Hola Hodge Podge

1. Can you tell I'm embracing a Cinco de Mayo theme here this week?

Yes, I see that! 💃🏼

Do you like Mexican food?

Yes

 What's your favorite dish?

Impossible to determine, but I really like tacos and enchiladas.

How about on the side-black beans, pinto beans, refried beans, rice?

Not so much...a little

 What about heat-mild, medium, hot?

mild

Will you celebrate with Mexican food and drink on May 5th aka Cinco de Mayo?

Not likely

2. Ever been to Mexico?

No, not even when I was with my husband stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona for nearly three years. The government really frowned upon visiting then because, even though it was 40 years ago, drugs, murder, and crime were rampant. It's been a big problem for a long time.

For work or holiday? Love it or no?

My husband did visit for business years later and saw the seamier side of things so he did not love it. I think one must visit the resorts to see the delights.

If you haven't been, is this a place you'd like to visit?

no

Can you speak Spanish?

No, though I enjoy hearing it spoken. In my corner, French is the second language. I took French for three years and understand it slightly better than I can speak it. I am taking German classes now with Duolingo...kind of fun! (I also took German for two years in college. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?)

3. What's one thing you may accomplish this month?

Planting my summer planters and getting a few things to Goodwill. I'd also like to go on a day trip or two or three.

4. If you were mayor of your village, city, or town, what's one thing you'd like to see changed, done away with, revamped, or accomplished?

Only one? There are soooooo many. Why don't I just make a bullet list and thank you for this opportunity to vent.

I would require that people clean up their properties so that property values would be maintained across neighborhoods. One can be poor and also tidy. Shabby is okay, but filth is unacceptable for the public good.

I would stop recycling in our transfer station because we already know that nothing is being sold for recycling—until it is, this activity is a waste of our time and tax dollars (extra man power to handle it all).

I would put the day removed from the times we are allowed to use the transfer station back! Good grief...they keep taking things away and it is so frustrating.

I would re-design the traffic flow in the town square before someone gets killed and add a traffic light with green arrows for left turns.

I would replace a police officer, maybe two, even three.

I would pave a few streets and fill in lots of potholes.

I would have a Community Clean Up Day with lots of fun events and prizes.

I would re-paint the town bridge. It's an eyesore and the main feature of our town. It is a disgrace for it to be in this condition.

Is serving in public office something you've ever seriously considered?

Yes, but I am prone to righteous indignation (she said euphemistically) so that prevents me from taking on certain tasks.

5. What's something that may be popular, but that you just don't get?

Tattoos, which have been around forever, yet I just don't get them.

Even my darling had a tattoo. Thank goodness, it was high on his arm. It said, "Big John." He once had a doctor ask him if that was a tall outhouse. Witty, cheeky doctor! 😉

6. Can't let this week slip by without mentioning Thursday May 4th is Star Wars Day. As in 'May the 4th be with you' ahem. Are you a fan of the Star Wars series?

not especially, more of a Star Trek fan than a Star Wars one and not much of a fan of either
Exactly how much of a fan are you? On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being 'I've seen every film, own the action figures, might have dressed as Darth Vader for Halloween one year', and 1 being, 'what's a Vader?' -where do you land?

7. Scroll back through your blog posts and in three sentences or less tell us the general theme of your fourth blog post. Does it still ring true today? Is it a topic you re-visit on your blog from time to time?

It was a music recommendation. I have not heard the performer's work in a long, long time. I still make music recommendations and, in fact, did on the post prior to this one.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Oh let's consider all that venting on #4 my random thought of the week. 😇

Thanks for reading, now join Joyce and her friends at From This Side of the Pond. Thank you, Joyce, for all the interesting questions!

  1. I'm just not into Cinco d Mayo---why celebrate another countrys' independence? Just saying...so I didn't participate this week.I have been to Mexico and I was not impressed...just saying. I did though, enjoy your answers, smiles.

Aren't I just full of it today? lololol---have a great day Vee, rain, rain, rain here, I did mention rain, right? lololol

    1. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day - it's a day that commemorates an unlikely battle win of the Mexicans over the French at Puebla. Mexican independence is celebrated in September.
We don't "celebrate" it in Canada, but we do enjoy Mexican food!

    2. Even less of a reason to celebrate... I'd probably celebrate if I were Mexican, but see no reason for celebrating as an American.

  2. Fun answers to the questions! Enjoyed reading your post. Your suggestions for your town are excellent ones. Sounds like there's a lot of work to be done. Are you able to share your ideas with your mayor? Our mayor has "office hours" once a month where she welcomes people to come to the community center, have a cup of coffee with her, and talk about issues of concern. It's a good way to get citizens involved and hear what they want.

  3. Great answers, Vee! I especially enjoyed reading what you would do if you were mayor. Loved #1 on your bullet list. And #2 -- that is too bad. Our transfer station guy does a lot with selling what is recycled and making money for the town. Since that occurs, I don't begrudge separating out plastics, metal, etc.

Enjoy your day! Looks like a bit of sun out there today.

    1. Well that would be a good idea. Our guys take their picks of things brought in. One of the perks of the job I guess.

  4. I'm not a fan of going to Mexico, either. The times I've been, I just didn't feel safe, at all.

  5. Tall john, not exactly a compliment. Clever doctor. :D Wow, I think I'll vote for you. Sounds like you've got a lot of good ideas and are ready to tackle them!

  6. I'd vote for you Vee! I like your ideas. Mexico has never been on my want to visit list. That whole don't drink the water thing...
Mexican food is our go to both at home and when we eat out. Hope you can get to those planters soon. It's raining here right now. :)

  7. Cinco de Mayo is my Dad's birthday! Perhaps we need some good Mexican food to celebrate, but it is hard to find here in the Mid-Atlantic.

I understand your issues on #4. Seems like no one has common sense anymore and can't work through solutions.

My son and daughter in law have a lot of tattoos and while I love them, I don't love the tattoos. My Dad has two - one on each arm. He got them young while in the Navy.

  8. Fun answers, Vee! Vee for Mayor - you have so many concrete ideas! We drove into Mexico once, a couple of years ago, to visit friends and didn't feel threatened at all. This was on the Baja Peninsula, which is a little bit safer. We have friends who are missionaries in another part of the country and the drug violence is appalling.

  9. Enjoyed your hodgepodge! And I guess I finally found an area where we are not the same, lol. And it embarasses me. Your suggestions for your city are wonderful and I honestly wonder how it is I can live in such a bubble that I don't notice. YOU lady would have made a wonderful Mayor! And it's not too late! Oh, and I've never "got" tattoos either, lol.

  10. Love your answers, Vee. Now, why didn't I think of tattoos? Both my boys have them. Aaron has several smallish ones representing his love for things with wheels...John Deere, CAT (Caterpillar) etc and Adam's is a huge face of Jesus's suffering face with the crown of thorns that covers his whole bicep... but like you, I just don't get it. All I can do is imagine all of the nursing homes full of old people with shriveled and indistinguishable blotches all over their bodies!

  11. I enjoyed reading your Hodgepodge today. You have some very good ideas for improving your town. Someone needs to take note :)
I don't get the fascination with tatoos either, but didn't think of that.
    Enjoy your week,

  12. I loved Mexican food when in Mexico and the southern states, but it is not the same here.

  13. Love this, Vee. What a fun post. I always love reading your hodgepodge answers because I know I am going to smile at something.
We have been to Mexico several times (resorts all but once) but I have no desire to go back with everything going on there. My bil & sil are missionaries there and two or three times over the years they have been stopped by la policia and threatened with jail time for some (imagined) infraction of traffic laws. They offer them money and they "let it go this time".
Hope you have a great Wednesday-xo Diana

  14. Vee I was quite surprised that your town doesn't make use of the recyclables. Our county uses the items to make money to run the landfill. You should run for mayor and clean things up!
It's really sad when I see young kids with "sleeves" of tattoos on their bodies. What in the world are they going to look like when they get to be my age?
Enjoyable Hodge Podge. Have a great afternoon. ♥

  15. My husband traveled frequently to Mexico City on business and it's still wise to be cautious there. I think if you're staying in one of the touristy resorts and don't venture too far afield you're okay. Common sense is always a good idea, no matter where you roam. Not everybody knows this : )

  16. I always enjoy reading your answers. I'm with you with the tattoos. My son is covered in them!!
You would make a great Mayor and I'd vote for you too. : )

  17. I don't like tattoos either - especially knowing we all age and those sag and that's just not a good look! Enjoyed your answers today! Have a great evening!

  18. Always a pleasure to read your answers, Vee.
I think your town would see great improvements with you at the helm. I'd vote for you.

  19. You should run for office. That's a good long list, shows you do some thinking about things and care!

  20. Oh Vee - I so enjoyed reading your answers and especially your "bullet" list!!! I'd vote for you for sure. We have enjoyed Mexico on several occasions and love Mexican food. I don't get tattoos either - why is this such a fad? We are in the rainy doldrums over here too (although the sun shone a bit today). Record rainfall to come again tomorrow on the 4th! Might have to start another quilt project :).

  21. Mexico was never on my radar to visit until we decided to take a cruise this year to relax. The easiest cruise for us to take from LA was to Western Mexico. I was pleasantly surprised by how pretty it was, and how many Americans and Canadians have retired there, as the cost of living is much less expensive and the weather was so tropical. We were in nice towns, but not resorts.

Your mayor list is a good one. It's sad your town does not do anything with its recycle. A lot is done with it here, and people here are very good with trying to keep things out of the landfill. Potholes are always a snow problem--we get them here too!

    1. They do EVERYTHING with recycle, Pat. The problem is that a market can not be found. Check to see if a market is actually found in your corner. There is a difference between recycling and actually having a purchaser for those recyclables.

  22. I've never wanted to go to Mexico but I sure love the food. Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but I've never liked tattoos. You would make a great mayor, Vee. You might consider passing along your list, it sounds like they need help at the very least.

  23. Don't you just LOVE DuoLingo. Who'd have thought I could do something productive like learning a language while sitting in a waiting room or waiting in line somewhere? Loved your rant -- righteous indignation, indeed. Ha! And I have a much greater love of Mexican food than you do, apparently, but strangely enough have never had a desire to go there.
