Portland Head Light

Since we needed to take my niece to Portland to meet her ride back to Boston, we decided to make a day of it. It ended not with ice cream, but with a trip to the Portland Head Light at sunset per my grandmother's request. She loves the sea...a true daughter of Moncton, NB and Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Here are some of my photos and I hope that I have done better naming them for my dear friend J.

  2. Ah the pictures are beautiful Vee. Somehow it brings me comfort to know you are in driving distance to Boston. . .with our young friend heading that direction.

  3. My Mom loved the sea too.... even at the end when she was so weak we almost had to carry her to the van to drive the short distance to the seaside....where we would nibble crackers and watch the waves; the ships going by and strain our eyes for sight of a great whale. .... .. She would be overcome some days ... tears would well up.... especially on days when the wind was blowing and the waves were wild....happily clapping her hands and cheering them on...

John Masefield's Sea Fever was her favourite poem...

well, there, now I've done it... my throat hurts and the tears are running down my face... think I'll just go have a damn good cry ....

  5. Lovely photos. And it was a lovely surprise to read "Moncton". I spent several weeks in NB on three press trips many years ago. What a lovely area. I long to go back.

  10. What beautiful pictures. I've never been to light house but I think they're wonderful. Something kind of romantic about a light house. Unfortunately the West Coast doesn't have a lot of light houses. At least not around here. So it's nice to see pictures of them :-)

  15. I do like the refelction on the tanker. So the lighthouses of Boston could be anywhere in England.

I was in Boston in 1988 but did not get to the coast.

  16. I love lighthouses, there's such a peace and beauty about them, yet there's true sadness associated with every lighthouse in America.

Have a Wonderful Saturday Vee :)
