A Haven for Vee

Animal Farm

Higher prices — I so remember my grandparents whining (at least, it sounded like whining to my young ears).

"Why I could buy the very finest pair of shoes for $3.50," my grandmother might say or perhaps, "I remember when a loaf of bread cost 5¢!"  (Even I can remember when bread at the commissary cost 33¢ a loaf back in the day. I'd love to find a loaf for 33¢ today, but I digress.)

The whining would sound so ridiculous to me that I promised myself that I'd never do it. Well, let's just say that I have arrived at that magical age of grandparenthood where I find that whining about prices just comes with the territory.

Used to be, back in the day, that one went to the "Animal Farm" and paid not one cent. (When I was a child.) Then there came the day when a donation box was placed out and one could give or not for the privilege of walking around sniffing what was basically a giant litter box. (When my children were little.) Sorrowfully, there came the day when the fee was $2, which was cheap enough and a welcome class trip in May, litter box or no. (When I was a teacher.)

Imagine my horror to have to pay $7 for a ticket Monday. Seven dollars! John got in for $5 and so did Sam. Seventeen dollars to walk around in the heat for a couple of hours sniffing the giant litter box. Whine...whine...whine... Here are the photos. =D

Sam has been here a few times before. Somewhere I have his baby self peeking through that very bear. His favorite thing?

Tomorrow, I'm sharing some of the garden areas in the park. Hmmmm...maybe $7 wasn't such a bad price after all.

P.S. About yesterday's post. Since guests are no longer allowed to park within the park (now that's confusing), we decided to have our picnic lunch right in front of the car out in the parking lot. We never dreamed that we wouldn't be seated at a picnic table. It did have its advantages—no litter box smells for one and no hauling of stuff. With two children's car seats, a picnic basket, a cooler, and a bicycle, we didn't have room for our two wonderful chairs, though I'm putting them back in the trunk before I forget.

Can you believe that it's August so soon?!

  1. I remember similar stories of "whining" like you growing up. One such would be Having to walk 5 miles to school and back....blah, blah, blah! Those stories make for great memories though when you think about it. Looks as though you had a lovely day....litter box and all. But, I agree the prices are enough to keep one at home. Can't wait to see the garden photos.

  2. I could whine about the rise in food prices just in the last month. Just hang on to our seats! BUT, what a fun memory for you all, albeit at a price. sigh. Looks like a good time!

  3. Looks like it was worth the money spent. You'll just have to get older so things can be cheaper again. (wink!) Our Pastor refused the AARP discounts. Simply won't go there.

  4. I remember so many trips like that when our girls were small. We usually had a few extras since they always wanted to take friends. It seemed fun back then. I suspect somewhere down the road there'll be those trips with the grand. Or grands, whichever. I only whine now because I don't get to see her often enough.

  5. Oh I was whining over the price to visit the state parks now days..the place that use to be cheap so families could see nature is now like going to an amusement park, but in the end we still enjoyed it and I am not a grandparent YET, still hoping.

This looks fun and I know you enjoyed it through the eyes of your grandsons..what a blessing to be able to share with them and be in good health to do that.

    Yes August...105 here!

  6. What a great experience ~ for me, too! I've never been to a wild animal farm...except for the zoo. We must have these in the midwest, but I've not heard of one. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's post and seeing pictures of the flowers. I'm so glad that you chose your camera over the chairs!!

  7. My first job was at a movie theater. Adult ticket prices were only $2.50 to $3 then, but those of a certain age whined because they remembered when they could see a movie for a dime. Now I rarely go to movies because I can't stand the sound of my own whining. ;-)

    It's all relative, isn't it?

  8. Oh I hear your Grandma thoughts and I soo agree. I continue to be horrified at what things cost. However, your day sounds WONDERFUL...and worth every penny. Hope you have a good day today! HUGS

  9. LOL, I'm glad that I'm not the only one to grumble about admission prices. It looks like you had a lovely time, though, and Sam got to spend some quality time with you!

  10. That animal farm reminds me of the old Magnetic Hill Game Farm in Moncton when I was growing up. It was a variety of local animals behind fences or in fenced shelters that we'd walk by and stare at in amazement. Now it's called Moncton Zoo. A much bigger, fancier spot with local and exotic animals. I don't know what the cost is to view today but I bet it's more than $7.00! I know a little grandson that would love to visit the Zoo if he lived in this province! I'm glad you had the opportunity to take your grandson to the game farm. Making memories. Hugs, Pamela

  11. Well first - I want to visit this place. Second - LOL. You're funny. I remember my poor mother - she never got out of the depression. Prices in the 50's just horrified her and the last time I ever went to the grocery store with her was probably shortly before she died in 1990 and everything she looked at was just a shock at how expensive things were. It didn't mean a twit to me. But now I certainly wish that we had the prices of the 80's - not to mention the good ole 50's - back again. Today is proof positive that we all have a reason to whine. :)

  12. The price of making memories goes up constantly. Not that you can't make memories for free...but it looks like money well spent in this case. I'm sure that your grandboy was delighted with the day! :D

  13. P.S. I love the picture with the bear! So sweet!

  14. I can remember my grandparents taking about how costs were rising.

Then I did the exact same thing when my kids were in there 10-15 year old stages. I would say, "I remember when a candy bar was a dime and a pack of gum was a nickel.

  15. "Even I can remember when bread at the commissary cost 33¢ a loaf back in the day."

WooT! You shopped in a commissary? Never heard that before. :-)

To do so, your mate or you, have to be in the Service, of course. I did, when husband (in the Reserves, of course wayyyy back then) was called up for active Duty, early in our marriage.

    Gentle hugs,
    "Auntie"

  16. Oye! I would have reacted, too. What an odd amount for a ticket. Glad your grandson enjoyed it despite the litter box smell. As soon a you mentioned that I got a whiff...it's something so memorable LOL!

  17. Guess they have to pay the folks for all the wonderful carvings and statuary there. Looks like a really nice place. The baby fawn are so cute and also the peacock. I would love to see a peacock with its tail feathers spread out in all its glory just one time. xo

  18. Don't get me started on the price of things! I am still mad at the cost of mayo right now!!!! Love all the pictures though even if it was HIGH DOLLARS! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  19. The things we'll do for grandchildren! We paid $40 to take our two grandsons to a very small aquarium that has received rave reviews here. I give it 5 out of 10 and felt quite 'ripped off' at the cost.

  20. July flew by!

The whine...it's universal. I find myself whining about gas prices "I remember when my Dad got angry that gas was 40 cents a gallon on our yearly vacations." I remember my grandma too, "Bread was only 20 cents a loaf."

Our kids and grandkids will do it too!

That looks like such a nice animal park. I'm sure Sam enjoyed it!

  21. Ahhh yes, it comes with the territory. A right earned. I could fill my first car with gas for $7.00. I also make almost 20 times as much money now to pay for my $70.00 tank of gas.
But that whole bag of candy for a penny that grandpa could get. Those were the days!

  22. Well, I guess they need the money to maintain the park and animals.
And though we all complain about prices, people make a lot more money now a days.
Looks like a fun way to spend the day!

  23. hehehe ... giant litter box! i know what you mean! i also know what you mean about the whining grandparents and now I'M the whining ... well, i'm not a grandma yet ... but i COULD be (i'm OLD enough!)

it looks like a nice park though, and i like that they are helping animals that need help!

  24. Hmmmmm. So it's really August already? No, I don't think I believe it (or at least don't want to!).

I was just looking at a photo of Paul and me from the summer of 1972. A friend took it and we were standing in front of a convenience store (how romantic!). I noticed the milk was advertized as 89 cents a gallon......

  26. Hi Vee, Love the Animal Farm... Actually the prices are okay for things THESE days I think... I'm sure it was well worth the money you paid... I'd love it.

BUT---things are so darn expensive these days... Just drives me crazy... I can certainly do my share of whining also.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  27. The price of going anywhere is getting high. But I'll try not to whine. Much.

Looks like Sam had a wonderful time at Animal Farm. Looking forward to seeing the gardens.

  28. Well, Vee, I've not heard of a Wild Animal Farm. It looks much like what I call a zoo.
    Glad Sam had fun. :)

  29. Our zoo in town is still free but it is a fraction of what it once was.

I took the grandchildren there when they were visiting and it was pretty much a yawn to all but the two youngest.

It was all remodeled the past few years so it LOOKS nice but it reminds me more of a petting zoo now. No lions, tigers, etc.

  30. The Vancouver zoo at Stanley Park was free when I was a kid...and most interesting! It is long gone...to appease animal rights activists. I'd gladly pay $7 to visit it again. I'm just saying! It looks like you had a fine outing.

  31. Ve, you wouldn't want to know what the Bronx Zoo costs: $28.00 for an adult ($23.00 for a senior), $17.00 for a child and we also have to pay for parking! When I was in Sydney, Australia last yera if cost $47 dollars per adult to visit their zoo! Crazy!

It looks like your grandsons had a fun day ..so it was worth every cent!

PS: When bread cost 5 cents back in the day when my parents were married, my Dad was earning $8 a week...big difference!
