so sick of the cold and snow and frigid weather this year. It is worse than most years here. We used to go South for a few weeks in the winter but hubby's work does not allow that to happen anymore. It is really sad because I do much better in warm temps. But- I guess we are where we are for a reason....just trying to figure out what that reason is!;>) xo Diana

  37. I customarily enjoy winter. However, this year I can't go outside and do yardwork because of the weather. Here in SE Georgia this is the time of year to clean up outside: rake, burn leaves, prune, etc. You know, get ready for Spring. Plus we enjoy motorcycling. Summers are brutal here. But this year it's just too bloody cold for these old bones. So, yeah, I'm ready for a warmer clime. That picture looks heavenly right now. I'm gonna start playing the lotto. *sigh* If I win, wanna come with? *lol* ~:)

  38. I'm coming here from Jill's blog...and thought for a moment that maybe you had joined her in 'paradise'! I'm actually quite OK with being home this January...since we have had no winter weather to speak of. It has been warm, sunny and beautiful for over a week now. But I am sympathizing with you...over there in the deep freeze.

  40. I get very restless this time of year. I get bored easily.

  42. Yes lets pretend....I could spend some time in that gorgeous photo setting. Wishing you a wonderful weekend Vee.
